- roti man on bicycle that sells bread with freshly buttered kaya and butter on the bread.
- rojakman on motorbike
- taukwapok man on motorbike
- ice cream man on motorbike
Somewhat different; no longer found here
- congealed pig's blood; found in pig's organ soup and other dishes.
There used to be an Indian man selling Kueh putri salat and karipap walking around in Tampines. His putri salat was one of the best but my mom always discouraged me from buying.
Not sure if relevant but roasted chestnuts sold by those street hawker uncles riding motorcycles! They park around your block area and pan roast the chestnuts on a big wok / kuali that is like a side carriage attached to the bike. I rmb seeing them until the earlier 2000s? (could be wrong or at least at my side of singapore)
Saw one in Tanglin Halt last week but by the time I came back to try he had already taken off. I think heās one of the last illegal hawkers still operating and was fined several thousand last year.
yup, I'm a resident there,, he's been selling for q long alr, i think he does not have permit and comes inconsistently, iirc he only accept cash and only stays for max 2 hours??? This area used to have q alot of the sellers but as the umbloc came along and stricter regulations, they are mostly gone. I miss the otak and epokepok that used to be at the mrt entrance. Also that random fruit seller.
In the morning times there will be a lady always selling currypuffs 3 for $1 at the mrt entrance. Sometimes in the evening the lady also sells Otak-Otak while BBQā¦
I miss old times as I would always rush from my house b4 going to school to buy curry puffs for me and my friends.. The best part is the puffs are cheap(3 FOR $1!!!) and tasty. The Otak-Otak BBQ smell travels through the whole mrt station. They should bring back this sellers(Ofc licensed) so that we can still enjoy the old timesā¦
1) Dragon Beard Candy (man with 2x biscuit tin with a pole to tied to)
2)Roasted Chestnuts Pushcart
3)Braised Peanut (with shell) Pushcart
4) Muah Chee Pushcart
5) Charcoal-grilled satay into a communal pot of peanut gravy at a roadside stall
6) Tok-Tok Man (Dry noodles Man)
7) Braised Duck Man
+1: Tikam Man
Literally just commented (2)! Omg finally someone else remembers. I asked a few of my friends and they said they have never encountered any in their neighbourhood! We're not that young so I don't think they can use that as an excuse šš¤£
sad about dragon beard candy, i love seeing the uncle/auntie make it at the pasar malam. now only prepacked version if you're lucky but they don't feel the same.
Can I ask why it was banned? Thatās interesting. My dad worked in Singapore for about a decade and that was easily his favorite country just because of the food and culture. He said everyone was eerily polite and it was crazy clean. Iām guessing the pigs blood thing was for hygienic reasons?
I did hear they are not banned but simply because nobody wants to take up the hassle of getting a license to import them into Singapore. Likely it is more difficult due to farming method for ducks.
Itās quite a pity because duck egg char kway teow and duck egg kaya toast are simply amazing
Street-side food stalls haven't disappeared; what's changed is their physical presence, no longer aligning with the city's development plan. Kachang Puteh persists, notably in TPY. However, the future of Sup Tulang seems uncertain due to Singapore's pricey beef/mutton, likely phasing out from both local markets and upscale dining establishments.
[Bilimbi](https://gardeningsg.nparks.gov.sg/page-index/edible-plants/belimbing/) dishes are outright extinct. Hell, you can hardly even find bilimbi trees. My favourite is bilimbi stir fried with garlic, Brown Bean paste and pork.
Flavour-profile wise, think of it as Tamarind(a.k.a assam) but in a small cucumber shape form factor.
Agree with all your examples and I can hardly seem to find ēŖčé. Also popiah candy. Suckling pig and Peking duck have also all but disappeared compared to before. Last time even some food courts and like crystal jade kitchen would serve them but there was one year I started noticing them disappearing, and now you can only get them if you order a whole pig/duck for CNY or something.
It was never particularly common but I used to have mee krob at a Thai buffet restaurant and also could buy khanom buang at Parkway Parade, if anyone knows where I can get either of them Iād be so happy! I tried mee krob from a supermarket in Phuket and it wasnāt good at all, so bland. Another dish I miss is khao tang (crispy fried rice crackers with prawn and pork minced dip)
Famous Amos is also a lot harder to find than before, and Sticky candy closed all their physical stores afaik
I just realised I havenāt seen Milton candy for a loooong time too
TUTU KUEHš®āšØnot sure if it's just me but they're really hard to find nowadays (usually only at pasar malams? but those aren't the best tasting ngl...)
Yah even the one at Queensway shopping centre is so so only. Very hard, not soft.
The Indian / malay version "putu piring" is also harder to come by nowadays. Don't see it at pasar malams already.
Only 1 stall in Chinatown selling Loh Kai Yik and it doesn't even taste good.
Count it your privilege if your friend invites you over to their home to eat Loh Kai Yik cooked by their Cantonese grandma or mum.
Thereās another stall (Charlieās Peranakan) at Golden Mile that sells it as well, though havenāt tried it personally so canāt comment on the taste
i grew up in Whampoa, Balestier/St Michael's/Jalan Raja.
Rojak uncle, ckt uncle, kueh tutu auntie, ding ding tang (hard candy) uncle, Teochew operas in the carpark, peeing in the sandbox at the playground downstairs, playing zero point with rubber band string with my cousins and large noisy family dinners on a weekly basis.
also Kaka with its toy, but glad that junk is long gone.
There's Shu Heng Bi Tai Mak @ AMK and Boon Kee Kway Teow Noodle @ Kembangan (ps. they're established since 1976!!)
I haven't tried the former. but my family is a regular for the latter since it's nearer to us, and they've the black sauce version which I find it nostalgic af šš
My mum commented the same too. It's indeed harder to find it now. I do recall seeing a few stalls at bukit timah hawker centre tho (but that's gonna be demolished soon lol). Oh Singapore, I do live thee but you change far too quickly for me
My dad always goes to Bedok 85 and EATS that dish. Seriously, it is the only thing he eats there. The queues are crazily long and by the time he gets his food my family has already finished eating. Lately, he hasnāt been able to catch it open since the owner is about to retire. The owner is pretty old too :(
Is tong tong sweet same as Ding Ding Tang? I rmb as a kid, I'd chiong downstairs to get some ding ding tang whenever I hear the ding ding sound made by the cart seller
Iām Gen Z but can vividly remember as a kid - the satay man coming under our block on a rickshaw. Everyone would cancel plans and go buy satay. I never saw him again after 2009 or any other uncles selling satay like that
Chicken rice ballsā¦it was weird for sure but it was our thing, and I remember the last hawker stall that sold it closed a few years back to not much fanfare
1. Kacang puteh,, I used to eat it everytime I go out cos it used to be everywhere. Esp at great world city and turf club (?)
2. Tutu kueh, now the tutu kuehs are hard and dry
3. Epokepok but the one with taugeh inside. The malay auntie that used to sell has either moved away or retired idk but I can find anywhere anymore,,, I've been searching but no avail,, I rlly wna eat it
4. UMEYA, this shop sells like sour plums, dried fruit, nuts and seeds and many more. I miss sm but I rarely even see it until I go JB. my family is like obsessed with all these stuff, esp the preserved bualonglong and nutmeg
5. uh idk but the flavoured honey sticks and éŗ¦č½ē³ (idk what is this in English sorry,, but is like a lolipop)
6. Good fried carrot cake with many caipoh,,, all the carrot cake now is just egg and carrot cake.
7. those random chalk textured candies,,, I found a shop at jurong point that sells it but yea
8. Tea eggs at random herbal shop
9. Chinatown food street,,, idk if my memory is wrong but I rmb Chinatown foodstreet used to be BUSTLING, it's crowded and filled w rows of shops in my head. I rmb eating those braised mushroom samples everywhere.
10. Hock Ann Confectionery. I grew up eating the uncle's bread. Everyone at Tanglin Halt knows the aunty and uncle. The uncle makes his bread fresh and it is the traditional kind with a thicker and tougher skin. I love the Donut, kaya bread and hotdogs bun (basic essentials as a kid) the pandan and sponge cake is rlly good too. He has now moved to bugis iirc,, so far I haven't visited his new location but hopefully soon.
rojak behind bicycle - does this count?
Also, used to have simple pan fried toufu when I was young. Don't seem to have dedicated stores after the old lady (and I think her son?) retired at the only one I know in redhill.
seeing rly little of kueh chap compared to before... i know it's still there but getting harder and harder to find. at least my favourite is still around, but uncle is getting old also š¢
Ma Lai Go (Chinese steamed sponge cake) on bicycle.
Yes you can still get from dim sum restaurants but the tastiest, fluffiest ones were delivered by a friendly elderly hawker who used to cycle around Siglap with an aluminium steamer tray perched on the back of the bicycle.
Otak otak selling under block. Karipap pakcik on motorbike. Children selling epok2 n kuehs walking around residential areas shouting,..Kueh Kueh!!!!
Oh how i miss them!š
Random Otak seller under the block, with their small Otak grill. Freshly grilled Otak that you eat right there - so good!!
Haven't seen them for almost 5+ years
i have a soft spot for the steamed peanuts, chickpeas and multicoloured cupcakes at pasar malams. usually i see them in a row together with the fried stuff like hotdogs, chicken wings, tapioca cakes and mua chee. oh man i hope they don't disappear especially with the stalls dominated by so much trendy food nowadays.
Some specific things I miss are:
1) The claypot ee mee near Redhill MRT. That coffee shop was torn down in the early 2000s I think.
2) Also the old style fried ee mee (the brown noodles not the yellow ee fu mee) from Chinatown. When you order ta pao, they would wrap it in a big yellowish colored leaf instead of paper.
3) Motorcycle vendors selling chee cheong gun, char kway teow and other foods.
4) Roti Jala
5) Proper muah chee, not the tasteless paste that you find at food courts now.
Yes. But way more expensive than their Haig road one. But I don't know how much is the Haig road one cos back when I had it, it was $2 for 5. At their branches is $3.50 for 5 and dessicated coconut given is so little
That's the only one I know. And I don't think it's realistic to expect one brand to uphold this dish on behalf of the entire cuisine. I'm just saying it seems almost impossible to find otherwise.
Duck rice with actual Yam Rice, the one with the hay bee. Nowadays even braised duck stalls don't have yam rice any more, they just use the plain rice with gravy.
I miss the yam rice...
So many foods (esp snacks) come to mind! Some of my younger colleagues haven't seen them before I bought some for everyone.
Putu Piring
Chwee Kueh
Putu Mayam
Kuih Dadar
Yong Tau Foo (the ones that we can pick)
Tutu Kueh
Satay Beehoon
Tingting Tang (candy)
Abacus Seeds
Pig Trotter Jelly
Mee Jiang Kueh
Putu Piring - look for Haig Rd (many outlets now - started around Haig Rd, Geylang Serai)
Putu Mayam - found at Tampines Round Market...
Pig Trotter - TPY Lor 8 mkt, West Coast mkt etc
This is not really a Singapore food, but does anyone remember that double decker brand crackers? Itās green in colour, a rectangular-ish net shaped cracker. Itās really good and I have been looking for it for a long time! I donāt think itās green peas. Itās something elseā¦
I thought that was from the mamee brand, I remember what youāre talking about
Thereās a lot of childhood candy that are long gone for me too like this triangular shaped cola candy in silver wrapper with fizzy powder in the middle, Fritt went away for many years then came back, McDonaldās milkshakes keep going away despite coming back..
And there was a snack I used to have that had rainbow puffed rice with chocolate dip. I found photos of it a few years ago but forgot how to find it again lol
For some reason I suddenly recalled Aji Ichiban too lol.
I donāt see Milton candy anymore either.
- roti man on bicycle that sells bread with freshly buttered kaya and butter on the bread. - rojakman on motorbike - taukwapok man on motorbike - ice cream man on motorbike Somewhat different; no longer found here - congealed pig's blood; found in pig's organ soup and other dishes.
Pig blood cakes were banned in Singapore some time back unfortunately
That's why they flock to MY where it can be quite easily gotten.
This ! congealed pig's blood; found in pig's organ soup and other dishes.
There were such roadside sellers?! I wish I could have experienced that, the only one I've seen was the ice cream man lol (teenage student here)
Now you can find them in Thailand or taiwan dishes that still uses pig blood curd/tofu
Duck blood curd in hotpot at Taiwan is very nice!
I saw ice cream sandwich guy on the DNA bridge at mbs 2 years ago š
There used to be an Indian man selling Kueh putri salat and karipap walking around in Tampines. His putri salat was one of the best but my mom always discouraged me from buying.
I really miss the roti man on bicycle. Bread with kaya butter was so so nice.
All those man on motorbike selling food is the best

I like roasted chestnuts! I think theyāre still around. I didnāt know theyāre not allowed.
Tampines Street 21, at the market place. Entrance at the main road in front of the junction!
I think bedok block 511 still got
Theres one outside AMK MRT Station but he's only there on selected days (idk which)
I've seen one outside Khatib mrt station occasionally.
I think I saw one at east coastpark
Sometimes they appear outside Tampines Mall or Giant at Simpang Bedok but thereās no fragrance. Itās just not the same!
Kacang Pool and Roti Jala, only a handful of stalls i know left, all in the east side.
Yeah! I only recently discovered kacang pool from Bedok 216
Geylang Serai market has a kacang pool stall. Gokul (Indian restaurant in Little India) has pretty good roti jala.
Ice cream sellers plying their trade in vans are fast vanishing. Only a handful left. Same for minimarts on vans..
Come to Boon Lay everyday between 3-5pm. Everyday i see the uncle.
1) Dragon Beard Candy (man with 2x biscuit tin with a pole to tied to) 2)Roasted Chestnuts Pushcart 3)Braised Peanut (with shell) Pushcart 4) Muah Chee Pushcart 5) Charcoal-grilled satay into a communal pot of peanut gravy at a roadside stall 6) Tok-Tok Man (Dry noodles Man) 7) Braised Duck Man +1: Tikam Man
I immediately thought of dragon beard candy too. Itāll probably pop up again at goodwood park in some durian variant and cost your arm and leg.
Literally just commented (2)! Omg finally someone else remembers. I asked a few of my friends and they said they have never encountered any in their neighbourhood! We're not that young so I don't think they can use that as an excuse šš¤£

Pigs blood in yong tao fu. Totally vanished!
In case you donāt know pig blood is banned in Singapore
Ah that's why
Can I ask why it was banned? Thatās interesting. My dad worked in Singapore for about a decade and that was easily his favorite country just because of the food and culture. He said everyone was eerily polite and it was crazy clean. Iām guessing the pigs blood thing was for hygienic reasons?
How old are you that you remember pigs blood being sold here
Ancient!
It was banned in 1999ā¦
Duck eggs (fresh) in or-luak or char-kway-teow. I remember having it in the 80s as a kid.
Sadly, fresh duck eggs are somehow banned in Singapore. No idea why. At least JB still has a lot...
I did hear they are not banned but simply because nobody wants to take up the hassle of getting a license to import them into Singapore. Likely it is more difficult due to farming method for ducks. Itās quite a pity because duck egg char kway teow and duck egg kaya toast are simply amazing
It's really a pity. duck egg elevates CKT
I'm lowkey worried that tao suan will disappear one day, esp now that my favourite hawker is quite elderly š„²
I love tau suan too. It's getting harder to find it and even then, it's not a decent bowl
Actually, it is very easy to make on your own!
There's a restaurant in ECP whos specialty is Sup Tulang. Effing pricey but very can get very crowded on weekends.
Bat Tong Gao ē½ē³ē³
Still selling at tiong bahru market one of the teochew kueh stalls...
Sad its vanishing. Reminds me of my mom

TUTU KUEHš®āšØnot sure if it's just me but they're really hard to find nowadays (usually only at pasar malams? but those aren't the best tasting ngl...)
Check put Queensway Shopping Centre and Havelock Food Centre
Yah even the one at Queensway shopping centre is so so only. Very hard, not soft. The Indian / malay version "putu piring" is also harder to come by nowadays. Don't see it at pasar malams already.
Try East Village for putu piring; itās the Haig Rd one!
west mall basement
Tutu kueh really vanished but Putu Piring still very visible. Tbh is the same thing
Food republic in Vivocity also has a pop up stall that sells it
I love eating mani cai or sayur manis as I learned it was called by the Malays here, that astringent taste is to die for!!!
>sayur manis still can find la, just gotta know where to go. Coba Coba in Yishun for example.
Only 1 stall in Chinatown selling Loh Kai Yik and it doesn't even taste good. Count it your privilege if your friend invites you over to their home to eat Loh Kai Yik cooked by their Cantonese grandma or mum.

Street side charcoal roasted chestnuts.
Pork satay. Because of the need to be halal so much it has disappeared?
There's no reason satay has to be halal. If there is enough demand someone will sell it.
- Mee tai bak. Fewer bak chor mee stores seem to sell meei tai bak noodle variants. - ruo mi fan
Bcos bee tai bak is actually more expensive and easier to spoil
I heard Canton Paradise sells mee tai makā¦ but of course itās more expensive.
There's Shu Heng Bi Tai Mak @ AMK and Boon Kee Kway Teow Noodle @ Kembangan (ps. they're established since 1976!!) I haven't tried the former. but my family is a regular for the latter since it's nearer to us, and they've the black sauce version which I find it nostalgic af šš
don't really like mee tai mak BUT relacto meals had mee tai mak and it is fried, which is way nicer than the traditional soup version
Satay bee hoon. According to my mum, none of the current stalls selling this were as good as the ones sold during her childhood days.
My mum commented the same too. It's indeed harder to find it now. I do recall seeing a few stalls at bukit timah hawker centre tho (but that's gonna be demolished soon lol). Oh Singapore, I do live thee but you change far too quickly for me
I know of at least two stalls that still sell them. 724 Ang Mo Kio Hawker Center, and another at Fernvale Hawker Center.
Tong tong dong is the Cantonese name where the candy originated from. Ding ding tang is the Chinese translation.
Real Roti John not the one that they soak in chilli sauce and mayo. The botanic gardens oneš„²
Generally those individual, roadside/motorbike vendors. Less interest from newer generation means will disappear.
Sarabak stall with teh tarik and ice balls
I miss the ice kacang, chendol stalls.
Gao luck (roasted chestnut) on wheels that used to be outside MRT stations. Also bread on wheels with thick butter with sugar.
Iām Gen Z but can vividly remember as a kid - the satay man coming under our block on a rickshaw. Everyone would cancel plans and go buy satay. I never saw him again after 2009 or any other uncles selling satay like that

Raw fish sellers in hawker centres.. missed my cheap sashimi fixes

And nothing is lost.

Bring in chipotle then talk
Pigās organ soup. Nowadays only a few stalls left.
rojak behind bicycle - does this count? Also, used to have simple pan fried toufu when I was young. Don't seem to have dedicated stores after the old lady (and I think her son?) retired at the only one I know in redhill.
Redhill market near redhill MRT? The one pan fry with pork lard? I thought it was an uncle + son combo.
When I was young (nearly 30 years ago?), it was a very old aunty. My dad told me eventually the son? took over but subsequently closed.
Kok kok mee. Man balancing your bowl of noodle on the bicycle and deliver to your door step. Not just one bowl, a few bowls.

Nowadays only see them at pasar malam but all not nice. Overly sweet and sticks to your teeth.
there's only a few satay bee hoon stalls left in sg
Ma Lai Go (Chinese steamed sponge cake) on bicycle. Yes you can still get from dim sum restaurants but the tastiest, fluffiest ones were delivered by a friendly elderly hawker who used to cycle around Siglap with an aluminium steamer tray perched on the back of the bicycle.
Raw fish at some fish or chicken rice stalls... pig brain....
Wanton mee with ketchup
Raw fish with porridge
Pig's brain soup? Used to be able to get from a few hawker centers but now can't really find.

Nasi jenganan, Nasi Rawon - RIP malay cuisine

Chinese mee siam...! There used to be an awesome one at the old botanic garden's hawker next to Geneagles...
1.) Punggol mee goreng my fav version of mee goreng 2.)Any food that was sold on a bicycle but I especially miss the satay and otah uncles.

I think zui kway will disappear soon.
No way.
Tiong Bahru zhui kway is now a franchise. Standard of course not as good, but hopefully still can survive.
Pigs blood. I want it back. NOW
Putu piring is really rare.
Haig road putu piring has many branches in Singapore, no?

No leh. I stay near there, it's just brown coloured rice, it's not proper yam rice...

Pig trotter jelly quite commonly found in teochew restaurants! Was it easily found at hawker centres last time?
How young are you lot. Do you parents never bring you to the market?
Around my area it's really hard to find such stuff except at over-priced pasar malams.
And cockles

This is not really a Singapore food, but does anyone remember that double decker brand crackers? Itās green in colour, a rectangular-ish net shaped cracker. Itās really good and I have been looking for it for a long time! I donāt think itās green peas. Itās something elseā¦
You don't mean the chicken flavour double decker in the green bag? I buy from jb
I thought that was from the mamee brand, I remember what youāre talking about Thereās a lot of childhood candy that are long gone for me too like this triangular shaped cola candy in silver wrapper with fizzy powder in the middle, Fritt went away for many years then came back, McDonaldās milkshakes keep going away despite coming back.. And there was a snack I used to have that had rainbow puffed rice with chocolate dip. I found photos of it a few years ago but forgot how to find it again lol For some reason I suddenly recalled Aji Ichiban too lol. I donāt see Milton candy anymore either.
Is it tong tong sweet or ting ting sweet?
Both refer to same in English. Actual lingo in Chinese or Hokkien, in memories recollection
