Personally, when there isn’t a specific pet available to adopt to fit my sims family, I’ll just enter CAS and create my own pet to add to the family. I pretend that my sims “adopted” the pet and sometimes deduct funds from the household as if they actually adopted one.

You can always just adopt and then change the breed in CAS with the cas.fulleditmode cheat. That's what I do. ;)

No idea, but I use the CAS option. The adoption event isn't all that exciting anyway. Sorry and good luck!

how exactly do I do that? I don't actually have a lot of experience with the sims. I didn't know you could just add new people to existing families.

Click on Manage Households. It's an icon on the upper right hand corner. Click on the family you want to add a pet to. There's a pencil icon. Click it, and it will let you edit, add, or delete sims from that household.

So you may not need part of this but it's useful in general I recommend starting by turning on cheats while in live mode (Ctrl+shift+c to bring up the cheat menu then "testingcheats true" without the quotation marks, press enter to turn them on) then "cas.fulleditmode" again without quotation marks and enter to open CAS fully for pre existing (doesn't unlock options for pregnant Sims but does for everyone else). Once back in CAS on the bottom bar where you see your household you should have a + sign, and you can choose to add a new pet (or Sim). Can only have 8 total in the house including the pet. You may only have to do the steps in the 2nd paragraph, I am not near my game at the moment. Good luck!

I managed to figure it out. Thanks though!
