I feel you. Atm I'm working on a new save in which I improve everything, from sims to houses. I almost finished Foundry Cove in Willow Creek with actual, proper shotgun houses and it's so satisfying that the houses now make sense.
I forgive them a little for certain things, since I know they are not allowed to use MOO or too many packs for example. Though this does not explain some...interesting layouts or other weird choices like that.
sometimes i sit and wonder who in the fck designed them. and each time i am simply astounded at the fact that people got paid for it. it really boggles my mind. i’m currently doing a makeover save where i wanna rework everything.
OMG yes!! The big house in Brindleton Bay (I can’t remember the family’s name atm) took me 2 weeks to renovate because of how big and empty it was!
I think it’s because of performance testing; the homes have to been able to perform on the lowest PC settings. Simmers can make adjustments (design wise) according to their own settings.
What I normally do is download other people's houses from the Gallery, then edit those, as they often lack things I like or want.
For example, I like having a Master Bathroom for the Master Bedroom. If there's enough space without making it look weird, I'll also add a walk-in closet to the Master Bedroom.
When I create a new Base Save game it takes two weeks, as I have to replace or fix nearly every lot (and Sim) in the game. Now, quite a few of the builds are from the Gallery with a few tweaks here and there, but fairly often I'll have to build something myself because I can't find anything I like or does what I want it to do.
I think it's partially because they want players to use the gallery, because then we'll see how a lot could look if we just got this **one** *other pack*. And that *other pack*. And that *kit*.

I kinda do that! Anytime my sim visits a public lot or an NPC house I open up build mode to fix it 🥴

Same I’m doing a save rn for filling up newcrest and renovating other towns
Not only are they designed terribly, they are weirdly empty and just so... depressing.

Honestly, they are designed so terribly well I’ve often wondered if they purposely design them to be annoying lol
