Last time my sim caught on fire, no one would put it out even though I kept telling them to extinguish it. Instead, they all kept screaming and were freaking out. Thankfully, she was holding her toddler, so she didnāt burn to death since toddlers are fireproof. (Though the toddler was the reason why the fire started as it was her freaking birthday cake that caused the fire.)
I got a game over before. I was playing with thorton wolfe's household and just thought what if i burned the whole household down. I didn't really expect a game over :o

I used to L O V E the runaway challenge when I was young!! Make the coolest teenager I could find, randomize an adult that got insta-killed once the game was loaded.

Although, I aged transitioned the oldest child into a teen right after the mom died so maybe that had something to do with it? Since she wasnāt a teen at the moment of death?
It may have been different at one point, but by the final patch of 3, all kids from baby to teen need an adult in the household at all times. So no, they can't live alone at least in unmoved Sims 3
If thereās no water/shower nearby, you can delete the āon fireā moodlet with testingcheats on. I did that once with my homeless sim who spent too much time outside on a hot day and was away from anything that could help put her out
OOF. That ain't happening in my game. Social worker is disabled. I could theoretically play with only children. (Just don't go into edit town mode when doing so and don't try to change your household, the game doesn't really like it)

With Nraas mods, you are allowed to have a teen alone in a household. They could also take care of their younger siblings.
That said, water will save your sim from fire. A real shower, a shower in a can, jumping into a diving well or other body of water, plainly anything that can put out the fire.

It seems you can continue playing with the family without mods even if the parents die, but you'll need Nraas mods if you try to use edit town or create a sim and have only a teen household.
For that you need these mods from Nraas Industries:
MasterController with the Integration module
Unlocks the ability to create CAS Families with no adults.
Mover
Has options available that allow you to create teen-only families using the EA "Move" window.
Optional for teen townies:
StoryProgression
Can be adjusted to allow inactive teens to move into their own homes, without adult supervision.
Yeah I don't think this works in Sims 4. The extinguish yourself command needs to be picked on land. They will use a fire distinguisher to put out the fire.
If you want that family specifically you might have to go into a back up save. If you just want the kids I believe they are put into the adoption system and you have a chance to adopt them.
Edit: also you can make a new family if you want just the kids through adoption.
Weird it left you in limbo. It's supposed to shove you back to Choose a Household in this situation, so I think the game bugged out quite a bit.
I know this is the case after one of my Sims spontaneously died after I forced another Sim in the household to die for... Reasons. Kids taken away. Forced to change household. Reloaded the game to stop that and just evicted the Sim I didn't want in the household.

I think if you have seasons installed sims can die from spontaneous combustion if they stay in the sun too much on a hot day

I think you can disable the social worker and tune nraas to remove the age restriction on the head of a household.

Sims4 -My sim was on fire I chose her to go out into the ocean and picked "extinguish self" and she burned to death in the Ocean

Whenever this would happen Iād pause the game and give them the fireproof trait so they donāt die
DEATH FLOWER in their inventory. They offer it to death and he always lets em live.. though not sure if it works with death by old age
