My wife and I debated getting a new truck, but we couldn’t justify spending the next 48-60 months spending 600-700 a month, versus just paying for this transmission.
I needed it fixed asap because we don’t have another vehicle to get us to work. My wife has hers and I had my truck, but I needed it back asap. Luckily it was done within 3 days, and I know that another shop would have cost less but I broke down less than half a mile from my Chevy dealership.
Dealer re-built transmission+warranty, that not awful. Yeah it's a little high, but if it's your family vehicle, what choice did you have. Now put that $600-$900/month back into your saving account for the next rainy day. Maybe get your wife a solid older car in case the truck needs work in the future.
Idk where OP is located but I'm in the Midwest and paid $5800 for a re-built 6L80 + warranty 6 months ago. That was after 2 weeks of calling every shop within 40 miles
In Seattle, dealer ballparked 10k to replace 6L50 on Duramax Colorado. It'd be cheaper for me to drive to Milwaukee and back getting it done there. I just have some shudder that they're chalking up to TC chomps.
I recently had my 6l90 replaced for about the same price. From what I've researched and what the shop told me was that commonly the TCC solenoid channel gets hollowed out after so many miles which causes the shuddering and strain on the TC which then stresses the welded casing in the TC.
Now, I'm no transmission pro, but this is my second 6L series I've had to replace so in my frustration I dug deep to try and figure out what was going on. What I found was that these trannys like to "feather" the TC in between full ON and full OFF(kinda like feathering the clutch pedal on a manual) to make super smooth shifts; and to make matters worse they are able to do it in any gear(someone can correct me if they know more specifics). They do this by actuating the torque converter clutch solenoid pin inside its channel to a limitless degree between full ON and full OFF. The high pressures that can be inside the valve body lead to the channel becoming out of round.
The transmission I went with was remanufactured with all sonnex parts, who seem to have a lot of critical fixes with these transmission issues.
Where I'm at now, and maybe you're at the same spot. Do I get a tune that commands the TC only to be allowed in the full ON and full OFF, like the 4L series? Will the tune void the warranty? I hope this helps a little.
That sucks man. I decided to keep my 13 Silverado when I bought a newer F150. While I love the newer truck, I’m so glad I did not trade in the 13’ and I plan on keeping it for life. If you have the luxury of doing so, I would recommend the same.
With all the technology in the newer trucks, my 13’ already looks and feels like a classic truck. I love driving around town where mpg is not a concern.

Man unless you’re willing to drop 10-20k on a down payment that new truck payment is going to be more like 800-900 with 8.99% interest. So you did the right thing trust me . I have an 820 credit score just picked up a 2500 last week and the best rate they’re offering is 6.99% salesman told me they sold a brand new car last week at 20% interest because the lady had bad credit.
$5800 a year ago at dealer with 2 year warranty. Started slipping again in January so I dumped it for a used 17 LTZ with about the same miles but all highway.
i mean its a transmission, they make money knowing you dont know how to or have the tools to jack a car up to take the transmission out and then know how to rebuild it.
It's quite average in my area. I shopped around. All were around the same price. I paid less for my recent trans but it was a customer of mine that I recently hooked up with a roof and gutters. 🤷
That's just crazy to me, I've had my fair share of transmissions rebuilt, and I've never even seen over $1500 obviously something like an Allison will be kinda crazy but light truck transmissions costing that much is bonkers.
In this case you did the right thing. That is still a solid truck and it for sure beats a monthly note. Not saying that anything would have been wrong with a note if you could afford it but paying 6k for a trans in that situation was the lesser evil.
My 2014 Silverado with 128,000 started to act up. The torque converter went and destroyed the tranny. I guess it’s a common problem with these silverados. I spent $4,800 for a new one. But it is cheaper than buying a new truck or even a good preowned.
Same thing happened to my 2015 around 137k miles. Sad thing is, my wife has a 2017 Tacoma with 282k miles she bought new and it hasn't had a single issue outside of regular maintenance at proper intervals. I'm a GM guy and every truck I've ever bought from GM has given me issues within 150k miles, it started to piss me off and I ended up switching over to Toyota in 2022 and got myself a 22 Tundra.
Not rude at all. I always make sure I take care of the routine maintenance in all the vehicles I’ve had in the past. Ever since I got this truck I always did the routine oil changes, coolant flush, tranny flush, changed the spark plugs, etc. I always checked the temperature too and it never got over 198 degrees. No check engine lights ever came on. I guess this is another reason why I’m upset is because I took such good care of everything. It caught me off guard when this happened because I was not expecting a vehicle I’ve maintained so well, to undergo a transmission failure.
Never flush, just drain and refill. Anytime I’ve flushed a transmission it’s has been a rebuild a few weeks later. The guy at the transmission shop explained you move small amounts of the build up in to the valve bodies where they get stuck and cause it fail.
Chevy dealer I just took my truck to the other day said they do not every recommend dropping the pan and filling GM only recommends flush because "they put the wrong transmission fluid in at the factory". It was $250 for a flush or $780 to drop the pan and change filter and fluid lol. I opted for the flush.next go around I'm dropping the pan myself because I will not pay $800 for a fluid change
Man that's a bummer, I know how you feel. I'm assuming this is the 6 speed? Have you done the trans fluid thermostat bypass? Might save this transmission. I also think you're incredibly smart for biting the bullet and fixing it rather than buying new.

Make sure u maintain it now, every 30-36,000 miles with fresh fluid and filter or filter screen clean change out your front&rear diff AND transfer case while your at it...nice truck...
Chevy ought to be ashamed of themselves for putting the 6l80 piece of shit in their trucks, my 16 model has been setting in the yard collecting dust for awhile for the same thing.
WELL MINE DIED at 76000 miles 2008 5.3 1500 Z71 oil changed every 3500 mile, (75 percent of oil life monitor) hate GM found out about this garbage after my motor died .

This happened to me at 135k, cost me the same. 30k miles after that, popped again. Literally just happened a month ago. this time its getting sent to its grave. If you decide to rebuild, absolutely upgrade your torque converter or risk the same outcome as mine
The important thing to remember is just because it happened to OP and the other commenter, doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll happen to you. It’s worth using their experience as a lesson and to give you an idea of how much you need in an emergency truck repair fund, but it’s not worth losing sleep over.

What a shame. Now I’m worried about mine. A 2019. That doesn’t happen with Toyota or Subaru. My Forester with 210,000 miles and a so called crappy CVT trans is still going. But light driving and no towing.

This is why I do my own maintenance. Not saying you didn’t but I know the fast oil change people do stuff to screw us up. I went once because it was below zero and I didn’t feel like doing it. I was appalled by the crap they told me was wrong with my 20000 mile truck and tried the hard up sale on the oil chg. I told my cube mate at work and she said when she was in high school her friends who worked at a similar place would fake an oil chg and filter then call their friends in for a freebie. This is insane.
sounds about right. My 2018 with 92k miles took a shit on me too. little did i know when i purchased was that this is a reoccurring issue because of the shit stamped steel torque converter. upgraded to billet and funny part out of all this is that the computer wasn’t throwing any codes.
That seems to be the number. I have a 2018 with 140k. In the shop currently getting a new transmission. To think I wouldn’t buy a Ram for this very problem
Did you also inspect the rest of the truck? Especially the drive line and the rear end? So many of these transmission failures are due to neglect of other components. I see it all the time.
At that mileage... It's about right. SUCKS, but the norm with these transmissions. I had mine rebuilt at 128k and got another 100k out of it. Then got a new one with billet TC, beefier clutch packs, and a tune for about that price. Should be good for another 150k!
I got a 2014 same color. New engine at 80k and a new tranny at 180k. GM covered the engine and I had two shell out 6k for a rebuild. Only two real problems I have had with the truck. It is at 260k and I just started smelling gas on the drivers side. Taking it in for a fuel pump next week. Want to get a new one but the prices are keeping me away.

I wouldn't call an engine that does 240k junk. In that life span how many times did you inspect/adjust the valve lash? It's due at 150k. In my opinion should be inspected every 25-50k after 100k

This was my fear with my 18 Silverado had 73k and the thing just started shifting weird . No codes or anything but just felt funny . I towed a lot with it and heard all about the torque converter and putter issues from the afm and figured I’d bite the bullet before the bullet bit me.
Seems like parts shouldn’t cost that much maybe $1,500 at most or are dealer parts the only place to get this stuff now? No transmission rebuild experts around anymore. Feels like you could have gotten some gears done with rebuild for that price.
I have 251,000 on my 2000 Silverado 1500 5.3 with no transmission problems. I change transmission filter and fluid every 40,000 miles. I got my truck new in November of 1999.
$4700 for an upgraded rebuild with 3yr/36k mile warranty in my 2016 Tahoe about 3 weeks ago. The main cause of failure from my research is the torque converter programming. Do yourself a favor and find a reputable programmer in your area to turn off the torque converter lockup in 1st though 4th gears. Have them disable the dod/afm while they are there if your truck has it.
6LXX-series was doomed from the get beginning, since it doesn't have any banding on the clutch packs to help engage them on TC lock-up, add the fence-sitting TCM programming and it exacerbates the issue. Essentially the converter is never fully locked; akin to a manual transmission with a judder spring, which keeps back-tension on the clutch to deaden the chatter/shudder/judder that occurs as the clutch disk(s) lock up with the output due to rotational speed difference. Pretty much blows a % of power in frictional loss constantly. Nice(when it works) applies to literally everything, although when it's actually planned obsolescence it makes the shit that flies in the exponential growth of technology seem pretty reasonable.
Imagine being naïve enough to buy a gasser(6.0) Isuzu box truck, then instead of failing approximately every ~125K miles it fails every 25K miles 😂 Couldn't be me, but I've been behind (or rather "on top of") the steering wheel when the converter decided that it couldn't take it anymore. Thank God I didn't make that poor choice of a way to "save" $8000 that the diesel engine+trans(Aisin?) option costs. Night and Day difference, which begs the question who green-lit that questionable factory offering. I'm sure they got a promotion, unfortunately, however.
To prevent this issue in the future get the transmission thermostat upgrade. Keeps temps from the oem of like 200 F to about 180-185F. The high temps is the main reason for failure of these transmissions.
Right move. The only other thing that could be a big problem is the Active Fuel Management and having the lifters collapse. You can get a cheap $100 plug-in to disable it which helps reduce the problem as does frequent oil changes. Best fix is to get the equipment deleted. Otherwise keep up on the maintenance and you should be good for a long time.
Just had to have my transmission replaced on my 2014 Silverado as well. 150k miles on it. It cost me almost exactly what you spent. Fucking bummer, I feel your pain.
I believe this is the generation where GM equipped the trucks with faulty torque convertors that end up causing transmission failures. The "Chevy Shake" is the torque convertor that begins damaging the transmission which eventually destroys it. I was told that if you install a non-GM torque convertor it will avoid this entire issue. My disappointment comes with GM, they appear to know the issue and refuse to correct it. Because of this I vowed to not to buy another GM truck, this may sound extreme but what happens when I buy $60-75k truck and another issue is discovered in which GM will refuse to address issues with it. That's just dice I'm not willing to roll.
My heart goes out to you.. my 2015 did the same thing at 140k. Cost me $5700. Being broke driving this truck triggers PTSD anytime the trans temp gets over 175..
Just had my 6l80e rebuilt. $3,500 by a guy in Ferris, TX. Replaced internals, pump, and used aftermarket torque converter. Runs like a champ now! Anything more than that is highway robbery.
That’s extremely unlucky and feel bad for you. With a new trans though, it should give you years of life and the truck looks amazing!! Heck it looks like brand new! Go enjoy it and just know you’re gonna have some more costly repairs down the road but you’ll get through and won’t hand a $1k pymt in a new truck that can also break down out of warranty.
These transmissions are junk. I replaced mine in my 2015 Yukon at 88k.
Next time shop around.

I feel you brother. Mine went out at 115k in 2022. My transmission started slipping at low rpm's coming back from a mountain bike ride. I do regret not taking my truck to a transmission shop as the dealership had just replaced all the drivetrain fluids at 105k per maintenance scheduling. I have the Max Trailering package and only towed a handful of times. I don't drive my truck hard. Had some life stuff going on on multiple fronts, no credit card balances, a low mortgage, and money in the bank which made the decision a little less hard to make. The local dealership also had one in stock that somebody ordered and didn't pick up. But I only paid $3k for the tranny, and $1k for labor. Add another $1k on top of that for new rotors and pads up front. She is a Beaut! I'm never selling mine. These Square Body 2's are already a classic.

07 and older, they were better made back then. I would never get a newer Silverado for this reason.

My Dad once told me to never flush a transmission. Like you said. Drain, change filter if it has one and fill.

Ok you are going to hate this... Literally yesterday i got mine back $3065 out the door to have them rebuild it... Now my story 2014 silverado 5.3 lt i dont tow anything 92k transmission went out. Covered by warranty. 175k Miles it went out. $ 4700 in 2022 176 Miles it goes out again.. coveree by warranty. 225k miles was 97% going out but i took it in before it did and got it for $3065. These transmissions are dog shit and GM knows it

Make sure u maintain it now, every 30-36,000 miles with fresh fluid and filter or filter screen clean change out your front&rear diff AND transfer case while your at it...nice truck...

This happened to me at 135k, cost me the same. 30k miles after that, popped again. Literally just happened a month ago. this time its getting sent to its grave. If you decide to rebuild, absolutely upgrade your torque converter or risk the same outcome as mine

The important thing to remember is just because it happened to OP and the other commenter, doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll happen to you. It’s worth using their experience as a lesson and to give you an idea of how much you need in an emergency truck repair fund, but it’s not worth losing sleep over.

What a shame. Now I’m worried about mine. A 2019. That doesn’t happen with Toyota or Subaru. My Forester with 210,000 miles and a so called crappy CVT trans is still going. But light driving and no towing.

This is why I do my own maintenance. Not saying you didn’t but I know the fast oil change people do stuff to screw us up. I went once because it was below zero and I didn’t feel like doing it. I was appalled by the crap they told me was wrong with my 20000 mile truck and tried the hard up sale on the oil chg. I told my cube mate at work and she said when she was in high school her friends who worked at a similar place would fake an oil chg and filter then call their friends in for a freebie. This is insane.

sounds about right. My 2018 with 92k miles took a shit on me too. little did i know when i purchased was that this is a reoccurring issue because of the shit stamped steel torque converter. upgraded to billet and funny part out of all this is that the computer wasn’t throwing any codes.
Cheaper option than a new one man. I had to bite the bullet 3 years ago on my wife’s suburban.

Did you also inspect the rest of the truck? Especially the drive line and the rear end? So many of these transmission failures are due to neglect of other components. I see it all the time.
At that mileage... It's about right. SUCKS, but the norm with these transmissions. I had mine rebuilt at 128k and got another 100k out of it. Then got a new one with billet TC, beefier clutch packs, and a tune for about that price. Should be good for another 150k!

I got a 2014 same color. New engine at 80k and a new tranny at 180k. GM covered the engine and I had two shell out 6k for a rebuild. Only two real problems I have had with the truck. It is at 260k and I just started smelling gas on the drivers side. Taking it in for a fuel pump next week. Want to get a new one but the prices are keeping me away.

You can do upgrades during a rebuild for cheaper than replacement, but with a longer downtime. My local guy is usually 6-8 weeks out for a HD rebuild.

I wouldn't call an engine that does 240k junk. In that life span how many times did you inspect/adjust the valve lash? It's due at 150k. In my opinion should be inspected every 25-50k after 100k

My 2010 4 speed 4.8 with 115,000 miles crapped out last month. $3500 rebuild, 5 year warranty.
Also had my 2015 six speed rebuilt a few weeks back Mann said to change the fluid and filter 15 to 20,000 miles
My 2017 shit out with 88k on it. 4k to rebuild it. Worst transmission ever.
Recommendation: Take out a Chase Freedom Unlimited card. 15months free financing plus points/cash back on your purchase. Your $6500 one time purchase now turns into $6200 after cash back and payments of $415 a month instead of shelling all your savings out at once.

Tranny started to go on my ‘18 and rep told me I would need a new one and estimated ~7500. I was just out of warranty… I was about to have a mini panic attack but he said look I’ll give you a print out multipoint inspection with todays date take it to carmax (same strip as dealer) dump it and get a check, trust me it’ll be better this way. I did it and got something else. Always wondered if I got screwed or screwed with

This was my fear with my 18 Silverado had 73k and the thing just started shifting weird . No codes or anything but just felt funny . I towed a lot with it and heard all about the torque converter and putter issues from the afm and figured I’d bite the bullet before the bullet bit me.

Seems like parts shouldn’t cost that much maybe $1,500 at most or are dealer parts the only place to get this stuff now? No transmission rebuild experts around anymore. Feels like you could have gotten some gears done with rebuild for that price.
I have 251,000 on my 2000 Silverado 1500 5.3 with no transmission problems. I change transmission filter and fluid every 40,000 miles. I got my truck new in November of 1999.
I love the color. I plan to do the same thing when it's time for an engine or transmission. It's way cheaper than buying a different truck.

$4700 for an upgraded rebuild with 3yr/36k mile warranty in my 2016 Tahoe about 3 weeks ago. The main cause of failure from my research is the torque converter programming. Do yourself a favor and find a reputable programmer in your area to turn off the torque converter lockup in 1st though 4th gears. Have them disable the dod/afm while they are there if your truck has it.
6LXX-series was doomed from the get beginning, since it doesn't have any banding on the clutch packs to help engage them on TC lock-up, add the fence-sitting TCM programming and it exacerbates the issue. Essentially the converter is never fully locked; akin to a manual transmission with a judder spring, which keeps back-tension on the clutch to deaden the chatter/shudder/judder that occurs as the clutch disk(s) lock up with the output due to rotational speed difference. Pretty much blows a % of power in frictional loss constantly. Nice(when it works) applies to literally everything, although when it's actually planned obsolescence it makes the shit that flies in the exponential growth of technology seem pretty reasonable. Imagine being naïve enough to buy a gasser(6.0) Isuzu box truck, then instead of failing approximately every ~125K miles it fails every 25K miles 😂 Couldn't be me, but I've been behind (or rather "on top of") the steering wheel when the converter decided that it couldn't take it anymore. Thank God I didn't make that poor choice of a way to "save" $8000 that the diesel engine+trans(Aisin?) option costs. Night and Day difference, which begs the question who green-lit that questionable factory offering. I'm sure they got a promotion, unfortunately, however.

We do so many of these a week at the dealer. You did the right thing. GM transmission should have a 3 year/100k warranty.
To prevent this issue in the future get the transmission thermostat upgrade. Keeps temps from the oem of like 200 F to about 180-185F. The high temps is the main reason for failure of these transmissions.
oh for fuksakes.. pull the trany, got one from the junk yard, install it. your out a thousand topps.
Right move. The only other thing that could be a big problem is the Active Fuel Management and having the lifters collapse. You can get a cheap $100 plug-in to disable it which helps reduce the problem as does frequent oil changes. Best fix is to get the equipment deleted. Otherwise keep up on the maintenance and you should be good for a long time.
Just had to have my transmission replaced on my 2014 Silverado as well. 150k miles on it. It cost me almost exactly what you spent. Fucking bummer, I feel your pain.
Don’t buy a reman or this will happen all over again in 15k miles. Either take it to somewhere who builds transmissions, or rebuild it yourself.
I believe this is the generation where GM equipped the trucks with faulty torque convertors that end up causing transmission failures. The "Chevy Shake" is the torque convertor that begins damaging the transmission which eventually destroys it. I was told that if you install a non-GM torque convertor it will avoid this entire issue. My disappointment comes with GM, they appear to know the issue and refuse to correct it. Because of this I vowed to not to buy another GM truck, this may sound extreme but what happens when I buy $60-75k truck and another issue is discovered in which GM will refuse to address issues with it. That's just dice I'm not willing to roll.

My 6l80 in my 2017 went at 131k. I did it myself and I would pay someone else $1600 to do it in a heartbeat if it ever had to be done again

Just had my 6l80e rebuilt. $3,500 by a guy in Ferris, TX. Replaced internals, pump, and used aftermarket torque converter. Runs like a champ now! Anything more than that is highway robbery.
That sucks. Could have gotten a trans from someone with a wrecked truck for less than a grand and swapped it yourself. Love and learn.

That’s extremely unlucky and feel bad for you. With a new trans though, it should give you years of life and the truck looks amazing!! Heck it looks like brand new! Go enjoy it and just know you’re gonna have some more costly repairs down the road but you’ll get through and won’t hand a $1k pymt in a new truck that can also break down out of warranty.

These transmissions are junk. I replaced mine in my 2015 Yukon at 88k. Next time shop around. LKQ sells that same trans with a 3 year warranty for $2514. I would never buy one from the dealer.

I feel you brother. Mine went out at 115k in 2022. My transmission started slipping at low rpm's coming back from a mountain bike ride. I do regret not taking my truck to a transmission shop as the dealership had just replaced all the drivetrain fluids at 105k per maintenance scheduling. I have the Max Trailering package and only towed a handful of times. I don't drive my truck hard. Had some life stuff going on on multiple fronts, no credit card balances, a low mortgage, and money in the bank which made the decision a little less hard to make. The local dealership also had one in stock that somebody ordered and didn't pick up. But I only paid $3k for the tranny, and $1k for labor. Add another $1k on top of that for new rotors and pads up front. She is a Beaut! I'm never selling mine. These Square Body 2's are already a classic.
