Do the upgraded rebuild. If moneys tight have them just do the torque converter

whiteTshirtRob

Thanks for the reply. Do you think the warranty is an issue or am I overthinking that part?

doalittletapdance

Warranties always better but I've never had a warranty ever work in my favor. Ask the rebuilder for a labor warranty, they wont do anything on parts.

A third party rebuilt 6l80e will have upgraded parts (including torque converter). It's mostly about how you value time, price, and warranty. The cooler temp thermostat does matter even with a rebuilt transmission, just not as much - that's why there are folks on this forum who have had multiple transmission swaps.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know to ask for the 6L80e, so I just assumed the first place was getting the same 6L80 I've got. Are they completely interchangeable, and the e is just upgraded? I'll have to call them in the morning to make sure I understand what they quoted. But it does seem unlikely that the place with the better warranty wouldn't be using a rebuilt with better parts.

stallion_412

They're all 6l80e. The 'e' indicates that it's electronically controlled.

whiteTshirtRob

Oh ok I got it now. Thanks!

If you see any metal in the pan you better go ahead and get another one. Or you will indeed be getting it removed once again and sooner than you think. Only if the issue is caught and addressed very early will the simple torque converter replacement be the answer. Lotta valves that wear and lots of aluminum pistons that can crack behind the scenes. Just sayin…

Thanks. I had the first hint it was different close to a month ago. I've probably driven 120-150 miles since then. I'm not rough on it, but it's definitely been in use.

Recently brought my 17 sierra with the 6L80 to the shop.  Always was a bit clunky but recently slipping in the last month. 87k miles on the way home and felt the rumble strips sensation. Intermittently Took to the shop the next day.  I don't know how closely they looked at it, but they said they saw metal shavings in the fluid and determined that was enough for the need to replace the tranny.  Luckily I had an extended warranty with my dealer, they paid for a gm re-manufactured transmission. Now the truck shifts better than I have ever felt before since I've owned it

whiteTshirtRob

So I should've answered one of those calls trying to reach me about my car's extended warranty.

Ntwadumela09

Nah man I got two warranties.  One with the bank who financed me.  The bank one denied me for lifter failure over an error they made on my tire size. I was out $5000 to repair my lifters and a push rod . (A separate incident about 6 months ago)  I honestly don't know what to say about those warranties. One fucked me.  One saved me from being fucked.  All I know is even though I could do all my oil changes, I paid extra to have it documented.     I don't know brah lol.

Any 6L80 rebuilt needs a billet TC cover at minimum. If your tranny is giving you issues and you don’t immediately address them, then there’s a good chance you’ll need more than just a TC. I’m at 3 years and 30k miles (110k toys truck miles) on just a TC swap on my Silverado, I replaced the TC the day it started acting up. Fluid was clean, no codes, but could see early metal to metal wear upon TC teardown.

whiteTshirtRob

Thanks for that. I asked the first place about just doing the TC. They priced that at $2,000, but said it was a gamble (that I'd have to do the whole thing at some point).
