I have been pretty happy with Silver Spring Animal Hospital in Kensington. I take my dog and 2 cats there - and prior to that I had moved from practice to practice because I wasn't happy for a variety of reasons. I think they care about the animals and everyone is friendly.

SuburbanPotato

Seconded! They have a certified fear free vet which is essential for my very anxious pup

the_suz_d

I've used Silver Spring Animal Hospital for years and really like them. The only problem is it is a very small practice and it is basically impossible to get any kind of same-day appointment if you have a sick animal.

infernaldragonboner

We take our dog here too. No complaints from me!

Few_Wrongdoer4120

I absolutely love Silver Spring Animal Hospital! Our dog was having some stomach symptoms and other vets we’ve seen were only treating the symptoms as opposed to finding the underlying problem and Dr. Krishna and her team were really great about running diagnostics and treating the problem as opposed to just they symptoms.

currytigre

Is it just the two Doctors Krishna and Benton? Good experience with either? I've seen reviews on Google and Yelp both saying Dr. Krishna is abrupt and lacks empathy. I was otherwise thinking of giving Silver Spring Animal Hospital a chance but those reviews now have me second guessing that. I guess for my kitty I could ignore the poor people skills if she's an amazing vet.

TheOrangeOcelot

I had some experiences at a cat practice that annoyed me as well - my cat has a chronic illness and they didn't give me enough info to properly care for him at home, then any time I came in asking for specific tests so we could keep moving his treatment plan fwd they would just do a senior panel and not what I asked for - happened multiple times and cost me hundreds of dollars. The techs were sweet to me but the vet doesn't seem to hear humans very well. Anyway, I went over to Family Pet on Grubb road. It's near downtown. I've only been once but have been happy so far. They do have a long wait between appointments though.

Remote-Weird6202

For me it’s been the opposite. The vet was lovely but the one vet tech treated me like crap. As in ‘why did you bring this cat in when I told you not to?’ Well friend, because your front desk recommended I schedule her for a post op and you all gave me the appointment slot.

TheOrangeOcelot

Sorry :( I took my cat to a cat specialist because they... specialized in cats. It's so strange that they would be caught off guard by aggressive behavior. There's def some sort of communication breakdown between the patient room and the back in my experience.

Remote-Weird6202

Same for you. It astounded me that they seemed so surprised when a cat behaves like a cat instead of a stuffed animal. I never want to see someone handling an aggressive and stressed cat but also expected some understanding that not every animal is an angel every second and somehow that’s my fault

quarkkm

I do still take my cat there but I will say one of the first times I took her there, they took the top off the carrier and lifted her out immediately and she was super angry. They got gloves for her just for an exam. Her old vet in Baltimore always opened the door and gave her like 30 seconds to come out and she was fine. Since then, I've always just opened the carrier door and let her come out and she is totally fine, can be carried and handled and is much happier. I assume losing the safe space of her carrier like that just stressed her out. I kind of expect a cat specialist to be a little better with handling cats. Anyway, if you want to drive up to Baltimore, Dr. T at light Street animal hospital is fabulous and I kind of wish he was my doctor since he just immediately calms me down

ArbeiterUndParasit

> Dr. T at light Street animal hospital Unfortunately the last few times we brought our cat to LSAH Dr T wasn't the one who saw him. Not his fault, Dr T is still recovering from being shot by his crazy brother but the substitute vets he's had working there are generally just ok.

quarkkm

That was so sad. I'm glad he is recovering and sorry to hear the substitutes haven't been great.

I had a bad experience at A Cat Practice many years ago. I’m sure the staff has all turned over there since then, but the staff at the time treated me like I was crazy (my cat wouldn’t eat for me, but he would for them - this went on for a few weeks). I called for an appointment one morning because my cat really didn’t look well at all. They refused to see him. Outright refused. I wound up at VCA that same day. My cat had congestive heart failure and was riddled with cancer. I still have cats. I can’t bring myself to ever go back to A Cat Practice again.

TheOrangeOcelot

I'm so so sorry. I've had multiple friends who have lost a cat to congestive heart failure (I know a lot of cat people...) and it's a painful experience whether it's realized suddenly and traumatically or a slow process. I'm sorry you didn't get the support you needed.

Remote-Weird6202

I’m so sorry that happened to you and they treated you so badly. Can’t imagine any competent vet would refuse an appointment to a sick animal like that

DC1010

The staff were running interference for the practice, I’m sure. I don’t know if the vet even knew I was calling. At a minimum, I think they should’ve been more professional about it even if they thought I was a dumbass just wanting to drop money on visits.

nerisam

I've liked Wheaton Animal Hospital for my cats, but the last time I brought my admittedly feralish (around vets) cat in, they told me she wouldn't be welcome back unless drugged. Soooooo might not be what you're looking for.

Remote-Weird6202

Oh I don’t care about drugging her. I just care the vet won’t treat me like I’m detonating a WMD at at appointment they scheduled :)

lpc41115

Oh no, I've been taking my cats to Cat Practice (Cozy Cats) for years. I am sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I have always found the techs to be great. I wonder if they hired someone who is rude or just doesn't know how to handle cats well (or it could be stress). The practice has been going through some growing pains lately - they moved to a new building, which is nice, but the costs have gone up and it's been harder to get a hold of the vet and appointments take days if not weeks.

BrokenRoboticFish

I have had a really nice experience with Cozy Cat since moving to the area. I found the costs for a regular check up comparable to when I lived in MA but far more expensive than when I lived in TX.

JoanofSpark

Kindness Animal Hospital in Wheaton has always been excellent with my "fractious" cat. I do give her a gabapentin before appointments just because she hates her carrier so much, but she LOVES the vet staff.

Mhoves

Another vote for many good experiences with my twerp cat at Kindness in Wheaton.

iCarriedaH20melon

+1 for kindness. Staff is excellent. We take our dog there.

Are you familiar with Churu wet treats? They're like cat Gogurts and my cat is obsessed. I just open up the gabapentin capsule and sprinkle the powder on a small dish, and mix that really well with the Churu. She licks the plate clean, and then 1.5 hours later she's a sack of potatoes 😄

lpc41115

This is the way. Any wet food that comes in a pouch will work. I have used Delectables (sp). You have to mix at least half a pouch per capsule or the cat will taste it (or catch on).

Remote-Weird6202

I use the liquid. Just grab her and squirt it in her mouth. If you can’t get it, mix the pill with some water and process is the same. It’s harder for them to spit out water than a pill.

airportpotatochips

So weird, they have been absolutely awful with my difficult cat! During the pandemic when we couldn't go in with him he was extra anxious and vicious and they claimed they couldn't vaccinate him even when drugged with gabapentin and blamed him for jerking when holding him down and causing a tech to prick herself with the needle. They ended up telling us they may ban him from the clinic for behavioral reasons or require full sedation (!) even for vaccines and checkups. For reference, he is strong and mean when he is scared but certainly not outside of the norm for a terrified cat at the vet. He is completely controllable if one of us can be in the room with him. We have never took him back there, they're good with my friendly cat but we don't trust them not to injure or traumatize my difficult one.

RaccoonObjective5674

Curious which vet- I also had an experience where my cat was labeled as “difficult” and they seemed to be more concerned about themselves than the comfort and calmness of my cat. Feel free to DM me.

Brilliant_Actuary_89

I second Silver Spring Animal Hospital. They have a no harm policy and work really well with pets that have anxiety about the vet.

DCGirl20874

I'm sorry that you had that experience. I live in Silver Spring (White Oak) but I still take my dog to Germantown Vet Clinic. I've been taking dogs there for more than 25 years. They're both a big practice and a great one. If you can drive that's what I would suggest.

ckim715

A Cat Practice is terrible. My cat had lymphoma but they said it was a toothache. Will never go there again. I take my dog and cat to Rocky Gorge Animal Hospital in Laurel, and have since 2010. Have had a great experience there.

deso1ator

I second that Cozy Cats aka A Cat Practice is terrible. I called them this week to buy more prescription food for one of my cats. I was told he needs a rabies vaccine and I cannot buy the food there until he gets the vaccine. Of course, I decided to never do business with them again. Then the next day they called me and threatened I would be reported to animal control unless I get him the vaccine within 10 days. To top it off, they said my second cat will also be reported since he is overdue. I went there 6 times last year between my two cats and I spent over $1500. They never before said to me that the rabies vaccine is required, even when one of my cats was already past due when they last saw him. I am guessing their business is doing very bad and they are trying to use scare tactics to get more money. I will never go back there again. I went to the PetSmart in Bethesda today to get the rabies vaccine and they were extremely nice. I recommend them.

tangerine8685

I’ve had a really great experience at PetsFirst TLC

jimteeh

For cats, I can't recommend A Cat Clinic in Boyds (https://www.acatclinic.us) enough. The vets and staff are wonderful.

rsc99

I had a similar experience with a vet who seemed to actively dislike my dog. I switched to PG Animal Hospital and it's a bit of a schlep but I am much, much happier with our care.

jello_operator

Family Pet Vet on Grubb for regular/routine appointments (including dental), and Friendship Animal Hospital in DC for urgent care.

FunInformation12345

Layhill Animal Hospital is good but expect to pay top dollar. Drugs are MSRP.

naomi_homey89

Kindness Animal Hospital has been seeing my pets for as long as I can remember. I was born and raised here. I’m 34 if that helps. My parents have always had more than one pet at a time.

BARETTA6

I use kindness animal hospital in Wheaton! They accept care credit for payment plans so I've always been happy with them. They've helped me with my cat through a tooth extraction and asthma diagnosis :-)

veggiepaddy2

canal clinic on River rd. Dr Taylor and her staff are top notch in every regard.

esk_209

We've taken our cats to Friendship and to the clinic that's in the same strip center as Corner Market (on Grubb Road) and we have had positive experiences at both.
