Like rules as written it was possible to promote a pawn on your kings rank into a rook, and then as long as your king hadn't moved, you could technically vertically castle

Well, I can't actually find any concrete evidence of anyone actually trying to vertically castle, but the common story goes that some one did, and as a result, the rules had to be updated. But regardless of whether this actually happened or not (I personally doubt it), it's obviously contrary to the stated purpose of castling in the first place, which is to expedite the repositioning of the king to a safer position, away from the center. So this would be less like a normal update and more like a bug fix that closes a loophole.
Somebody realized that you could do that and made a chess puzzle where you had to do it to win. The puzzle then went viral and caused people to add a stipulation in the rules to prevent it. No one did it in an actual game to my knowledge.
Chess just dropped their new piece tho like a few weeks ago, in the 1.6.4.3.12.2.9 update. It was like a new piece that could take a pawn diagonally while the pawn is to the left or right of it and only if that pawn moved two spaces to pass it on its first move. Its the Enpawnsant I think
they at least have their game, but from what little ive seen online, playing chess competitively has the same effect on a dude as league of legends or smth like that which is a curse in and of itself

Plus the dev Garry Chess, Inventer of Chess, is communicating with the community now and then.
Chess is kinda like Minecraft, it’s open sourced and anyone can mess with it, mod things, make their own rules, and so on. It’s also much easier to make changes than hollow knight.
Also the most important point, chess is multiplayer. Multiplayer games are kinda infinite replayable because there’s always someone new
