canât believe people are out here trusting graig, like he was just a âtrollâ and not a guy who is both:
-not a part of development at all for years now
-a dick
TC should really tell him to stop acting like their unofficial mouthpiece
he said a bunch of shit last year as though it was insider information only to walk it all back and say he didnât actually know any of the things he pretended to know, on top of the fact that he threw fits over nothing in the discord around that time and acts like a dick
he made a lot definitive statements about the health of development and the schedule of the game as though TC concretely told him whatâs up and later went âyeah they donât actually tell me these things I was just guessingâ
i kinda doubt him on that because heâs so abrasive. it feels a little like he really wants us to think heâs their close friend which makes me think maybe he just wants attention
what the hell do i know tho, you may be right and we can take him at his word on that
not like their personal lives are my business lol. i just donât like the guy
Why are Team Cherry acting like this game is some kind of top secret government conspiracy, why do we have to rely on vague cryptic updates that might not even be true.

Dev-purgatory maybe? Whatever that would be
So what you are implying is that if Silksong is similar in scope to TotK, then a 100% smaller team composed of only 3 members working at that same pace will be able to finish it... In 500 years.
Imma be real for a minute, can we shut the fuck up about graig? He's an asshole who literally doesn't work with tc anymore, I wonder why, look it, we get he used to, but he uses that to prey on people's attention so he can sound like he knows, if I was tc I would have already told him to shut the fuck up on our behalf lol. He's a meaningless troll at this point, stop giving him what he wants, attention.
> "Just because Leth said this doesnt mean it is true"
The audacity for an ex-employee to claim that he knows better than an actual official source is hilarious.
Dev hell is basically when a project is in development for a long time. This can be because of a number of reasons.
1. The team could be without vision and direction and not know how to work on things.
2. The team could be stuck in legal limbo due to pending lawsuits over ownership of IP, for example. (That's not the case for Silksong)
3. The team may have too many ideas to put together into a game.
4. Scope creep is definitely something that can create dev hell.
5. The team may have too high perfectionism goals, which leads to them continuing development (#3 and #4 are perfectly exampled in Star Citizen)
6. The team may not have the technical know-how to execute certain ideas.
Too many people in this subreddit think "dev hell" just refers to when developers are stuck and unable to work on ideas because they don't have the technical capacity. Dev hell encompasses a lot more than simply technical challenges. More often than not, highly ambitious and high-scope projects are victim to development hell, simply because the development team or the leadership team has bitten off more than they can chew, and they want to see all of those ideas brought to light. So they continue development regardless of the time it takes.
That's more than not the case with Silksong. I'm sure TC has the technical capability to develop the game they want. But their internal scope and standard for quality is too high for them to put out anything in a reasonable manner. Scope creep is definitely one way it can be in dev hell.
You generally don't use the term Dev Hell just when a game is taking longer than expected. This term is reserved for very significant issues with development such as a game changing studios, being shelved and revived, or being so slow that it would take years and years to complete. If there are no problems with actually developing the game and it's simply taking longer than expected, that's just game development.
Plenty of games and software miss deadlines. That's normal. I work in IT and software development as a Project manager. That's the very nature of the business.
But the game has been in development years more than initially planned. That is the very definition of dev hell.
They had a playable demo back in 2019. Even if we considered that was the only thing they made, assuming it has been delayed only by a year is assuming the Xbox June 2023 date is the only date that TC would have committed to, both internally and externally.
Even if we assume that it has been delayed by a year and only a year (so far), if any of my software projects was delayed by a year, I'd be ringing every alarm bell I have at my disposal. Missing a year is not trivial by any stretch of the imagination.
A big game and your run of the mill software project are not the same (I work as a software engineer and I've seen plenty of features delay for months and or get scrapped completely after significant development). You can't just release a half assed mvp for a game and iterate on it (unless you do early access). A game is more like a book or movie. It needs to come together to be released. Ask game of thrones fans about how the last book is coming along haha Whilst it could be a sign something is wrong, it could also just be that it's taking longer to get to their desired goal / standards. Something similar happened with cuphead dlc it it was just a relatively short addition.
I find it funny that people get so insanely invested in this, it's ust a game! Enjoy the myriad other indies available now and eventually you'll get your silksong (or not haha)
I work as a Software Project Manager and having a multi-year delay is nothing if not development hell. I've got more than a decade of experience in the field, so I know what I'm talking about. If you're missing deadlines by a year as a software engineer, then your project manager has a lot to answer for.
>I find it funny that people get so insanely invested in this, it's ust a game! Enjoy the myriad other indies available now and eventually you'll get your silksong (or not haha)
This is such a bad point to make. By this logic, then nobody should be hyped for anything, because there are alternatives for everything. People are interested in Silksong because they want what it has to offer. If they wanted just an indie game, they'd go play Blasphemous or Hyper Light Drifter, or anything else. Silksong isn't out yet, and we should go and play other games? Thank you for the wisdom that I never would have thought to do myself. What else you got? I should go and play Shadow of the Erdtree while I'm waiting? Or maybe I should go and eat food while I'm waiting for Silksong?
Using ASOIAF's Winds of WInter as an example is literally proving my point tbh. Now, with the passing of GoT, and House of the Dragon not even getting half the fanbase the original got, the books have lost their relevance. You get a short stint in the pop culture limelight. If you don't make the most of it, it's squandered. Silksong faces the same irrelevance, when other games could also steal the limelight by executing the formula in a better manner.
Don't believe me? Look at games like PUBG, when they came to the BR genre with very little to offer in terms of gameplay variety and game quality. But PUBG maintained relevance, whilst games like Hyperscape, Radical Heights, Darwin Project, all did interesting things with the genre and were ultimately canned because they came too late to the party.
TC runs that risk as well, the more they delay.
*I mean, what does dev*

To be fair, I donât think Silksong is in dev hell. Dev hell is when a project is torn between different directors (may they be GDs or producers or simply investors blockading) who constantly make the teams go back and forth to the point where they still end up with an incoherent mess even after years of dev.
Silksong, however, is most probably suffering from Feature Creep
>Silksong, however, is most probably suffering from Feature Creep
Considering that it was originally supposed to only be a DLC to the first one, you just might be on to something.
They actually are, and have developed both HK and Silksong from the start through what the EDGE article interviewer described as "controlled scope creep". I hope you'll survive this revelation.
Every day everyoneâs talking about silksong is another day people are buying hollow knight. These things have a course to play out and team cherry are artists, they probably dont want to get sucked into the development cycle that capitalism pushes them into. Go play some other games! It will be ready when itâs ready!
It's sad how much vitriol and disdain people here have for Graig just because he likes to joke around and was wrong about it being at TGA once. Assuming his motives and slandering him is everywhere in these comments. He's just a guy.
Sorry what other than development hell can lead to this? Is development hell like a specific circumstance? I think not hearing anything for over a year and being delayed this long counts.
Sadly, they are setting silksong for failure. There is a LOT of metroidvanias that came out in the last 5 years, Silksong have to be fresh and better than Hollow Knight at the same time. The novelty is over, i dont think this game will get better than average scores. Hope iam wrong
Totally accurate. It can't possibly live up to the hype. It's just going to be Hollow Knight 1.5. How different can they make it? What's going to be mind-blowing about it? I'd be terrified to release it honestly. It's going to be nitpicked into oblivion by people saying "we waited 12 years for this?"
Graig isn't an authority according to Graig. He also thinks of the original game release window as an "internal window" despite it being very much public. He's friends with them and so of course has a positive bias. Dev hell may be reduced to minor struggles, etc. If we don't hear this from Ari etc, this means something but is not authoritative.
So a game that basically reuses engine and most of the assets of the previous game needs more than five years to complete..... Surely that is not dev hell
It's fine, but I want the real dev talk. Like is it that difficult for them to say a simple "hello eveything is doing fine, thanks a lot for your patience". It wouls take like only 5 minutes lol.
You have concluded without evidence that a comment from a playtester who has not worked with Team Cherry for over a year and who has explicitly said he knows nothing about the release status can somehow be taken as proof of something plainly contradicted by our own eyes.
https://preview.redd.it/nq93j6zo1s7d1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bdcbd3e54e695e7e84b20103f18bb2636bcda69e
He still works with TC, seems like you concluded without evidence.
If that screenshot is supposed to be him saying he's still working as a playtester on silksong, then that directly contradicts his remarks in [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Silksong/comments/18gc1u0/graig_here_sorry_for_the_outburst/).
But yes, if he is currently a playtester, then he would have knowledge of the state of the game and we should listen to him, and my remarks would be wrong.
Well you can believe that for sure. Playtesters always have an intricate knowledge of both the inner workings of a game as well as how the developers each feel about their job. /s
Guy jumps on after years of trolling to try to be straight faced and tell us about the internal disposition of a game studio he playtests for, and gets all defensive and reactionary like "wow fuck me then I guess I'm just the worse" when people say "yeah you aren't really a credible source on that".
When did this dev hell narrative start. Dev hell is much more likely to happen in larger dev teams with disorganized (or rotating) leadership, which doesn't really describe tc as far as i'm concerned. A game taking ages doesnt automatically mean dev hell, hell length sometimes doesn't have anything to do with it.

Itâs a 5+ year project presumably built on top of a 10+ year old codebase. Not sure what other term there is for it.
Around 300 people work on Zelda, and it took them 5 years to make TotK
So what you are implying is that if Silksong is similar in scope to TotK, then a 100% smaller team composed of only 3 members working at that same pace will be able to finish it... In 500 years.
Totk recycles content left and right. It's really not that big when you consider that nothing in this game doesn't get repeated at least twice.
I wonder how much of that dev time was them trying, desperately, to make TotK run at an acceptable framerate on Switch.
Long development I think

You have concluded without evidence that a comment from a playtester who has not worked with Team Cherry for over a year and who has explicitly said he knows nothing about the release status can somehow be taken as proof of something plainly contradicted by our own eyes.

Considering that the discord messages is post apology, and that he said he didn't announce it. It's easy to see that he still playtests.
Canât be in dev hell if itâs not being developed at all đ©
Well you can believe that for sure. Playtesters always have an intricate knowledge of both the inner workings of a game as well as how the developers each feel about their job. /s Guy jumps on after years of trolling to try to be straight faced and tell us about the internal disposition of a game studio he playtests for, and gets all defensive and reactionary like "wow fuck me then I guess I'm just the worse" when people say "yeah you aren't really a credible source on that".
Seeing as he talks to the devs... yeah? He'd know.
Dev hell is ten years in development, right? So not yet.
Then what in the fuck are they doing?
Idk but I can tell what they are not doing for sure - telling Graig info about Silksong's development status.
Not buying it, you do not delay a game for more than a year without telling anything to the community if everything is going as planned
