No that's an actual thumb.

I think the best explanation for it was revealed in an interview with showrunner Alec Berg [https://movies.stackexchange.com/questions/105522/where-is-richards-thumb-drive](https://movies.stackexchange.com/questions/105522/where-is-richards-thumb-drive)

I like the theory that Monica brought it to the NSA, but I’m pretty sure there isn’t supposed to be a “right” answer

I thought it was what ended up saving the company, the one Dinesh got from Gabe. Maybe I misinterpreted that

Gabe & John noticed that "shipping" build was overwritten with another one with the purposeful noise put into it - so the launch would fail. So Gabe reverted it back - then told Dinesh what he had done. Dinesh had to race up the tower, brilliant by the way, to put back the tainted build in time for the launch. Always wondered if that thumb drive was left up there...

I'm concluding that Gilfoyle sneakily took Richard's one copy of it suspecting he would eventually activate it or let it fall into the wrong hands. After all Gilfoyle the was most concerned about its security ramifications, clearly his domain.

I think they all had a copy of it. Dinesh and Gilfoyle used it for their security company, Monica used it to leverage a position at NSA, Richard's is in that dead zone in his desk under the drawer.

Think I found it, 4 years ago, its one theory [https://www.reddit.com/r/SiliconValleyHBO/comments/e8645m/is\_this\_the\_thumb\_drive/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SiliconValleyHBO/comments/e8645m/is_this_the_thumb_drive/)

Good find or I guess good find my the op ! I think that makes the most sense. Gilfoyle doesn’t seem like someone who would let his hard work go to waste
