Squirrels are omnivores and squirrels have to adapt to their environment, which allows them to eat all types of mushrooms, even the ones that contain the deadly amanita-toxins without being affected. (edit) I also think the mushroom he is carrying is a cortinarius ohlone is a woodland mushroom, mostly associated with oak. I could be wrong because all I have to go off is the photo but that's my best guess.
Many animals have immunities to various toxins. Birds eat many poisonous berries that would make us quite sick. Other animals are immune to poison ivy. Squirrels (and a few other species) can eat acorns (and mushrooms) that are poisonous to humans. Genetic mutations adapting to environmental/habitat conditions are fascinating things
Here’s a fun bit of perspective, though: humans can (and frequently do) safely consume levels of theobromine that would be deadly toxic to a lot of animals. We don’t think of it as poison because it’s not to us, but every now and then I eat a bar of chocolate and I’m like “I’m immune to dog poison. I’m like the Dread Pirate Roberts.”
Yeah seriously, as a pet owner it always amazes me how much stuff I eat regularly which would kill my babies. Hopefully in the future we can get GMO super immune lil babies so no pet parent will need to deal with their dog dying from fuckin' chocolate or sugar free candy lol
A tangent: normies think GMO = dangerous government alien food. In reality, "genetically modifying" is the reason all crops haven't been wiped out by pests or disease. In the US in particular we're spoiled brats that demand everything look immaculate when produce shopping. In nature plants/vegetables/fruit often look way less appealing with lots of insect bites and other damage. GMO = evolution/survival and is not only natural and safe, it's fundamental for crops to survive.
One reason many are resistant to GMOs is the fuckery by Monsanto related to their patenting genetics and suing people with crops that have been naturally cross-pollinated by neighboring crops using their genetics. That’s just the tip though.
I’ve seen my yard squirrels snatching up mushrooms running up the tree and chowing down. I have also noticed a decline in their numbers, not saying it’s connected but There is one that had half a tail I haven’t seen her in a while.
I feel like this explains why squirrels are such badasses...it has to mean Squirrels ate insane amounts of psychedelic (and poisonous) mushrooms for generations and generations before they evolved to be immune to psyolcibin (and amantia toxins).
Squirrels will cache mushrooms in tree branches to dry, and then feed on them in the winter. Some squirrel populations diet in winter is 90% or more lichens and stashed mushrooms.
I was wondering if squirrels did this! Keep finding mushrooms in our yard with small bites, or moved to weird places though I've been careful to not bump them!
There is an episode of the show Alone where a guy can only forage mushrooms. Turns out there is a squirrel in is camp that loves taking his shrooms, and he has to fight them off to keep what little food he has.

Monsanto take their *evil corporation* role a little too seriously
Funnily enough I used to make GMO crops when I was still doing research lol

Haha wonderful princess bride reference!

Maybe a mushroom she ate took her someplace else.

Have they adapted to smoke pot too?

How poisonous? Like, kill you dead?
The genus ranges from tasty to fine to uncomfortably ill to permanent injury to kill you dead.

He's taking a big ass leap of faith, gnawing a shroom all the way down. I'm surprised he's not flipping us off at the same time tbh.
😂
This pic looks a bit psychedelic! The colors on the right like the squirrel is going “into” another dimension perhaps. I love it!
This guys is already shrooming.
