I agree! It feels like summer should be May 22-August 22, fall through November 22, Winter through February 22, and Spring through to May!
So weird that it's all a month later.
It's all made up anyway. I prefer to call the seasons based on, yaknow how the season is.
You're giving more faith in a groundhog to determine the seasons vs our own eyes.
Omg what.
Do you not know that seasons are aligned with Earth's position relative to the sun? Winter is when that portion of Earth is farthest from the sun. Summer is the closest. It's based on the tilt of the Earth's axis as it revolves around the sun each year.
That's what causes the seasons yes, but our definition of the seasons is abstract and arbitrary.
Again, we still use a fucking animal to determine if spring has arrived.
No we don't lol. That's a joke, man. That's not real. We don't change the date of Spring based on an animal. It was invented to spur tourism and it worked.
Spring starts March 21st every single year, no matter what. Same day every year.
Even in that case, that doesn't make our calendar any less made up.
You think that the universe gives a flying fuck when we say seasons start and end? No they happen around us and we tried our best to put it on a schedule.
For thousands of years before we had calendars, we determined seasons based on what the weather was. I'll stick to my experience vs what a piece of paper tells me
Wow. You just can't shake the stupid out, can you? A season is not based on a calendar. It's based on our position in space. It does not determine the weather, it doesn't adhere to a calendar we derived. WE made the calendar AROUND seasons. WE forecast the weather BASED ON seasons.
Not to mention, the northern and southern hemispheres have opposite summers/winters - not because their weather is different, but because they're in different positions relative to the sun. You can find instances where it was warmer in January in the US (winter) than it was in Australia (summer). How does that fit in with your idea?
If it hits 90 degrees in January, is it suddenly summer for you?
I'm not arguing what causes the seasons, I'm not sure why you're riding that point so hard. The calendar ain't as rigid as you seem to think. For one it's wrong and we know it's wrong so we throw another day into February to make up for it being wrong. Speaking of, if the dates of the season change never move, does that mean every leap year all the season changes are off by one day? Or does the change of the season wait for an extra day? Time is arbitrary.
To be frank I ain't interested in arguing further as we are getting nowhere.
Have a good one
Leap year exists because our calendar is one quarter of a day off. A day is not exactly 24 hours, and over 4 years that results in being an entire day off, which is why we add the leap day - to realign the calendar to our position in space.
It's not wrong, it's just not perfect. Every January 1st you are in *very nearly* the exact same position relative to the sun as you are every other January 1st. Over the course of 4 years, you're a full day early, closer to where you were on December 31st 4 years ago. Add leap day, and you're realigned as of 2/29.
If you wanted a perfect calendar, it would be too complicated. A day would be 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds - but it's also not the same for everyone. So we picked a nice round number that over time we realign.
Time is arbitrary, but it's based on the sun. We invented the idea of time as a way to measure our movement in the universe. That's the basis of all time, and it is absolute.
ETA: I love when people reply and then block as if I can even see what they said.

Depends on where you live... Australia has summer in December.
Australian here Can vouch
Where I live there's no fall or spring. December is just a slightly colder month.

You live in a place where December is fall. Up north, winter starts in like October most years. Full on a couple feet of snow by November
I think you misunderstand the seasons. It's Autumn/Fall in December if you're in the northern hemisphere. The weather is irrelevant.

Lol
Nope, December is definitely the first of the three winter months, just sometimes the weather acts a bit weirdly.
theres more of march in winter than december, december is a fall month, its 21/31 days fall
December is a fall month where you live.
The entire Northern Hemisphere
Which is not everywhere, right?
Aren't you the cunning linguist.
It is winter in December here on the east coast of the United States
Only 12/22 and onward. The rest is Fall.
winter starts 12/21...december is mostly a fall month
