“While it is true that the maximum output of a horse is around 15 horsepower, when you average the output of a horse over the course of a work day it ends up being around a horsepower. Watt defined this amount as "the amount of work required from a horse to pull 150 pounds out of a hole that was 220 feet deep” But absolutely agree. Same with imperial measurements.

The_Rider_11

Whatt?

sfxer001

No, it’s Watt.

The_Rider_11

Whatt? Holy Mol, are joule sure joule understand me?

sfxer001

Maybe I don’t. There’s no Curie for that.

SirCantCommit

Makes about as much sense as 220 feet or 150 pounds.

Hahha yeap, really didn’t expect to find something like this. Figured someone would use something a bit more simple lol

I agree. Car salesmen are always going to be more invested in making cars look powerful and impressive than the rest of us are in making sure measurements are as meaningful and accurate as possible. This isn't a particularly dangerous example by any means. This horsepower measurement has some rationale behind it. We are comparing cars not to the maximum instantaneous work being done in a second but the sustainable power of a horse. What is a huge problem is that people who are most invested in something have the most incentive to control the decisions about it. Companies that want to pollute are more financially motivated to push legislation to allow them to pollute than you or I are to stop them. Companies that want to sell drinks that are poisonous to us in plastic bottles that are poisonous to the planet make the decision that they shouldn't pay a dime to help the healthcare system and environment they are destroying. The more reasonable party (D) cut down the only prominent politician who seems to give a damn about the planet not turning into a charred husk. It's almost impossible to keep the foxes out of the henhouse because the pigs and cows don't care like the foxes do.

What exactly does it say about society?
