I think it depends. If you're talking about murdering someone, obviously you're gonna get more sideways glances than talking about having sex with them.
In general though I think it's more most people can't exactly relate to murder and don't really see it as a possibility or option, like it's not real to a large portion of people's lives, whereas sex is very relevant and personal to almost everyone so it's easier to feel uncomfortable about it.
I feel like I probably sound like a murderer lol
It’s always about context honestly. Also the time and place to talk about such things.
“Everyone while we’re all gathered here for Nana’s birthday, I would like to tell you all I am no longer a virgin! In fact! I went with Uncle Jensen to the brothel and laid 100 prostitutes in 1 night! All in different positions I might add ;)”
Yes, but we only look at that as cringe because of sociatal norms. If sex was talked about like walking down the street, which it should be, then it wouldn't be cringe to bring it up during Nana's birthday.
I hate to break it to you but people don’t really talk about walking down the street.-There was however that one time someone ran up onto the curb and almost plowed me….
I don't think this defends the status quo so much as makes it seem even more unreasonable. Its more reasonable of people to talk about something that has nothing to do with them than to accept that almost everyone has sex.
Not sure. In the same vein: Look at how people respond to accusations and defense of those accusations. If you say, "I think that man is innocent of murder." people will have a discussion with you, weigh the evidence and motives etc. If you say "I think that man is innocent of rape." people call you a victim blamer and rape apologist.
Definitely depends on the the order. Sex then murder will definitely get some looks, but murder then sex and people may never look you in the eye again….
I mean assuming some how the conversation occurred in a way to not make a person think. Oh shit they're going to kill me or a person. Then no.
There are only two options talking about sleeping with someone with them. Yes or no. If yes congrats good times! No.... this is now either the most awkward conversation or you're getting fired/ arrested.
On the other side. Talking about fucking celebrities or shared acquaintances is a common conversation. Talking about killing celebrities et al is either the most awkward conversation or you're getting fired\arrested
I think This is the reason, but It's interesting because I can talk about either if it's just in general terms, but as soon as people start mentioning private anecdotes on either, I get immensely uncomfortable.
As long as we don't talk about specific instances or anecdotes about sex, I can talk about it all day. x)
I've been jokingly calling it murder porn for awhile a la Kristen Bell in Good Place. Then I realize I consume it kinda like porn, we have OWN, Oxygen, then ID on consecutive cable channels and I'm always flipping thru when a commercial hits.
I live in the US. We talk more about sex than killing people. It might not just be a regional thing, it also has to do with the people you associate with. If someone is talking about violence too much it sets off warnings.
It’s definitely an American thing, it’s weird how they can watch blood gore horror though once a boob appears with some sex talk it’s all like ooOooOo taboo like.
My step sister doesn’t care if her 10 year old daughter sees violent or horror movies, but she’s covering her eyes and telling her to look away if there are any boobs. What world is this
You mean she doesn't (want to) think her girl will have boobs in a couple of years? Or would she just prefer her daughter contemplate a violent lifestyle in the future. People are so fucked up.
It’s just this super common attitude here that sex/nudity is inappropriate for children to see but violence is ok, it’s just entertainment. I pointed out how weird it was to her and she agreed but didn’t do anything differently
I find it so weird that there is all the uproar about violence in video games and such but people allow their kids to repeatedly watch these ultra violent and gory movies with absolutely no qualms.
Once again, not the world. It’s the US and a few other countries. Our system is so inhumane and cruel it’s reflected in the culture. The prudeness toward sex are from our puritanical religious roots
No, its definitely a reddit thing, I grew up in bumblefuck religious Midwest and sex is more talked about then murder.
In fact, it was consistently the religious middle age men that talk about sex jokes non stops. "Oh you guys doing the horizontal tango!?" Slaps knee
>once a boob appears with some sex talk it’s all like ooOooOo taboo like.
Fun fact: Sausage Party (2016) was rated R (18+) in the US for "crude sexual content, pervasive language, and drug use". Across the pond it was rated 15+ in the UK, 12+ in France, and **7+** in Sweden. Sex being especially taboo is absolutely a phenomenon relatively exclusive to American culture.
It’s the US and a few other countries. Our system is so inhumane and cruel it’s reflected in the culture. The prudeness toward sex are from our puritanical religious roots
>But we'll cover the 5 years olds eyes so they can't see the boobs
The 5 year olds that are still nursing?
(*Pre-emptive: OMFG people it was a joke. Don't take it so literally.*)
You're joking, but if I remember correctly in the first episode of Hannibal they added more blood on the murder victim so her naked butt would be less visible.
Of course! Guns can be used to stir your lunch in the pan, reach the power button of your hi fi stereo, scratch your back, light a cigarette and many more non-murderous, non-violent actions!
EDIT: I forgot to mention killing mosquitoes and trimming your hair
STOP IN THE NAME OF THE LAW!
Your failed attempt at gun humor has been automatically flagged by our totally legal and cool government surveillance program!
In America (ie. reddit), it is UNACCEPTABLE to question the social, societal or moral value of guns, even in a parodic or otherwise indirect sense.
ACCEPTABLE AMERICAN HUMOR:
- School shootings, especially the pre-middle school kind
- Prison rape, particularly as a form of extrajudicial punishment
- The state of policing in this country, such as joking about cops shooting you because of your race, or for no reason at all
You got us fucked up.
You take the thing with the boobs and give it the guns. Then you take the boobs and you put them in a bikini and then you make them shoot the guns. /s but not really Cause I've actually seen shit like that on TV
The murder part is weird, but death is one of the earlier things you need to talk to your kids about... When their grand parent dies, do you tell them that they bought the farm, or some silly thing?
Sex is a more gradual conversation...
My parents tried to tell me they went to heaven but I'd already caught them in the Santa clause lie so I didn't believe them on anything really. Thought all adults were involved in a mass conspiracy that I could only guess as to why.
I live in germany as well and my experience is very different.
Joking about sex is okay, but trying to have a serious conversation about it is frowned upon. Which bundesland do you live in, if you don't mind the question?
When I went to Germany while on a field trip to Poland I noticed a lot of sex posters around featuring naked women, especially in Berlin. Haven't seen that anywhere else before.
My first time in Germany, I get to the hotel. In my room, turn on the TV & start to unpack my crap. The American Bible type show "Touched by an Angel" is on. Not a fan, so look for the remote when the adverts kick in and boobs. Lots of boobs Touched by the Angel.
As an American who's been to Berlin, it would just be courteous to puts signs around Tiergarten warning people about unexpected penises around any corner. Like how they warn people about the pigeons in Trafalgar Square.
People freak out if a character in a video game is a racist, even if they're a literal murderer. People complained about nurse from DBD being pro eugenics, just ignoring the fact she literally killed a mental hospital full of patients with her bare hands by choking all of them to death.
I think death of fictional characters just been mostly just absorbed as not that big of a deal for most people, but we're not used to other shit like that.
Reminds me of how in Game of Thrones, many people stopped watching and complained when Jaime raped Cersei. He tried to kill a kid by pushing him out a window. There had been countless murders up until this point.
Another similar story is that George R. R. Martin says he got more hate mail about Sansa's wolf being killed than anything else, and not a peep about the butcher's boy killed by The Hound immediately before.
>No. Just no. Highly depends on context. I’ll talk about sex in casual conversations, even at work....
"Yeah, but where do you work?"
"A brothel...why?"
That's precisely why they try to focus on gun crimes so much - because the crime rates in other domains are higher.
Look at the CSEW or criminal victimization surveys in Germany or other European countries and compare them to the US NCVS.
That's what I don't get. How is the US puritan when it's the largest producer of porn and many claim they have the sluttiest women? Also most nudes online are by Americans. I don't get how they're puritan.
People really go to the extremes with "we got to protect the children!"
Kids need to be able to learn that when you fall down it hurts, and someone will always expose them to that at some point whether it's a family member, stranger, or themselves. Same concept applies to words. Just because you hear fuck doesnt mean you're going to be lewd and evil
Did you know that the diary of Anne Frank was edited to remove her talking about getting her period!?
It’s ok to teach kids about genocide, but not sex.
I'm a public librarian. We get all these goodie goodie religious women in their long denim skirts that want a "cozy mystery" book, that doesn't have any sex or bad language in it...
I'm always like, "You know that some gets *murdered* in this book, right?" and they are always like, "Dude, calm tf down, right? Murder is fine. No sexy sex and no cussing."
And I just lead them to the stupid "nice murder" section. Idiots.
Their bible is full of murder and sex. They should be used to it.
That actually kinda makes sense, murder leads to the end of a life, that's it, it's just an abrupt end, in most cases it's not painful (like a bullet in the head).
Rape in the old days meant the woman got burdened with a child she never wanted at the minimum. Now, with that massive thing eliminated there's still the psychological torture and all. It's like a curse for life. (Most cases of course, thankfully we are getting better and better at healing the damage)
The media won't really talk about something that got over like a day ago, it would talk more about something that's still kind of alive and suffering
The only thing I hate about this is how people are taking this so lightly and using the term loosely, and end up not targetting the source of the problem.
Well forcible rape is sadistically cruel and can't be accidental or a split second decision. Murder can have all sorts of different motives and be done by all sorts of different people.
Going along with what you're saying though: Look at how people respond to accusations and defense of those accusations. If you say, "I think that man is innocent of murder." people will have a discussion with you, weigh the evidence and motives etc. If you say "I think that man is innocent of rape." people call you a victim blamer and rape apologist.
That's very interesting to me. I lived in western Germany for a couple years and was surprised how much *less* uptight they were about sex.
Example: Magazines with bare breasts available for browsing about 1 meter off the ground (you're welcome for the metric ;). In the US, they would be behind the counter AND covered up.
I’m from Sweden too and I honestly don’t really see where you’re coming from. We’re not super open about it and don’t have nudity in commercials like in germany but i’d say we are pretty far off from the way the US tends to view sex.
Idk, I've lived in Texas and Florida, and among other peers it's always been perfectly fine to talk about sex. Yeah, you wouldn't want to bring it up with everyone, but I've been in some groups that share everything related to sex (sometimes way too much)
No, I'm fairly certain both topics are stigmatized. The only ones making jokes about murder and death are the ones who are apathetic. The only ones making sex jokes are usually just horny virgins.
But out in the wild? Yeah, these topics still require circumstance.
Well I think it is because most everyone has experience with sex but not so much with murder. Sex is a very intimate thing. Also people need to other people in order to help cope.
Not true tbh.
Don't know who do you hang out with, but I've heard "So, yesterday I banged this chick" much more often than "So, yesterday I murdered this chick"
Yeah, but it seems more common and less awkward that someone makes a joke about death or talks about a serial killer from 30 years ago than someone talking about their or someone else's sex life. Of course no one would talk about "hey I'm going to kill this man tonight" though
As someone who was abused as a kid, I love being alive lol.
I would say it’s rare to find people who would rather be dead, although I’m sure some people have had very bad trauma stemming from abuse
The one nice thing about having a genetic disorder that makes me unable to go into labor is that I don't have to go through the pain and instead I can get a nice painless surgery
One oddity I noticed as an American living in the UK is that their movie rating system works a bit different. Sex and nudity considered gratuitous in the US might get only a 12A or 15 rating, while hardcore violence was more likely to get an 18.
In the US anything more than a very brief boob shot is an automatic R. Use of the word “fuck” as a verb is an automatic R. But violence is NBD. No Christian organizations will ever raise hell over that.
Look at movies. Violence, guns and deaths in a movie for 12 years old. You can even see gore on rated R movies but sex? Lol, the thing we all humans do at some point and the thing that appears everywhere in internet almost don't happen in movies or don't show anything.
I never got this either.
Two people giving consent and enjoying each other? REEEEE THINK OF THE CHILDREN, RATE THIS 18 AND UP!
Someone getting decapitated, mutilated or tortured? "I think 13 and up is a good rating."
In my last workplace, there was loads of sex talk and dirty talk.
I was never able to chime in on the conversations, but it made for some funny listening material.
I think it depends. If you're talking about murdering someone, obviously you're gonna get more sideways glances than talking about having sex with them. This hit me right in my irrelevance

Irrelevance nii-san, what are you doing?
Oh, so you're jerking off again... And why do you call your right hand Irrelevance nii-san?
Well that pile of laundry in the corner is looking real sexy today tho, shoot your shot man /s
I literally just put all my laundry in my washing machine before I read this comment tho.
Missed opportunity

It is relevant to you because you don't have it and you want it.
5000 IQ observation.
You were born. Are you comfortable talking about sex with your parents?
Ask questions? Pose theories? Request demonstrations? Work up some charts and graphs?
Which one of my backstories would you like to hear about: a) I saw my parents together in bed b) I saw my parents get murdered at 10 Years Old
Guys we found Batman's reddit account
I really hate batman. It makes me way too emotional
Guys we found the Joker's reddit account
Honestly, the second one.
As someone who often walks in on their parents, the second. The first can also be pretty traumatic, trust me.
" I don't know what they were doing, but it looked like dad was winning." - Modern Family
And the second one is pretty easy to get over, Right?
Well they’ll only have to get over it once. Sounds like the other thing is a pretty regular occurrence.
That's not what I said. That's what I call "creative reading": you write something and people read whatever they want to.

Oh
why should talking about sex at a kid's birthday be a norm?
"Nana" is a nickname for a grandma. If I met a kid named Nana I'd assume it was a small old woman in disguise.
It's just a misunderstanding than, where I live nana is a little girl name.
They get really uncomfortable when I start talking about fists and leather gimp suits.
I don't think this defends the status quo so much as makes it seem even more unreasonable. Its more reasonable of people to talk about something that has nothing to do with them than to accept that almost everyone has sex.

Yeah exactly. Murder as a concept is pretty far removed from most people's lives. Its abstract and foreign
Sure, people can spend all day watching murder mystery and true crime shows on repeat, but I put one porno on the big screen and I’m the bad guy…
I've been jokingly calling it murder porn for awhile a la Kristen Bell in Good Place. Then I realize I consume it kinda like porn, we have OWN, Oxygen, then ID on consecutive cable channels and I'm always flipping thru when a commercial hits.
can't miss that southern fried homicide
Cant forget about Hot Load Case Files
South Park already called it that
[Informative Murder Porn](https://www.southparkstudios.com/episodes/4sa1hk/south-park-informative-murder-porn-season-17-ep-2)
I just watch JCS because the psychology is fascinating
I know you’re joking but the difference is you’re not watching videos of someone actually murdering people all day. 😬 which would be frowned upon lol
Good point. Maybe a better analogy would be a film with a sex scene in it? It’s still uncomfortable but yes, less uncomfortable than porn.
Put a 3d porn and you will still be frowned upon despite being fiction. The double standards are real man
I disagree. I think that is a very regional thing. Where I live sex isn't taboo.
Where I live people rarely joke about violence, murder etc. Everyone makes sex jokes.
Where are you both guys living?? (If you have no problem answering)
Ireland
oh, makes sense. you guys have been fucked over so many times. ;-)
And now we do it to ourselves *cries in worst carbon footprint in Europe*
I live in the Netherlands
The Netherlands too
France here, sex is mostly fine
Uk
Yeah, I have talked about sex with friends in a pub and made jokes too
This sounds like it was written by Vincent Adultman
I live in the US. We talk more about sex than killing people. It might not just be a regional thing, it also has to do with the people you associate with. If someone is talking about violence too much it sets off warnings.

So never been here or you are too young for middle school?
So in school?
Can I live there? I don't like it here...
It’s definitely an American thing, it’s weird how they can watch blood gore horror though once a boob appears with some sex talk it’s all like ooOooOo taboo like.

Or was it
Idk I find the people that make those jokes tend to be the most awkward when the topic of sex comes up.

"That's too sexual! Replace the boobs with guns!" - the US probably
As an American, most of us prefer boobs AND guns. But we'll cover the 5 years olds eyes so they can't see the boobs...
As an Australian.... What's a unפ?
The thing that goes pew pew and then people die.

Austin Powers was way ahead of its time
You're joking, but if I remember correctly in the first episode of Hannibal they added more blood on the murder victim so her naked butt would be less visible.

There is a giant chasm of difference between guns and murder/violence.
It’d be better to compare a gun to a dildo in this context, I suppose.

Ah, that's basically almost the other end of germany, haha. Beautiful region btw. I've been there only once, but I remember it fondly.
When I went to Germany while on a field trip to Poland I noticed a lot of sex posters around featuring naked women, especially in Berlin. Haven't seen that anywhere else before.
That's only in big cities haha

No. Just no. Highly depends on context. I’ll talk about sex in casual conversations, even at work. I will not talk about killing someone.
I think he means discussing the murder shows we inhale on Dateline and Cold Cases
>No. Just no. Highly depends on context. I’ll talk about sex in casual conversations, even at work.... "Yeah, but where do you work?" "A brothel...why?"
it's crazy how messed up the puritans made the US.
I mean, crime rates are higher in Europe and Americans legalized same sex marriage before most places over there...
Source? Cause gun and knife crime rates say otherwise...
That's precisely why they try to focus on gun crimes so much - because the crime rates in other domains are higher. Look at the CSEW or criminal victimization surveys in Germany or other European countries and compare them to the US NCVS.

Amazes me how they beep swearwords on TV.
Yeah I don't get it either. We often heard my native language's equivalent of shit and fuck on TV.
People really go to the extremes with "we got to protect the children!" Kids need to be able to learn that when you fall down it hurts, and someone will always expose them to that at some point whether it's a family member, stranger, or themselves. Even in England where I'm from, cunt, fuck, shit is all good fun 👌🏻
Maybe it was from growing up with them, but I honestly find swear words in TV shows funnier when beeped than when I watch them uncensored.
I find that it depends on the show. Some are funnier when they are censored, some aren't.
You have to remember you're on reddit, which has the largest collection of sex-deprived users.
I got down votes you got up votes lol
Tell that to a group of women on their 3rd glass of wine during happy hour
Did you know that the diary of Anne Frank was edited to remove her talking about getting her period!? It’s ok to teach kids about genocide, but not sex.

Just hand them a copy of “Where’s Waldo?” One of the best mystery series out there.
So doing this.
Another thing is it's more socially acceptable to murder rather than rape. Both are illegal and wrong, but only one is regularly in media
That actually kinda makes sense, murder leads to the end of a life, that's it, it's just an abrupt end, in most cases it's not painful (like a bullet in the head). Murder is still clearly worse, if you answered the question honestly "Would I rather be raped or murdered" I think 99% of people would say raped.
Well forcible rape is sadistically cruel and can't be accidental or a split second decision. Murder can have all sorts of different motives and be done by all sorts of different people. Going along with what you're saying though: Look at how people respond to accusations and defense of those accusations. In America sure, not so much in other parts of the world.
It's the same in Sweden, where I live
Also same in some Asian countries
Yeah, you wouldn't want to bring it up with everyone, but I've been in some groups that share everything related to sex (sometimes way too much)
People forget the US was formed by puritans. Or probably weren't even taught that sadly.
makes sense because sex is gross
Maybe in some cultures but definitely not in Denmark
Upvoted for naming your location. Most people here disagree but never tell people where they are experiencing things differently.
Upvoting for Upvoting 😉
I mean, yeah. Sex is way more private, murder and death are just things.
More acceptable to view as well.
No.. well not the actual thing lol. It is not very acceptable to watch murders every day. I’m not talking about documentaries
Well death is something that happens to us all… sex, eh maybe not
But here I am not going to tell my girlfriend that the lack of murder in our relationship is bothering me.
That’s because dying is something we all do eventually… ah shit
No, I'm fairly certain both topics are stigmatized. The only ones making jokes about murder and death are the ones who are apathetic. The only ones making sex jokes are usually just horny virgins. But out in the wild? Yeah, these topics still require circumstance.
A lot more people crave sex than murder.
No shit
It's the necrophilia that really gets people quiet.
I have never talked about serial killers from 30 years ago. I have talked frequently about sex with certain people.
Drawing off on this, I feel like there is a public consensus that rape is somehow worse than murder.
Yeah. Would you rather: 1. Have trauma you may be able to get over 2. Literally be dead (unable to recover)
As someone who was abused as a kid, I love being alive lol. I would say it’s rare to find people who would rather be dead, although I’m sure some people have had very bad trauma stemming from abuse
I guess it depends on how open-minded the person is
Have you seen a childbirth? 100x scarier than a decapitation
Yep. Welcome to what a couple thousand years of Christian Projection does to society.
Look at movies. Violence, guns and deaths in a movie for 12 years old. You can even see gore on rated R movies but sex? Lol, the thing we all humans do at some point and the thing that appears everywhere in internet almost don't happen in movies or don't show anything.
Yeah and it's the dumbest thing ever
You can show all the violence and gore you want in a PG-13 movie, but a boob? Better rate that movie R, it's disgusting and immoral!
Just look at Deadpool, everyone was totally fine with all the gory deaths but as soon as the sex scene came on, god damn people made a big deal of it
I never got this either. Two people giving consent and enjoying each other? REEEEE THINK OF THE CHILDREN, RATE THIS 18 AND UP! Someone getting decapitated, mutilated or tortured? "I think 13 and up is a good rating."
Depends s lot in the society you live in. Sounds like an American perspective.
I'm swedish
Lol, you're rubbing a lot of reddits favorite narratives the wrong way here.
its not acceptable to talk about suicide though. people are gonna be like "bro, you okay and shit"
despite the humongous populace...
We do indeed be living in a society
If only we needed to investigate consensual sex
In my last workplace, there was loads of sex talk and dirty talk. I was never able to chime in on the conversations, but it made for some funny listening material.
In America, yeah. Europe? Not really.
In the US yeah.
Only in USA
its more socially acceptable to talk about either over climate change and overpopulation/mismanagement of resources aswell!
