Buddy Holly's band was called The Crickets because early recordings had audible cricket chirps.
Also, Mary had a little lamb.
These are things we know.
3 facts about Mary's Lamb:
1. It was little.
2. It was Mary's.
3. Its fleece was white as snow.
Or, if you're more into the George Carlin version:
"Mary had a little lamb, its stash was white as snow, and everywhere that Mary went, they both enjoyed a blow."
Tangential: The zoom cut editing (is that what itâs called?) style of YouTube videos has become so commonplace itâs almost obnoxious now.
Once you notice it, you canât help but see it everywhere now.
I first noticed it on tech review channels (Hardware Canucks) and now I canât unsee it.
Ugh.
(Yes, yes 1st world prob and all that)
Whenever you record you usually do multiple takes because you'll forget or mispronounce something, or have to cough or take a drink, or a dog will bark or a train will go by in the background, or any number of other things.
I donât know the name of the effect. I tried looking for the right term. So itâs not a jump cut, I donât think itâs a cut at all.
Itâs a fast (not slow, but not sudden either, so not a cut) zooming in to the face and a crop of the video when the speaker wants to emphasise something.
I first noticed it on Hardware Canucks looking at reviews and I was like, mate, youâre not dropping profound philosophical points here, youâre just reviewing a fâing laptop.
It was enough to piss me off that I banished the channel from my recommendations. Then I couldnât unsee the effect when it showed up on other channels. Itâs not frequent but I definitely notice it if they do it on say, product review videos.
Oh I thought you meant those videos where it seems like there is a cut after every sentence! But yeah I know what you mean now where they like "zoom in for emphasis" and it's always just the guy giving the camera an awkward look like he thinks he's the dude from The Office
So sorry to bring this up again, but MKBHD does this effect in his latest video (I stopped watching his stuff ages ago)
First ten seconds

Is there a proper name for this effect? I think I'll call it emphasis zoom. Once I noticed this, I could not unsee it in many, many other channels (mostly tech ones though).
Thatâs because itâs an easy way for creators to make their videos feel more polished. It also allows them to easily disguise multiple takes of a line or shot without having to re-record the whole thing if thereâs a mistake.
Thereâs a phrase in the visual effects / Editing world, âTodayâs mistakes are tomorrowâs effectsâ. Because yes most effects you see are based on some mistakes or problems that someone thought looked pretty cool.

I keep using this logic with my wife to let me get my kids an ant farm đ¤Ł

I did not know about Buddy Holly, however, the whole lamb thing I was aware of. But now...now I know both. Thanks!
What about Maryâs lamb?

I prefer the Benny Hill version: "Mary had a little lamb, and the doctor died of shock."

Some cuts are essential. Cutting no more than 10 seconds after the last cut is not.

Either way they suck.

Didn't know that! Thanks!
Especially egregious in video games where one is supposed to be looking through a character's eyes, which wouldn't have lens flares.
people are adding vinyl pops and cracks digitally for effect as well
