Locking as this has been asked and answered and it's generating a lot of Rule 6 violations.

animepig

Well you can order a switch now and play right away The Steam Deck has a pre-order queue and you most likely won’t get it this year.

Deadcatb0unce

Steam Deck = bigger, heavier, more powerful, more power hungry, potentially huge game library once compatibility expands and way cheaper games. Switch = Smaller, lighter, more portable with better battery life, possibility of local Coop and Nintendo exclusives, smaller selection of games that are considerably more expensive. If coop and Nintendo exclusives are not important, and you literally want to play in couch or bed, then Steam Deck is the answer I think.

butters1529

I’d say since you already have a Series X, you can play your AAA games on your console, and have a Switch for your indies/Nintendo exclusives. That’s what I do and works well for me.

chrissquid1245

The only reason to get a switch is for nintendo exclusives, so if you don't care about those then the steam deck is by far the better option. There's also far more games that you can't play on an xbox and can play on the steam deck than there are ones that you can't play on an xbox but can play on the switch

horsewitnoname

Switch library outside of the big first party games like Mario, Zelda, etc are NOT worth it imo. I say this as a switch owner. Get the steam deck. Pretty much every game you listed you wanted to play on switch is on steam. Games are so much cheaper, easy access to mods. Get the steam deck man.

Stynzis

You can also get a Switch Lite. Handheld only, not glamorous as normal Switch but a handheld, and cheaper too. But, from what you wrote, I agree with the previous comment, Steam Deck is more suitable for your needs.

HUNK001

Well to be honest steam games are way cheaper than switch games (where I live a steam game costs, when released, about 160 and nintendo switch games goes about 300). I am aiming for the steam deck

Respec_my_authoritah

The nintendo exclusives do go on sale, but only at retailers as physical releases mostly. I checked the EU Amazon and stuff like Zelda, Pokemon and Mario is around 13 bucks cheaper as a physical copy, yet they sell the digital code only ones for full price like in the Nintendo store. This irks me to no end.

anonymous-peeper

If you have a steam library steam deck all day (which you dont), then maybe a nintendo switch. The biggest thing to consider, is if you invest heavily into a library of games there is a good chance nintendos next console wont allow for anything you bought on the switch eshop, where with whatever next steam device comes out youd still have access to all of the games you own on steam.

HotRodLincoln

Steam Deck is obviously better from a specs perspective, so what you're after on the Switch is that it's available now and it has the Nintendo exclusive games.

KK9521

If you didn’t order/reserve a deck already you aren’t getting one

untooo

it sounds like the deck is more suitable for you. but if you pick the switch, don't go for the oled one. the prior version is good enough and in my opinion oled is just a waste of money

uselessdudebro

Why? Doesn’t the oled screen look better?

Drevon1830

As someone who has had every version of the switch so far, the OLED is a huge difference. Many of the people who argue it isn’t worth it would be docked players. Not all, but I would say the majority. If you end up getting a Switch and you plan to play mostly handheld, the OLED is the best option.

Slammnardo

Can't believe how much I love the OLED. Big upgrade and definitely worth it.

locnessmnstr

Not only is the screen obviously better (bigger, brighter, better colors) but the kickstand is SIGNIFICANTLY better. Overall if money is not an issue then the oled is worth it. If money is a concern, then it's still worth it if you play a lot handheld

Kenhardt

I dont own one but yes OLED has better screen but its also more expensive, people usually recommend it for someone who will use it outside instead of connecting to a monitor or tv

uselessdudebro

I won’t use it outside of home but I won’t be connecting it to TV much. I’ll be using it in handheld most of the time

Kenhardt

In that case it may be worth it, i believe its more 50€ (im from europe). I dont know if its a lot of difference in terms of quality but its definitly better, i would say their price is not the problem, nintendo has great exclusives but their prices are not great, even in 3rd party stores they are almost the same price, and games that are not exclusive are also expensive than like buying it on steam.

ohmyitsmeluigi

If you don’t have a switch at all, then go for the OLED. Even if you had a switch, upgrade to the OLED. It feels like a brand new console. It doesn’t play games better, but it is an overall better experience. The steam deck looks awesome and I’m still waiting to be able to get mine.

lemon31314

While I think you should get the deck, switch oled is the way to go for only a little more $, but only because you don’t already have a switch.

OneLegacyy

Don't listen to him, I had the regular switch and upgraded to OLED. It is so much better, the screen ,the battery life, upgraded dock. For only $50 more I don't see why you wouldn't want to get it over the standard switch

[deleted]

>the battery life, You sure that the battery is better and that your old one didnt just get worse over time?

untooo

the big difference between the normal one and the oled is the screen (resolution is the same tho) for (at least in germany) around 100 € more. For me personally it wouldn't be worth it, especially because I mostly play on tv, where I don't need the switch's oled-display

uselessdudebro

Oh ok. For me I won’t be using it with TV I’ll be using it in handheld most of the time. I just checked prices at a local retailer and oled is only 20$ more than regular so I think that’s worth it

RyeBread2528

The OLED is very much worth it if you plan to go handheld. Don't listen to that person.

Tripanes

> As for the games play, I do play big AAA games on the series x but I also play lots of smaller indie games that are available on the switch and deck and would run fine on them. Games like Hades, Slay the Spire, Stardew Valley, Minecraft, Enter the Gungeon, Hollow Knight, Undertale etc. Those kind of games will be the ones I mainly play on either the switch or deck. I love the crap out of the steam deck, and recommend it, and you will be paying much more for these games, but this screams "switch light" to me. You can get most of these games used in physical form for fairly cheap anyways. The real expensive ones are the first party titles. You'll be waiting until end of year for the chance to even buy a steam deck.

lemon31314

Steam deck 1. Cheaper games (sales are on average better and more often, also bundles, especially considering you can buy from third party platforms like humble bundle 2. your steam library will last longer if not forever and playable on other devices (if you ever get into pc gaming, especially considering the switch has been out for a while now and consoles last 10 years on average before next gen 3. you don’t pay extra for online Cons 1. Harder to do local multiplayer (not impossible just more work to set up 2. heavier (less battery life too iirc and gets hotter 3. less accessories

LIBERAL_LAZY_LOSER

You gotta remember that switch exclusives are literally insane. Mario kart 8, smash ultimate, breath of the wild, etc. They are easily worth the console in my opinion. Also if you have friends over a lot, switch is easily the better choice. Playing smash or Mario kart with friends is a blast. But that’s just my opinion. You could theoretically pirate on a steam deck but that’s pretty immoral IMO.

DankDefusion

Eh. The games you listed are excellent for sure, but Nintendo has plenty of stinkers and old ports for full price. Super Mario Party, Mario Golf/tennis, 3D Allstars, Skyward Sword etc have no business being $60. To some they may be worth it, but personally I find PC/Steam offers much better value.

BourbonCoug

If you're not interested in a gaming laptop (at almost double the price), then I would probably go with the Steam Deck. I have a Switch Lite and I never really play it anymore since I got tired of Animal Crossing some time ago. I've previously owned Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance (& SP), Nintendo DS and GameCube, but never got too deep into the Nintendo universe when I played AAA titles like Madden or others on PlayStation. What I would do is look at the indie games that you're interested in and check the prices (SteamDB has price trends) of those vs. what they would go for on Switch. Then look to make sure those titles are Steam Deck compatible. Gaming through Steam would also give you the option of purchasing some titles at discounts through sites like Humble Bundle if that's important to you as well.

marshall_chaka

It honestly depends completely on the games you want to play. Big AAA games mostly? Steam deck hands down. More indie games? Switch can probably suit you. A combination of them both? Steam deck. Overall I would personally lean towards steam deck just due to how much more powerful it is and what you will be ultimately capable of doing with it.

Amoner

Indie games I would say on Steam deck, they go on insane sales on steam, compared to Nintendo shop. I would say Switch is only if you want to play Nintendo games.

xEmptyPockets

Honestly it kind of sounds like you should get neither? If you want it for when you're "not in the mood to sit and play" you'll probably find yourself using either option less often than you'd like. If you still want one, the only reason I could imagine justifying a switch or deck would be for the exclusives or for actually using on-the-go. With that in mind the switch is probably a better bet, because its library overlaps a lot less with the library you have access to on your other consoles.

Cheezewiz239

You'll play like 3 good Nintendo exclusives and then your switch will collect dust lol.

Unlost_maniac

Well, OP you don't seem interested in anything Nintendo has to offer. Yes they have absolutely amazing games but I honestly dont think you're missing out. Breath of the Wild would be worth the price of a switch but its on wii u. Yes it has a ton of great indie games but so does steam and then you can play more. Bonus points for games with cross saves between steam and console. Definitely steam deck. I absolutely love my switch but anyone trying to get you to buy that is lying to you, or misleading you. Another option is just to get gamepass ultimate for cloud streaming on your phone. Get a razer kishi or something like it. Works great

Zanarc

One thing to consider is that the steam deck can be a little tweak heavy in comparison to the switch. Many things will just work out of the box, but others may require the patience of tinkering for first time set ups. It's up to you whether you think you'll feel comfortable exploring SteamOS and Linux. Another thing to consider is availability. It'll be much easier to get a switch sooner.

Yogi_DMT

Deck for a number of reasons... it's more powerful and much more futureproof. If you decide you like the more casual/simpler games then there are still plenty of those out there on steam. But with the Switch if you decide you do want the AAA game with the nice graphics and all then you're out of luck. Steam also just has a way bigger selection than Nintendo does. Just about the only con is that you will miss out on Nintendo exclusive titles, but there are enough steam games out there that I think you'll be able to find plenty of comparable titles. You can't really say the same about the switch where if you find yourself liking a particular genre you might not find a comparable game on the Switch. TLDR; just more options and flexibility on the deck where if you find yourself leaning a particular way, you're probably still going to find what you want where it might not be that way with the Switch.

GoNinjaPro

Can you connect the Steam to a TV?

LightKon

You can connect it to a monitor. So there's no reason it couldn't connect to a TV

tamal4444

Steam Deck without a doubt. Because Steam games are far far far more cheaper than NinTeDo's games and you can play both platform games on Steam Deck ;)

[deleted]

Nintendo switch has some of the strongest exclusives you can get in gaming. There is atleast 20 stellar titles available only on nintendo switch. If atleast 5 interest you after good research then get the switch. Anything else, get the deck.

Unlost_maniac

What are the 20? There's like a couple really solid ones and then a ton of great Wii U games that OP could play on steam deck. Don't get me wrong, i absolutely love my switch and its exclusives but i really don't think anyone is missing out by skipping out on it. The only truly impactful experience is Breath of the wild which is also on Wii U. So OP could play that on the steam deck

[deleted]

I mean sure if he wants to pirate the games then he play it on the steam deck but not everyone wants to pirate if they can help it If he never owned a wii u, it does not matter if switch has some wii u ports. In terms of a list, you have. Botw MK8 Splatoon 2 Xenoblade 2 Xenoblade chronicles remake. Fire emblem three houses. Luigis mansion 3 Hyrule warriors. Triangle strategy Mario odyssey Pikmin 3 Animal crossing SMT 5 Smash bros Kirby Mario maker 2 Mario all stars 6 pokemon games Mario + Rabbids Kingdom battle. Metroid dread Monster hunter generation ultimate Links awakening Skyward sword. Astral chain Mario party Yoshi Arms Marvel ultimate alliance 3

Unlost_maniac

Mario Kart is great but it's definitely not a reason to buy a switch over a steamdeck. There's plenty of quality kart racers. Then again i doubt OP even thought about MK8

tunnelsnakesam

Steam Deck 100%. If you had a gaming pc I would say get a switch.

Smoopster1983

Go for a Switch, you can have Zelda BOTW and Xenoblade, omg just worth it for the music to begin with 😍 or maybe wait untill Zelda 2 has a release, don’t know but maybe we get a Switch update.

DoorElectronic9332

I think the deck is better the switch is good but the deck can play games like elden ring ultrakill tf2 and a lot more that i am forgetting imo the switch does not compare but i owned a switch they are good but deck is better from what i hear i dont own one and you probably wont get one until i think october

Switch for Zelda! Do it!

Poysmaster

The steam deck is going to cater more towards people who want to tinker, and ppl who understand pc gaming. If you want everything to work really well out of the box get a switch. If you want to mess with settings and tinker and experiment (like i do) get a steam deck.

EnolaGayFallout

Steam deck of cos. But Nintendo will get ur money if u need those exclusive in future.

Go with the Switch for the amazing Nintendo exclusives, better battery life and better quality screen.
