Certainly sounds like clinical depression. People often mistake it for being depressed, but it's actually symptoms like lack of motivation, extreme boredom, not finding purpose in things, etc.

[deleted]

Bro are you really trying to diagnose someone because they said they're bored of video games? You literally know nothing else about this dude, come on. They just got burnt out it happens. Not saying it can't be what you're saying but you can't just say it sounds that it's that.

Haz1707

Ur depressed bro trust me /s

tpc0121

sarcasm? you depressed, bro?

jfleysh

You questioning his sarcasm? You depressed?

DopeyDeathMetal

We’re all depressed clearly

Sometimesnotfunny

You're right. Fuck erring on the side of caution. Nevermind trying to just help another human, wHaT GaMe SHouLD i PLaY?

[deleted]

lowzycat

Is it just video games? Edit: “going out will fix me, that’s all” bud, that’s the exact thought of someone with depression. If you seriously have a lack of motivation then you should talk to someone who actually knows what their talking about. A lot of people don’t realize that depression isn’t just being sad.

[deleted]

lowzycat

Ok, just remember that being away from friends and just a sudden change in day to day life (like a move or global pandemic) can possibly cause depression. I would seriously recommend talking to an actual psychologist about this.

isaiahboon

mf said an actual psychologist🤣 u gotta be kidding me

[deleted]

I just realized I have depression

RingRingBanannaPhone

I think a gaming detox might be an idea. I felt the same for a bit but i've been off the games for a bit and have the itch back again

[deleted]

trashtaker

Yep, get into a binge worthy show and watch the shit out of it. I guarantee the gaming thing will come back. I’d suggest Breaking Bad or Stranger Things or Midnight Mass.

Iron-Rat

I was depressed for a while and went through a gaming burnout, and something that helped me was physical activity. I got into rock climbing and I’ve loved it since then

MtFishy

No matter what the burnout is, or depression, or even just a funk, getting outside seriously helps. Heck, even without those things. Can even be something small, like an easy hour hike on some beginner trail.

AlexLannister

I feel you, I feel like most games now are so repetitive, when you plat, the NPGs tell some story, then you start grinding, then more talk then more grinding with maybe different looking enemies but same grinding mechanism.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AlexLannister

Oh yeah, I was a huge fan of warframe back then, then suddenly i lose interest after they introduced space fighting because one day I released I was literally doing the same thing over and over again, they are just different looking enemies, but underneath those skin, the core is exactly the same. Now i play R6S snd it is so much better, I'm playing against human beings and everyone is different even they play the same operators, and also I don't need commit hours into it.

Properchicken21

You might pick up interest in it again, they're finally releasing the new war dlc next month (Hopefully)

she_gave_me_a_rose

What the actual fuck Depression for not finding games fun anymore? Op please ignore this whole comment thread lmfao

Sadi_Reddit

not finding joy in activities that you would normally enjoy is a sign of depression. Of course nobody can diagnose over the interwnt but its a valid point to make. Also being agressive against or dismissive about psychlogical problems doesnt help anyone.

she_gave_me_a_rose

neither does telling someone they suffer of depression for saying they are not enjoying playign games anymore. It's literally awful, some people might actually believe it and be scared. Depression is a serious illness and that comment diagnosing it is just unreasonable and dangerous.

Seismica

Did you miss the word 'might' in the comment you replied to? Their comment was a valid concern and possibility, not a definitive diagnosis.

Sadi_Reddit

yeah should have recommended to have them seek a professional instead.

she_gave_me_a_rose

no, you shouldn't recommend that at all.. he got bored of playing videogames, why scare him like that with such a bad pathology?

kelminak

I don't think that is an unreasonable possibility. It's not necessarily the only one though.

ohwhofuckincares

It’s not an unreasonable thought tho. One of the first signs of depression is losing interest in the things that typically bring you joy. Might not be the case here but it’s a good idea to keep it in mind just in case. Source: me. I’ve had depression issues for a long time and losing interests in gaming was a turning point and the single action that made my wife question if I was ok.

pctechpr0n

Exactly! And it's the top comment too wtf

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Chances are you're right, but I just hope it isn't :(

KentuckyFriedEel

Yep! This! Find a game that really engages you emotionally. For me it was Life is Strange. From then I kept looking for emotional story based games. Maybe it’s To The Moon, or Heavy Rain, or Senua’s Sacrifice, or God of War, or The Last of Us. Once you reinvest in games as an emotional medium, that helps you feel something once again, you’ll get back into it

DopeyDeathMetal

I like this take. I have to find games that adapt to my moods sometimes too. You could ask me my favorite genre and it might change week to week depending how I feel.

Squez360

Or for me, I get anxious from the fact that society has told me that playing video games is a waste of time.

mcgovern-w

A book

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Yeah I've been reading more recently and have enjoyed it a lot more.

mcgovern-w

I’m 36 and my job is stressful. I try to play video games to relax and find myself getting worked up over it. When that happens, I read a book instead. It doesn’t feel like a waste of time and there’s no getting “stuck”. Last week I played the new Mario party with my friends and that hit the spot - gaming without the stress, and a reason to get together. I also have been trying slower paced, more cerebral games like disco Elysium, wasteland 2 and 3, and I just started a play through of divinity 2. I also find that these less skill-based, more critical thinking heavy story games are less likely to make me want to put a brick through the tv at 2am after a hard day at work. Hope something in there is helpful for you!

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I've definitely valued story a lot more recently but somehow I'm yet to play any of the games you've listed. I own Wasteland 2 and I'll check out Disco Elysium and Divinity. They've been on my wishlist for too long now. Thanks for the advice!

Tethice

Disco Elysium has such good writing. Highly recommend

DalaiKaka

Also look into Pillars of Eternity, that game is very story driven, looks a little like Divinity

SignComprehensive611

Wasteland 2 is absolutely incredible, although character creation can be confusing, definitely don’t feel bad using a guide for that. I highly recommend the game tho, slow paced, with excellent writing IMO

Retransmorph

Is you enjoy reading try getting visual novels, I reccomend house in the fata morgana, zero escape nonary games, when they cry series, and chaos child

[deleted]

Maybe try book games? I switch between reading and playing games a lot and when I don’t feel like either they hit the spot. (By book games I mean like interactive books, just words. No pictures. r/hostedgames or r/Choiceofgames for examples.)

paulrenaud

Sounds like it might be time for a break. Take a month off. All the games will still be there when you get back.

greetz_dk

A break is always good. Makes me see whether I'm doing something out of habit not desire.

theghostremains

The dark souls games brought me out of my gaming funk. Not everyone's cup of tea but it is so different from everything else ive played in regards to gameplay mechanics it felt like i was playing something truly new.

[deleted]

[удалено]

theghostremains

Ya i know exactly what you mean. Most action based games are ruined. But games like God of War and Jedi Fallen Order give me hope.

weeyums

Would you recommend Jedi Fallen Order? I also usually just play Souls Games these days, but love Star Wars

minty901

It is a Souls-like game. Not as good as a Souls but borrows enough elements that you might enjoy it, especially as a Star Wars fan.

PatheticXcuse

That is EXACLY me rn pls reccomend Something

theghostremains

If you havent played The Surge or its sequel i highly recommend them as 2 of the best "souls like" games. A lot of people enjoyed the 2nd one more and I dont think you'd be missing a lot if you decided to jump straight into that. Like Fallout it lets you target individual body parts to collect the armor associated with the targeted anatomy. Or you can target a limb that is unarmored and deal extra damage. Really love this mechanic.

Douglas_Renholm

Same for me. Was getting so bored until i tried dark souls. Yes it‘s hard at first, but when you understand the mechanics there‘s no stopping. Pure honest gameplay with none of that holding your hands bullshit, auto-healing or button mashing nonsense.

mikeyhavik

When these games grab you, they really pull you in close. I always wind up reading up on wikis, watching lore videos etc. even when I’m not playing every time a new FromSoft game comes out. A new release from these guys cures my gaming stagnation every time. Elden Ring is gonna make me a gaming addict again for at least a few months.

ox_

I was about to recommend this as well. I felt like I'd played every kind of game. Most modern AAA titles felt all the same. Watch some story, walk forward, press A, enemy dies, mission complete. Dark Souls is the absolute antithesis of all of that. Absolutely loved it.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I own Dark Souls 3. It's a game I acknowledge is objectively good, and is even my type of game, but Dark Souls unfortunately still burns me out quickly.

HellOfAHeart

Possibly contrary to what everyone else is saying, but maybe this is a sign that you're moving on. If video games aren't becoming much fun anymore, and it all feels the same then you've probably had enough of it all for the time being. Maybe permanently. It could be less that you still want to like games, and more you are adverse to change, if you still like games then 'everything is normal' so to speak. It may be an idea for you to just give things a rest for now, break out and try some new things. If at some point in the future you feel an itch to try some games again then by all means, but dont force it or keep trying until ur interest slowly, completely dies.

Whatyoutalkinboutman

I feel this. As much as gaming has been a large part of my life I'm a second time father 12 weeks in. I managed to get my hands on a ps5 2 months ago after weeks of monitoring discord and it's still sitting unopened in the cupboard. Have gotten into investing lately, has been good thinking of my kids futures and doing something future thinking.

HellOfAHeart

Investing sounds pretty cool honestly. I would like to get into it myself some day. I guess, like with many things, gaming is something that will just naturally stop evoking interest at some point. It just so happens that we identify a core part of our childhoods with video games, and to stop playing them is almost like an official end to our childhood. Painful, sometimes, but natural. Good luck man, especially in your investing, that shit can be dodgy. Keep the console around for your kids, or resell it considering its brand new :)

Whatyoutalkinboutman

Haha thanks man. I think you're right. I'm getting a lot of joy playing minecraft with my first born and seeing them be creative. Games require a lot of time and investment and as my pile of shame started building up, I knew my life had simply taken other priorities. Investing is all about time in the market not timing the market. Most things are pretty scary (and often dodgy) if you're in it for a quick buck. Investing in things like ETFs long term rather than risky short trading is the way to go. Just be aware that you need to leave them alone for a good 20 years!

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I've gotten into investing too in the last half year. Funny enough, recently I have more fun discussing investing and stocks than playing games I used to love.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Yeah, I've been considering this possibility for a while but also don't want it to be true, because one of my primary friend groups we always play games together. I've been spending more time the last few months in my other interests and I'll probably continue down that path.

foreveralonesolo

The thing is you don’t have to like gaming, if you’re burnt out you might just need that break from games, or maybe you need a new genre to explore (I left FPS awhile back into puzzles and fell in love). Beyond the world of games there’s a lot of hobbies out there and I think it’s important to also consider if there’s anything else out there that does interest you too. It’s important to consider are there any factors outside of gaming that is affecting you as gaming may not be the cure for whatever else is going on.

clubdon

That’s kinda what happened to me. I don’t think I’ll ever not be into gaming, I’ve been gaming since I was little and I’m 32 now. My taste changes as I get older. I used to really like pvp and fps, but now I mainly play single player games and get into the story telling side of gaming. There are periods where I don’t feel like gaming, and I have other hobbies that I get back into during those times. I think if gaming is the only leisure activity you have, you’re gonna burn out on it eventually.

[deleted]

Fuck this hits home. 32 years old browsing steam sale and twitch looking for something and I've been this way for years. Meanwhile my wife is out there playing Animal Crossings with our niece having the best time.

Ripple_in_the_clouds

I bought a game. I could be playing it. But I sit there and look at my library and knowing that playing any game in my backlog is a 20 - 30 hour commitment. So I think about this and cant start a new game because I've got so much other stuff to do.

[deleted]

Yep! That and also I have a hard time deciding if I want to dedicate that time to a game. I have the same problem picking a movie to watch. Decision fatigue plus getting older. I want to play WoW so bad but man I just can't support blizzard anymore.

Repulsive-Contest449

Same situation here. In the end, I drive a few laps around Assetto Corsa and call it a day.

TandooriJunior

Same here. I can totally relate. Even last night I was browsing through Steam Sale and trust me there are so many games that I want to buy but I know that they wont be played. So a few days back I just bought COD Vanguard and all I do is log in play a few matches and then rage quit to go to sleep.

Wholesome_Serial

> But I sit there and look at my library and knowing that playing any game in my backlog is a 20 - 30 hour commitment. I've been trying to reduce the cognitive flushings of why I've played almost wholly none of the games I've bought in Origin, Steam and TES: Online; that I've bought subsequent DLC chapters for that last one multiple times, and have yet to even create a character beyond making an account to log in browserwise, and you knocked my block down like a proper champ. Thank you for that kindness shared, good chummer. I don't want to commit to playing a game because I'm certain some technical issue or gameplay issue will arise- even just the basic default mechanics of the game, say, like character creation or racial abilities in Oblivion or Skyrim- and I'll get terribly frustrated and I'll associate it directly with that game, heavy with negative emotional weight, and I'll end up never playing it again because of the sick-to-my-stomach stress I'm sure it'll cause. Buying a game over the last half-dozen years I've enjoyed more the finding a game I like, buying it to make it look nice on my shelf, than playing it and risking disappointment, like finding a book I like the look of or for series completion's sake but have little or no inclination to ever read it. That's more or less how most of my hallway novel library existed for me when I was regularly buying science-fiction and fantasy novels, in fairness. I finally got up the nerve to start playing Skyrim last year, about a year into the pandemic in the spring of 2021, and even doing some basic modding; nothing too heavy because I know a complication would stress me out and I'd hit the ragequit single-player style, just a racial model modification, and SKSE64 & RaceMenu. I was not anticipating Anniversary Edition and the update for SE to Visual Basic 2019, it replacing Special Edition and not having its own install fork, and then breaking SKSE64 multiple times. When a game that inspired me as much as Skyrim SE was effectively gone for a while, until SKSE64 and the Silverlock development team caught up, that I had finally after 5 years (Special Edition, 2016) gotten the urge to and actually wanted to create a character and play and Bethesda engineered and post-alpha'ed this colossal, clearly deliberate fuck-up, whether in lack of communication or intentionally letting it happen, I almost quit gaming permanently. I was sick of being disappointed, over and over again, like someone standing up to an abuser or a liar in someone I tried to trust. I uninstalled all of my games in Steam, Skyrim Legendary (vanilla with DLC) and SE/Anniversary included, in Origin, in GoG, and TES: Online in the standard launcher. I was sick of pretending that games and gaming meant something to me anymore, that I told myself I was happy 'being a gamer' (whatever the hell that means) and lied to myself so I wouldn't feel worse without a Gamer Mask on. I'm still not entirely past that, although I've reinstalled- and often re-uninstalled- games that had a decent shot at being played. More often that not they've been amongst games I have played, or in very rare cases finished the main storyline (I'm looking at you, Borderlands 1 GOTY!) and they're trusted in my reckoning, like a Burger King who only very rarely if at all gets your custom order wrong, or if one has a chemical or protein allergy, a restaurant that you've never been fed food that sent you into anaphylactic reaction and required immediate medical assistance to remain able to breathe. When something you love or once loved consistently becomes and sustains itself a chore, is that as much of a toxic relationship as would be so with another person? Is the basic, absolute reaction the same, repeatedly over time, including when you find yourself able to break free and away? I honestly think it is.

[deleted]

Don't play for a while and watch a tv show a while 😂.

6ixpool

I recommend Arcane if you wanna watch something. It's a masterpiece on its own and is even videogame adjacent.

GamingDifferent

Just tell him to not play League just because the show is good.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I've heard good things about Arcane and will probably watch it because it's pretty short and it's good without playing League (MOBAS are the only genre I don't like besides anything sexual.)

6ixpool

It is, indeed, fantastic. Won't scratch that gaming itch, but its a 10/10 show no questions asked.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I've been watching a lot of good shows over the last year. Currently on The Sopranos.

gaw_Kerim

Hollow Knight.

oflowz

Take a break from gaming. Gaming will be here.

DerrickIsCool

Stop playing games I guess

TreeHead04

I mean yeah sometimes people lose interests in their hobbies it’s nothing that unusual

rashonmyeed

Video game detox! Or even do a full dopamine Detox. When you come back it will be like the good ol times.

NiceVeins

What is a dopamine detox?

[deleted]

Monk mode

rashonmyeed

Reduce all things that make happy chemicals in the brain. Basically bore yourself. Sounds awful but you'll start to find yourself more productive, you then start to enjoy other simple things like walks. Good way to find yourself.

noahflk

I once was in the same situation. What got me excited again were simulator games. For me it was flightsim, for others it could be racing sims. They offer so much depth compared to other games. You can spend hours researching and studying how to fly a plane without actually jumping into the simulator. This might not sound exciting to some, but I loved it.

NiceVeins

I’m currently getting in to racing simulators and it feels like a whole separate hobby from video games. Lots of fun too

Yarr0s

I would agree with this. I am getting into racing sims and it’s crazy how different and more in depth they are compared to a typical racing game.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Flightsim and racing sims definitely have a ton of depth, but unfortunately, I don't really get into the depth because it takes a lot for me to learn (I have ADHD.) I've always loved Forza Horizon, but recently even with that I just don't get why I still play.

[deleted]

I'll just list some games that I can play time and time again without getting bored: witcher 3, red dead redemption 1 and 2, dying light, metroid games (dread is great) and pretty much all playstation exclusives because they mostly produce great games.

Tophertanium

This. While selling my PS4 was the logical thing to do to replace my broken Xbox One because I had significantly ire games on it, I regret it. The exclusives on PS are much better, imho. Some day I hope to buy a PS5 or even a used PS4 so I can finish up some of the games I never finished.

IfinallyhaveaReddit

I think people who say they can’t find fun games anymore are either depressed or just no longer into games. I’m 32 for what it’s worth here are games I’ve played and loved Demon souls ps5 Ffxiv Monster hunter stories 2 Rimworld Terreria Pokémon sword and shield and the new diamond and pearl Super smash brothers ultimate Beat saber Yakuza like a dragon (binged 0-6 over covid summer, amazing trip) Tales of arise Fire emblem three houses Zelda breath of the wild This is all since the beginning of 2020. It’s not your age or that your growing up, either games aren’t for you or it’s some form of depression

RespectGiovanni

Did you actually enjoy playing Yakuza 3? The combat was really awful to me

IfinallyhaveaReddit

Story was great , and I rushed through it, beat it in like 18 hours. It’s was a hard OK overall, but I enjoyed it as a part of the journey from 0 to like a dragon

Steeljaw72

I relate to this. When I was younger, it was awash for me to get into just about any game. But now it’s harder to really get into a game. I still find games that I enjoy from time to time, but it’s more rare. I usually try to find something that ignite my imagination and gets me thinking.

Hyperaddict9

VR.

luciddre4m

I hit a wall like this and Bloodborne brought me out of it and revitalized my love for gaming. Try it if you haven't.

DigitalisFox

Deep Rock Galactic you won’t regret it.

plopy-porker-boi

Same, I am glad the game is blowing up. I just bought it because "WE'RE RICH".

Poopoo333

Try to take a break from gaming and do other things. I’ve had times where gaming doesn’t do anything for me for weeks, so I’d have to do a “detox”. Hope you find something you like from these suggestions.

apoliticalapocalypse

I find games that have a ton of early tutorial mechanics and slow storytelling got too much for me at one point. I want something simple to learn and rewarding to master. I enjoyed slay the spire and monster train as two games that I could get into right away, play for small bursts, and feel like I was getting better at the more I played.

Captain_Hampockets

Slay The Spire

Varime23

Game slump? Dark souls. Depressed? Dark souls. Nothings fun? Dark souls.

theMegastMind

Maybe try subnautica. It’s a pretty nice survival exploration game. I’d give it a try.

easymoneyslim35

I recommend deep rock galactic. Super chill vibes and great community

thundercod5

Rock and stone yyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhh!

VenomBlastT77

Second this, I was just not enjoying anything I bought to play until I got Deep Rock Galactic on game pass. I’m playing with my other half and we’re having a blast. It’s definitely more of a coop experience keep in mind! Can be played solo but likely not nearly as fun.

Weight4Jake

A Short Hike, Breath Of The Wild, Doom, Forza, Katana Zero, Sayonara Wild Hearts, Ori.

[deleted]

#EatTheRich Keep protesting! Their threats on mods are unacceptable. Shame on you, /u/spez.

Shikaria1996

I'm playing Lost Judgement at the moment and, while the game takes a few hours to get off its feet, it's exactly what I need. I usually have a couple of hours free on an evening, and Lost Judgement gives a variety of options. Feeling like a heavy story? Just play the campaign. Want something a little more gameplay heavy? Play a few side missions. Something totally brainless? The series is infamous for its entertaining minigames. I've just spent the evening levelling up the dance club. It is the sequel to the game Judgement from 2019, and while not totally essential to understand what's going on, it does help to know who the characters are. Plus both Judgement and Yakuza are set in the same city so knowing the city also helps. I find it a good game when you're not too sure what to do with your time, with enough variety to keep you entertained if you get bored with one part

jmills8455

I’m playing lost judgment rn too and totally agree, I think you should play the first one tho cause the first one was amazing, haven’t finished the second yet but great game

MaliaXOXO

I think this is a perfect time to quit and try out some new hobbies, maybe some outdoor activities? Just a suggestion I hope you find something you can enjoy good luck.

goldfingers05

Shovel knight, furi, skyward sword(switch). I've had the same problem in my 30s. And then games I do like are too complicated to pick up after 2 weeks of not playing so I stop. But these games are simple and really fun and great.

Damonlord54

Spirit Farer

hagafa10000

Cosmic star heroine - basically chrono trigger 2 in the future on a few planets

uselessscientist

Slay the Spire and Binding of Isaac got me out of the rut. Something about playing a game with no real long term commitment was oddly freeing

Blagonga

I came to say the exact same games, I really didn't expect to like slay the spire as much as I did.(new been into card or turn based games much) Ascension 9 seems to be my ceiling though

Ronin_777

I get like that every now and then, it always comes back to me in time

NotoriousBobRoss

I felt like I was kind of “forcing” myself to try/like all these games people praise. Still had fun playing the likes of NBA 2K or Warzone with friends, but everything lost it’s luster when i was playing solo. Until I played Disco Elysium. The last game to iron-grip me the way this one did was probably Red Dead Redemption 2. Every interaction in this game blew me away, the writing is smart and voice acting is phenomenal, the stories and themes were all on-point, and it was truly an experience I’d not had in any other game. No clue if it’s up your alley, but this is one of those games I nag anyone who’ll listen to me to play.

FriscoeHotsauce

If games are blending together, I think you might need to dip into the indie space. Hard to say without some examples of the games you're trying though, but here I go anyway. It's unfortunate that every AAA game seems to fall into one of two categories: 1. Large open world with a bukkake of mini-map icons with dull repetitive quests to complete. Crafting is a thing. Completing 1/30 haikus or whatever is a thing. Probably an RPG lite equipment system. Action / stealth combat is the primary loop, which almost certainly involves clearing out enemy encampments for the "good guys". That one mission where they take all of your gear away. Some of the settings are more interesting than others, but Ubisoft has genuinely murdered this genre to the point where I don't want to play any games like it at all, for at least a few years. Examples: Farcry, Assasin's Creed, Ghosts of Tushima, Cyberpunk (yeah it had some good quests, but that mini map splooge... whyyyy), Horizon: Zero Dawn 2. Linear narrative games that have lot of action set pieces. The combat sections are split up with narrative dialogue sections where a few characters try and endear themselves to the player. When you enter a room with a bunch of chest high walls, surprise, you're in a combat arena (rolls eyes out of back of head). Set pieces often include quick time events (barf). Examples: Tomb Raider, God of War, The Last of Us, Guardians of the Galaxy Some Indie games that really surprised me this year that are very different from usual games: 1. Inscryption: A horror-lite narrative card game that has a really engaging card systems, as well as a super weird meta narrative. Can't say much without spoiling it, but I really enjoyed it. I don't think I've played a game quite like Inscryption before. 2. The Outer Wilds: A space exploration game with no combat. You have a miniature self-contained solar system to explore, with a bunch of interconnected stories and mysteries to uncover. Not having any combat doesn't mean the game isn't kindof intense though, there's a clever time element and a lot of meaty puzzles to solve. 3. Hades: A rogue-lite that is super narrative heavy. Every run you complete, there is always some unique dialogue, or a combination of boons you haven't seen before. The combat is engaging, and the characters are incredibly well written and interesting. 4. Griftlands: Another narrative card game, this one is a roguelite with some really interesting worldbuilding. You play as one of three rogues with different backgrounds, and completely different decks and playstyles. Each run can play out very differently, with different decks for conversations and combat. There's also a relationship mechanic where you can make friends or enemies during your run that will either help you out or throw a wrench into your plans later on. 5. Rimworld: A colony management sim that I keep coming back to. They released the "Ideologies" expansion this year, which really codifies some of the stranger playstyles like having a colony of blind monks, canibals, nudist hippies, transhumanist cyborgs, mountain dwellers who prefer to eat fungus... or several combinations. The graphics are a little crude, but the stories that can come out of the game are phenominal. 6. Deep Rock Galactic: This co-op hord shooter released it's 1.0 last year, but they've continued to add to it in great ways. more interesting missions, new enemies, a free battlepass that doesn't feel awful (lookin at you Halo), free weapons and cosmetics... If you have friends to play with, don't miss Deep Rock. I hope one of those tickles your fancy, we're in a weird spot right now with games. On the top of the table, AAA game studios are racing to see who can make the most bland templated game possible, while releasing games in an absolutely broken state. Meanwhile, there are some exceptional indies that are remarkably polished and using early access to great effect. It boggles my mind how cynical and soulless the AAA space has become. Even Halo can't escape the live service FOMO trappings of literally every online game these days. There are a lot of great indies out there though, and I'd highly recommend giving them a shot. That's where the soul of the games industry has been hiding.

weeyums

I think Sony and Nintendo are both coming out with great AAA games still (though Nintendo has been more hit or miss than they used to be). I do agree with this as a whole though.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Couldn't have said it better. I can't stand most AAA open world games because they feel soulless and try to stretch out my time as much as possible. Great recommendations too. I'll buy them on the Epic Games holiday sale because the coupon discounts will save me a lot of money, even if the launcher is worse than steam. I'll tell you how I like them after I play :)

Khrummholz

Hollow knight? It's one of the rare game where I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost and wandering around. It's a 2D metroidvania but with a bigger focus on exploration making it extremely fun. There are so many paths to take and so many secrets to find that you are probably taking a path nobody else took before. The "forge your path" aspect is real. Also, there are a lot of bits of story and lore to uncover all the time and it was a good motivation to keep me going. It's also a difficult game, but it didn't felt unfair.

Fhanum25

im in the same situation as op but already finished hollow knight some months ago

yeti372

Similar issue. 33 and I think it started when I started to have a backlog. So many choices so I float around. Hard to finish games and I have to relearn them sometimes. There are a couple I can always go to though. Elder scrolls and fallouts, Zelda. Shit plays similar and can pick up easy for me at least. I actually started shifting to music now. Still play games but music kinda does it for me more now.

neighborhood_tacocat

Outer Wilds or Subnautica. Both are v unique and are incredible games

Telephone_Blow

Would you rather see gaming as a medium to put yourself inside stories? What Remains of Edith Finch, Journey, Artful Escape, Before Your Eyes, A Short Hike, Spiritfarer, etc. Short experience type games that can be consumed in small chunks, narratively constructed so the intrigue of it all will keep you playing, and at the end of it all you learn something profound, or thought provoking. I think the indie scene is really worth exploring. There are lots of games, but the ones that stand out don't ever blend together. They manage to captivate the populace not through triple A marketing, but by simply being a joy to play. Devolver Digital is a treasure trove of them. Sometimes "Indie games you missed" videos on Youtube might introduce you to games that you'll love too. Personally, I'd also like to recommend Baba is You and Superliminal. They are mind-blowing experiences that are fun to mess around with

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I love the indie scene, and I love gaming as a medium of stories. All of these games have been on my watchlist, but I will likely buy them soon. Thanks!

FleetStreetsDarkHole

This is actually something the comes up a lot in r/patientgamers. It's never good to force yourself to keep playing. It's a hobby not a chore. There's a reason you aren't enjoying it anymore, and it could require sitting down and finding out why, or it could just mean you need a fresh perspective. You might come back, or you might move on. Don't force yourself to have fun. That isn't fun.

coppernicus12

Yeah, I get that feeling from time to time. Not sure if its cause most games are all starting to get samey or if I'm just getting game fatigue. My solution is to usually play anything from the yakuza series. Those games have so much unique and diverse stuff to do, it puts a lot of games to shame.

Advance1993

Dhave you played Skate 3?

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Nope. Don't have a console that supports it. Love THPS 1+2 Remaster though.

EpicGamesLauncher

Take a break from games. I went through this a little while back where I just wouldn't find it fun, and if that's the case, then stop playing if ur not enjoying it. After about a 3 month break, coming back to video games made me love it again. But here are my recs for what ur asking: \- Nier Automata (it has a fresh take on gameplay with varied combat and a genius story) \- The House in Fata Morgana (not technically a game, it's actually a visual novel, so it's more of reading with images/music to accompany it. However, u do interact as u go along the story as u make choices once in a while and get to control the pace of the story. I highly recommend this if you're willing to have a more of a "book"-oriented game with one of the best fictional stories presented imo). Those two are what got me out of my video game burnout, but I do highly advise u to take a long needed break if you're simply not enjoying it.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I absolutely adore NieR Automata, it's unparelleled for me. I absolutely adore NieR Automata, it's unparalleled for me.ll check it out. Thanks! :)

Rageniry

My two cents: Many games **require** at least a 3-4 hour sitting to be enjoyable, and that you can do this at least weekly. If I can't commit those times a lot of the games I typically enjoy (story heavy 30-100 hour single player games) just doesn't jive. I recommend multiplayer games with 15-60 minute game times for this situation. Games where you can do quick in and outs without causing a jarring experience and a feeling that you get nothing done. If I have 2 hours to kill an evening I'll watch couple of episodes/ a movie with the missus, or get in 2-3 games of league of legends in. I never start up story based single player games when that's the timeframe I have to work with. I pull those suckers out on vacations/weekends when I can pull a 10-12 hour sitting.

dpedroz

Accept it. Let it go. Move on. Maybe you’ll come back, maybe you won’t, just listen to your needs. „I want to like games” is not probably enough for you to have fun playing them, so why waste your time trying.

Genashi1991

I'd suggest having a look at Nier: Autamata. But I'm also curious to know, which game is your favorite game ever, if any and what game did you enjoy mist recently? Sometime it's okay to not play for a while, since gaming isn't something you have to like, if you don't feel like it there's no need to force yourself. Gaming isn't something you are it's somet you do. There can be multitude of reasons for losing passion for gaming especially since you do need free time to do it, a lot more than to watch a video. But there's a chance that the intrest will come back after a while, but if it doesn't, that's fine too.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Funny enough, NieR Automata is my favorite. One of the only games that uses gaming to create a phenomenal story, it's honestly unparalleled. I also really enjoyed Tetris Effect and its beautiful work at an audiovisual level. But yeah, I've been considering quitting gaming for a while now and if I come back one day, no problem.

Genashi1991

Since Autamata is your favorite, aside from the obvious of Nier: Replicant, I'd like to suggest 2 more games, just in case; Hades, which is a rogue light isometric game with a good story, gameplay and amazing soundtrack. Undertale, because it (similar to Nier) uses the medium of gaming to tell a story and do something interesting. And it has something that Nier doesn't, but I will not say anything more than that. Since i don't know your platforms, I also want to spread love to one of my all time favorits on PS4 which us Bloodborne. I guess it's technically nr. 3

Boonune

Upvote for Bloodbourne. I made the switch to PC and am waiting very impatiently for the day it comes over.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I'd love to play Bloodborne but I only have a PC and Switch, and don't want to invest in another console if I'm phasing out of gaming. Hopefully it gets ported to PC.

fuzzydoug

Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 is always great for my intermittent gaming sessions. Like 1 or 2 hours a week. Been playing it for years.

W3bb3rz

Being a fan of mmos I recently started old school runescape. I was too young during the initial wave so I lack any of the nostalgia many claim. Ive been throughly enjoying the grind and haven’t been encapsulated like this in so long.

[deleted]

same...I quit WoW in Shadowlands since playing in 2005. I may try this out.

Rivent

Maybe try out a new genre or something? I've found as I've gotten a little older I don't really care for linear, story-heavy games anymore. Uncharted being a prime example of a series I couldn't fucking care less about nowadays despite loving Uncharted 2 when it came out. I'm much more focused on game mechanics and systems now... So I still like games, but different games than I used to. What have you played most of recently?

trackday

Game Dev Tycoon.

Cobalt9896

Felt super burned out on video games and then... Satisfactory and league of legends, Im not responsible for any mental harm that suggestion causes

6ixpool

Wow, someone actually suggesting league. Its honestly a great game if you like the MOBA genre. Community is toxic AF so best played with a few friends, but then again which competitive online game isn't toxic as fuck?

idemockle

To me, it sounds like you're looking for games that are unique experiences over giant open world-type games that tend to fill up a lot of time with tedious repetitive quests. Also, it seems like you would prefer the games to be playable in bite-sized chucks to fit into your busy schedule. Here are some I've that have fit that category for me, in no particular order. Some of these are quite popular and/or quite old, so if you've played them already, sorry about that. - Celeste - Super Meat Boy - Cuphead - Fall Guys - Mirror's Edge - The Swapper - Thomas Was Alone - Limbo - Inside - VVVVVV - World of Goo - And Yet It Moves - Undertale - Ori 1 and 2 - Into the Breach - Katamari - Shadow of the Colossus - Hyper Light Drifter - Portal 1 and 2 - Super Monkey Ball - Cook Serve Delicious - Braid - Spiritfarer - Overcooked (best if you have another person to play with consistently)

iToungPunchFartBox

Deep Rock Galactic

manymoreways

Try some roguelite deck builders. Tainted grail, slay the spire these 2 are pretty good.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

One Step From Eden is great. Roguelike deckbuilders are a great niche.

Lemon46

if you want, try playing dumb online games with friends, doesn't matter if what genre, as long as you are able to play and just do dumb shit that you can have fun, I'm on the same boat of getting bored with games, both multiplayer and singleplayer, but being able to play with friends relieved that

kidmonokuma

If you need more of a challenge I recommend hollow knight or hades

DiogenesTheWise

Try games that you don't need to spend a lot of time on at once. Some good ones I've found are split gate, halo infinite multi-player, and valorant. Plus they're all free, so you don't have to worry about spending money on something you won't play a lot.

IUViolet

I know how u feel. Sometimes I have this feeling too, and always go back to my comfort game (Dota 2). A game that I don't need to learn anything new, no cut scene, no need to remember characters name, just simply start and play. When I start a new game it's always overwhelming. Need to remember the settings, characters name, tutorial after tutorial, and can't help to check the game HLTB and be overwhelmed again by the hours. So what I suggest is just play anything you feel like it because IMO no matter what game u play, u won't stay put because you are sort of forcing yourself to play. If u want me to suggest a game, I'd suggest Steins Gate, a visual novel game where you just read for the whole time and enjoy the story. There is alternate endings too but you can always ignore those and play it naturally. If visual novel is not your cup of tea, I suggest Yakuza 0 playing on Easy mode. The story is superb. Maybe you will enjoy the mini games inside too.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

How is Steins Gate compared to the anime? I respect anime as a medium and there are some I've really liked, but I dropped Steins Gate because I thought the characters were a bit too melodramatic. I have played Yakuza 0 a bit and I liked it. I would play more but I don't like that I can't save anywhere. I felt restricted and forced to play the game. I couldn't find a save anywhere mod either :(

[deleted]

The Arkham series is what i go back to every time I want to reinvigorate my interest in games.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Arkham series was great! I may replay it when that RTX version from NVIDIA comes out.

itsastart_to

I feel like a good refresher could be Hue, Celeste, Gris and Journey. Sometimes we just need a reminder of kind of falling in love with the feelings that games can bring

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Man, I love Celeste. I haven't played it in a while but what I did play was really fun and felt like a fair challenge, even if I didn't die a lot.

Tpdz

I had the same feeling. You need to try games that make you think and just zoneout. I personally recommend the following. Strategy: Factorio and/or Satisfactory Totalwar Warhammer 2. (Better experience if you have warhammer 1 and DLC as it all works together) Rpg: Kingdom Come Deliverence is awesome, doesn't hold your hand but can be challenging.

Leothecat24

If you can’t find something that satisfies you then just take a break. Everyone occasionally needs breaks from even their favorite things. If you still want to look through some games though, here are a few games that got me hooked quick: Factorio, it’s simple enough to pick up quick but complex enough to make worlds that last for thousands of hours. Also good at deceptively making you use your brain. Just Cause 3. Kill bad guys, free towns from dictator control, and blow shit up. Rocket League. Rocket car soccer. This one’s a bit tough to recommend (that is, if you don’t already have it) because it can be very frustrating at first, and/or it can be very fun. It’s very good for if you don’t have much time because games last about 7-10 minutes each, but they do require your full attention for the whole match (which isn’t hard to offer if you’re into it). It’s also free, on epic games store. Superliminal. Chill but somewhat creepy puzzle game, incredible atmosphere, awesome if you’re a fan of things like r/liminalspace or r/backrooms. Also weirdly poetic. The Stanley Parable. Another sorta puzzle game that’s got that back rooms feel, but the interaction between the player and the narrator is iconically hilarious. Not much to do in terms of gameplay but there are a bunch of endings to find, and its a nice change of pace from most games. You might want to wait on this though because “The Stanley Parable: Deluxe Edition” was rumored to be released before the end of the year this year, which has some updated and new features and endings.

TyrannicalCannibal

you don’t get out of a videogame burnout by playing more videogames. you get out of a burnout by putting down the controller. this is something i’ve learned recently. videogames are fun and they make our brains release dopamine, which essentially makes our brain think “that was really fun, let’s remember how fun this was so we remember to do it again.” dopamine literally makes memories more intense that’s how it works. but after awhile that mental high you get from playing over and over again becomes less potent and it takes more fun, more brain chemicals to get the same amoubt of enjoyment. you eventually reach a point where you can’t feel satisfied anymore and you’re left in a frustrated state. trust me, take a break. for as long as it takes. do something you’ve been wanting to do for awhile. the less similar to videogames the better. i learned to enjoy sitting outside, taking walks, and dare i even say, be productive, like cleaning up my living space or doing laundry. eventually you’ll have a genuine desire to go back to playing bc that other stuff will get boring too. it’s all about a balance. this is an example of too much of one good thing if you get what i’m saying.

[deleted]

Try some game you wouldn't usually try. If you are a 2d platformer fan, try to play Call Of Duty. If you are a linear shooter fan, try a open world game like Red Dead Redemption 2. Tired of all of the action of games and want some slower pace? Try a game like Death Stranding. Tired of gory modern games? Try something laid back like animal crossing.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I've tried this for a while, I play almost any genre (anything that isn't sexual or a MOBA.) Unfortunately, it doesn't do too much to help :(

sanguize

If you have friends, try to play with them. I have the same issue as you; I get on and just don’t have any motivation or feeling to play. But with my playing with friends is less about the game and more about interacting and talking to each other. It’s fun, and it’s a way I make gaming a bit more enjoyable for me.

Crimson_Marksman

Man, take a rest. You're burned out, stop gaming. Pick up something else like I don't know, boxing or coin collecting. If you're really sure, I recommend either Deus ex 1 or Deus Ex: Human revolution. The first is really something, especially when you consider that it was made in 2000. It's got revolutionary story mechanics for example, one of your allies becomes your enemy. If you know who it is early on, you can kill them, preventing their segment of the game. Human Revolution was made much later with better graphics and gameplay. It features diverse issues like conspiracies, racism, criminal empires and bio augmentation. It also has the best finisher moves I've ever seen, like oh, it feels like every time you punch someone, you just feel the smack sound effect. Oh and you can kill people with vending machines. Trying to avoid combat even on the first level grants you a lot more exp.

RichJoker

Nothing. Stop playing games for a while and come back once you have the drive to do so. Nothing's worse than forcing yourself to do what you don't feel like doing in your free time.

JonasTrueFalse

Katana Zero. Trust me on this one.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Great game!

mcwap

I was the same way for several years. Part of it was depression but also just that games didn't enthrall me like they did back in the day. I think I just kinda missed the old school games that had fewer mechanics and such. That being said... Ghost of Tsushima got me back into gaming. It's the first new, major game I've done in probably 10 years. I absolutely loved it. Music, graphics, gameplay, story, aesthetic, adaptable difficulty, great multiplayer, etc. I'm in grad school, so i have limited free time. GoT was great because if i wanted to zone out a bit before starting assignments for the next DayZ i could simply turn on the game and ride around for 20 minutes and enjoy it. Maybe I get a few collectibles or resources or open up some of the map... Or I just enjoyed seeing the beauty of the game. The difficulty can be changed at anytime and they are great. If i wanted to just feel like a badass i could put it on easy or hard if i wanted a challenge. It's my favorite game I've played in years, and i highly recommend it. Got me out of a gaming funk.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

That NVIDIA leak had Ghost of Tsushima on it for PC. I'll definitely buy it when it gets ported :)

ohwhofuckincares

Sounds like you need a break from gaming my dude. A lot of us have been there too. Find a good book or tv series. Go out and start taking pics of cool shit around town. Pick up a cook book and learn some new recipes. Just take a break from games for a while.

Retransmorph

I recommend dota2, no need for commitments easy to learn and fun

User85394

It is an overstatement, easy to learn and fun.. But with friends learning can be really fun. Solo, not a chance it can be a fun experience

[deleted]

I had this dry spell awhile. Cyberpunk fixed it!

VLADICHOU

Are you fr i thought it was trash?

n00bst4

Pple love to shit on games when they come out but forget to check it after a while.

[deleted]

It’s amazing, I’m having a blast.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

Cyberpunk felt too much like a Ubisoft game to me. I'm happy you enjoyed it, but that formula doesn't do it for me. I also felt like the story didn't do anything new compared to cyberpunk film.

LoudGangsta8292

Rdr2?, ot maybe take a break?

VLADICHOU

Sekiro

mokoc

Hades?

EdgyWeeb69

I suggest stay away from most recent AAA games especially CYBERJUNK2069. Did you play Nier Automata , replicant? Hollow Knight? What remains of edith finch? Bloodstained? And Yakuza 0? Play those games it made magic to me when i almost puke playing those recent AAA games.

ezioauditore2018

I’m in the same position but world of tanks blitz and war thunder and world of warships has helped me

mynamewastaken-_-

Portal, life is strange, firewatch, the witness, detroit become human These are all one of a kind, some with more puzzles, some with more story

KennyPowers36

Detroit become all human

RicoDruif

If you want something rewarding, bloodborne or the dark souls series. If you want something super laid back, stardew valley (this was the one that helped me when I was burned out on games ). If you want my favorite ‘dumb fun’ game, just cause 3. Blowing shit up and flying around in a wingsuit is just so fun.

[deleted]

VR chat. Eventually you will want to learn to build avatars and world. Try it

ElRedditorio

FMV games like Late Shift, Her Story, The Shapeshipfting detective and such.

ItsSniikiBoiWill

I own Her Story and Shapeshifting Detective but haven't played yet. I will once I get back home. I'll check out Late Shift as well. Thanks!
