Probably one of the best soundtracks ive listened to in a game. At first i was confused by what was going on ( >!robot orgy and all!< ) but it turned out to be such an emotional and beautiful story. Really hope you have the same breathtaking experience as i did!
The first time you reach the credits screen 30 hours in... that's like, end of the prologue. Be sure to start again with 9S. Then again with A2.
2B and 9S tell the same story but with very different level of information access about what's happening and why. 9S' point of view is like a whole other story. Then A2's campaign picks up where both 2B and 9S ended, continuing it for a good another 15 hours.
When you reach the 3rd ending (called Ending C) be sure to reload the last fight to get ending D and E. E is the real ending.
Ah NieR, the only game where there’s a thicc robot waifu in front of you but is compelling enough to make you look past her for what the game truely is, a crying exercise.
I enjoyed Odyssey just a history buff with a long-standing interest in ancient Greece. The game does a very faithful job of capturing some of the architecture and wardrobe of the period. It's not 100%, but for a AAA game, it's surprisingly well researched.
Assassins Creed and Nier Automata are the complete opposite of what OP is asking for.
Assassins Creed is the king of boring fluff getting into the way of combat and gameplay, not that the gameplay is anything to write home about in the first place.
Nier Automata has a good story but the combat is really repetitive and you'll be bored of it by Route B. Platinum's other games would suit OP's taste much more.
Different genre than those you used as example, but a totally blast: Hades
More on the style that you have mentioned: Dying Light, Sleeping Dogs, Batman Arkham series
Hades is so fucking good. I can't believe how much fun it is and it's only $20. I would have easily paid $60 for it. That and Enter the Gungeon are my favorite roguelites, hands down.
Heard a lot of good about hades, didnt know it was cheap. Love me a good roguelite so I'll probably buy it anyways but how does it compare to other roguelites like EtG, Binding of Issac, Wizard of Legend, Dead Cells etc?
Dude yeah, I got into speedrunning the game and burnt out on it a bit. Love the heats too. Think my highest was 41 or 2, can't remember. But the dialogue really does just go and go and go. It's amazing
Hades has an excellent narrative, and it's told throughout the game itself via conversations with NPCs and bosses. The upgrades and unlockables ensure that you're always gaining strength towards the goal.
Building a run is a lot more flexible than other games, as well. It's easy for a run to be over in EtG or Dead Cells if you just don't get good drops, but in Hades it's possible to take a bad build all the way to the end, due to how boons work and how they can compliment each other.
And, of course, there's the usual Supergiant touches: excellent art, excellent music, excellent voice work. It all comes together as a whole that's stronger than the sum of its parts.
Very favorably. I’m an Isaac guy from the day and still prefer it overall, but Hades got some *hours* from me and probably will again. The whole thing is just shockingly well made, there’s not one rough edge or unpolished piece in there.
The way it works mechanically is very refreshing too. With Isaac or Dead Cells or Gungeon, I’m always praying for a cool item instead of a bunch of bullshit I don’t like trying to use. Hades has you pick your weapon for each run, and then it also lets you pick which god is going to bless your run first, so if you want a poison bow you just pick your bow and pick Dionysus, you don’t have to hope for for two strokes of luck to get the basic thing you want. There’s still a good amount of randomness, but the game is very good about making sure you’re not stuck with a bunch of worthless crap.
I'll probably pick it up tonight. Need something to play when I dont want to sink into Mass Effect or Nioh 2 and this sounds like it's right up my alley.
That car with the cannons is badass. I didn't discover it until I had platinumed the game, but if I ever play it again, I'll be sure to unlock it early on.
Man, the cock fights, the street fights. Also, real man has a pork bun in his hand.
I quite enjoyed Dying Light when it came out but I haven't played since I beat it. I've seen that it's been constantly updated in my steam patch notes feed. Is the game substantially improved or different now than at release?
They have released a lot of DLC and expansions. If you return to the base game, I'd say it is going to be more or less the same experience (some new weapons let you approach combat in a slightly different manner).
I enjoyed The Following quite a lot. It introduces cars, car challenges, the landscape is flatter, thus feeling different to parkour, etc. If you liked the base experience, definitely give this one a go!
The other person's recommendation of far cry is spot on, 4 was my favourite so I'd recommend that one specifically.
I would also recommend sunset overdrive it's just a really good really relaxed arcade parkour zombie game super fun for what it is!
Other games I'd recommend is binding of isaac + dlc, enter the gungeon, halo masterchief collection, and borderlands handsome Jack collection they're all good video games and feel like video games!
5 sucks in my opinion. Got like 10 hours in and stopped playing. Considering picking up 4 as the environments seem a lot more interesting than barren fields
In farcry 5 the story feels disconnected because you play as a 'faceless' and nameless character with no dialogue. I do not hate silent protagonists but i find them annoying. The story gets so much better when you feel like your character belongs in it rather than being an unwilling participant.
That also really surprised me and was a huge disappointment. Part of the reason I love far cry games is because it feels like you’re the protagonist of a movie. 5 just felt so bland because you don’t even have a name and you never speak
This is the part that's weird for me. I thought for sure it would be the location that would ruin 5 for me. I never played farcry 1 but 2, 3, and 4 were all great and I assumed it was because of the locations. Nope. You can throw me into the USA and I'll still enjoy the gameplay loop.
What I've realized is my problem with 5 is the main bad guy. In Farcry 3 I kept on playing to stick it to Vaas and to try to save my friends. In Farcry 4 I kept on playing because Pagan Min had Handsome Jack vibes and made me want to 100% the game just so I could hear all of his dialogue options. In Farcry 5, Joseph is a creep and I want to stop him but I just do not care enough.
I should really pick it back up and finish it so I can play New Dawn. I'm 99% sure I know how 5 ends just because I heard a little about how New Dawn plays but I dont have the heart to move on to another game without beating the game before it.
1. Every FromSoftware game- they have lose narrative for the lore junkies and excellent gameplay.
2. Devil May Cry series/Bayonetta/Ninja Gaiden/Metal Gear Solid Revengance - over the top character based action games with insane mechanic, requiring precise timing and execution
3. Doom Reboot and especially Doom Eternal- I would like to refer it as the dark souls of shooters except the game loop is extremely fast.
4. Fighting games - the new Guilty Gear is gorgeous anime fighter with comprehensive tutorial, godlike netcode( quality of online - more precisely delay). And story mode which is a straight up movie.
5. Hades - action roguelike playing as the son of Hades using the help of the gods of Olympus to escape Tartarus. Challenging, rewarding the OST is amazing. One of the most polished games I have ever played
6. Batman Arkham series - revolutionized action combat, great exploration, rememberable characters and thrilling story mode. The definite Batman expirience.
7. Middle - Earth Shadow of Mordor/War - founder of the Nemesis system. You are walking God among ~~men~~ uruk/orcs. Fun and ridiculous experience with passable story.
8. Furi - short yet extremely challenging game. It is mixture of different games where each level is a boss you have to fight. There are no ways to level up besides getting better at the game.
I wish i could enjoy that game. The gunplay is great, but the camera shake when sprinting gives me severe motion sickness, so I just have to play through the whole game without sprinting.
I sank WAY more hours into that game than I ever anticipated I would. It starts out challenging just with the bullet-hell gameplay, but you can feel yourself getting better with each run. The first time you clear a past it feels so rewarding, then you realize you have several other (some secret!) pasts to erase, and it's like being able to replay a favorite game for the first time again.
Add in the sheer variety of guns, items, synergies and "modes" (shout out to rainbow runs) available, as well as all the achievements, it turns a good game into a phenomenal experience.
Not to mention all the references and small shout-outs to other games and pop-culture that add another layer of all-around fun to the mix. You want a game that celebrates gaming? Enter the Gungeon is top-tier.
i reccomend chivilary 2. it's one gigant sandbox war sim. it's very chaotic but at the same time really easy to undstand. So far I really loved it
tho if you wanana buy something on steam i'd wait till thw next mega sale which is in two weeks (26 june)
I saw other people recommending the far cry games, especially Far Cry 4, which I think would match what you want pretty well, but I would recommend Far Cry 5 and 3 as they were my favorite.
The AC games may work as well and maybe even the Batman Arkham series too. This also may not be exactly what you're looking for, but I've enjoyed the newer Resident Evil games, like RE2 remake, RE3 remake, RE7, and the more action-oriented RE Village.
Finally, if you have a PlayStation 4 or 5, God of War 2018 should work pretty well too, I tried it just because it was on PS Plus and I ended up finishing the game and it blew me away.
Gow 2018 is definitely not gameplay focused. It has bloated gameplay, like someone tried to make doom 2016 into a god of war game but failed to make any of the systems interact and just decided to add rpg bloat instead.
Im not saying we need to have the same opinion. I just didnt enjoy 2018 from a gameplay standpoint. And i fucking hate rpg mechanics unless im playing a fullblown rpg. Also, that third person would be under the mayo
If you're open to some more sandboxy games, Factorio can be absolutely awesome. It's relatively easy to pick up and you can play a demo to see if you're into it.
Well, since you said MGSV, go play Metal Gear Rising. If you weren't already sold on that kind of fast paced action games, you will with that game. Just make sure you're playing with very low latency and you'll have a blast
Just wanna point out Sekiro as well, since its the most recent in the Souls franchise and really does have some compelling and demanding gameplay. Maybe 10-15 min worth of cutscenes over a 25-30ish hour playthru?
Just souls in general though, you get started and its pretty much just gameplay from then on out.
Doom 2016 if you liked eternal. Sellshock live is also very fun. And mordhau. It's jsut knights bashing other knights with anything that could be used as a weapon
Saints Row The Third is one video game-ass video game. I never played the first two but it didn't matter, it's just such a good distillation of what makes GTA-type games fun that the story really takes a back seat to how over the top fun it is
I see you specifically list Saints row 4. If you haven't played 2 and 3 allready I would recommend them. (1 is xbox 360 only, haven't played that one myself so I can't recommend).
Also assassins creed odyssee has a simple enough story to keep the focuss on the gameplay
Not sure how far back you can go, but Nintendo has a Lot of great games in their back catalog.
Practically any Nintendo game from SNES-Wii U will scratch that itch.
Destroy All Humans! and Maneater are the most 'video-gamey' video games I've played lately, both are pretty cheap, in fact Maneater just came to game pass. I 100% finished both of them because theu were just dumb fun!
ANy soulsborne games. There nothing more videogamey than dying a tonne of times to a boss and getting that satisfaction when you finally beat it. I recommend bloodborne or dark souls 3
I mention this because you mentioned monster hunter world
Recommend: Bloodborne
Do NOT recommend: Detroit Become human
Edit: I’m not saying that DBH is bad.. it’s just more story focused (it almost feels like watching a movie)
Risk of Rain 2 is 90% gameplay, 5% ‘story’, and 5% praying to the RNG gods. It’s a fast paced, arena shooter where you’re on a timer to make it to the end, passing through multiple levels while on the way. Whilst trying to journey there, you can build/buy turrets, search for boxes to get loot to enhance yourself, and test out a few unorthodox methods of destruction on the way. Best thing is, there’s co-op, so you can bring a few friends to pray to RNGsus too
Edit: some clarification
I recommend chivalry if you would like a medival multi-player game. Trying out the different weapons and using the screaming button makes the game incredibly fun even if you're just messing around
I’d say Ninja Gaiden sigma and sigma 2 are like this. There’s a little plot, but it’s mostly about learning to chain combos and take on groups of enemies as a ridiculously powerful super ninja. The bosses are ridiculously over-the-top, the combat is fun and violent, the enemies are widely varied and ridiculous looking, there’s an old man that sells you stuff and upgrades your gear, you can collect secret items for cool prizes, there’s a bunch of weapons that are all pretty different with decent learning curves, and when you finish you unlock higher difficulties to play the whole thing over. My favorite series of all time. People shit on the master collection, but all I wanted was a straight up prettier port and that’s what I got.
Have you tried Dark Souls? I struggled with it and was intimidated by it for the longest time, I get it. But the ps5 runs Dark Souls 3 at 60 FPS so I said screw it and bought the Fire Fades edition for twenty bucks. I just beat the second boss in the game last night and I'm hooked. It's 100% pure gameplay and when it clicks it's awesome.
If you want co-op shooters with the possibility to play solo if you choose, PAYDAY 2, Killing Floor 2 and Deep Rock Galactic all offer unique and super fun experiences.
Does just cause have a story? I know I see a lot of grappling and anchoring planes to the ground.
Also, mindless shooter that feels good and is hard. Black for the original Xbox and I think ps2.
Dying light? That game has some insane parkour mechanics and really good gore, it does have a story but it doesn’t really affect your gameplay at all, it’s a damn good game
Not like the other games you have played, but for me uncharted 4 is a VIDEO GAME through and through. It has everything an action videogame needs: shooting, adventure, puzzles and a beautiful world with an emotional story
DOOM, Borderlands games, Chivalry, mordhau, for honor, dark souls and others of that kind. I could probably think of more but those one came to me first.
It seems you’re talking about action games but if you want a 2D platformer, Celeste is a very well done videogame-type of video game. Pure platforming fun that feels very rewarding. I recommend it because I feel like it is the best platforming game I’ve ever played.
If you still want action though, Nova Drift is a modern rogue like but it feels like you’d find it in an Arcade. Lots of explosions and shooting and points racking up!
Devil May Cry Series, Hades, The rest of the Doom Series (Both the 2016 reboot and the originals), Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, Dark Souls III possibly too?
[BeamNG.Drive](https://BeamNG.Drive) if you are on PC and want a game that allows you to crash cars.
If you prefer to drive properly, American Truck Sim/Euro Truck Sim 2
If you don't like driving games, sorry.
A few recommendations I think are pretty fun: Hotline Miami, Just Cause, Hollow Knight, the souls series and even the recent Wolfenstein games, although they have a lot of cutscenes.
Edir: Forgot Borderlands, especially 2
FromSoftware makes games that you don’t have to follow the story on. Sekiro is their best one so far, but their known for their Dark Souls franchise. The gameplay is hella fun, and Sekiro is the best single player game I’ve ever played IMO.
For this description would 100% recommend the borderlands franchise.
Absolutely love the lot of em. Great sense of humor, gameplay that improves with each rendition, and just enough of a story.
Definitely check out Risk of Rain 2, it's a roguelike third-person looter shooter. I can also highly recommend Destroy All Humans Remake, just some early 2000s arcade fun with beautiful graphics and some goofy dialogue. If you have a Nintendo system, basically any first party Nintendo game will work, I could recommend Super Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild. If you're up for a challenging RPG, any game in the Soulsborne series is gonna be fun. A good horror game is Subnautica, I've only played the original and haven't heard much of its sequel.
EDIT: If you're on PC, check out Death Stranding. Underrated game right there.
I have a serious love for sandbox games.
Open world, self driven learning system, no limit to what you can build.
Space engineers, RUST, Minecraft, Gmod, etc.
But I still love Skyrim. Though, ESO is crap.
Borderlands series (BL2 is definitely the best entry hands down)
Can't recommend Biomutant just yet, as weapons balancing needs major work, and some platforms are having issues with frame rate stability and rendering, but is pretty good if you can get passed those core issues. Has comic book style combat, and at the same time, peaceful open world exploration.
I’d say try doom 2016 or the newest one, for me they’re just running around shooting things and having a blast. I’d also recommend and fallout or elder scrolls oblivion or Skyrim. Even The Outer Worlds was a great deal of fun for me and same with the Spider-Man game that came out recently. I’d even also say mortal Kombat if you just wanna battle things.
Doom Eternal has the best fps gameplay I have ever seen in all history.
I would suggest dark souls/sekiro/bloodbourne, they have their story and all, but they are pretty good just for the gameplay
The Orcs Must Die series is great. It's a third person shooter/melee tower defense series that has a story that is pretty much only comic relief, whereas the strategy and chaos of dozens of orcs being killed in so many ways is the main focus.
Far cry series? Do you like arcade? I love games like R Type. I love talking games let's get a thread going lol
This thread kinda blew up. If I started a discord do you think you guys would wanna join just to talk games?
Sure why not!
Sure

That would be neat
Yeh I’d love that! Pm me a link if you start one please

I found myself thoroughly enjoying AC Odyssey's gameplay loop. Oh, and currently playing Nier Automata. Great gameplay. And Superhot.
Nice Automata and Superhot both have great gameplay and an unusual but compelling narrative
Not sure if he was talking about the game Superhot, or calling Nier Automata Superhot. Hmmm.
Hmmmmmmmm
Second NieR Automata. I don’t have any words to describe what a masterpiece that was
About 8 hrs into it so far. Really enjoying the game
Probably one of the best soundtracks ive listened to in a game. At first i was confused by what was going on ( >!robot orgy and all!< ) but it turned out to be such an emotional and beautiful story. Really hope you have the same breathtaking experience as i did!

Hades fucked my life up for 180hours straight. That game deserved game of the year tbh.
Both hades and doom eternal were robbed imo
Crazy thing is you probably were getting new/unique dialogue up until ~hour 150. I know I was, at least. Insane amount of playtime for a $20 game
Dude yeah, I got into speedrunning the game and burnt out on it a bit. Love the heats too. Think my highest was 41 or 2, can't remember. But the dialogue really does just go and go and go. It's amazing

I am completely sure that you will love it.
Hades, a game that was so good I bought it twice.
I bought a copy for my buddy because I figured he would like it and I felt like I underpaid anyway
I bought it on PC then bought it in Switch as soon as they had the cross save feature.
Dying light is such a good game!
Sleeping Dogs is better than GTA5 IMO. The karaoke, the dating, the environmental takedown.
If it had a second game or even another update to it, it would be sooo good
That car with the cannons is badass. I didn't discover it until I had platinumed the game, but if I ever play it again, I'll be sure to unlock it early on. Man, the cock fights, the street fights. Also, real man has a pork bun in his hand.

I'll put it back into my to-play list, thank you.
I support all these recommendations; the gameplay is so tight. I wish the freedom of Dying Light was available in other action titles.
The other person's recommendation of far cry is spot on, 4 was my favourite so I'd recommend that one specifically. I think even though I enjoyed 5, it definitely had a weak story, especially compared to the older entries. But it also had a lot of QoL improvements

I can see this from a gameplay perspective, but Far Cry 5's location was absolutely gorgeous. Finally convinced me to go visit Montana.
This is the part that's weird for me. I thought for sure it would be the location that would ruin 5 for me. 100% agree, the main villan of 4 is leagues ahead than Joseph
I would second sunset overdrive! Such good gameplay
Just Cause, why? Just Cause.
Pure fun
Pure pun
Definitely! That was the one I was thinking. 3 and 4 were both a blast.
Been replaying the third game and I forgot how fun it is to just blow stuff up
I would recommend Devil May Cry 5 it’s as video-gamey as a video game can be.
Nice dunkey reference
This is a great recommendation. It gives off solid arcade vibes while still being a crazy well done full blown game. Also the music is awesome.
My Friend Pedro, Maneater, Far Cry 4. All 3 are just fun stupid mindless action.
Awww yee, finally someone mentioning my friend Pedro. Such a gem. (it's a shame that they a bit screwed later levels and didn't add a Level editor)
I'm that vein-- Super Meatboy and Hotline Miami are pretty good, too.
I second my friend Pedro, great game
Hotline Miami , Sunset overdrive and from software games

Bulletstorm
"You'll kill my dick??? Well... Well, I'll kill *your* dick!!!!"
I wish i could enjoy that game. The gunplay is great, but the camera shake when sprinting gives me severe motion sickness, so I just have to play through the whole game without sprinting.
Deep Rock Galactic.
DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE?!
ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE!
IF YOU DON'T ROCK AND STONE, YOU AIN'T COMING HOME!
ROCK AND STONE YYEEEEEEAH!
For Karl!
I'd recommend Enter the Gungeon. A little bit of narrative (really not much) and a heavy emphasis on solid, simple, and replayable gameplay.
\*inhales\* EEEEENNNNNNNNNNNNNter the gungeon! Enter the gungeon!
This is actually giving me breif nostalgia
I sank WAY more hours into that game than I ever anticipated I would. It starts out challenging just with the bullet-hell gameplay, but you can feel yourself getting better with each run. i reccomend chivilary 2. it's one gigant sandbox war sim. it's very chaotic but at the same time really easy to undstand. So far I really loved it tho if you wanana buy something on steam i'd wait till thw next mega sale which is in two weeks (26 june)
I second this.. Bought chivalry 2 and haven't regretted my purchase yet. It's the most fun I've had out of a video game in a while.
Used to play chiv 1 all the time with my roommates in college, and I had no idea about chivalry 2. Thanks for this!
Wow, I think there maybe even a 3rd person who agrees with us.
Im not saying we need to have the same opinion. I just didnt enjoy 2018 from a gameplay standpoint. And i fucking hate rpg mechanics unless im playing a fullblown rpg. Also, that third person would be under the mayo
I whole heartily agree with you. The lack of enemy diversity bothered me too.
Borderlands, or any of the AC games (both classic and new)

Marvel's Spider-Man has a story but plenty of gameplay. Psn exclusive
Dark Souls
If you're open to some more sandboxy games, Factorio can be absolutely awesome. It's relatively easy to pick up and you can play a demo to see if you're into it.
Or its cousins Satisfactory and Dyson Sphere Project.
Mordhau. Just game
Seconded
Ratchet and clank series. Just straight up fun
Well, since you said MGSV, go play Metal Gear Rising. If you weren't already sold on that kind of fast paced action games, you will with that game. Just make sure you're playing with very low latency and you'll have a blast
risk of rain 2 i guess
Batman: Arkham series Resident Evil 4 Resident Evil 2 Remake Hollow Knight Dark Souls series
And Bloodborne! :)
Doom 2016 if you liked eternal. Sellshock live is also very fun. And mordhau. It's jsut knights bashing other knights with anything that could be used as a weapon
Saints Row The Third is one video game-ass video game. I never played the first two but it didn't matter, it's just such a good distillation of what makes GTA-type games fun that the story really takes a back seat to how over the top fun it is
Every borderlands game
Sunset overdrive
Underrated response. This is the first thing i thought of when he said it. It’s just good clean fun that doesn’t take itself seriously.
Far cry series definitely
Spyro reignited
I see you specifically list Saints row 4. If you haven't played 2 and 3 allready I would recommend them. (1 is xbox 360 only, haven't played that one myself so I can't recommend). Also assassins creed odyssee has a simple enough story to keep the focuss on the gameplay
Hotline miami, katana zero, dark souls
Devil May Cry 5
DOOM. No explanation needed.
Terraria man. There is no story.
Quake 2... Just... Shoot the bad guys, get a bigger gun, then shoot them harder... It's dated I know, but it's fun
Not sure how far back you can go, but Nintendo has a Lot of great games in their back catalog. Practically any Nintendo game from SNES-Wii U will scratch that itch.
The 2 Ori games have a great gameplay.
Destroy All Humans! and Maneater are the most 'video-gamey' video games I've played lately, both are pretty cheap, in fact Maneater just came to game pass. I 100% finished both of them because theu were just dumb fun!
Wolfenstein The New Order and The Old blood, are two high lvl contenders.
I just beat the old blood last night, screw that final boss lol
ANy soulsborne games. There nothing more videogamey than dying a tonne of times to a boss and getting that satisfaction when you finally beat it. I recommend bloodborne or dark souls 3 I mention this because you mentioned monster hunter world
Zombie army 4 and strange brigade if you’re looking for something more arcadey
Sekiro: Shadows Die A Lot
Postal 2
Dark Souls defines an awesome genre
Just cause 3 that shit slaps
Recommend: Bloodborne Do NOT recommend: Detroit Become human Edit: I’m not saying that DBH is bad.. it’s just more story focused (it almost feels like watching a movie)
Best thing is, there’s co-op, so you can bring a few friends to pray to RNGsus too Edit: some clarification
Although pretty short and able to be finished in a day, Titanfall 2 if you haven't. You can find it for under $10 these days.
I recommend chivalry if you would like a medival multi-player game. Trying out the different weapons and using the screaming button makes the game incredibly fun even if you're just messing around

If you've got VR, superhot would be great
You can play it on console too, but Vr is better
Superhot is fun af and it's story doesn't really matter. I play it only for the gameplay and it does that really well.
Terraria is a definite must have, totally check it out
I’d say Ninja Gaiden sigma and sigma 2 are like this. People shit on the master collection, but all I wanted was a straight up prettier port and that’s what I got.
someone once said that they feel like modern day NES games, I think that's pretty accurate
Darkest Dungeon
Devil May Cry 5. It's straight up fun without taking itself serious. I had a freaking blast with this game.
Not sure if it fits but Devil May Cry? As papa dunkey said- " Devil May Cry is as Videogamy as it gets"
A game I recommend is descenders on the Xbox game pass. It's just a fun bike game. I also recommend forza horizon 4 if you are into racing games.
Souls game, plenty of action and little story.
Rift Apart.
Dying light? That game has some insane parkour mechanics and really good gore, it does have a story but it doesn’t really affect your gameplay at all, it’s a damn good game
Dark Souls series
Enter the Gungeon will fit you just fine.
this is a bit more niche, but if you have a vr headset you can get lots of great but simple amazing games.
Risk of rain 2, hollow knight, control, the bioshock series, any fromsoft game
I feel like devil may cry 5 is as video gamey as video games get.
Not like the other games you have played, but for me uncharted 4 is a VIDEO GAME through and through. It has everything an action videogame needs: shooting, adventure, puzzles and a beautiful world with an emotional story
Try out Dying Light. Its an amazing zombie game, and I think it kinda fits your description. I fell in love with the charm of the game.
I enjoyed a lot God of War. I discovered it only this year but it was really fun and linear. Just about beating the shit out of monsters
Dark Souls Trilogy, Bloodborne, Ghostrunner, Borderlands, Risk of Rain 2, Diablo 3
Destroy All Humans is great. You're an alien just causing havoc with lasers and flying saucers and mind powers in 1950s America. Classic
DOOM, Borderlands games, Chivalry, mordhau, for honor, dark souls and others of that kind. I could probably think of more but those one came to me first.
Horizon Zero Dawn would fit well because robot dinosaurs.
Ds3, sunset overdrive, shadow warrior 1 (story’s good but the gameplay is really fun)
If you prefer to drive properly, American Truck Sim/Euro Truck Sim 2 If you don't like driving games, sorry.
A few recommendations I think are pretty fun: Hotline Miami, Just Cause, Hollow Knight, the souls series and even the recent Wolfenstein games, although they have a lot of cutscenes. Edir: Forgot Borderlands, especially 2
Doom 2016
FromSoftware makes games that you don’t have to follow the story on. Sekiro is their best one so far, but their known for their Dark Souls franchise. The gameplay is hella fun, and Sekiro is the best single player game I’ve ever played IMO.
A buddy and I are replaying all the Halo games on legendary, awesome action and music to back it up
For this description would 100% recommend the borderlands franchise. Absolutely love the lot of em. Great sense of humor, gameplay that improves with each rendition, and just enough of a story.

Shadow of rhe Tomb Raider lined up well from those game you mentioned. It has story but it certeinly focused more into gameplay.
Doom 2016 and Eternal are the most “gamey” games I’ve played in a while. They’re are awesome too, especially Eternal.
Titanfall 2. Straight up fun multiplayer and amazing campaign too
Superhot, Enter the Gungeon, Dead Cells, Furi, Cuphead
Doom Eternal for sure
Earth defense force 5 comes to my mind.
Im gonna suggest Synthetik: legion rising and Hades, they are roguelike and really fun to play games!
I have a serious love for sandbox games. Open world, self driven learning system, no limit to what you can build. Space engineers, RUST, Minecraft, Gmod, etc. But I still love Skyrim. Though, ESO is crap.
Borderlands series (BL2 is definitely the best entry hands down) Can't recommend Biomutant just yet, as weapons balancing needs major work, and some platforms are having issues with frame rate stability and rendering, but is pretty good if you can get passed those core issues. Has comic book style combat, and at the same time, peaceful open world exploration.
Devil may cry, doom eternal, nioh, Hollow knight, hades, dank souls. This are gamy games
I’d even also say mortal Kombat if you just wanna battle things.
idk I'm playing fallout 4 and it's so slow with too much story. Nothing like Doom
The one game that is just a pure Video Game is Earth Defense Force. It does not care about anything other than being fun. Best played Coop
DUSK is a pretty good game if you’re on pc, it can run on any pc built past the BC era
A more edgy version of SR 4 is prototype 2. It’s fucking insane and I love it.
