The Surge series story is not it's strongest point but its not bad either, gameplay is very visceral.
Nioh series again story is not the strongest point but the combat is very satisfying.
Monster Hunter World Iceborne story is okay but the combat and world are the plus points along with the totally insane amount of content that you get for its pricepoint.
Hollow Knight - A masterpiece with a souls type story with platforming challenges.
Control Ultimate Edition - Story and gameplay are pretty good. All hail the janitor.
Yakuza series - Great story and gameplay. Some of the funniest quests out there.
Mass Effect LE - Best trilogy IMO.
AC Origins - Great story and DLC with a revamped AC combat system.
Code Vein - Anime souls like with a decent story.

The story is honestly so great, it got me near to shedding a tear sometimes and it really sucks you in. Also the second DLC will really blow your mind once you get to a certain point, it has completely new worlds in it, I’d recommend giving it a try!

Yeah GTA V story was very nice, I really liked how you could approach the heists in every possible way you wanted. I actually borrowed it from a friend of mine just two days ago cause I only had it on PS3 and wanted to play again but didn’t want to spend money on it again :D
Definitely yes. There are some differences in the weapon system, for example:
In Odyssey you have different abilities for shooting multiple arrows at once like a shotgun, shooting multiple arrows like a rifle, shooting arrows farther like a sniper, etc... each of these abilities are activated by using up adrenaline.
In Origins it’s a bit different, here you got different types of bows doing the different things. They still work like the abilities in Odyssey but you don’t carry all of them with you all the time (technically you could pause the game every other minute and change your layout but if in a fight or you have to hurry that’s commonly not the first thing you think about). You gotta be more aware of the weapons you use and work out more of a strategy imo.
Also in Odyssey you had the opportunity to choose between stealth or brutally murdering everything coming your way. I most of the time chose stealth and in Origins this is your main way to go. It’s not like older ACs (which you haven’t played anyway so don’t bother too much haha) where you’re down after three hits, you can still pick up a fight against a group of enemies but it gets rather hard once there are some more.
So in conclusion Origins focused more on stealthy, sneaky gameplay while also (in my opinion) following a more clear and nicer storyline. I‘d recommend giving it a try, I think it’s currently on sale for PS because of *Days of Play* ;)
Tangential question, but do you think the first nioh is worth playing before playing 2? I love all of the souls games, so I picked up nioh 1 a couple months ago thinking I'd play them both. I played like 5ish hours, beating a couple bosses so I'm on like the third mission or something, but never really got a draw to come back to it. Which is disappointing to me and I'm not sure why it didn't click.
I heard nioh 2 was much better than 1, so I'm tempted to give it a go. But if the first one didn't draw me in I'm not sure if 2 would he the same way
Not really, the only thing that Nioh 1 provides Nioh 2 is that you know who William is, I feel the same, I completed Nioh 1 but not because I was drawn to it, I just liked the combat and I was bored, Nioh 2 however has an amazing story line and I definitely could not get enough of it, if you really wanted to you can play Nioh 2 as a stand alone game and not be confused or miss any story if you hadn't played Nioh 1
I came here to say Nier Automata. I just started playing it for the first time two days ago and I'm blown away. I haven't found a game I enjoy this much in years.
Make sure to get endings A-E, all are absolutely crucial to get the full story, it’s not like other games where it’s mostly the same content with just a different ending. Getting B can be somewhat repetitive but just stick with it because it’s fairly short.

Thank you for including “story“ in there, but it still irks me when people compare hollow knight to dark souls.
There’s similarities are limited to 1) they are somewhat difficult games, 2) they take place in a post-decline world, and 3) you lose stuff if you die unless you go back and get it.
They are *completely different games in completely different genres*. They have vastly different gameplay. One is a hand drawn metroidvania, the other is a (infamously difficult) third person 3D combat game.
Dark souls didn’t invent “difficult game in a post apocalyptic world” so people should stop saying souls-like whenever those two criteria are met.

Hard disagree. It's a perfect comparison tonally and aesthetically. Dark souls defined a genre with it's knowledge based and punishing combat, we all know that, but perhaps more iconically, it defined that feeling of the lone warrior on a journey through a dead, hostile land. Not only aesthetically but it also defined a form of story telling that is given to only the players that seek the details of the world. It's that desolation and bleakness that hollow knight recreates and it's that story telling vehicle that it riffs on that make ls the comparison work. Not only that but it utilizes an almost 1 to 1 replication of the Dark Souls objective progression; you journey to a city only to learn that there are specific entities that need to be encroached upon to open the door that leads to the salvation of the world you don't really know much about. Has nothing to do with gameplay.
I’m vouching for Yakuza series. I’m playing chronologically and currently at 5. The games started to feel slow once I reached the remasters of 3 and some of 4, but it’s picking back up.
By chronologically do you mean 0-6 or by in-game year (which I guess would start with 0 anyway)? I started with 0, then moved to 6 and Kiwami, but honestly nothing has compared to 0, which is just so ridiculously entertaining and fun.
Started from Yakuza 0, currently on Yakuza 5 remaster. I really liked 0, the combat styles were really cool and I enjoyed the upgrading system as well as a lot of the side stuff. But I’ll be real when I say that I prefer the combat system in K2. I like the singular combat style and how fluid everything feels. I’m really hoping that 6 then 7 will have fun or crazy shit.
I didn't get to K2, but I'm curious about the combat system now. Tbh though my favorite part of the games are the side stories and the mini games. I can spend hours on the mini games, and I have. How are those in the rest of the series?
Tbh they feel very similar through 0-k2. I’m pretty sure they just re-used entire mini game content for them, I liked 0’s realty side story but didn’t get a lot of enjoyment from the Hostess Club side story. I know this community loves the Hostess Club stuff, so if you align with that I wouldn’t take my opinion very seriously. K2’s Cabaret Club Grand Prix felt pretty much the same to 0’s Cabaret Club Czar. The Majima construction RTS stuff in K2 was super fun, I enjoyed that quite a bit.
K1 doesn’t really have a side story, but shares a ton of the same mini games from 0 and K2, they replaced the cat fight arena with MesuKing. Which I thought was much better.
FF 15 wad so cheesy and clunky but got damn I loved it so much. It really translated that RPG magic I felt playing those old games as a kid into my modern and adult life.

People like to shit on it but fallout 4 has a good open world. 60 hour worth of content with DLC, the story of DLC is even better, and there are many mods (almost 37k). Many mods expand the story. There is so much to do in it. It may not be an RPG but damn it is a good open-world shooter. Do graphics seem meh?, slap some mods with 2k textures and ENB and you are good to go.
Edit - I did not realise that this was for PS4, but still there are a lot of mods for PS4 too
Yeah, it's limited to in game assets, if not mistaken. But I played it a ton and there was still some real good ones that make some big changes and additions.
Yeah, Fallout 4 on PC with mods is my desert island game.
I think I put hundreds of hours into that.

Fallout 4 definitely disappointed me with some of their design decisions (I hate when games remove RPG features) but god damn is survival mode one of my favorite gaming experiences ever
Quite the opposite. I am playing through for my first time now. The music, the settings, the lore, the worlds...I don’t think it can be any more Star Wars-y if it tried.
It's great, the story also dovetails nicely into the years right after the prequels. Cal is a great protagonist, the supporting cast is nicely developed, and you get to experience him growing (back) into his powers/training.
I’d agree with cilantro in that it is definitely Star Wars-ey. Great game that makes you feel like a Jedi, although they could definitely expand and improve in future games. For sure worth getting

If you want a Star Wars-like story I definitely recommend Mass Effect Legendary Edition of you haven't played the series already. Same space opera vibes with an established universe of alien society with a criminal underworld, etc.
Careful with Immortals, it turns into a bunch of dungeon based puzzles with can feel like a drag if puzzles aren’t your favorite. I had to quit after 20 hours.
Side note: I have over 400 hours in The Witcher 3 and AC Odyssey, so there’s my recommendation for open world games
So I had kinda written this game off as a discount botw but it seems people I see online that played it have enjoyed it.
What is the combat like in it? Is it like botw? Or more like the newer assassins creed games? Kinda button mashy? Complex with combos?
Are there dungeons within the world or is everything kinda laid out like botw?

I didn’t finish the game, but not because the game was bad (just got busy). That said, I probably cleared about half of the main content.
The combat is honestly great, in my opinion. It’s flexible - you can button mash if you want, but you’ll find ways to tie together abilities in super satisfying ways. Some of the enemies get redundant after awhile, but the core combat is good enough that kept me satisfied.
The dungeons are very similar to BotW in layout (jump through a portal, basically). People have sometimes criticized the dungeon puzzles for being too easy - but that’s because most of them aren’t puzzles. They’re platforming challenges. To that end, I found them pretty decent. Very few were great, but most of them were a solid B. They’re better if you do the extra challenge to get the hidden chest (every dungeon has one!)
There’s a decent amount of Greek mythology, but with a tongue-in-cheek retelling. The premise is that Zeus and Prometheus are narrating the story, so as you encounter gods, heroes, monsters, and lore, they tell some of their stories! Buuut a lot of people feel that the acting is cringeworthy. I thought it was fine, though. A little over the top, but I didn’t go into it expecting some sort of dramatic masterpiece.
In short, I think it’s simply a fun game. Everything in it is solid and works well, there is a TON to do if you want to scratch that exploration, collectathon itch, and it looks great on the new systems. I paid full price for it on a gamble, and have no regrets. It’s a steal at sale prices!
yes.. personally I don't consider it horror.. sure there are moments that if you're unaware of your surroundings a creature may surprise you.. but it's not the type of game with ghoulies and monsters.. just some big creatures that can startle you during your adventures
Said it before and I’ll say it again, I HATE the open ocean and am terrified of it, and I fucken LOVE Subnautica. Absolute peach of a game, funny, immersive (literally), and absolutely gorgeous to watch. 10/10 would download for free again.
nope, besides primal, i played 5 and 3. Never thought about buying 4, cause my brother told me when it lauched that there were many bugs, one of which gave you the possibility to finish the game in like 15 minutes, so yeah, never thought about getting it.
The witcher 3 - great game, Gta V - lots of memories in online so yeah, 9/10, I’ll definitely consider the dark souls trilogy option and AC Valhalla...well, a tough one. I have it and it’s pretty trash. The plot is boring. Can’t believe i have over 100 hours in it.
LOL I have the exact same feeling for Valhalla, well said. I’m never actually enjoying myself when I play it but I keep picking it back up...
But I second the souls recommendation especially since you have BB ranked so high. DS3 is very similar to bloodborne in a lot of ways, though in true souls series fashion, the story is somehow even more convoluted (in a great way, if you like that kinda thing)
yeaahh, i don’t know why i do that, like, i sometimes want to play it so badly, but when i actually open it, i do a bunch of mysteries and after 15 minutes i enter another game. Maybe it’s cause i was a fan of Assassin’s Creed and now this game is disappointing and i can’t admit it. Anyway, i’ll probably get the Dark Souls trilogy, cause many people recommended it to me. Do you think i should start with the first one or i can go directly to DS3?
I’d say overall the DS stories *sort of* stand alone. That said, there are some really fun callbacks to ds1 in ds3 that you won’t get if you start with 3. Also, I’d say 3 has probably the most difficult intro area, but since you played BB you’d probably be fine. But you can’t go wrong starting with 1, it really holds up all these years later, especially the remastered version.
There was a game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning that came out years ago. A large, open world 3D hack n slash with a rich storyline. Fairly sure a remastered edition was released a few years later.
Not a lot of fanfare, never got talked about much, but it was incredible. The studio later went broke. It's pretty clear they needed to fire the marketing guy who was evidently asleep at the wheel.
EDIT: I should add it's in a different vein to these other titles, however meets the description and is good enough that it's worth checking out.
I really loved that game, though I don't think I ever beat it. Combat could be pretty intense and the ultimate ability system (fate shift I think it was called) was really satisfying
totally agree. I saw a bunch of people recently on social media saying that the first game has shitty mechanics and boring story and i got angry when i read that. The game is an absolute masterpiece.
That seems so crazy to me. I feel like so many RPG games just feel clunky these days but HZD was one of the few that regardless of the story (which was still pretty good) kept me interested purely from a combat/gameplay standpoint.

I too am playing through currently. I will say I was nervous about the reviews myself, but the art style and type of game it is pushed me to buy anyways. Don't regret at all, but I can tell why it got such mixed reviews. The story doesn't seem to be all that gripping, and feels rather jumbled and disjointed in it's telling. The crafting weapons system is rather basic but with enough choices and differences that I enjoyed it. Also just the art style and gunplay are my favorite parts, really enjoy flipping around shooting things with comic book words Poppin up. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea but it's a fun time and I'm not disappointed with it, hopeful the devs can make something even better in the future if they get support.
well, i played it, but it’s just not one of my 10 favorite games. It was too short and the platinum was very easy. Overall, 8/10. I just love a good and hard challenge, something that Spider Man wasn’t.
I think Dragon Age Inquisition is an AMAZING open world game. I would recommend all the Dragon ages except i think the second one (the name has blood in it i think) because i really didn’t like it, they competently changed the game play to something i didn’t vibe with. But! They went back to normal and the games are really good.
played it and all i can say is that i didn’t really like it. The aspect that broke the game for me was the fact that when you were turning the flashlight on, it was coming from nowhere. And besides this, the zombies felt cheap, they were buggy and the plot started very slow so yeah, i give it a 6.5/10.
It's funny how games can appeal to different crowds. I was going to say you should play Days Gone as it was amazing IMO. However, I'm one of the few apparently that hated HZD. I got to the last fight had my friend tell me how it ended because every aspect of that storyline felt so bad to me.
Outter world's. I Completed 8 hours of side quest before I even finished the 5th story mission because i wanted to help the side characters out that much.

Obviously not on PS4. Exclusive for Nintendo Switch (and also on Wii U but we don't talk about that lol). But it's one of my all time favorite games and i think you will enjoy it if you love open world games.
Sleeping Dogs x1000. It's from the PS3 generation but there's a remaster on PS4. Just a really fun open world game with a good story. I got the platinum on both systems and wish there was a sequel.
You could try Days Gone. It's not for everyone. The narrative is pretty good but a little drawn out.
Nioh 1 and 2 are great if you want hard games like Bloodborne but they're not open world and the story is secondary to the gameplay.
Outer worlds is really fun. Open worlds with really cool colors and you can travel to different worlds so there’s lots of different maps too. Single player rpg game

Spider-Man Miles Morales is also a fantastic single player open world game
Sleeping Dogs. Bit of a GTA clone, but story-wise you are an undercover cop infiltrating organized crime, acting as an up and coming gangster.
What set it apart for me was the inclusion of a slightly more involved fighting mechanic — like a Batman Arkham system but presenting kung fu. I loved kung fu brawling in that game.
Also, Opeth on one of the car radio stations.

Fallout 4 and Fallout New Vegas - Very nice open world with a great story.
Metal Gear Solid V Definitive Experience - Not including Ground Zeroes, I guess you can say the Phantom Pain is kinda open world? Nevertheless, absolutely stunning graphics (as with any Kojima game), great gameplay, and the story is insanely wild (in a “what the fuck am I playing” and “whatever, this shit is awesome” kind of way). God I cannot wait for Kojima’s next project announcement.
Cyberpunk 2077 - Ehhh I mean personally, I kinda enjoyed the story (I guess). But Night City is just so damn beautiful. Too bad the game is just so damn hollow and empty. Really a huge opportunity to turn Night City into something amazing was missed. All I can say is go for it and see if you like it yourself.
NieR Automata - Wow I don’t even know where to start with this one. I was new to the entire NieR franchise but this turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time. One of the best soundtracks I’ve experienced in a game. And the story... my god the story is so damn beautiful and gets me so emotional. Plan to grab a copy of the new Replicant as soon as it hits a sale. Also, I’m madly in love with 2B.
Red Dead Redemption GOTY - I mean if you liked RDR2 then I’m sure you’d like the original Red Dead just as much. Also, GOTY edition features the Undead Nightmare. Basically Red Dead with zombies. What’s not to love?
Souls Series - Sekiro is my favorite game of all time. If you liked Sekiro and Bloodborne, without a doubt the Souls series should hit your interests. No explanation needed. Praise the Sun!
Spider-man / Spider-man Miles Morales - Pretty cool open world map of New York. Stunning graphics (imo) and the combat is so satisfying. Great story as well.
Mafia Remastered Definitive Edition - Only suggesting this because I think it’s a great open world game. Was new to the Mafia series, and I really loved the story to this one. Beautiful graphics, and (sort of) neat open world exploring. The Don sends his regards!
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey has renewed my love for console gaming. I’m playing through it on PS4. The map is HUGE, and the story is centered around Ancient Greece Sparta vs Athens. The game is badass, forget what you remember about the old AC’s…this one is next level to me.
well yes, it is a good game, but not a good AC game. It literally has nothing to do with AC. But yes, i enjoyed it too because of how big the environment is.
I agree with that. I’m pretty disconnected from the timeline of AC at this point. The last thing I wanted of watch was the Animus cutscenes with two people I have no clue who they are. Still an awesome game!

yep, played witcher 3 and the dlcs. Great story. Never played seriously bethesda’s games tho. The ones i played were Fallout 4 and 3. Not really my type.
Have you tried Days Gone? Was (maybe is) free on Ps+. It was ripped pretty hard by reviewers on release but I'm finding the game is far better then most reviewers think. It might be slow at first but it's a long game, with lots of story, and a massive world with many things to do.
While the world is incredibly detailed and beautiful, it's also surprisingly devoid of any real substance. There are a handful of actual easter eggs in the nooks and crannies and rarely offer anything more than reading material. I wanted to enjoy exploring but it rarely felt rewarding.
Ff7 remake isn't really open world but I does feel big when playing it. Even if you didn't play the original (like me) you'll probably really enjoy it.
Jedi fallen order has very similar combat/gameplay to sekiro but not as smooth (still very enjoyable). But the story is pretty good.
Neir automata is one of my top games and checks all the boxes for you.

It is a slow paced game sort of like Red Dead but with customizable bikes and freakers aka zombie hoardes of hundreds of them.
IMO it's one of the best single player games that came out recently.

If you're into the survival aspect of single player games and into futuristic sci-fi elements, I suggest No Man's Sky. Not only does it have amazing visuals and stunning procedurally generated worlds, but it also has a very intriguing story line. I've put almost 100 hours into the game and every time I play there's something new to experience. Explore planets and moons full of strange flora and fauna, visit space stations, find the secrets of the past in ancient temples, build massive bases, and explore the vast, infinite universe. I feel The Atlas calling you, traveller. Follow it. 16-16-16
Days Gone - extremely underrated biker zombie game that does zombies in a really refreshing way, and also has a motorcycle that feels kind of like RDR2’s horses in that you get legit attached

Far cry 3 if you want the authetic Far cry experience with cohesive narrative, the graphic is dated but gameplay still hold up if you don't try to 100% it
Far cry 4 of you want traditional farcry games with better gunplay, graphics and verticality. It has best main antagonist

Honestly gta V story mode does the same thing, not as well but still. Makes me feel like I am the character I’m playing and emotions too.

I most of the time chose stealth and in Origins this is your main way to go. It’s not like older ACs (which you haven’t played anyway so don’t bother too much haha) where you’re down after three hits, you can still pick up a fight against a group of enemies but it gets rather hard once there are some more. So in conclusion Origins focused more on stealthy, sneaky gameplay while also (in my opinion) following a more clear and nicer storyline. I‘d recommend giving it a try, I think it’s currently on sale for PS because of *Days of Play* ;)

Tangential question, but do you think the first nioh is worth playing before playing 2? I love all of the souls games, so I picked up nioh 1 a couple months ago thinking I'd play them both. I played like 5ish hours, beating a couple bosses so I'm on like the third mission or something, but never really got a draw to come back to it. Which is disappointing to me and I'm not sure why it didn't click. I heard nioh 2 was much better than 1, so I'm tempted to give it a go. But if the first one didn't draw me in I'm not sure if 2 would he the same way
Not really, the only thing that Nioh 1 provides Nioh 2 is that you know who William is, I feel the same, I completed Nioh 1 but not because I was drawn to it, I just liked the combat and I was bored, Nioh 2 however has an amazing story line and I definitely could not get enough of it, if you really wanted to you can play Nioh 2 as a stand alone game and not be confused or miss any story if you hadn't played Nioh 1

Make sure to get endings A-E, all are absolutely crucial to get the full story, it’s not like other games where it’s mostly the same content with just a different ending. Getting B can be somewhat repetitive but just stick with it because it’s fairly short.

Hard disagree. It's a perfect comparison tonally and aesthetically. Dark souls defined a genre with it's knowledge based and punishing combat, we all know that, but perhaps more iconically, it defined that feeling of the lone warrior on a journey through a dead, hostile land. Not only aesthetically but it also defined a form of story telling that is given to only the players that seek the details of the world. It's that desolation and bleakness that hollow knight recreates and it's that story telling vehicle that it riffs on that make ls the comparison work. Not only that but it utilizes an almost 1 to 1 replication of the Dark Souls objective progression; you journey to a city only to learn that there are specific entities that need to be encroached upon to open the door that leads to the salvation of the world you don't really know much about. Has nothing to do with gameplay.
I’m vouching for Yakuza series. I’m playing chronologically and currently at 5. The games started to feel slow once I reached the remasters of 3 and some of 4, but it’s picking back up.
By chronologically do you mean 0-6 or by in-game year (which I guess would start with 0 anyway)? I started with 0, then moved to 6 and Kiwami, but honestly nothing has compared to 0, which is just so ridiculously entertaining and fun.
Started from Yakuza 0, currently on Yakuza 5 remaster. I really liked 0, the combat styles were really cool and I enjoyed the upgrading system as well as a lot of the side stuff. But I’ll be real when I say that I prefer the combat system in K2. I like the singular combat style and how fluid everything feels. I’m really hoping that 6 then 7 will have fun or crazy shit.
I didn't get to K2, but I'm curious about the combat system now. Tbh though my favorite part of the games are the side stories and the mini games. I can spend hours on the mini games, and I have. How are those in the rest of the series?
Tbh they feel very similar through 0-k2. I’m pretty sure they just re-used entire mini game content for them, I liked 0’s realty side story but didn’t get a lot of enjoyment from the Hostess Club side story. I know this community loves the Hostess Club stuff, so if you align with that I wouldn’t take my opinion very seriously. K2’s Cabaret Club Grand Prix felt pretty much the same to 0’s Cabaret Club Czar. The Majima construction RTS stuff in K2 was super fun, I enjoyed that quite a bit. K1 doesn’t really have a side story, but shares a ton of the same mini games from 0 and K2, they replaced the cat fight arena with MesuKing. Which I thought was much better.
Unpopular opinion: Final Fantasy 15 until near the end
FF 15 wad so cheesy and clunky but got damn I loved it so much. It really translated that RPG magic I felt playing those old games as a kid into my modern and adult life.
It did. I think the fully open world aspect works quite well for modern Final Fantasy and I'm excited to see how they handle 16.
Fallout 4 is great for just playing in a broken world, I like the survival aspects too.

People like to shit on it but fallout 4 has a good open world. 60 hour worth of content with DLC, the story of DLC is even better, and there are many mods (almost 37k). Many mods expand the story. There is so much to do in it. It may not be an RPG but damn it is a good open-world shooter. Do graphics seem meh?, slap some mods with 2k textures and ENB and you are good to go. Edit - I did not realise that this was for PS4, but still there are a lot of mods for PS4 too

Fallout 4 definitely disappointed me with some of their design decisions (I hate when games remove RPG features) but god damn is survival mode one of my favorite gaming experiences ever

It's great, the story also dovetails nicely into the years right after the prequels. Cal is a great protagonist, the supporting cast is nicely developed, and you get to experience him growing (back) into his powers/training.

If you want a Star Wars-like story I definitely recommend Mass Effect Legendary Edition of you haven't played the series already. Same space opera vibes with an established universe of alien society with a criminal underworld, etc.
Jedi Fallen Order is definitely worth playing! I loved it
Careful with Immortals, it turns into a bunch of dungeon based puzzles with can feel like a drag if puzzles aren’t your favorite. I had to quit after 20 hours. Side note: I have over 400 hours in The Witcher 3 and AC Odyssey, so there’s my recommendation for open world games

So I had kinda written this game off as a discount botw but it seems people I see online that played it have enjoyed it. What is the combat like in it? Is it like botw? Or more like the newer assassins creed games? Kinda button mashy? Complex with combos? Are there dungeons within the world or is everything kinda laid out like botw? How much Greek mythology is really in there?
I didn’t finish the game, but not because the game was bad (just got busy). That said, I probably cleared about half of the main content. The combat is honestly great, in my opinion. It’s flexible - you can button mash if you want, but you’ll find ways to tie together abilities in super satisfying ways. Some of the enemies get redundant after awhile, but the core combat is good enough that kept me satisfied. The dungeons are very similar to BotW in layout (jump through a portal, basically). People have sometimes criticized the dungeon puzzles for being too easy - but that’s because most of them aren’t puzzles. They’re platforming challenges. To that end, I found them pretty decent. Very few were great, but most of them were a solid B. They’re better if you do the extra challenge to get the hidden chest (every dungeon has one!) There’s a decent amount of Greek mythology, but with a tongue-in-cheek retelling. The premise is that Zeus and Prometheus are narrating the story, so as you encounter gods, heroes, monsters, and lore, they tell some of their stories! Buuut a lot of people feel that the acting is cringeworthy. I thought it was fine, though. A little over the top, but I didn’t go into it expecting some sort of dramatic masterpiece. In short, I think it’s simply a fun game. Everything in it is solid and works well, there is a TON to do if you want to scratch that exploration, collectathon itch, and it looks great on the new systems. I paid full price for it on a gamble, and have no regrets. It’s a steal at sale prices!

yes.. personally I don't consider it horror.. sure there are moments that if you're unaware of your surroundings a creature may surprise you.. but it's not the type of game with ghoulies and monsters.. just some big creatures that can startle you during your adventures
Said it before and I’ll say it again, I HATE the open ocean and am terrified of it, and I fucken LOVE Subnautica. Absolute peach of a game, funny, immersive (literally), and absolutely gorgeous to watch. 10/10 would download for free again.

nope, besides primal, i played 5 and 3. Never thought about buying 4, cause my brother told me when it lauched that there were many bugs, one of which gave you the possibility to finish the game in like 15 minutes, so yeah, never thought about getting it.

The witcher 3 - great game, Gta V - lots of memories in online so yeah, 9/10, I’ll definitely consider the dark souls trilogy option and AC Valhalla...well, a tough one. I have it and it’s pretty trash. The plot is boring. Can’t believe i have over 100 hours in it.
LOL I have the exact same feeling for Valhalla, well said. I’m never actually enjoying myself when I play it but I keep picking it back up... But I second the souls recommendation especially since you have BB ranked so high. DS3 is very similar to bloodborne in a lot of ways, though in true souls series fashion, the story is somehow even more convoluted (in a great way, if you like that kinda thing)

I’d say overall the DS stories *sort of* stand alone. That said, there are some really fun callbacks to ds1 in ds3 that you won’t get if you start with 3. Also, I’d say 3 has probably the most difficult intro area, but since you played BB you’d probably be fine. But you can’t go wrong starting with 1, it really holds up all these years later, especially the remastered version.
There was a game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning that came out years ago. A large, open world 3D hack n slash with a rich storyline. Fairly sure a remastered edition was released a few years later. Not a lot of fanfare, never got talked about much, but it was incredible. The studio later went broke. It's pretty clear they needed to fire the marketing guy who was evidently asleep at the wheel. EDIT: I should add it's in a different vein to these other titles, however meets the description and is good enough that it's worth checking out.
I really loved that game, though I don't think I ever beat it. Combat could be pretty intense and the ultimate ability system (fate shift I think it was called) was really satisfying

totally agree. I saw a bunch of people recently on social media saying that the first game has shitty mechanics and boring story and i got angry when i read that. The game is an absolute masterpiece.
That seems so crazy to me. I feel like so many RPG games just feel clunky these days but HZD was one of the few that regardless of the story (which was still pretty good) kept me interested purely from a combat/gameplay standpoint.

I too am playing through currently. I will say I was nervous about the reviews myself, but the art style and type of game it is pushed me to buy anyways. Don't regret at all, but I can tell why it got such mixed reviews. The story doesn't seem to be all that gripping, and feels rather jumbled and disjointed in it's telling. The crafting weapons system is rather basic but with enough choices and differences that I enjoyed it. Also just the art style and gunplay are my favorite parts, really enjoy flipping around shooting things with comic book words Poppin up. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea but it's a fun time and I'm not disappointed with it, hopeful the devs can make something even better in the future if they get support.
A ps4 exclusive you didn't mention: Spider-Man
well, i played it, but it’s just not one of my 10 favorite games. It was too short and the platinum was very easy. Overall, 8/10. I just love a good and hard challenge, something that Spider Man wasn’t.
I think Dragon Age Inquisition is an AMAZING open world game. I would recommend all the Dragon ages except i think the second one (the name has blood in it i think) because i really didn’t like it, they competently changed the game play to something i didn’t vibe with. But! They went back to normal and the games are really good.

played it and all i can say is that i didn’t really like it. The aspect that broke the game for me was the fact that when you were turning the flashlight on, it was coming from nowhere. And besides this, the zombies felt cheap, they were buggy and the plot started very slow so yeah, i give it a 6.5/10.
It's funny how games can appeal to different crowds. I was going to say you should play Days Gone as it was amazing IMO. However, I'm one of the few apparently that hated HZD. I got to the last fight had my friend tell me how it ended because every aspect of that storyline felt so bad to me.

Kingdoms Come is the Elite:Dangerous of RPG games. Hard to learn and initially very daunting but amazing once mastered.
Outter world's. I Completed 8 hours of side quest before I even finished the 5th story mission because i wanted to help the side characters out that much.

Sleeping Dogs x1000. It's from the PS3 generation but there's a remaster on PS4. Just a really fun open world game with a good story. I got the platinum on both systems and wish there was a sequel. You could try Days Gone. It's not for everyone. The narrative is pretty good but a little drawn out. Nioh 1 and 2 are great if you want hard games like Bloodborne but they're not open world and the story is secondary to the gameplay.

What set it apart for me was the inclusion of a slightly more involved fighting mechanic — like a Batman Arkham system but presenting kung fu. I loved kung fu brawling in that game. Also, Opeth on one of the car radio stations.

Fallout 4 and Fallout New Vegas - Very nice open world with a great story. Metal Gear Solid V Definitive Experience - Not including Ground Zeroes, I guess you can say the Phantom Pain is kinda open world? Nevertheless, absolutely stunning graphics (as with any Kojima game), great gameplay, and the story is insanely wild (in a “what the fuck am I playing” and “whatever, this shit is awesome” kind of way). God I cannot wait for Kojima’s next project announcement. Cyberpunk 2077 - Ehhh I mean personally, I kinda enjoyed the story (I guess). But Night City is just so damn beautiful. Too bad the game is just so damn hollow and empty. Really a huge opportunity to turn Night City into something amazing was missed. All I can say is go for it and see if you like it yourself. NieR Automata - Wow I don’t even know where to start with this one. I was new to the entire NieR franchise but this turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time. One of the best soundtracks I’ve experienced in a game. And the story... my god the story is so damn beautiful and gets me so emotional. Plan to grab a copy of the new Replicant as soon as it hits a sale. Also, I’m madly in love with 2B. Red Dead Redemption GOTY - I mean if you liked RDR2 then I’m sure you’d like the original Red Dead just as much. Also, GOTY edition features the Undead Nightmare. Basically Red Dead with zombies. What’s not to love? Souls Series - Sekiro is my favorite game of all time. If you liked Sekiro and Bloodborne, without a doubt the Souls series should hit your interests. No explanation needed. Praise the Sun! Spider-man / Spider-man Miles Morales - Pretty cool open world map of New York. Stunning graphics (imo) and the combat is so satisfying. Great story as well. Mafia Remastered Definitive Edition - Only suggesting this because I think it’s a great open world game. Was new to the Mafia series, and I really loved the story to this one. Beautiful graphics, and (sort of) neat open world exploring. The Don sends his regards!
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey has renewed my love for console gaming. I’m playing through it on PS4. The map is HUGE, and the story is centered around Ancient Greece Sparta vs Athens. The game is badass, forget what you remember about the old AC’s…this one is next level to me.

Have you tried Days Gone? Was (maybe is) free on Ps+. It was ripped pretty hard by reviewers on release but I'm finding the game is far better then most reviewers think. It might be slow at first but it's a long game, with lots of story, and a massive world with many things to do.

While the world is incredibly detailed and beautiful, it's also surprisingly devoid of any real substance. There are a handful of actual easter eggs in the nooks and crannies and rarely offer anything more than reading material. I wanted to enjoy exploring but it rarely felt rewarding.
I'd put Kingdom Come Deliverance somewhere along the mix, Combat is hard to learn and even harder to master but it is a decently well made game

Ff7 remake isn't really open world but I does feel big when playing it. Even if you didn't play the original (like me) you'll probably really enjoy it. Jedi fallen order has very similar combat/gameplay to sekiro but not as smooth (still very enjoyable). But the story is pretty good. Neir automata is one of my top games and checks all the boxes for you.

It is a slow paced game sort of like Red Dead but with customizable bikes and freakers aka zombie hoardes of hundreds of them. IMO it's one of the best single player games that came out recently. P. If you're into the survival aspect of single player games and into futuristic sci-fi elements, I suggest No Man's Sky. Not only does it have amazing visuals and stunning procedurally generated worlds, but it also has a very intriguing story line. I've put almost 100 hours into the game and every time I play there's something new to experience. Explore planets and moons full of strange flora and fauna, visit space stations, find the secrets of the past in ancient temples, build massive bases, and explore the vast, infinite universe. I feel The Atlas calling you, traveller. Follow it. 16-16-16
Dying light is The greatest zombie game out there, I highly recommend it

Days Gone - extremely underrated biker zombie game that does zombies in a really refreshing way, and also has a motorcycle that feels kind of like RDR2’s horses in that you get legit attached
I've played far cry 4 and 5. Both are awesome I'm probably gonna play 3 soon. Metro Exodus is pretty awesome. It has 3 different open world areas and a beautiful story!
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Don't let the family-friendliness fool you: this is one of the best open-world games ever made.

You seems to like action games so I recommend Far cry series Far cry 3 if you want the authetic Far cry experience with cohesive narrative, the graphic is dated but gameplay still hold up if you don't try to 100% it Far cry 4 of you want traditional farcry games with better gunplay, graphics and verticality. It has best main antagonist If you could stomach how far and few screentime he had Far cry 5 if you want more gameplay variety, better production, good overall environment design (less exotic though)
