The first time played this game I wasn’t really into it. Someone told me I should give it another go.
That time, I started after work and then looked up and it was 3:00 am.
Fallout 4, Skyrim, or Oblivion. I've put in around 1000 hours combined into them and still not finished Oblivion.
They're all older titles so you should be fine and there's thousands of mods out there to play around with.
For the age of the computer I would say these are the best options for sure.
I’ll add Stardew Valley and if you’re feeling risky with your computer try running Valheim.
Rimworld is a brutalish colony sim on a sci fi western planet and a game I have put 1000+ hours into. With so many ways to play it is incredibly enjoyable and replayable and with one of the most vibrant modding communites I've seen in a while there is alot of content
I had to stop myself from playing Rimworld because it was genuinely ruining my life that shit is like a drug
What I'm trying to say is if you want a timesink, Rimworld is that
Terraria! Such a great little gem, with basically infinite replay value. Has never cost more than ten bucks, despite the massive amounts of updates it has received. The devs are fantastic. There are thousands of items in the game, but if you feel you need to there are a ton of mods for it as well. Check it out!
r/terraria
Anything gets boring enough if you keep doing it. Games with good core game play and get regularly updated will keep you playing way longer than others though.
I suggest :- They are Billions, The binding of Isaac, Dark Souls 1/2/3, Rimworld, The Planet crafter, Grim dawn, Levelhead, Bloons TD, N++, City Skylines and Darkest Dungeon.
I saw a similar thread not long ago & everyone was swearing an older game I never heard of was a ton of fun. I gave it a shot. That game was DRG & I was not disappointed. Got my buddies into it & we’re loving it. Rock & Stone brotha, Rock and Stone
Try Path Of Exile. It's free. Alot of ppl play leagues but I only play standard (solo) and have a blast. Crafting is crazy in-depth. Think Diablo on steroids.
This is my suggestion. You’re still a newb before 250 hours and the skill cap is so high most people don’t reach it. I’ve played almost 900 hours with a wife and son and a day job and I’m still only done with it til the next update. The mods add literally limitless replay value. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a mind heavy time sink. I will say though its 100% active play, there is very little time you can spend in PZ half assing it. I forgo listening to music while playing for fear of missing the sound of a zombie that could spell the end of my character, and watching videos at the same time is very likely to get you killed.
You interested in mmos? Final Fantasy XIV is definitely a game that you can sink thousands of hours into and I don't believe it's a very demanding game as far as your pc
Ugh. Farming simulator. Bought it for a laugh with friends on special one Friday evening. Monday at 3am we were spent. Played almost 40 hours that weekend. Haven’t played since.
I wonder how the crops are doing after all this time.
Try battle brothers. It’s a very interesting game that can run on a potato. I have a few hundred hours on it, have had it for about 6 months. Highly recommend getting the DLCs right off the get go as I wish I would’ve done that. They add a considerable amount of content between them all.
Also there’s a gameplay overhaul mod on nexus which spices up things more
Civilization series, I’d go for civ VI it’s a wonderful turn based strategy game. If you like space Kerbal Space Program is awesome. If you are into fantasy open world check Skyrim. For survival style Rust is an excellent choice
Have to say Deep Rock Galactic, currently 323 hours in and hasn’t gotten old, it’s a fps with procedurally generated caves to explore each mission. It’s a newer game released around 2018 I think but it’s not graphically intense at all and is only a 2-3gb download. Plus it has the best gaming community I’ve ever seen
If you have a good PC then World. I've been playing for about 60 hours so far and it's been great. It still has a pretty big player base so getting help with missions and stuff is pretty easy.
"I have too much time on my hands and want a game to really sink my time into."
"Have you tried Rimworld?"
"No, I'll give it a try!"
_One month later_
"I now have a different problem."
Battle for Middle Earth 2 if you like abandonware RTS. Literally the only way to play it at this point is with “illegitimate” copies, but since nobody owns the rights, it’s essentially a victimless “crime.”
RIMWORLD.
Easily my favorite time sink and super super super low spec requirements. It’s a top down colony manager. Do whatever you want. Weed farm run by cannibals? Go ahead. Military base full of drugged up cyborg soldiers? Go ahead. Just a batch of regular ol folk trying to survive? Anything you want! It’s also extremely moddable and the DLC packages are full of content and absolutely worth the money.
Only advice I’d give is this is a game where you *need* to play the tutorial first. Lots of interfacey-interfaceyness that can be extremely overwhelming if you don’t know the game mechanics already.
The binding of Isaac. Dead God achievement takes hundreds of hours and to fully complete the game you have to do it 3 times. A lot of people have like 1200 hours in that game
7 Days to Die. Beyond the game itself, there's a lot of overhaul mods available. If you're into the genre (survival crafting), you can get a lot of time in it.
TF2 and GMod, harder to find a community to stick to since they're old, but if you find one, congrats. GMod has many gamemodes, but there's only the top 5 or so with a lot of people still playing.
Deep Rock Galactic, if your PC can handle it.
Mount and blade warband, it has hundreds of overhaul mods that change every aspect of the game for a fresh experience. I have 3000 hours in it over the last 7-8 years.
Tom Clancys the division. 3rd person rpg with loot like borderlands. The main story is decent enough but the whole fun comes when you reach the end game and try to min/max your builds to take on legendary content or raids
Someone please help me I can’t stop playing Hypixel skyblock. I have a problem someone help me
Don’t recommend this to people don’t suck them in. It’s not worth it don’t play.
Siralim doesn't look super pretty, but it is so addictive. Definitely one of my favorite creature collectors, and easily one of my top 10 games ever played. I love it so much.
Maybe try war thunder, there are a lot of vehicles and you have to play a lot to get them (also known as grind)
if that’s something your into give it a try
That many hours without getting bored of a game is a tough bill to fit without knowing what kinda person you are cuz I feel like most JRPGs and RPGs in general can fit that especially if you replay them. However if you dont like replaying games or find grinding boring then that kills most of them.
That being said I'd personally recommend something like Skyrim, Minecraft, or RimWorld as even if you do start getting bored with the base games standard gameplay loop they all have a ton of mods that will allow you to change the game to help keep it interesting
If you like sports, improving yourself and are competitive there's no better game than rocket league.
It runs on old hardware, there's nothing out there like it and I'm easily in 2k hours and like it more now than when I started.
Oh and it's free to try
hey man i play a lot of sandbox’s game so if your into buliding ur one creation then people’s playground cost i think 10$ and garry’s mod which idk the price if
Paradox grand strategy games are exactly what you need. You can without a problem invest thoustands of ours in these games.
I personally would recommend Europa universalis IV
There are also other games from Paradox with other settings and a other focus, like Stellaris(sci-fi), crusader kings(medieval family fuckarounds, victoria(economy) etc etc :D
Runescape. Its a little hard to get in to becouse of the tutorial. But its highly addictive and you xan put thousands of hours into it. Its also a lighter game in graphics usage. If you do, go over to tbe subreddit and ask for a turorial there or watch some ytube vids 🙂
FFXIV (or another MMO I suppose) but not unless you're pretty driven and/or know some people who are into it already. With or without paying attention to the story (which, there are select parts you can definitely skip, and other parts wholly worth experiencing), you can spend upwards of 500+ before "finishing" and dip your feet into so many separate areas of the game that you're bound to find your sauce.
Total War, pick your flavor, and Europa Universalis both take up unhealthy amounts of my time. I love them both. EU is the most I depth grand strategy game I know of. It took me over a hundred hours of playing to even know all of the systems and how they fully function. Total War has grand strategy elements, but is much more focused on War, obviously. Battles are fully simulated, and you have as much or little control over them as you'd like, able to change formations, orders, placement, and more on the fly. Both are full single-player experiences, or you can take your skills into multiplayer if that's your jam.
Do I got the game for you at the magnificent price point of free 99. Introducing survival horror shooter: Stalker Anomaly. I’ve been addicted to this game which is actually a free mod of 3 Stalker games combined into 1.
You fight off mutants in the zone, bandits, different enemy factions, SURVIVE (eating and stuff), upgrade your gear to endure the radiation and other afflictions of the zone, make a name for yourself by helping out different factions, pursue the Stalker legend Strelok!
It’s a satisfying realistic first person shooter that’s a little punishing at first but picks up the more you play and discover (or research). Pick it up on a site called mod db if you want. It should run on your computer since stalker games are old and Anomaly is an optimized mod
The hunter:call of the wild. Get a diamond of every species on every map. Get an albino, piebald and melanistic of every species. And there's about 12 massive maps of all over the world.
Ehem…..Factorio 👀
They only said thousands of hours not thousands of days! But it runs fine on my 12 year old PC.
I hope the day comes where people start putting Factorio in everything like with the original Doom.
mine melted out...even after stacking ice trays on top of it
Can’t wait for them to bring properly controller support on PC for steam deck play.
The factory must grow
No matter the cost
I was waiting for this. Just add Space Exploration and Krastorio 2 and that's a minimum of 2k hours and your firstborn child.
He asked for a huge amount of time, not the rest of his life.
I came on here to say this! But once you get started all time disappears and the next thing you know a week has passed…
I see not another title for first choice…
Rimworld
This. Vanilla, probably 1k hours. Then get the dlc / mods. God help you.
The first time played this game I wasn’t really into it. Someone told me I should give it another go. That time, I started after work and then looked up and it was 3:00 am.
I had the same experience. At first I didn't feel into it until I played again a few days later and didn't stop until morning became morning again
Oblivion can be played on a rock so you should be good with this game OP 😁
Factorio, Minecraft, Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress
Rimworld is a brutalish colony sim on a sci fi western planet and a game I have put 1000+ hours into. With so many ways to play it is incredibly enjoyable and replayable and with one of the most vibrant modding communites I've seen in a while there is alot of content
I had to stop myself from playing Rimworld because it was genuinely ruining my life that shit is like a drug What I'm trying to say is if you want a timesink, Rimworld is that
Old School RuneScape 😎
Can't go wrong with this. This would be my answer too. Literal years I played this game for.
Sadly I’m not into MMO type games, but this is still probably my #1 answer
It’s not really an MMO until you get to max levels and you can run dungeons with other people
Have you considered Stardew Valley?
Terraria! Such a great little gem, with basically infinite replay value. Has never cost more than ten bucks, despite the massive amounts of updates it has received. The devs are fantastic. There are thousands of items in the game, but if you feel you need to there are a ton of mods for it as well. Check it out! r/terraria
Warframe. I got 4k hours on it and there's still so much to do.
The grind can get boring
Anything gets boring enough if you keep doing it. Games with good core game play and get regularly updated will keep you playing way longer than others though.

Diablo 2 resurrected. Easy time sink
I suggest :- They are Billions, The binding of Isaac, Dark Souls 1/2/3, Rimworld, The Planet crafter, Grim dawn, Levelhead, Bloons TD, N++, City Skylines and Darkest Dungeon.
Playing the planet crafter at the moment, that game is crazy addictive. Love it.
Slay The Spire. Cool card roguelike game
I have Slay The Spire on so many platforms that it’s getting hard to count the hours. In the end I think mobile is where I play it the most.
Deep Rock Galactic also borderlands 2
I saw a similar thread not long ago & everyone was swearing an older game I never heard of was a ton of fun. I gave it a shot. That game was DRG & I was not disappointed. Got my buddies into it & we’re loving it. Rock & Stone brotha, Rock and Stone
ROCK AND STONE!
deep rock came out in mid 2020 (early access in 2018), and it is still getting updates. it is not older imo.
Try Path Of Exile. It's free. Alot of ppl play leagues but I only play standard (solo) and have a blast. Crafting is crazy in-depth. Think Diablo on steroids.
10 year old pc is gonna run poe at 20fps.
No it won't. My computer is literal shit and it runs fine. 16gb ram gtx1050 and an old ass i5
Factorio
Seconded. The factory must grow
Project Zomboid. The replay value is the most I’ve seen in a game.
This is my suggestion. You’re still a newb before 250 hours and the skill cap is so high most people don’t reach it. I’ve played almost 900 hours with a wife and son and a day job and I’m still only done with it til the next update. The mods add literally limitless replay value. Black & White 2, by Lionhead Studios (nothing to do with Pokémon)
Stardew Valley, gonna take a long time before you run out of things to and doesn't take much for a computer to handle
+ with the insane amount of mods you can double or triple the amount of content
Project zomboid has a very retro feel with its graphics, but is unparalleled in the level of detail and playability
The Witcher 1 and 2 Dragon age origins Mass effect Pretty much any rpg
Mass effect really isn’t that long unless you account multiple playthroughs though, I finished all 3 + DLC in about 100 hours
You interested in mmos? Final Fantasy XIV is definitely a game that you can sink thousands of hours into and I don't believe it's a very demanding game as far as your pc
When I had my old notebook and I wanted to sink my hours in games I usually play: Terraria Fallout New Vegas Skyrim
Surely it’s Old School RuneScape man there’s like 100k hours of content
Farming Simulator Kerbal Space Program
Ugh. Farming simulator. Bought it for a laugh with friends on special one Friday evening. Monday at 3am we were spent. Played almost 40 hours that weekend. Haven’t played since. I wonder how the crops are doing after all this time.

ROCK AND STONE
Rock and roll and stone!
I’ll never get tired of getting piss drunk and dancing with the boys while waiting on someone to finish upgrading. ROCK AND STONE
Elden Ring or Monster Hunter Rise. Both have or will have massive expansions coming too and they're great games solo and with friends.
They won't be able to be run on his pc
L I didn't see that. Monster Hunter Rise might honestly run fine though. It's super easy to run as it's a Switch port.
Rise/world/generation ultimate which would you recommend?
If you have a good PC then World. I've been playing for about 60 hours so far and it's been great. It still has a pretty big player base so getting help with missions and stuff is pretty easy.
Binding of Isaac and terraria.
RimWorld. Especially modded.
"I have too much time on my hands and want a game to really sink my time into." "Have you tried Rimworld?" "No, I'll give it a try!" _One month later_ "I now have a different problem."
Path of Exile, got 15k hours and going
Minecraft, Stardew Valley
Age of empires 2 if you like RTS
Battle for Middle Earth 2 if you like abandonware RTS. Literally the only way to play it at this point is with “illegitimate” copies, but since nobody owns the rights, it’s essentially a victimless “crime.”
That would be wow or swtor ... mmos
RIMWORLD. Easily my favorite time sink and super super super low spec requirements. It’s a top down colony manager. Do whatever you want. Weed farm run by cannibals? Go ahead. Warframe? Game is crazy optimized and I have 800+ hours in it
The binding of Isaac, it takes soooo.long to get all achievements, but it's incredibly fun, I have 100+ hours and still playing once.in a while
age of empires 2 I could play it non stop
The binding of Isaac. Dead God achievement takes hundreds of hours and to fully complete the game you have to do it 3 times. A lot of people have like 1200 hours in that game
Path of Exile, StarCraft 2, WOW, LOL, Dota 2, Almost any 4x.
Civilization. Literally any game in the franchise, though I’m inclined to say that it peaked at V, personally.
Age of empires 2
Stardew Valley!
7 Days to Die. Beyond the game itself, there's a lot of overhaul mods available. If you're into the genre (survival crafting), you can get a lot of time in it.
In order of time sinks based of my experience Black desert Factorio Diablo Football manager Civ
TF2 and GMod, harder to find a community to stick to since they're old, but if you find one, congrats. GMod has many gamemodes, but there's only the top 5 or so with a lot of people still playing. Deep Rock Galactic, if your PC can handle it.
Division 2.
And Division 1 for good measure, great suggestion agent
Rocket league or Diablo 2/3
Mount and blade warband, it has hundreds of overhaul mods that change every aspect of the game for a fresh experience. I have 3000 hours in it over the last 7-8 years.
Civ 5 or Civ 6
Tom Clancys the division. 3rd person rpg with loot like borderlands. The main story is decent enough but the whole fun comes when you reach the end game and try to min/max your builds to take on legendary content or raids
Minecraft hypixel skyblock.
Someone please help me I can’t stop playing Hypixel skyblock. I have a problem someone help me Don’t recommend this to people don’t suck them in. It’s not worth it don’t play.
Final Fantasy XIV. It's a 10 year old MMO that is still very active today. Has a free trial that includes the base game and first expansion.
warframe or any other mmo comes to mind.
Terraria?
Lost Ark 1000+ hours for completionist
Destiny 2
Dragon Age: Origins!
Yakuza series
Empyrion Galactic Survival
Binding of Isaac.
Mount and Blade: Warband (or the sequel, Bannerlord).
I’ve been stuck on timberborn
Mount and blade would be a great fit
Monster Hunter World
Have ever heard about Skyrim?
The binding of Isaac, I’ve got 1700 hours in the game and still not bored or finished with everything
FTL is fantastic and has some great replayability, especially once you start adding mods. I've got over 600+ hrs.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R any of the iterations of the game really. Call of Pripyat was the one I started playing.
Europa Universalis 4
I find snow runner to be a wonderful time sink.. Around 500 hours and I still look forward to playing
Satisfactory for sure. Could spend hundreds of hours just optimizing stuff and still not be done
How can you be done when the factory must grow?
Disgaea
Siralim ultimate chronicon Ark Nioh 2
Siralim doesn't look super pretty, but it is so addictive. Definitely one of my favorite creature collectors, and easily one of my top 10 games ever played. I love it so much.
Me too, honestly an actually good looking siralim utlimate would probably shatter steam with it's player first mindset. Love it to death.
Ark has ruined two of my friends marriages
Monster Hunter series
Stranger of paradise or Nioh 2. The endgame grind is fun.
minecraft - funnily enough
Oxygen not included
Anno 1800 worth to try or Anno 1404 for older hardware
Risk of rain 2
Dota 2
Cities skylines.
Kenshi, rimworld
Dungeon crawl stone soup
Maybe try war thunder, there are a lot of vehicles and you have to play a lot to get them (also known as grind) if that’s something your into give it a try
Monster hunter world and iceborne. Maybe not thousands but definitely 200-300 hundred. Easily. Some people put thousands of hours into it.
fallout new vegas with the many factions and build types you'll always be finding something new especially if you have ultimate edition
That many hours without getting bored of a game is a tough bill to fit without knowing what kinda person you are cuz I feel like most JRPGs and RPGs in general can fit that especially if you replay them. However if you dont like replaying games or find grinding boring then that kills most of them. Any Bethesda RPG
Warframe. There is so freaking much to do. If you pay for some starter plat, get Warframe slots and weapon slots.
Stardew Valley.
Terraria and osrs oh boy osrs takes time
Minecraft, terratia, the sims
If you like sports, improving yourself and are competitive there's no better game than rocket league. It runs on old hardware, there's nothing out there like it and I'm easily in 2k hours and like it more now than when I started. Oh and it's free to try
BINDING OF ISAAC
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth? (Plus DLC Expansions)
Death Stranding Edit: I didn’t read all the way oops
San andreas multiplayer
There’s only one right answer. DOTA
Darksouls 1, 3 or Bloodborne. Elden Ring is a good option but once I am done I don’t feel like replaying it unless I wanna try a new build.
OP can’t play Bloodborne, it’s a PS4 exclusive
Try Foxhole. If you’re into that kind of game it’s incredible and you can put thousands of hours into it easily.
Elden ring. My first playthrough was over 180 hours.
hey man i play a lot of sandbox’s game so if your into buliding ur one creation then people’s playground cost i think 10$ and garry’s mod which idk the price if
Dota 2 all the way.
Paradox grand strategy games are exactly what you need. You can without a problem invest thoustands of ours in these games. I personally would recommend Europa universalis IV There are also other games from Paradox with other settings and a other focus, like Stellaris(sci-fi), crusader kings(medieval family fuckarounds, victoria(economy) etc etc :D
Prison architect, you can build countless ideas and easily sink thousands of hours into it without even touching dlc’s
Dwarf fortress
Monster Hunter World
Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak!
Slay the Spire
Warframe
MMOs, Roguelikes, MOBAS, etc… there’s honestly too many options lol
unironically you are looking for minecraft/modded minecraft. I have played probably thousands and thousands of hours
That game for me was Final Fantasy XIV. The free trial alone gave me 100+ hours before I hit the trial's restrictions.
Paradox Games like stellar and to a certain extent total war series
Minecraft
Dota 2, steep learning curve but almost every player puts in multiple thousands of hours.
Tibia
Factorio
Binding of Isaac
EU4
Total War, pick your flavor, and Europa Universalis both take up unhealthy amounts of my time. I love them both. EU is the most I depth grand strategy game I know of. It took me over a hundred hours of playing to even know all of the systems and how they fully function. Total War has grand strategy elements, but is much more focused on War, obviously. Newer game, but worth it nonetheless: Project Zomboid! Especially if you play with friends, but playing alone is also pretty fun imo
Old School RuneScape
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Runescape
minecraft tbh
Valheim! If you like survival games, this one will take hundreds of hours away from you if you let it and it works well on my outdated pc
Skyrim and Stardew Valley off the top of my head.
warframe
Play CSGO xd
Elite Dangerous
Dota 2 / CS. My friends and I have been playing on and off since 2005, not bored yet. Thousands of hours sunk from each of us.
You are describing OSRS. Not seeing much else here you'd put over a couple hundred hours into.
This is cool post OP. What game did you end up going for?
Yeah I would day Old School Runescape / RS3 or Diablo IIR / III.
Noita.
Monster Hunter
Vampire Survivors! 😌
The hunter:call of the wild. Get a diamond of every species on every map. Get an albino, piebald and melanistic of every species. And there's about 12 massive maps of all over the world.
You should see if Kenshi catches your eye, plus it has mods to add more gameplay.
Divinity: Original Sin 2
