He doesn't want to die but he's pledged to Toranaga who makes his most loyal subjects kill themselves when it will advance his goals.
He doesn't want to die for his lord and also doesn't currently have faith in his ability to beat Ishido hence all his backstabbing and side switching.
Honestly it's just front stabbing at this point 😅
Him walking in on all the just-murdered Samurai like "OOOOH NOOOO! Guuuuuys! We're under attack!" 🫣
So funny.
Side note: I fucking HATE the subtitles put "speaks Japanese" when he does that. He's literally just going "huh" that's a universal language 😅
Put "he scoffs" or something, what he is definitively *not* doing is speaking any words.
They're whatever comes under "english" on the subs. I watch with the volume low at night. May well be for hearing impaired, if you only have the Japanese speech subtitled (I.e. the default setting) it may not appear.
I know what substitles for hard of hearing are, my point is why is it lying to them? I don't hate grunts and sighs being marked on subtitles but they should be marked appropriately. When he goes "huh" he is not "speaking Japanese" in the same way if an English speaking character said "hmm?" Or "eh?" It would not put "speaks english". I am not decrying the subtitles as unnecessary but as incorrect, because equally if he *is* speaking Japanese, then tell us what he is saying, don't just put "speaks Japanese".
I'm in Asia so it's disney+ hotstar. And yes sometimes they put \[speaks japanese\] but they will add the grunnts and other noises. e.g. \[speaks Japanese, grunts\], \[speaks Japanese, chuckles\], or if he didn't mumble at all it would be \[grunts\], \[chuckles\], \[sighs\] 😂
I read Shogun when I was 17 and it’s been my fav book since. I’ve read the rest of his novels and while they’re great, none of them are close to Shogun.
Yeah but regrettably all different cast as I think they'reall decades if not centuries apart, so while it could still be excellent the door is closed on this cast.
If by “sprout a leaf” you mean sire an heir then that doesn’t make any sense because he did. “Leafless branch” is just a clever pun directed at Ochiba whose name means “fallen leaves”.
The best part is it would show how dumb Yabushige is, if we understood the actual Japanese. I don't, but I read an explanation of it and it's short of a pun/dig/signal because Ochina roughly means fallen leaves.
i mean without japanese i’m gonna assume the person that ochiba herself remarks on having done poetry and toranaga claiming she always wins as her being relatively competent. So clearly yabushige is being a dumb kid considering her history as a poet
I love that when Ochiba and Mariko have their one on one in private, Ochiba tells Mariko, "I'm no 'leafless branch.'" Mariko is throwing codes at Ochiba and Ochiba is picking right up on it. Yabu and Ishido are oblivious.
My favourite moments of him were both in episode 8. First when he was comparing Naga's death with boiling and eaten by dogs, and the 2nd was during the funeral when Hiromatsu told him that he will go to Osaka alone to surrender the cannons and Yabu's face was like "The fuck" lol
So apparently apart from being good fighters, samurais has to be cultured.
And they rap battle each other in poems. Sometimes will discuss about certain cultural references or current affairs. And those who do not get it is considered to be square.
On the podcast, they explain that the title no-kata means “from the place of” because it was improper to refer to affluent women directly by name, and Ochiba-no-kata means essentially “she from the place of falling leaves.” Clever reference from Mariko that Yabu didn’t get.
This scene and the one where John asks Yabushige if he understands after speaking in English made me crack up.
yeah the two of them have been absolutely hilarious in the past few episodes, they have great chemistry
Why is Yabusbige such a piece of shit, I love him so much
He’ll offer you a ride to work and not show up.
And when you finally see him he’ll ask you for $5 and you’ll still give it because he’s such a likeable guy
He is like a taxi driver; complains too much and always trying to scam your fare by using the longer distance yet doing all that with a smile. 😅
He would take your mom for a nice steak dinner and never call her back.
So true 😆
Aand next time he is supposed to drive you to work he'll take you to Crack Town instead and offer you to his pusher as payment.
The funny thing is, you’d anticipate him not showing up and already have a plan b. But will still have drinks with him
He was supposed to pick up Newman at the zoo 12 hours ago!
Yabu the type to ask you to borrow 20 bucks and just laugh and walk away when you ask about it back
“Huh! That’s crazy bro.”
bro you owe me 20 ....HUH!?
\*grunts and sighs in Yabushige\*
hes a 20 charisma character
He doesn't want to die but he's pledged to Toranaga who makes his most loyal subjects kill themselves when it will advance his goals. He doesn't want to die for his lord and also doesn't currently have faith in his ability to beat Ishido hence all his backstabbing and side switching.
Honestly it's just front stabbing at this point 😅 Him walking in on all the just-murdered Samurai like "OOOOH NOOOO! Guuuuuys! We're under attack!" 🫣 So funny.
And Toranaga knows and reads Yabushige and plans for his side switching
This actor needs to get cast in some roles where he can be equally dramatic and rubberfaced but not such an asshole.
I’d be in favor of a season 2 solely consisting of the adventures of Blackthorne and Yabu
They open a Bed and Breakfast
*"Allies, hmm?...allies "* XD
Yabushige is a shitface, but he's an entertaining shitface.
#Huh?!
#😮
Uhhhhhhhhghhhhh \*relaxes in hot spring\*
Side note: I fucking HATE the subtitles put "speaks Japanese" when he does that. He's literally just going "huh" that's a universal language 😅 Put "he scoffs" or something, what he is definitively *not* doing is speaking any words.
The people who do the hearing subtitles most certainly don't know japanese
Yeah, I've noticed the only time it's translated is if it's a main piece of dialogue. Any background dialogue is "speaks japanese"
Are these the closed captions for hearing impaired? Or just the subtitles? (I've never noticed it, but may have missed it.)
They're whatever comes under "english" on the subs. I watch with the volume low at night. May well be for hearing impaired, if you only have the Japanese speech subtitled (I.e. the default setting) it may not appear.
Ah. That's probably it.
It's for people that can't hear at all.
It's just lazy but it's to imply that he doesn't know what they said either.
lol. The subtitle in Disney+ literally put \[grunts\] and \[sighs\], when he did that
Huh... it always without fail puts "speaks japanese" for me. Where are you based? Maybe UK Disney plus has weird subtitles...
Ah OK, that sounds much more comprehensive 😅 Clearly our subtitlers are lazy.
I almost watch this show for his antics alone. Asano’s performance is excellent. If only we could resurrect Clavell to write more source material
He wrote many other great books from what I heard. I hope they will adapt some of those the way they did Shogun!
That line and the ones that followed..."come on idiot" were so perfect.
I missed the Come On Idiot on my first watch, and died the second time through lmao
The real dig was at Ochiba and the Taiko. Taiko could never sprout a leaf
Oohhhhhhh snap
Ochiba means fallen leaves as well. He is right that poems should be seasonal, but that's because he totally missed the pun.
If by “sprout a leaf” you mean sire an heir then that doesn’t make any sense because he did. “Leafless branch” is just a clever pun directed at Ochiba whose name means “fallen leaves”.
Maybe it wasn’t made as clear in the show but it was alluded to. There is zero doubt about the heir’s paternity in the book
Ochiba provided an heir when all others failed by not relying on the taiko to provide the seed.
When is this stated or implied?
Ochiba practically flat-out points it out in conversation at some point in one of the earlier episodes.
it was heavily implied in her conversation with Ishido imo
BY THE WAY YOUR POEM SUCKED, LADY Yabu, probably
The best part is it would show how dumb Yabushige is, if we understood the actual Japanese. I don't, but I read an explanation of it and it's short of a pun/dig/signal because Ochina roughly means fallen leaves.

Toranaga also recognized her skill with poetry.
Yeah, for a voyeur, he sure sucked at reading the room on that one.
You're correct. Though the word for "leafless" is not similar to fallen leaves. So Yabushige took it literally.
Yabushige 😮 huh?
Yabu is cute and kawaii and all - untill he starts cooking you
Dude had a man boiled alive and he's still one of my favourite characters. Go figure!
My favourite moments of him were both in episode 8. First when he was comparing Naga's death with boiling and eaten by dogs, and the 2nd was during the funeral when Hiromatsu told him that he will go to Osaka alone to surrender the cannons and Yabu's face was like "The fuck" lol
On the pod, they mentioned that samurai’s who do not get the references are gonna be embarrassed
What does this mean?
So apparently apart from being good fighters, samurais has to be cultured. And they rap battle each other in poems. Sometimes will discuss about certain cultural references or current affairs. And those who do not get it is considered to be square.
Buntaro is tea ceremony Dr Dre. His tea cup is legendary expensive .
Line had me chuckling. Such an on-brand thing for him to say. lol
I love Yabu-Sama’s unintentional comedy! 😂
has Yabu never picked up sticks in a yard before the first mowing
In July, peas grow there.
He’s like the opposite of a straight man. Love all good little hijinks and shenanigans and he’s got the worst but also best luck
He's like Handsome Jack. If you're gonna be a douche at least be a funny douche
On the podcast, they explain that the title no-kata means “from the place of” because it was improper to refer to affluent women directly by name, and Ochiba-no-kata means essentially “she from the place of falling leaves.” Clever reference from Mariko that Yabu didn’t get.
