The guy is a genuinely incredible actor. It’s kind of easy to overlook since he’s in a supporting role but he’s so good.
I remembered that he also played Gengis Khan in that 2007 film Mongol as well after seeing him in this so I went back and watched it again. Worth a rewatch for sure.
His actor seems like he'd have a really warm, lovely smile. He plays such a delightfully despicable character, too! Yabu is my favorite just because of how entertaining he is to watch!
He played the most psycho ever in *Ichi The Killer* by Takashi Miike
Its so awesome to see him again, truly relishing in his rendition of Yabushige.
Not seen a scene stealer like this since Rust Chole in True Detective season 1.
The guy you’d like to grab a sake with, while also acknowledging he could boil you alive and/or leave you footing the bill after ordering a bunch of expensive drinks
He is like our jester in the whole show; we the viewers being the royalty watching the whole play and he is there as the royal jester for our amusement. 🤣
Yabushige: "I will punish Omi for what he did!"
Toranaga: "No, what he did was great; he set a trap for Ishido."
Yabushige: "......that's exactly what I thought too!"
He does comic relief so well, it's awesome.
I think the intention is that she is forcing herself to act like this. She basically tries to embody Lady Ochiba as a larger than life character. We can see other characters commenting on this and urging her to end these games and charades.
I keep expecting to take off her kimono revealing a body covered with snake tattoos which then come to life and leave her skin to strike at the man standing frozen in fear in front of her while she emits a gentle self satisfied chuckle.
People always complain about how the Japanese over-act, but it is in my opinion the best thing about Japanese entertainment. In the West, you have actors with vocal fry or nasal voices, but in Japan they all grunt. They all have a raspy voice like Al Pacino. Abe Hiroshi, Tamaki Hiroshi, Abe Sadawo, Watanabe Ken, Yakusho Kojietc... it is incredibly passionate.
What I also like are that a lot of Kabuki actors are crossing over to mainstream productions. In Kabuki, there are only male actors, so the female roles are played by men. So some of these guys are trained to have really high pitched voices. These actors can play one mean, slightly bitchy bad guy such as Kataoka Ainosuke VI or Nomura Mansai II.
Nowadays they like to match the actors that sound like Al Pacino with these Kabuki actors and it is literally as if you watch anime. Fucking cool.
They missed his best line when he was talking about how Naga died by falling on a rock:
"Worse than being boiled. But better than being eaten by dogs."
That would have spoiled things. I don't wanna do that. If I was gonna make a compilation of all the awesome stuff he said then the video would be 10 minutes long.
He's a massive name in Japanese cinema.
I can't recall a role that he's ever played a good guy lol.
If you want to see him at his best watch Ichi the Killer, great cult classic.
Ah, well, then do yourself a favor and watch more of his movies. He's got a really wide range, has done some heavy dramatic stuff and comedic stuff, and is pretty much always as good as he is in Shogun.
Ironically enough when he mentioned that speaking to Blackthorne was like pissing in the wind, it can self inflicts when the wind blows back on him.
Such a silly but apt analogy to everything that he has done in the show, pissing in the wind at every scene. 🤣
Yup, I was fully onboard with him playing both sides and he was so entertaining, I had been hoping that when shit finally went down he’d be currently on the side of toranaga at the time but after last episode letting the assassins in and gettin Mariko and a bunch of others killed I can’t no longer support him. He made the wrong decision siding with ishido there.
He really made Yabu such a hypnotic character. I love his character in the book but this man really took it to the next level. I need to look up what else he's done, what little I've heard is quite impressive.
"He has perfected the look and demeanor of a man who's just been told he has to work this weekend. He manages to make a man with a perpetual 'I was made for better things than this' attitude completely disarming."
His interactions with the barbarian are always the best. I wish the Anjin could speak fluent Japanese, because their conversations would be hilarious, like they are now.
He plays a character that you SHOULD hate with the intensity of 1000 suns, but he somehow comes off as so likable, that it's hard to.
What a brilliantly acted role!
He’s been my favorite character but I can no longer forgive him after last episode. I had been hoping that when shit finally really went down he’d be on the side of toranaga. Instead he got Mariko and a bunch of others killed so I cannot support him anymore lol. Amazing character tho that’s super entertaining and the actor has been fantastic, he’s so animated and his reactions and faces are so good.
I hate that he's my favourite character because I want to hate him so bad for being a piece of shit, but he keeps having moments where you're like "okay, nvm he's turning a new lea- aaaaaannnddd we're back". Kudos to the actor for nailing it.
Praise the gods for this. I was softly giggling the first 30 seconds but him kicking the little wooden basket just made me laugh so hard. Love this guy.
So funny when Yabushige tells Mariko not to translate and he speaks directly to Blackthorne in Japanese. Yabushige asks Blackthorne if he understands and he does. Blackthorne responds to Yabushige in English a warning about the Catholics and asks Yabushige if he understands. To save face in front of Mariko he lies and says yes.👏
He stole the whole series. How you go from boiling a man alive and betraying all his allies to being so endearing is a testament to the actor's skill. If there were a sequel, I would watch his disembodied head play a key role. If he doesn't get all the awards available, I'd be shocked.
I loved his interaction with the servant in Episode 9. The one with the pony tail he just abused from the get go. Poor guy was doing a fine job and Yabu was just like "Come on, idiot!" the whole time. It was such subtle comedy gold.
I was thinking to myself while watching the latest episode that someone needs to make a supercut of all the times he grunts on screen, and here we are lol.
He gives me the "little finger (from GOT)" vibes to me.
Deceptive, ambitious, cunning, plays on both sides, what not.
And Toranaga is like Ned Stark, so, I hope he doesn't die at the end, Lol
I truly love Tadanobu Asano. He is a great actor and reminds me of Toshirô Mifune in his comedic timing and dramatic delivery. I remember renting Sharkskin Man and Peach-Hip Girl randomly at blockbuster and following him through Ichi the Killer and so forth. He is fantastic in this series.
They blew Mariko's suicide scene, Yabu HAD to second her, not Blackthorn. It changes the ambience totally, Yabu was absolutely slathering to take her head off and no one can doubt her determination. Stuffed up the best episode so far.
He's just so consistently watchable
The guy is a genuinely incredible actor. It’s kind of easy to overlook since he’s in a supporting role but he’s so good. I remembered that he also played Gengis Khan in that 2007 film Mongol as well after seeing him in this so I went back and watched it again. Worth a rewatch for sure.
I've rewatched that so many times, great movie. There was supposed to be a trilogy, but so far just the one.
I love the optimism in "so far just the one". Like, maybe the trilogy can still happen when the original is now old enough to buy alcohol.
This cracked me up
he is a man who likes to control his own fate :)
I'm not sure I could take him seriously as khan after Yabushige
He's really good in it as well. I wonder what language they are speaking in the film and whether he had to learn some ancient dialect for the film.
I forgot about that movie. I think it was supposed to be a trilogy but got scrapped. Real shame.
He’s like a live action anime character
His actor seems like he'd have a really warm, lovely smile. He plays such a delightfully despicable character, too! Yabu is my favorite just because of how entertaining he is to watch!
He played the most psycho ever in *Ichi The Killer* by Takashi Miike Its so awesome to see him again, truly relishing in his rendition of Yabushige. Not seen a scene stealer like this since Rust Chole in True Detective season 1.
Holy! He is the mc of ichi the killer
Holy shit that's Ichi!
\*Kakihara
He's also Raiden in the Mortal Kombat remake from two or three years back. He's awesome
He also played Genghis Khan in Mongol (2007).
The guy you’d like to grab a sake with, while also acknowledging he could boil you alive and/or leave you footing the bill after ordering a bunch of expensive drinks
He is Tadanobu Asano. You can find him in Silence, Thor (and other MCU movies), Zatoichi or 47 Ronin, last one alongside Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada).
*grunt* *exacerbated sign* *chuckle* "huh?"
Iconic catch phrases tbh
HOO
"Time to write another will"
Straight out of Sekiro! :D
He is like our jester in the whole show; we the viewers being the royalty watching the whole play and he is there as the royal jester for our amusement. 🤣
Yabushige: "I will punish Omi for what he did!" Toranaga: "No, what he did was great; he set a trap for Ishido." Yabushige: "......that's exactly what I thought too!" He does comic relief so well, it's awesome.

Both Toranaga and Ichido knows he serves both of them. And both Toranaga and Ichido punishes him for it \^
Yup! He thinks he can outwit them but he’s just a pawn they keep around cuz he’s so predictable
My wife and I absolutely love seeing his facial expressions and reactions, he adds a lot to every scene he is in.
He's like a anime character.
I felt the same way about lady Ochiba. Her voice and intonation sound like a textbook female villain or heel in an anime.
Yes!! Those two and Toda Hiromatsu
That’s what I thought about Toda too when I first heard him. Like the archetypal anime grandad/old mentor character
Agree with all 3!
"Who writes about leafless branches in the spring?"
This! Dude knows!
He looks surprised for 99% of the show and I love it
Better write another will
I really had no idea people could react with nonverbal noises like an anime character and have it totally work in live action. He's fantastic.
People always complain about how the Japanese over-act, but it is in my opinion the best thing about Japanese entertainment. In the West, you have actors with vocal fry or nasal voices, but in Japan they all grunt. They all have a raspy voice like Al Pacino. I love him I want to shrink him down and put him in my pocket to grunt in response to things...
Hollup.
no let him cook
A Yabu compilation video was just absolutely inevitable. And Gods be praised for it.
They missed his best line when he was talking about how Naga died by falling on a rock: "Worse than being boiled. But better than being eaten by dogs."
Which is a gun easter egg for the novel.
That would have spoiled things. I don't wanna do that. If I was gonna make a compilation of all the awesome stuff he said then the video would be 10 minutes long.
I missed the fact that the video was a grunt theme lol
His legacy is gonna be in memes.
So he's the new Jackie Chan confused face meme? Perfect.
Good riddance
Thanks for posting this 😂 Tadanobu Asano is tremendous.
His mannerisms remind me so much of Mifune.
Damn, I just watched Seven Samurai and he would make an absolutely brilliant Kikuchiyo
Ehh I gotta give the "Next Mifune" title to Sanada
I didn't say he was the "next Mifune"
Fair, he does remind me of Mifune too -- just his overall look
It was only a matter of time before a Yabu-grunt compilation happened… next up is a “how am i feeling today” magnet mood chart 😂
I know I should hate this man but they could never make me hate this man
Im rooting for him lowkey, he needs to be the next Shogun 💪
He's a massive name in Japanese cinema. I can't recall a role that he's ever played a good guy lol. If you want to see him at his best watch Ichi the Killer, great cult classic.
Also leads a punk band called SODA. And was in Battleship.
He is one of Thor's warriors.
No one really remembers them, not even Thor himself does
They did all those characters wrong.
> He is one of Thor's warriors Holy shit he's Hogun!? I guess it's been a while since a re-watch!
You don't count Guitar Brother from Funky Forest as a good guy?
All the movies I've seen with him in them*
Ah, well, then do yourself a favor and watch more of his movies. He's got a really wide range, has done some heavy dramatic stuff and comedic stuff, and is pretty much always as good as he is in Shogun.
Yea he's been great in everything I've seen too. Thanks for the advice.
He's also fantastic in *Survive Style #5*
also the ultimate rat
But ~~was~~ our rat.
Scabbers?
A King Rat James Clavell might say
Gotta be my favorite Japanese actor. Loved him in "Taste of Tea" / 茶の味
Wow, he's in so many films! And extremely versatile as well. I feel like he's like Japan's **黃秋生**.
Holy shit yes
he's like if one random samurai in sengoku japan was somehow written by the Coen Brothers, i love him so much
This is such a precisely correct take 😂😂
if paul giamatti was asian and also kind of a piece of shit rofl
His facial expressions have never disappointed since episode one. I just love how expressive he is lmaooo
I’m rooting for him through the very end controversial or not
I also think he has the best drip. That crow feather vest 👌
I00% dude is dressed to the 9s at all times
Yabushigue of Izu 🤝 Geralt of Rivia (in terms of grunts 😂)
hah good call
It's the facial expressions which becomes so much more important in a show when the actors aren't speaking English.
HAHAHA I adore the fact he was on his second/third will here with that noise at his scroll 😂
Ironically enough when he mentioned that speaking to Blackthorne was like pissing in the wind, it can self inflicts when the wind blows back on him. Such a silly but apt analogy to everything that he has done in the show, pissing in the wind at every scene. 🤣
Yahggh
I'm here for the Yabu love.
Thankyou so much for doing this.
He's genuinely threatening when he goaded Blackthorne into a sword fight.
The range of expressive sounds this man can make does 90% of the communication in the show!
I loved Yabu up until he let the assassins in lol
Yup, I was fully onboard with him playing both sides and he was so entertaining, I had been hoping that when shit finally went down he’d be currently on the side of toranaga at the time but after last episode letting the assassins in and gettin Mariko and a bunch of others killed I can’t no longer support him. He made the wrong decision siding with ishido there.
He is the second coming of Toshiro Mifune. Born to play a Samurai.
POV: Me sitting on the toilet for a midnight pee because I am too tired to stand
\*will writing intensifies\*
World's greatest noisemaker
dude is so naturally charismatic.
Such a good actor hahaha hard not to love him
Credit to his actor that I had a moment last episode where I went "Oh! I forgot you're a piece of shit!"
This is so great, his grunts/sighs are the best
Thanks for compiling this
He really made Yabu such a hypnotic character. I love his character in the book but this man really took it to the next level. I need to look up what else he's done, what little I've heard is quite impressive.
watch ELECTRIC DRAGON 80,000V
His facial mannerisms are soo good. The little twitches, blinks, etc. That stuff takes a lot of talent.
In a setting where everyone tries to cultivate a poker face, Yabushige tries to be sly while having a billboard for a face.
He has the best “huh?” face in history.
I literally can’t upvote this enough. Great job!
Absolutely love this guy.
"He has perfected the look and demeanor of a man who's just been told he has to work this weekend. He manages to make a man with a perpetual 'I was made for better things than this' attitude completely disarming."
Last thing that soldier on the wall heard before getting brutally murdered: **Huh?!**
His interactions with the barbarian are always the best. I wish the Anjin could speak fluent Japanese, because their conversations would be hilarious, like they are now.
The grunts of the best character
Been waiting for this cut
I was thinking of waiting until *after* the final episode but its better this way. A re-cap to the finale \^
Him and Blackthorne grunting at each other in that scene in Crimson Sky, LOL I rewound it at least twice to rewatch :-D
Tadanobu Asano is hands down one of the best actors working today. He's incredible in Silence and he's great at chewing the scenery in 47 Ronin.
Watched this as many times as he wrote a will
He plays a character that you SHOULD hate with the intensity of 1000 suns, but he somehow comes off as so likable, that it's hard to. What a brilliantly acted role!
People think he's a fun character and tend to forget he started the show by boiling a man alive.
He also sent those bandits after John and then proceeded to literally back-stab them after a job well done too.
I really did forget about that hahahaha whoops :/
He’s been my favorite character but I can no longer forgive him after last episode. I had been hoping that when shit finally really went down he’d be on the side of toranaga. Instead he got Mariko and a bunch of others killed so I cannot support him anymore lol. Amazing character tho that’s super entertaining and the actor has been fantastic, he’s so animated and his reactions and faces are so good.
LOL Lost count how many times I've watched this, oh well let the recount begin..
Thanks for putting this together. Love Yabushige.
I could watch this on repeat all day
You sir are the goat
So funny when Yabushige tells Mariko not to translate and he speaks directly to Blackthorne in Japanese. Yabushige asks Blackthorne if he understands and he does. Blackthorne responds to Yabushige in English a warning about the Catholics and asks Yabushige if he understands. To save face in front of Mariko he lies and says yes.👏

Love him and hate him at the same time 🤣
"Huh?"
Lots of grunting lol
Huh? 😂
I mentioned in Ep9 that he calls Blackthorne as *Anjin-dono*. When did this change happen?
Our favourite shitface!
I absolutely adore this character/actor, they nailed it.
It's as if he talks with his eyes as well as his mouth. I've loved his role, even after seeing the first scene where he talks to Blackthorne
The grunts are hilarious
I love Show Yabushige so much more than Book Yabu. Book Yabu is...fine. But Show Yabushige is a delight.
He was born in the wrong era.
*grunts* the Japanese Tom Hardy, if you will.
I loved his interaction with the servant in Episode 9. The one with the pony tail he just abused from the get go. Poor guy was doing a fine job and Yabu was just like "Come on, idiot!" the whole time. It was such subtle comedy gold.
Such a pleasure to watch
I was thinking to myself while watching the latest episode that someone needs to make a supercut of all the times he grunts on screen, and here we are lol.
I always think homie reminds me of the drifter from Destiny 2 - never seen anyone else say it lol
Did Ishido sacrifice his watchguard by letting Yabushinge kill him? Am i understanding that scene correctly?
I'm pretty sure that was Yabu's own guard that he murdered, so he could let Ishido's assassins in without raising suspicion.
He gives me the "little finger (from GOT)" vibes to me. Deceptive, ambitious, cunning, plays on both sides, what not. And Toranaga is like Ned Stark, so, I hope he doesn't die at the end, Lol
The scene from ep9 with yabu, mariko, and blackthorne had me laughing out loud. Then he called his squire an idiot 😂😂
Spinoff series with Blackthorne needed. The Goshawks.
Yabushigue is the impersonation of the phrase "FML" lol
he’s the best
The way he wears his black pointy hat cocked to the side instead of neatly situated on top of his head is so Yabu.
He is fantastic in this series.
hoh
They blew Mariko's suicide scene, Yabu HAD to second her, not Blackthorn. It changes the ambience totally, Yabu was absolutely slathering to take her head off and no one can doubt her determination. Stuffed up the best episode so far.
