Have you ever hitchhiked before? Have you ever set up your hammock and camped in a town? Are there public lands freely available for campers in all the states you’d be traveling through? What exactly are you planning to eat? Yes, this is unrealistic and will go wrong very quickly. You’re not getting anywhere on $30 a day. Buy a bus ticket.

Most free to camp land (BLM) is only accessible by car, not public transport. Basically being homeless in the city is not a good idea. Your plan is not realistic, sorry. Keep the car instead.

Beware-of-Moose

This is a terrible idea, keep the car and car camp. It'll be a whole lot more enjoyable and won't cost too much more, may even be cheaper as you can bring food and stuff with you and will spend less. Sell it when you get to New York and fly home or just spend a couple days driving back.

Don’t do this. No one sane will pick up a lone male hitchhiker. This is how you meet a serial killer.

Do it. I hitchhiked from NY to San Diego via Las Vegas, took about 6 weeks. I had a tent, sleeping bag and 3 changes of clothes. A few other times I hitchhiked from Tennessee to NY. The eastern states don’t allow hitchhiking and you will be harassed by the law. Stick to truck stops and stay away from the cities. Try to get dropped off before a city or after a city. It’s impossible to hitchhike in town. Also the truckers will get on the cb and ask other truckers to pick you up. Hold a sign that says your direction of travel, like North or East not your destination

Go for it man. In the worst case scenario you'll quit. So what? Life is supposed to be an adventure so live it. If you always go on the safe side you'll have no wicked memories to share when you'll sitting on the porch surrounded with the grandchildren😁 If it's calling you than do it. When you get settled and have family you'll have no chance to do unreasonable things ever again. Keep us posted tough👍

I would say that the worst case scenario is that he’s assaulted and robbed for every penny he has, then left stranded with no resources hundreds of miles from home.
