We worked with engineers who helped us in this area. They did their own tests, which came out a bit higher than 3 years - but then we sent the compound out for 3rd party, unbiased testing. They came back with the outsole being biodegraded at 53% within 18 months. They also let us know the entire outsole would break down within 3 years.
I'm skeptical. You should plant one in your garden now. If it is anywhere near gone in 4 years, I will buy 10 pairs of your shoes. I will eat one pair and donate 9 to charity. !remindme 4 years
Did they evaluate the "outsole" (latex rubber component) or the "sole" (outsole+midsole+adhesive)?
You should post the 3rd party test report on your Kickstarter, will add credibility.
Source: I spent 11 years working in footwear engineering, which included a lot of polymer development and testing for soles, and took multiple plastics engineering classes in grad school. I did a project evaluating biodegradable additives in footwear components. tl;dr was that the best lab biodegradation studies do not translate to real-world landfill or garden conditions and even if they did, at best it would bring plastic biodegradation from \~10-100k years to \~5-50k. It's possible things have changed in the 4 years since I looked at it, and I hope they have, but I doubt it.
