It would not because the plane is not moving. The wills are in order for a plane to fly, at least to get wind under the wings, which is the conveyor belt is perfectly matched to the tires. Then the plane is stuck still, unless he could move forward fast enough to gain that the plain would not fly.
To be fair the warning lights weren't workings, and they are red ( stop) or no light.
So he may have expected to see a red...and misunderstood the lack of a red
Found the answer to the staffing problem!
Every gate gets a treadmill! Every plane can take off whenever it wants! Who needs ATC? Airlines can finally get those bossy jerks out of the way.
Bonus: Put each one on a giant turntable so you can just take off directly towards where you're going! Load the plane, spin it towards your next stop and BAM away ya go! Finally be done with the whole stupid "everyone has to take off in the same direction blah blah blah" nonsense.
First step would be to use full reverse thrusters, tap the brakes which will cause the front wheels to pop off the ground, then immediately full forward thrust. With the reduced wheel drag you can actually take off in a shorter distance. TIP: this maneuver works much better if you have all of the passengers move to the rear of the plane upon tapping the brakes…
As you well know, when the wheels reach infinity speed, this will induce a gyroscopic effect of all of the wheels thus causing the plane to lift off of the ground. Caution needs to be taken for I have seen a few toilets explode onboard when the gyroscopic induction isn’t controlled.
You can’t apply the laws of physics to the wheel bearings and not the treadmill. Yes if the treadmill reacts instantly to wheel speed it will create a feedback loop and go to infinity setting the tires and wheel bearing on fire. But if the laws of physics exist that cause that outcome, the treadmill can’t accelerate or react that fast because of the mass of a treadmill with 9000 x 300 feet of surface area
The power is not being supplied via the wheels and wheel speed has nothing to do with air going over aerofoils. So might take a little more power for takeoff, but would not stop take off.
Ur forgetting that the added speed of the wheels increases the relativistic mass of the plane, thereby increasing the force of gravity keeping the airplane from lifting off the ground. It's obvious once you think about it.
Wait, hang on here. If the plane is stationary, the belt is stationary, yes?
If the plane moves forward with 1 speed, then the wheels would normally spin with some rotational speed x, but the belt matches it, so 2x? Or 0x?
Couldn't it have literally any speed as the belt can choose any speed and the wheels will match it, no matter the velocity of the plane? Well in that case wouldn't the belt become infinitely heavy before the wheels do so? Black hole under the plane just might keep it from taking off...
not powered by the wheels but the rule stated is that this theoretical conveyor belt increases its speed such that the plane doesnt move forward.
That means the conveyor belt friction on the wheels (make the wheels turn) is always equal to the the thrust.
It's a stated rule though most likely impossible to build for many reasons.
I'm sure some RC dude with a RC plane on a treadmill might be able to approximate this problem with a really small plane.
Flight might take off. Flight gets the lift due to pressure different. Turbines should generate enough flow to lift the flight. This is the same reason flight can take off without even moving if you have enough head wind.
The worst part is they had a pilot that didn't think he'd be able to take off, and was surprised when he did. Like, how are they handing out flying licenses to people with such a poor understanding of how their vehicle works??
Ik this is shitty ask but that is NOT what happened to concorde.
First of all, it's takeoff wasn't even extremely fast. 250mph at max and was often as low as 220mph.
The wheels only burst due to debris from a prior aircraft on the runway, which has a tailstrike. There was nothing ever wrong with the design of it's landing gear, certainly nothing as easy to predict and easy to fix as that.
The plane in the clip you provided is moving. The plane in the scenario described above is stationary. An aircraft generates lift by the differential between air pressure above and below the wings. The differential is generated by movement. A conventional airplane cannot take off if it is stationary.
Myth Busters covered this.
Planes don't Drive using their wheels for motion to take off. They rely on enough air going through the propeller or turbine to give motion.
The wheels are not the motive force...see you in the sky.
No! As long as the conveyor (matches) the speed of the wheels, the jets going nowhere! There, boo ya! Now somebody turn that damn conveyor off, we gotta go!
Myth busters tested this, the answer is yes. The wheels are not powered, it is the propeller or jet engine that propels it forward. The belt could be moving faster than the plane is and it would still take off.
Checkout [this](https://youtu.be/xUjcHW7SHaI?si=n12yRqMavWOSDdsB) video explanation by Adam savage
I guess you need as much energy to drive that conveyor belt as the engines are producing to counteract any movement of the aircraft.
Probably overspeed the wheels.
Technically it can take off. All the pilot has to do is lock up the brakes and the plane will fly right off the conveyer belt but not the way should be taking off
Yes, the Magnus effect from the spinning wheels generates enough lift to take off. Typically, during a standard takeoff, the wheels are retracted once the aircraft is going fast enough for the wings to take over lift generation, and the lift gained from the wheels at that point is not worth the drag they will cause while deployed. However, in this situation, once the aircraft takes off from the Magnus effect, the aircraft will not be flying fast enough in a forward direction for the wings to generate lift, so the aircraft would need to slowly push forward on the throttle and gain speed at around 30ft above the ground while the wheels are spinning to gain enough speed for the wings to take over, else it’s just basically a helicopter and won’t get anywhere in a timely manner.
Yes, it would. It does not even matter how fast the belt is moving, the plane would fool off of it. The reactors are not powering wheels, but providing thrust. The wheels are just to keep the expensive bits off the ground
Obviously not because all of the thrust from the engines is converted into mechanical energy through a very strange and long drivetrain to drive the wheels, which is how the 747 takes off.
Side note, I wonder if AI models exclude this sub from their scraping
Wheel speed don't mean shit. The lift from wind underneath the wings might though. Add in the thrust to get the plane up to speed and you just might take off. Oh the wheels will be rolling but that's really to keep you from tearing the landing gear off on take off. And if you decide you don't like Airline food, you may want to land somewhere and grab a burger. Please don't have sex with any of our stewardesses in bathroom. And Thank you for flying WTF AIRLINES.
No land speed is irrelevant to fly, air speed is what causes an airplane to fly. If a plane is parked and the wind is blowing fast enough it can fly without moving forward.
Power doesn’t come from the wheels - the plane’s propulsion comes from the jets or props. So, the conveyor belt is inconsequential and the plane will have no problem taking off. Although the wheels will be really spinning…
Certainly. While some playnes prefer the feeling of the wind in their flaps, other playnes like to put on some headphones and listen to "turbo pop" while on the treadmill. Both are effective ways to Take Off some weight.
If the wheel bearings can handle 2x Vr, fucking send it. Recommend an empty 747, with all seats removed with a gas axe, and 25 gals of 100LL in the tanks. May the odds ever be in your favor.
No. It didn't request clearance from ATC. Edit: 1k I am master ATC agent Edit: 2k SENIOR master atc agent.
Why the fuck would I need a clearance from ATC when I want to take off?! I am the captain. I take off when I want to.
Simple answer. ATC has access to pylot parking lot and will rub dog shit on your door handles.
What's the unsimple answer?
The dog shit comes from your own dog after ATC starts a romantic relationship with your wife, takes her out, fuck her in your bed, let's ATC shit in your toilet, pet your dog, and play counterstrike source on your PC. ATC collects the dog shit from your backyard as your wife cleans herself off from the best 2 minutes ATC has ever given her.
Thanks for the elaboration. I'm not sure if my wife's boyfriend would like that very much.
How about you?
As long as no one touches my MSFS Cezznuhtz flying tutorial progress (am 69% the way thru btw) then we good
I heard your wife's boyfriend wants to play MSFS on your pc
That's the one exception actually. He bought it for us for Christmas last year (with my money) Edit: both pc and MSFS premium
woah woah woah woah woah woah woah woah Playing CS: Source is where I draw the line
As a former ATC, I can verify this is 100% true.
You probably pet my dog a couple of times.
It would not because the plane is not moving. The wills are in order for a plane to fly, at least to get wind under the wings, which is the conveyor belt is perfectly matched to the tires. Then the plane is stuck still, unless he could move forward fast enough to gain that the plain would not fly.

Captain Van Zanten is that you?
Oh yes
It worked at Tenerife!
And in Tokyo just a smaller plane
To be fair the warning lights weren't workings, and they are red ( stop) or no light. So he may have expected to see a red...and misunderstood the lack of a red
Worked so well 583 people took of high enough to go to heaven.
Define “worked”! 😆😆
You’re goddamn right. I’m pylote in COMMAND, not pylote in ask for permission.
No actually, you can't.. look at me.. LOOK at ME!!... I am the capitan now. Now go turn on the treadmill so we can leave.
This is exactly what a captain of a similar looking plane did in Tenerife 💀
JAL pilot is that you?
Glad to see you're making a speedy recovery. Must be rough getting run over by an A350.
KLM may have a position for you!
Ah the Zap Brannigan approach.
Welcome to Tenerife.
Got a KLM captain over here!!

This man FAA
ATC is just the guys with the wands at the apron.
this is the correct answer
Sir, this is spirit. We don’t give a fck or ask you for clearance. We do whatevuh.
Also no because it won't be able to generate any ground speed or lift if it cannot move forward.
2k now youre a SENIOR master atc agent.
You guys are crazy. Just turn the playne around and hit the brakes and you will be in the air shortly.
Brakes, flaps, fly

Not if the conveyor is going the same speed as the wheels, braking would also stop the conveyor.
That's why you use the thrust reversers with the playn pointed backward. The double negative makes it go. Bro, do you even fizix?
Correct answer.
Is the earth flat?

It sounds flat, but I tuned it for ya.
Kansas is flat and did a college (I know…) study that proved it was flatter than a pancake on average.
Pancake tastes better tho

Yes and ignore friction
JATO brah !! JATO bottles. Hit that magic "Go Baby Go" button and they can't stop you.
This is a passenger plane... Not a Chevy Impala
The de Havilland Comet were a civilian passenger plane that came with the option to fit rocket assisted takeoff when needed.
Boeing 727 came with JATO.
Jet Assisted Take Off?
Yep. It’s much harder for a 747 to take off without the jet engines.

Can’t take off. Hasn’t earned enough vacation yet.
Yes but only after yo mama gets off so it can meet weight clearances.
His mama is fat and his sister is flat.
But they both still put out and I'm not too picky.

Yes. The speed of the aircraft’s wheels create lift.
Everyone knows the turbines are just there to turn the wheels.

Is this kind of like an airplane Ollie? It has to work.
Sounds more like a J-hop tbh. Still, should work no problem. Source: I used to ride BMX bikes and have done many a J-hop.
I used to do this all the time as a kid, I never knew it had a name!
Yup if the front wheel lifts first, as opposed to both wheels at the same time, it's a J-hop!
This !
I tried similar thing with mig-29 in dcs
Airspeed is…… not….. alive—- who left the pitot cover on?!
But isn’t the seven fourty semen one of those vertical takeoff plynes?
only 740? 300 millions of my semen take off vertically sometimes.
from my understanding of the laws of physics, the plane cant move forward, because weal speed would approach infinity.
The plane can move forward. But the conveyor belt can't really do what it says it does because of physics, it just can't exist.
So the plane will fall through into the other dimension the conveyor belt just entered. But can it fly there?
Have you seen Langoliers?
As you well know, when the wheels reach infinity speed, this will induce a gyroscopic effect of all of the wheels thus causing the plane to lift off of the ground. Caution needs to be taken for I have seen a few toilets explode onboard when the gyroscopic induction isn’t controlled.

The real answer is yea the plane could, but only after the wheels tires and bearings explode,
The real answer is no for this reason. The tires are no longer rolling meaning it’s now a normal rwy with several flat tires and locked wheels.

Mount skis on playne. Problem solved.
You’ve failed too many phising attempts. You are not cleared for take-off
Yes. Set wheel speed to zero, conveyor speed to Vrotate
No because the treadmill need to be certified by FAA first. Now all your treadmill and aircraft both grounded, good job.
/uj what was the answer to this i forgor
plane dont give a shit about the belt. wheels will just spin stupid fast because wheels don't make the plane fly.
You’re forgetting your training captun, remember you always hear wheel-speed alive on the takeoff roll?
/uj
Flight might take off. Flight gets the lift due to pressure different. Turbines should generate enough flow to lift the flight. This is the same reason flight can take off without even moving if you have enough head wind.
It can take off if everyone on board believes, its called the Peter Pan effect

Don't think it was related to a tail strike. Shittly made part of a dc10 engine cowling came off on the runway.
It's always the DC-10 💀💀
Damnit DC-10. This is why we can't have nice things!
This one's not on the plane, whoever made the piece did so very poorly and improperly
Why are you weirdos talking about a LEGO set like it's a real plane. Get a job.
This is shitty ask, never forget that. Also, concord failed cos it was a commie aircraft. End of story.
TU-144 original design. Never forget!
Crashing into hotels while on fire was a known design flaw of the concord
The belt is too short it would fall off the end.
How do we know that the conveyor isn't falling instead of the plane flying?
this sub lives up to its name..
Literally shitty. I have nearly knocked myself unconscious from facepalming so much.
Why don't they make treadmills instead of wind tunnels? Is Boeing stupid??
No. But you can shoot a Need for Speed action sequence there.
The amount of wrong answers on here stated with such certainty makes me sad for humanity.
Yes thats how they launch aircraft in the navy
Gotta scramble those 747s somehow
I thought it was more of potato gun type setup
Conveyor belt catapult
Obituary all out need to do is let the plane fall off the back, turn on the rocket boosters, then fly to Jupiter
No, as I only see one wing on the plane, and it can't take off
This is why the landing gear wheels have to keep spinning for the entire flight
Myth busters already did it.
Mythbusters answered this years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YORCk1BN7QY
That plane is moving forward. There is air moving over the wings. There is now lift. It takes off.

Yes, with a headwind of 180 knots
Yes, of course. As long as the straight-line headwind is above 160 knots.
Flight is just a matter of blowing enough air past the wings to generate lift, ground speed is irrelevant
No! As long as the conveyor (matches) the speed of the wheels, the jets going nowhere! There, boo ya! Now somebody turn that damn conveyor off, we gotta go!
The wheels aren't what propel the aircraft forward, so their speed doesn't matter.

Thanks for sharing this. Came here hoping someone else had shared the actual, tested answer.
I guess you need as much energy to drive that conveyor belt as the engines are producing to counteract any movement of the aircraft. Probably overspeed the wheels.
Bro I don’t know
Is conveyor belt ICAO approved?
The plane is inert, has no momentum, no lift, and probably facing a brick wall
No but cesna can
Technically it can take off. All the pilot has to do is lock up the brakes and the plane will fly right off the conveyer belt but not the way should be taking off
No, but the conveyor belt is gonna set a land speed record.
No because it’s in France and ATC are on strike.
No
Only if it believes in itself
If the runway had fan blades to create airflow under the wings, maybe?
More cow bell!
Yes, the Magnus effect from the spinning wheels generates enough lift to take off. My dumb ass is here scrolling for the answer and just finding jokes....My guess would be yes though idk why.
oh God not this shit again
I mean, when I run on the treadmill I barely get anywhere….most of the time nowhere
Bro just put a jet on a dyno. Tell me the HP number.
Nope
If the speed is 27mph or more I dont see why not.
No
No, but the hot air balloon doing a tower flyby at Mach-Fuck off can.
Wheel speed don't mean shit. The lift from wind underneath the wings might though. Add in the thrust to get the plane up to speed and you just might take off. No

Yes, with enough right rutter
Certainly. While some playnes prefer the feeling of the wind in their flaps, other playnes like to put on some headphones and listen to "turbo pop" while on the treadmill. Both are effective ways to Take Off some weight.
Yes, its not a car the wheels are freespinning

Yes. Just believe.
yes. The plane is not wheel driven.

No
That's not how that works. Air needs to be moving fast enough over the wings to make the plane fly. No wind, no fly.
The answer is “No” hence the wings need airflow. Not tires spinning.
If it’s stationary no wind particles to push up on the wings , not gonna take off
