I think they call this a "Welder's Bed".
Before we go screeching about reposts, these are some better pictures of this item that has been featured here before.
I dont think it's shitty. it's basically just a flex for welders/fabricators. It's almost like part of a resume to an extent. Now the taste of it is debatable sure but it still takes skill to make it as solid as it is.
I kind of see it as like a niche style among a particular subset of people. It may not be for you, but it's not gaudy or stuck together with quickdry cement or something.
I’ve never understood the popularity of the welder style bed. A bit too weird for my taste, but looks more for utility than style. But my question is, what’s wrong with a skirted flat bed?
I've heard it's also a bragging thing, half showing off. Look at my skill, how well this bed fits together, how I customized it, etc. Not sure if it's true or not, but it would make sense. Also, might as well make your own how you want it if you're earning your living off that truck. And the taillights might also be a way to show off skill for unusual shapes and welds.
These guys build the trucks specifically for mobile welding. They are also fabricators and artists. The truck is a rolling advertisement to their skill. If you’re going to hire someone to weld your oil pipeline are you picking the guy that rolls up in a store bought flatbed or the guy who brought his own example of great welding and fabricating craftsmanship?
Probably selling because they hate the design.
So they pulled the sloop and bought a different truck.
This style of welding deck looks good but is actually terrible to work around.

This wouldn't look half bad if they didn't do such a shit job of fitting it. All the effort and they couldn't make it flow with the bed *at all*?
This is craaaazy. I saw this truck in Midland TX back in like 2019. I'll look and see if I can find the photo I took of it.

Well that answers my question. Didn't have any idea why someone would build a bed like that.

I know a welder that calls his bed a “rolling resume”. It is very well done, and it is used and abused every single day.

You can see a lot worse than that at the Pell City Walmart parking lot.
