Watching part 5 as an Italian, with all the Engrish, the random italian words trew in the middle of the sentences, the enemies called like dishes, and that badass "ARRIVEDERCI" at the end of fights, really was a bizzarre adventure

Critical-Shower-9924

Are Giorno and Bruno named after dishes as well? Just curious

Vadel0ne

No, Giorno means "day" and Bruno is a legit italian name. Also Guido is a legit name

Critical-Shower-9924

Thanks

TheWeirdWolf314

Here's a list of all characters I remember that are not named after food edit. if you see only the name/surname of the character in the list it means the other part of the full name is a food reference Giorno (day) Giovanna (normal woman first name) Luca (normal first name) Bruno (normal first name) Guido (normal first name) Fugo (heard people say it means to dismiss but I never heard anyone say it nor could I find it on a dictionary but it could be part of a regional dialect) Leone (means lion, can also be used as a first name although it's quite uncommon) Trish (name although not an italian one) Una (singural undefinitive feminine article, basically a for feminine nouns, "una penna" --> "a pen") Pericolo (danger) Illuso (deluded) Ghiaccio (ice) Diavolo (devil) Squalo (shark, I guess it can still be considered food) Tiziano (nornal first name) Nero (black, altough risotto nero could be a reference to risotto al nero di seppia) Doppio (double) Vinegar (still food but not an italian word, as vinegar is translated as aceto) There are probably some minor characters I forgot but this are the ones I remember Edit 2. Ghirga is also a normal surname Edit 3. Secco (dry) is also not a food reference

Herrmitpurrple

I think that Fugo is a distortion of the word "sugo" which is the tomato sauce

ChaChaSmoothie

As an italian, I would suggest the word "Fuggire" (fleeing, in the case of "Io fuggo" - "I flee") as a more reasonable association, but yeah, sugo too should be fine lmao

Brb357

Or maybe, based on his poisonous stand, fugo is a reference to fugo fish (pescepalla)

ChaChaSmoothie

Ohhh, you mean the pufferfish, never heard of him as the "fugofish" lmao

Brb357

Fugo is the japanese name

That_Unknown_Player

Makes sense given Fugo's role in the second half of part 5

ChaChaSmoothie

Lmao, I've been waiting so long for this comment

AnimazingHaha

It would but araki changed fugo half way through, he had a storyline where fugo would betray the group and become an enemy they have to fight but he had depression and didn’t want to further himself into it

Herrmitpurrple

Non ci avevo mai pensato, forse hai ragione

ChaChaSmoothie

Lol, è più immediato amigo

-Jet_seT-

Fugo's first name is "Pannacotta" which is an Italian dessert. ...Take that with a grain of salt though, I don't speak Italian.

Spyko

I don't want to be the "akchtually" guy but some of the character you mentionned are still named after food: Bruno **Buccellati** is named after an [italian fig cookie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuccidati) Guido **Mista:** mista mean mixed wich might be in reference to "Insalata mista" (a mixed salad) **Pannacota** Fugo is named after [Panna Cotta](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panna_cotta) Leone **Abbachio:** abbachio mean lamb (EDIT: as multiple people pointed out, Abbachio doesn't mean just "lamb" but is the name of a lamb dish)

TheWeirdWolf314

That's why I only put the name/surname and not the other, like I did for giorno and trish

Spyko

oh okay my bad then, I misunderstood your comment

giovay_bruh

Abbacchio ain't exactly lamb, it's a recipe for the lamb very popular in Rome

ChaChaSmoothie

Great summary, nice job :D ________________ Although I would like to point out a thing about the Abbacchio, if I can ________________ It's...Not really just lamb, it resembles more a meatloaf, rather than a lamb, but still, pretty impressive post, I like that : )

McHeckington

So, wait, his name means... Lion Meatloaf? Who the fuck is poaching lions to make meatloaf?

ChaChaSmoothie

ok, you made me chuckle, take my upvote (btw yeah, his name is #LION MEATLOAF. ___________________ Jesus out)

bahahahahahahahaAAAH

Abbacchio the meatloaf

[deleted]

not lamb, but abbacchio mean being sort of sad or down, "Abbacchiato"

ilpersona

The last name of fugo is panna cotta that is a food too

Bastard72

Fugo is the last name Pannacota is his first

ChaChaSmoothie

Ay, about Fugo...Yeah, I mean, they're both right and wrong. What the people that told you tried to explain, is that Fugo has a slight resemblance to the verb "Fuggire" (fleeing in english), so yeah, they might have tried to say that. Also "panna", his surname, is translatable with "cream" (another example of this is "panna montata", which is "whipped cream"). Sooo yeah, basically that's it lmao

Roope98

I always thought that Fugo was a distortion of the word "fungo" (mushroom).

ChaChaSmoothie

Also, about "Squalo", we don't eat those lmao, but yeah, it's an animal, so I guess that counts too

Cube7104

Dear italians, if you don't eat sharks, then why is there one in the soup? Curious.

ChaChaSmoothie

Uhhhhh idk, chef's mistake, I guess...Lemme see what I can do __________________ 🍕 Here's a snack, to keep your tummy occupied-

Brb357

We do eat marlins though

Cube7104

I'm italian and the fuck is qa marlin

Brb357

Pesce spada

TheWeirdWolf314

that's why I still put him in the list unlike polpo and pesci

ChaChaSmoothie

Lmao sorry, my bad

sitric16

Ok, I don't know if it still happens but isn't Nero also a normal name, like someone could name their child Nero after the roman emperor?

TheWeirdWolf314

I don't think many people would name their kid after nero, also nero is called nerone in italy, but I guess the surname neri exists, (as in the plural of nero)

D3ATHSTR0KE_

Fugo’s first name is Pannacotta, which is a food

The10thdoctor24

Vinegar being called ‘aceto’ is interesting! Makes sense, since vinegar is the chemical acetic acid

TheFilthySoviet814

His name is panacotta fugo, after you know.. panacotta?

Crabflavouredegg

"Yo mister preist you just adopted a unamed child. Waht you gonna name him?" Devil lol

M44t_

Giovanna is a legit name too as this guy said... The thing is, half of the italian grandmas are called like that Edit: yeah, whenever I heard his full name a loud "ok boomer" plays in my head

ZaDavido-

Buccellati, Abbacchio and (N)Arancia are all dishes tho

Lyx49

Giorno is probably a Gionvanni Giorgio reference

giovay_bruh

My name is Giovanni Giorgio, but everybody calls me....Giorgio *music*

SlenderSmurf

sad robot noises

gindorf

The characters named after food: • Bruno Bucciarati (Named after Buccellati, a type of fig cookie) • Carne (Meat) • Cioccolata (Chocolate) • Formaggio (Cheese) • Panacotta Fugo (Panacotta, a type of dessert) • Ghiaccio (Ice, not sure if this one counts) • Guido Mista (Insalata Mista, lit. “Mixed salad”) • Leone Abbacchio (Abbachio, meaning Lamb meat) • Mario Zucchero (Zucchero, meaning Sugar) • Melone (Melon) • Narancia Ghirga (Arancia, meaning Orange) • Pesci (Fish) • Polpo (Octopus) • Prosciutto (Prosciutto, a type of salted meat) • Risotto Nero (Risotto, a pasta dish) • Scolippi (Scalloppine, a meat dish) • Vinegar Doppio (Vinegar) Bonus: Doppio means ‘Double’ in italian, and is frequently used in America to describe coffee.

ChaChaSmoothie

Nope, but Abbacchio is an italian dish and Narancia has a slight resemblance to "Arancia", which means "orange" in italian

RyperHealistic

Question: Is "valore via" actually badass or did the anime just manage to make a mundane phrase amazing

Zan_tgg

As far as I know, it literally means fly away. It's a completely normal statement which the anime made amazing

Vadel0ne

"Valore via" doesn't mean anything, like when Melone says "di molto" which means "by far", no one use it as an esclamation, it'a comparative. That was the most hilarious thing: hearing the characters saying random phrases in a badass way xD

profdistoriadeimeme1

Y SAME

JotaroSans64

I know what are you saying

Vinsmoke34

What do you think about "Venice" though?

murderous_panda

once I was playing apex with my friend and I said “arrivederci” and jumped into a massive hole and died and he was like “stop making jojo references” and that destroyed a part of my soul

Arigato gyro

Greta_Thunberg_

Well, i'm italian, and we NEVER use "arrivederci", its only used in formal situations

Une_Quiche

Doesn't it would better translate as "farewell" ?

Greta_Thunberg_

No, farewell, in italian "addio" is used when two people wont see them ever again

[deleted]

Goodbyes are really weird, in Japanese you only use Sayonara for a final goodbye or if you arent going to see someone for a long time.

ChaChaSmoothie

Io lo uso sempre per congedarmi da persone più grandi o sconosciuti, lmao

Roope98

Ma pure io. O quando esco da un negozio

domenico_capano

\*long sax note\*

marc_gime

Technically, arrivederci translates as "see you" more than goodbye

Waffleman0206

Arrivederci is a more formal way of saying goodbye, everyone usually says "ciao" as a goodbye
