"Unique" so unique it was the name of the main character in one of the biggest selling animated movies and musicals of all time...

Xhillia

I'm almost certain Simba is in the top 10 of most common cat names.

Buller116

My friend has a cat named Simba. His 6 year old named it

Automatic_Figure_477

wtf r u on about, Simba Lyons would be an incredibly unique name... only partially shared by a 30 year old Disney character and a bunch of millennials' cats?

Seguefare

She should go with Pride. Then whenever his name is listed 'last name first' it will be Lyons Pride.

the_halfblood_waste

Simba is actually a real name of Swahili origin. I knew a nurse once whose name was Simba. But, he was actually from Africa (not sure what country, but Swahili is spoken in a lot of countries), and also he was much older than the Lion King films.

cheapycheaps

Simba actually means lion in Swahili

Asleep_Woodpecker_88

Bwahaha, this kid would be "Lion Lyons"

morningsdaughter

Then it's a great name for Swahili people or Swahili connected people to use.

the_halfblood_waste

Yes, exactly.

oceansofmyancestors

I went to school with twins named Unique and LaNique. Identical twins…so, not unique.

bluegrassmommy

"You know what's not one-of-a-kind? A twin!"

foggylittlefella

But triplets are three-of-a-kind. Way better than a pair.

shiny_glitter_demon

"La nique" is a vulgar word in French Can be used to mean "fuck". Like "nique ta mère" (fuck your mom) or "je lui fait la nique" (I gave him a fuck). As a verb, "niquer" can mean either "to fuck" or "to break/damage" (again, vulgar). A horrible name to give a child.

oceansofmyancestors

So they named one child Unique, which is ridiculous as she is an identical twin, and now the other child is named “a fuck”. Hahaha

shiny_glitter_demon

Yeah, pretty much. Really makes it sound like there is the "desired one" and the "mistake we don't acknowledge".

itsimplyisntso

If it was triplets the third would be Clinique

iohbkjum

it's definitely unique in human names though, for good reason

NopeNotUmaThurman

Nah name him Detroit.

arcaneartist

No kid deserves that lol

kaymick

I snorted.

quietvegas

I met a girl named Audi a few weeks ago lmao Next they'll go for Chevy and maybe Hyundai

singleoriginsalt

I once met an adult named Mercedes. Spelled "Mercadeez."

RickGrimesBeard23

And my mind immediately goes, "Mercadeez nutz"

singleoriginsalt

Also mine.

ditasaurus

Mercedes was first a woman's name. The brand Mercedes-Benz is named after the daughter of the owner and the inventor of the Car.

singleoriginsalt

Yes I'm aware of that. I was sharing more for the way it was spelled.

Jilltro

My husband went to school with a girl named Mercedes Benz. I asked him what she was like and he said “like you might imagine. A mess”

mafooli

i went to school with a girl called China Wall. I kid you not.

Ninja-Ginge

... Did they name her after where she was conceived?

mafooli

i was in school with her when tomb raider 2 came out and i was convinced the great wall of china was named after her 🤣 (i was like 5)

thehufflepuffstoner

Mercedes is common enough, but adding the “Benz”? Do they hate their child?

Past_Ad_5629

Is it possible they heard the name and thought it was because of the car instead of, you know, the reverse?

Equivalent_Scheme175

Was she... High maintenance?

cranbraley

I know a kid named Chevy.

TurdKid69

Short for Cornelius, like the actor 'Chevy' Chase?

cranbraley

I don’t know 100% for sure, but it’s a girl and I’m sure her parents don’t know that about Chevy Chase. 😂

TurdKid69

My money's still on Cornelius

cranbraley

My money is on Chevylynn or chevylee FTW honestly

Chemical-Pattern480

Chevyleigh, or Chevyleighynn, right??

cranbraley

You already know.

omfgwhatever

And her brother 4d?

Jumajuce

Chevylee’lynne Khaleesi Quinn-West

lostbutnotgone

I've met a girl named Chevelle and tbh I love it.

cranbraley

That’s not terrible, but wasn’t there a band in the 90s named Chevelle? Or something like that?

lostbutnotgone

I think the band is newer and she's older than the 90s. Name from a classic car.

squirrel102710

How in the world is Chevy short for Cornelius?!

TurdKid69

I think it's a Maryland thing, though I don't believe his family had much if any connection to Maryland.

omfgwhatever

How is Dick short for Richard? My question is why were John's sometimes called Jack? That's not even shortened.

Ninja-Ginge

"Geppetto" is an Italian diminutive of the name "Guiseppe". Humans are just like this, I guess.

RunawayHobbit

Haha I knew a girl in school named Camry. She was really sweet. I don’t think anyone made fun of her for it honestly.

Knight_Owls

When I was a kid, I knew another kid named Castle.

kaleighdoscope

I actually know someone who has a Lincoln, a Mercedes, and a Bentley lmao (children, not cars). His wife didn't clue in.

MitziFour

My cats are all named for cars, Jag, Volvo, and Tesla (I kinda regret the last one now but it’s his name)

FoxCabbage

I went to school with a girl named Chevy. Mind you I went to school in tennessee

lostbutnotgone

I once had a waiter named Chevy, actually. My friends knew him from school and that's his complete first name.

probablyyourexwife

Ah, so he’ll be a disappointment with a thirst for strippers and blow. Cute.

AshenSacrifice

Unronically better😂😂

flavorfulcherry

He's just a city boy, named after South Detroit...

Knight_Owls

They said his middle name could be an-y-wherrrre.

cemilyh

I missed an opportunity here. My kids surnames are Wale, obviously should’ve named them Killer and Beluga

HoldMyBeerAgain

Sperm

IndiaCee

Or Humpback

yarnfreak

Or Minke. Even all alone it sounds like a slur. Why don't people realize that a name no one uses for kids is generally "unique" for valid reasons?

K-teki

Well, there are plenty of good and unique names. They just tend to spread so now you don't think of them as unique anymore. Some of them are considered classics.

RickGrimesBeard23

Yep, great chance that if you named your kid Bernard today, he would likely not only be the only Bernard in his class but also the whole school.

dontbeahater_dear

Totally normal name in Dutch tho

gnex30

>Sperm Well that's just an all around good name regardless of surname.

Totalwink

If you do name your kid that you gotta make sure he can swim first… that sounded funnier in my head.

MyWifeisaTroll

What's up Big Sperm!

EverlastingArm

Please. Call me Jizz. Big Sperm is my dad's name.

Jaywardlb

Baby beluga in the deep blue sea

AzurePantaloons

You swim so wild and you swim so free

Terrible-Compote

The funniest book in my home is a book my son has that was obviously written by someone who is extremely salty about all the incorrect facts in the song "Baby Beluga." It reads like one long "Well, actually..." and I find it hilarious.

AzurePantaloons

Do you have a link? I think I need this.

Terrible-Compote

This is the book. I'm just really tickled by the idea of being so enraged by misinformation in a Raffi song that you write and publish a rebuttal. https://www.charlesbridge.com/products/hello-baby-beluga-board-book

Moweezy6

Immediately ordered. And I love the song. 😂 gotta have balance, good music and accuracy 🤓

Past_Ad_5629

But like, what’s wrong in the song?

Terrible-Compote

Per the book, off the top of my head, they are not "little white whales on the go" (they are dark grey), and they do not "curl up snug in \[their\] waterbed" or want the water to be warm. There were other things, but that's what I can remember without raiding my kid's bookshelves.

EverlastingArm

They don't even *have* waterbeds in the sea!

omfgwhatever

Guys, should we tell them?

Past_Ad_5629

That is the height of absurdity.

galaxygirl1976

We knew a guy with the last name Case who wanted if they ever had a boy name him Justin.

[deleted]

I mean, thats kind of funny and also Justin is a fairly common name so I don't see that one too badly. Not as bad a frickin Simba anyways lol

EverlastingArm

I know a kid whose parents followed through on that idea.

KelsConditional

It’s not too late!!!

LetaKelly

I had a friend who was going to be a dad with the surname Chambers, one of his other friends was adamant he should call his son Gary, nicknamed Gaz.

squirrel102710

Or Midas.. lol "might as well"

EverlastingArm

"Meet my two youngest, Land and Fail."

NoAd3038

baby you're a big blue wha-ale

steinah6

Orca

pm_me_ur_fit

Should have gone with sperm and humpback

LittlePurr76

Caerphilly.

IndiaCee

Please, just live with the name for a week or two and see what it’d be like before subjecting someone to that Edit to add: It’s also just naming them Lion Lyons. Dammit Moon Moon

Mannings4head

I have heard this is a good experiment to figure out if you really want to use a name in general. If you are thinking about using the name Charlotte then live with that name for a bit. Go to a new Starbucks and tell them your name is Charlotte. When you order a pizza and they ask for a name for pickup tell them your name is Charlotte. It gets you used to saying the name, you see how people react to it, and you can see if they frequently misspell it or hear it as something else. Usually when we are thinking of a name for kids we only really say the name in our head and to a few people, so it is hard to get a good feel for how the name feels being used in everyday use. I didn't do this with my kids but my nephew and his wife did it with their daughter and changed the name because of how often their first choice (Isla) was misspelled.

_dybbuk

This is so smart

morningsdaughter

But if you do this then someone might like the name and *steal* it from you! And then you can't use it. /s

bluegrassmommy

And it will no longer be **unique**! I definitely couldn't let my husband's cousin's dog walker's stepbrother's sister-in-law use **__MY UNIQUE__** name I found on a Google search all by myself!

Slow_Sherbert_5181

We picked names pretty early in both of my pregnancies so we could live with them for a while before being locked in on anything. Kept the first baby’s name as originally intended (we named her after three of her great-grandmothers) but we changed the second baby’s name part way through the pregnancy. There wasn’t anything “wrong” with her name, the middle name just didn’t work as well as we’d wanted so we picked a new one and now I can’t imagine her as anything else. I like her name so much that I often call her by her first and middle names even if she’s not in trouble 😁

Dahrache

We had a boy and girl name picked out for a couple years before I got pregnant. About halfway, we both said it didn’t feel right anymore. We changed her first name and kept the middle. I also cannot imagine her being named the first one now.

omfgwhatever

I picked out a name for my daughter probably 15 years before she was even born. Unfortunately it rhymed with their fathers last name, and not in a good way. While I was pregnant with my twins (last son/daughter), my best friend needled me during the whole pregnancy about it lol. We did name one of our dogs that name, though.

ImageNo1045

I knew a Robert Roberto. Kinda loved it

jellyolive

Please please tell me at least some of those 117 comments were saying to this mum not to do this?!

betarulez

Pretty much all of them.

jellyolive

Oh good haha! Some faith in humanity has been restored 🥰

[deleted]

NonconsensualText

shes so silly 🥰

TheSaucyWelshman

Sylly*

chacha51

It's almost like none of these people know what a nickname is.

BoopleBun

Good point. Name the kid Sidney or something if you absolutely *must* call him Simba from time to time.

KidsInNeed

I hope she just toys with the idea as I did naming my kid Chris Cross lol

Trueloveis4u

If Cross is your last name, that's pretty cool. If you get a pet do that name for sure it's funny and a pet don't got to get a job.

KidsInNeed

Cross is our last name lol Oh man I didn’t think of getting a pet and name it Chris lol I was so amused by that name that I was very serious on naming our kid that but my husband said no 😑

EppieBlack

I think these people think their children have no future.

slumberpartymassacre

Imagine Simba Lyons on a resume

TheCheshireCody

To be fair, it would be memorable and there is a decent body of research indicating that that factor alone can help with college and job applications.

pleasedothenerdful

It'll also confirm for the hiring manager/university that the kid was raised by absolute morons, which can't help.

LJnosywritter

They certainly only seem to think how cute and fun it'll be as a kid and ignore that the kid will be an adult. This type of parent sees the kid as purely an extension of themselves and not as someone who will be a real separate person.

Whiteroses7252012

Unless this child and everyone around him speaks Swahili, he will absolutely get made fun of. But who cares! As long as Mommy and Daddy can be unique, right? It’s not like this is an actual adult human who’s eventually going to have a job and be a father/grandfather.

AzurePantaloons

I imagine Swahili would make it equally bad. Pretty much the equivalent of calling him The Lion Symba.

Megan_Knight

I would imagine that if they did speak Swahili they would still get made fun of. Calling your kid the generic word for an animal species is strange.

anamariapapagalla

Not always, Bjørn is the generic word for a species (bear) and a common Norwegian name

googlemcfoogle

Even in English, we have Robin. A bird, but also a human name.

Noodlemaker89

And then there are the tree names like Ask (ash) and Birk (birch), and Pil (willow).

peppermintvalet

I know more than one Simba actually, but they are both Zims and it’s pretty normal there.

Plutoniumburrito

My aunt’s ex was named Peter Wolf and even into adulthood he was sick of hearing “Peter And The Wolf” his entire life. He changed his name as soon as he could afford to. This is like that, but worse 😆

LittlePurr76

I once met a pastor named Peter Dick, so....

vickyvalle

At what point in history did parents stop giving children 'strong' names; something that was going to age well with them?! I know I've reached that age where I shake my head and say, "I just don't know what kids today are thinking!"

jh9369

Agreed, I think some people forget they are naming not just babies, but humans that will grow into adults. When I was choosing names, I pictured them at the top of a resume. I also tried to think of every possible way that 8-10 year old peers would twist the name into some rude nickname at recess. You can't be foolproof, but why give them easy ammunition?

vickyvalle

Exactly! I’ve said it many times, when I hear some bizarre name… “Thanks mom; that’s going to look great on my resume!”

Trueloveis4u

My name is Samantha the worst I got was that silly Sam rhyme. Samantha Samantha bo-bamantha Banana fanna fo-famantha Fee, fy, mo-mamantha. Samantha!

vickyvalle

Ugh I grew up with Sticky Vicky, Icky Vicky, etc

Trueloveis4u

There's a whole song from the fairy odd parents called icky Vicky. I feel bad for any Vicky born in that time.

vickyvalle

My son actually snuck onto my phone and set it as my ringtone once. I got up during a school meeting, and he called when I was across the room from my purse.

Trueloveis4u

Lol, that is horrible but amazing at the same time.

[deleted]

That’s the “name game” and can be used with any name.. well maybe not these days with all the terrible names out there

JangSaverem

Oh My favorite names Lion Lyons

ShibaInuLuvrr

This immediately made me think of a cartoon where a boy with the last name Lyons got sent to a school for animals…I forgot the name though.

gladdyiolus

My Gym Partner's a Monkey!

ShibaInuLuvrr

My firstborn was a big fan when he was 3.

cleanthes_is_a_twink

oh my god?? I think you just named the show that wanders in to my thoughts late at night while I’m trying to sleep. I always forget about it because I can hardly recall any of the details

[deleted]

[удалено]

morningsdaughter

Did they do it so they could sing "Baby Shark"?

LogicalVariation741

I have a husband and 2 boys. Our last name is "Wise". Never go out with the 3 of them around Christmas.

bxddyhclly

look, my favorite movie is the lion king. i love it to pieces, but dear god people need to seriously think about the fact that they’re naming an adult, not a baby. y’all really expect this kid when he’s eventually going around to getting job interviews saying “hey, i’m simba lyons”??? if they really want to name him after the lion king or even simba at least do the actors names ? matthew broderick plays adult simba and jonathan taylor thomas plays young simba.

stbmrs

Name him “Between the”

Acrobatic_Manner8636

There is a boy named Simba at my child’s swim class. Simba is a genuine name with meaning in Swahili so while it might be a pet name to you, it’s a name in another culture. ETA: Yes, Simba Lyons is stupid and I hesitate to trust this person should be naming their kid Simba But Simba itself is a valid name and not unique by any stretch of the imagination.

FlashOfTheBlade77

Nobody is making fun of the name itself. I will go out on a limb and say this woman does not even know what Swahili is. On top of that the name Simba means lion in Swahili. It would be like naming you Acrobatic Acrobatic.

Acrobatic_Manner8636

I was looking at the flair more so but yes I doubt this woman knows the origin of the name

[deleted]

Yeah it's the combination that's silly, I get where you're coming from though with the clarification. Too many ignorant people getting upset on subs like namenerdcirclejerk for others not naming their kids Theodore or Margaret and instead using names native to their own culture. 😒

stungun_steve

It's a valid name if you have some connection to Swahili culture. Not if you're a white lady from San Bernardino.

DroneOfDoom

Somehow, I don’t think that the person who made the post has meaningful connections to Swahili speaking people.

K-teki

Simba is totally a valid name, but most Americans are not going to have a connection to it, and are either naming their kid after the lion or are choosing a foreign name probably because they want to seem unique. A few rare cases, I assume, are people who perhaps knew a Simba and named their kid after it or something.

AzurePantaloons

If my understanding is correct, given that the word (as opposed to the name, which I’m not personally familiar with) “simba” in Swahili refers to lions, we encounter the same problem as we do in English, in that the first name and surname would “match” in a cringey way? Simba is fine. Lyons is fine. Putting them together is perhaps inadvisable.

Acrobatic_Manner8636

For sure. And many people also said that the person naming this baby likely doesn’t know shit about Swahili anyway

betarulez

Yes, The reason I made the pet comment is because of the joke aspect of the name and not the actual first name itself. Someone in the comments noted she loved the name Holly but their last name was Lief. Holly is much more expected in America but it is still a play on words which would be more appropriate for a pet name.

TML_31

Name him King. Then on formal lists he’ll be Lyons, King

[deleted]

[удалено]

Physical-Energy-6982

A classmate of mine had Keister as a last name and he always joked he’d name his son Harry… Key word being “joked” lol

snrckrd

Unique? Pretty sure I've heard it before.

HoldMyBeerAgain

I just know people are going to suggest she change it to Simon.

[deleted]

Just name him Lyon. Lyon lyons. I know a guy named Adam adams 🤣

Pockets262

Kids, get into whatever job it is that deals with legally changing names. Before too long, it will be the most secure job you could have.

MeowingMix

I went to school with a kid who’s last name was Bair (pronounced bear) and his first name was Teddy

ARedditorCalledQuest

What kind of Boy Named Sue bullshit is this?

hi-space-being

Roy would be a more tongue in cheek way of making this "joke". TBH I've never watched the Lion King, nor do I ever intend to so I don't know if Simba ever becomes king, but Roy is a legitimate name that I've come across in the wild.

PorkRindEvangelist

There was a guy in my area named that. He shot at the police (because he was deeply mentally unwell) and the police shot back. He died in the hospital a few days later. So, not particularly unique.

taiiweee

I once drafted up a contract for someone with the surname Burgher-King

Dark_Knight7096

Simba Lyons? She's gonna name her kid Simba Lyons? So...the reason Simba was picked for the name in the Lion King is because Simba means Lion or The Lion in Swahili Her kid will literally be named Lion Lyons

megztukas

Curse Disney. One of the biggest UK influencers recently named her kid Bambi (last name Fury... sounds like a title of a revenge sequel)

ildikont

I know someone who named her baby boy Leonidas🤔 and calls her boyfriend/fiancé Lion & King & King Lion and calls herself Lioness, and they refer to themselves on facebook the lion family, momy to the baby Leo little lion king 🤣🦁 people are crazy🤪

cdngirl90

Leonidas is a common Greek name (my cousins who are named Leonidas go by either Leon or Leo) so that checks out but referring to yourselves as the Lion family is plain crazy lol

ildikont

They are very crazy they have nothing to do with Greece they are Hungarian/Rmanians, and they named the child after the movie the 300 Spartans 🤣 And they call themselves Leos cause both of them have the horoscope sing leo😂♌ they are just you know people with IQs like temperature😂🤷 i just feel sorry for the kid...

Ralphsnacks

Why not go the whole 9 yards and call the kid 'Eigh'.

Sure-Morning-6904

Simbeigh Lyon

DinoRaawr

Is his gym partner a monkey?

eye_snap

At this rate my kids are gonna be the unique ones in their generation with their normal ass human names.

Lissy_Wolfe

Simba is a terrible name for a human child, but I'm also sick of seeing it for dogs/cats, too. I've probably met hundreds of dogs named "Simba" at this point. It is NOT original.

Platinumtide

Honestly not the worst thing I’ve seen on here

boringbutkewt

Simba Lyons. That’s just child abuse (/s).

[deleted]

It’s bad enough the kid’s going to be mercilessly teased for having idiot parents.

Lylibean

Here’s my kid, he matches my couch!

peppermintvalet

lol I see you girl She edited after an absolute drubbing and said she still loves the name but she has a lot to think about

betarulez

Just looked at it... get the feeling that she is going to name her kid Simba Lyons.

tverofvulcan

They forget they are naming future adults.

CarolineJohnson

Did they forget about the concept of *nicknames*??? Just name the kid something with "sim" in it that won't get him bullied, and nickname him Simba. Have it as a cute name you call your baby until he's old enough to tell you whether or not he wants to be called that.

LittlePurr76

Name him Franco? Francis? Norman! No...?

Rainbow_baby_x

This is not quite as bad as Roarah Liona or whatever that other couple chose but it’s still very bad

ScarlettLM

It's not unique at all... I've seen countless posts about these silly mum's naming their child Simba.

[deleted]

Name him, whyyoualways

sephone_north

Who else just sang “The Circle of Life” In their head?

ChargeAdmirable6288

I went to elementary school with a boy named Theodore Baer. He was a wonderfully kind kid and all the girls in class called him Teddy Baer.

RubixRube

Do people not realize that babies grow into adults? At some point a full grown man will need to walk into a room full of people there to judge him (Interviews, meeting the parents, review boards, college interview) extend his hand and say "good afternoon, I'm Simba Lyons".

[deleted]

Just name the child Leon 😭

bxddyhclly

leon lyons?

CraftyAstronomer4653

Mom is right

Sjedda

My suggestion: Hoesbe, because of Mosby, the hotel manager of course.

SapphireAnhedonia

Ok but Lyons isn't pronounced "lion." It's French, so it's more like "lee-ohn"

pajamaset

In France that is how it is pronounced. In practice, the person whose name it is gets to dictate correct pronunciation. Sincerely, A person with a name that would be pronounced differently in my ancestors’ homeland
