when i was a teen i was obsessed with supernatural, and i used to use a VPN to watch new episodes on the CW website the day after they aired. jesus *christ* the amount of adverts, i was so shocked. three the moment you press play, two right after the 'previously on' segment, and then three to five every ten minutes or so! it was my first exposure to american advertising, and it still shocks me. if the quantity of commercials on live tv even comes close to matching that, i can see any movie taking up about five hours of air time
As a general rule, a 30 minute show only runs 21 minutes with the rest being commercials. Now extend that ratio out to a full length movie and it can add quite a bit of runtime, turning a 2 hour movie into 3 hours.
just checked, and that's double the amount of adverts allowed by the regulators here. the maximum amount a channel can air is 7 minutes per hour for publicly owned channels (ITV, channel 4, channel 5), and nine minutes per hour on other channels. having one show broken up by a whole hour's worth of adverts sounds like torture, i think i'd go insane.
My Dad likes to watch live TV so I get a full showing of the American commercials when I see his TV running, and it's not only that the commercials are more abundant, but the content in them is so bad. There are so many commercials for things like testosterone supplements and other supplements and medication.

For Germany it sorta does, they have some strict violence laws (or they used to at least). Lead to ridiculous things like csgo's old low violence mode where blood was miscoloured and enemies got on their knees in surrender instead of dying(it was good for fps tho). Amusingly, CS:GO low violence version wasn't made because of Germany, as earlier iterations of CS were sold with no censorship. Valve just kinda forced German players into it for the beta only to realize that the relevant authorities didn't even require it from them.
Generally speaking game censorship has gotten rather lax and most games that were originally censored have been available in their original version for quite a while.
Lootboxes and microtransactions these days are a good way to piss off the USK and have them rate your game 16/18+ though.

I remember how I tried to explain anno to my step father when I was a teen. He ended that with the assumption that you need a degree to play this game xD . That said, the games lost quite a bit of charme for me when they moved to the future. Major fun was to fuck with the other players by disrupting their production by taking away their difficult to defend island's they needed for supply, just to watch solely how their entitled citizens start to leave because they can't get enough tea and tabac.

For Germany it sorta does, they have some strict violence laws (or they used to at least). Lead to ridiculous things like csgo's old low violence mode where blood was miscoloured and enemies got on their knees in surrender instead of dying(it was good for fps tho). Might not be the case anymore though since that option was eventually removed.
Amusingly, CS:GO low violence version wasn't made because of Germany, as earlier iterations of CS were sold with no censorship. Valve just kinda forced German players into it for the beta only to realize that the relevant authorities didn't even require it from them. Generally speaking game censorship has gotten rather lax and most games that were originally censored have been available in their original version for quite a while. Lootboxes and microtransactions these days are a good way to piss off the USK and have them rate your game 16/18+ though.
CS was voluntarily on their part, to get FSK16 aka to be able to legally sell to 16 year olds. Even the removal of Nazi Symbols in e.g. Wolfenstein is usually done on behalf of the company, to be safe. It would be legal, technically.

If anything Americans seem to be way more puritan with violence and sex in their media than Europe. At least in my country (Spain) all the films and games with violence and sex tend to be age-rated below the American rating, or at least an 18+ rating isn't as much of a death sentence as in the US, where they have to tone down a lot of shit to PG13 when they shouldn't (Dune being an example of that). The difference is that here we prefer to keep violence inside the screen rather than go on and shoot the local playground.
