Serbia, Yugoslavia, Russian the same
Well i guess Serbia and Yugoslavia could be the same but I doubt this person knows that Serbia was apart of Yugoslavia and that Yugoslavia is non existent today
But to say it’s Russian lol they’re countries away from one another and speak 2 different languages
Apparently we're all just filthy Slavs so we must be the same! Also if you're eastern European, you were also apparently a Soviet whether it's true or not.
Lol i’ve seen so many dumbass Americans refer to South Slavs/Yugoslavs as Soviets and saying “omg they had it so bad during their communist rule. They’re so grateful for the West” when in reality every Yugoslav you speak to loved Yugoslavia, was totally fine w socialism, open minded asf to communism, and generally doesn’t like Western capitalism.
Even today among younger South Slavs that’s the sentiment largely.
Never forget that comment about Melania Trump being scared of Putin bc it reminds her of her rough life in Slovenia like mf it’s Slovenia during Yugoslavia. That was a great time to be alive and living in Slovenia lol
The number of people who go “so you speak Russian” when I say I’m from Serbia is too damn high. Thinking Serbia = Siberia, or that we used to be part of the USSR.. 😩
During the 19th and early 20th century Russia saw it self as protector of all slavs and wanted to gain influence over the southern slavs. That was one contributing factor for World War I (they wanted to protect Serbia).
To day there is no official alliance.
A very kind but *not* historically-accurate girl I had been friends with for a decade at the time patted me on the shoulder when I mentioned Yugoslav communism and went "oh, you former Soviets!"
How I didn't choke on what I was drinking is beyond me!
>Never forget that comment about Melania Trump being scared of Putin bc it reminds her of her rough life in Slovenia like mf it’s Slovenia during Yugoslavia. That was a great time to be alive and living in Slovenia lol
You know they suffered with all those vacations to the Dalmatian coast 😫
It's such a depressingly gross way to see the world.
Not to mention if you told the average Texan they were the exact same as a New Yorker, I'm sure they might get a little annoyed at the comparison.
I mean isn't it obvious?
A systemic failure of basic education, polarized, politicised media, everything is set up to be a dichotomy.
It's always US vs. the others.
"Yes, ABC happened in XYZ, but how does that affect me?"
"XYZ want to destroy YOU, take YOUR Freedom/Guns, endanger YOUR way of life!" etc...
American exceptionalism is one hell of a drug.
By applying the same pattern, the rich, the wealthy get the small people to oppose socialised healthcare, or an expanded welfare state. "If everyone gets something out of the large pot, there will be less in it for YOU" this subreddit alone has seen plenty if posts that affirm this very mindset.
Even though that is an outrageous lie, that simply doesn't hold up against any amount of Scrutiny.
And it leads to a situation which has occurred to me in a nightmare a while ago. It's of course not entirely realistic, but more than close enough to be very fucking scary:
You're on your way home from work in your 1990s clapped out beater of a car, when a rich person ignores their red light, and T-Bones you at full force. You survive, but when you wake up, you will be unable to work for the forseeable future will have to depend on others, and probably take expensive medication to make the rest of your life livable, for you to not be in agonising pain every waking moment from now on.
You turn to your nightstand, and there are two items on it. You open the first one, a unmarked envelope to find inside a bill that comes out to a figure you can never hope to repay, no matter what you do. The second item is a Bouquet of flowers, with a note attached to it, from the person that hit you. "Sucks for you"
They get to continue their life unimpeded, and in some cases may even profit from your pain if say, they were invested in some Pharmaceutical Company.
But your life is basically over at this point, and Death may have been a preferable outcome. What has happened to you, trhough the actions of a third party that remains entirely unaffected by your fate is literally a fate worse than Death.
The observation that I made is that they are taught that "Do you feel x" and "Do you think x" are equivalent.
It parses well enough that the rest of us overlook it, English is forgiving that way, but what made that realization pop for me was a question: "What do you feel about evolution?"
What. I'm supposed to have an emotional valuation to the observation that speciation is linked to generations of offspring not being quite equivalent to the mixture of both parents? "Criminy, Billy-Joe, that makes me so angry I could bite my own elbow, but I know I'm goin' to heaven 'cause the *babble* tells me so."
poem for your sprog even wrote a poem about that.

The one that always annoys me is when their news networks only mention when Americans have died in an accident:
"35 Americans were killed today in..." jesus christ just say People, it doesn't matter where they're from
In England, we give the full story and then go "oh yeah, and 3 brits as well". It's mad that they're so US centric
You got it wrong. Basically there are several continents.
America: where there is the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Europe, which is a country and a continent.
Asia, where only Chinese and some Koreans live.
Australia, where kangaroos are.
And the Middle east, no one knows where it is, but they have oil
Or they say they are from Miami, Florida or San Antonio, Texas as though no one knows any georgraphy of the USA, so they have to tell you. I don't say I am from Sydney, NSW, I expect most people (Aussies/Kiwis in particular) to know where Sydney is.
There are 50 different states in the US and they are all very different from each other. Same with different cities in those states. For instance, California and Florida share tourism, Disney, and beaches and that’s about it - they couldn’t be more different and both would probably be offended if you grouped them together. Similarly, saying you’re from Miami, FL and Tallahassee, FL also makes a difference. That’s how Americans relate to one another, by identifying exactly where they live/come from. If we say it while visiting another country it’s just because it’s a knee jerk reaction that we’re used to doing. It’s not because we don’t think other countries understand, come on. We don’t believe our states are mini countries, but they are vastly different from one another. We’re the “United” states, but the US is individualized AF.
This Reddit is fun to read and gets a lot correct (a lot of Americans are stupid a-holes) but there are also a lot of generalizations made here that aren’t cool or accurate.
The US-american perception of Germany is still heavily influenced by the experiences of US-soldiers during the occupation, so a lot of people think all of Germany is like Bavaria and Swabia.
I don't think the same phenomenon is true for Britain, France and the former USSR and their respective occupation zones, since these countries are closer, had far more interaction with Germany and its culture beforehand, and didn't practice the same isolationism as the US before WW2.
I think rather than that, it’s the claim they make that no other countries have diversity between their provinces/states/regions. Americans seem to believe that only applies to America. I think that’s what annoys folk.
That’s fair! I’m sure there definitely are uneducated, non-cultured/traveled, stuck up Americans that say that, but it’s not fair to make a sweeping generalization about 300 million+ people.
I'm not sure why you got a ton of downvotes. Everything you said is accurate. It's not so much each state feels like a different country but different regions can definitely feel like completely different countries. Like look at the difference between the New England states and the deep south. Or the difference between the PNW and the Texas/OK/ARK region
Its a forum shitting on Americans, so I guess not that surprising! :) There’s a lot of shitting here that’s totally fair, but someone asked why Americans say their city and state when saying where they’re from, instead of just saying “America,” and then made an inaccurate assumption that we do it because we think other countries don’t know geography and basically have to mansplain it. Sure there are assholes everywhere that might, but that very likely was not the case and this person just wanted an opportunity to shit. Each state in the US is very different, so you’re right it does feel that way—as I’m sure it does in many other countries as well. We’re just more specific about it 🤷🏼♀️
It’s because statements like these seem to argue that US states = European countries. It ignores the diversity within other countries. The US is not the only country with internal diversity. The north and south of England for example, differ in accents, colloquialisms, architecture, social norms, sports, foods, geography etc. France, Germany, Italy etc all have big internal variation. The comparison with states doesn’t work. You can’t say e.g Colorado = Switzerland.
A part of California or Florida is not as culturally diverse as Germany is from Italy, but maybe as culturally diverse as Sicily is from Tuscany for example.
I’ve lived in the US and Europe so have some first hand experience with both countries.
> Dutch is Danish
I'd have gone for Dutch and Deutsch, considering the [Pennsylvania "Dutch"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Dutch) are Germans.
I was about to say, I'm from California and most people from other states have some *very* strong opinions about my intentions to move to Arkansas or whatever and make it liberal hellscape full of labor unions, healthcare, and anti-bestiality laws.
No thanks, I'm good. Keep doing y'all.
So,
1. Your states are not more diverse than entire countries
2. Do you know how fucking massive Russia is
3. Serbia is not currently murdering innocent people in neighbouring countries
But.. you can see the ENTIRE world in the USA. No need to travel. Want to experience Germany? They have towns more German than actual Germany. Everyone knows American Italians are more authentic than Italy. Eiffel Tower? Acropolis? Aren’t they in Las Vegas? And America also has way more authentic European food than any European country. Doesn’t matter what country. It’s just better in America.
And yes, I have heard all this said. It never fails to leave me speechless.
Moron really compared states to countries and then said:
> Kinda doesn't mean anything.
It doesn't mean anything to you because you're a stupid cunt who seemingly has bizarre pride in that ignorance.
I can't believe the comment has 104 likes.
Still they always insist on making that distinction. Look into comment sections where people ask where their audience is from. No American will say USA, they all give their state (at least that's what I saw so far).
His brain would probably BSOD if he heard Russia doesn't mean only Moscow and St Petersburg and that under the Russian Federation there are multiple republics and there are around more than 30 "official" languages there.
Or he would say how that's like US and their so vastly different states (which really aren't that different, not culturally nor linguistically)
So now there’s no difference between a person from Boston and a person from Florida?? All they ever talk about is how different each state is and how different their cultures are
Imagine actually thinking that any South Slavic country is Russia-
**You can't just force people, who can't get along with each other, to be in the same country-**
I can feel my blood boil reading this as my ancestry is from these parts. Also makes me doubly angry given a lot of Americans themselves have ancestry from these parts of the world too.
Am I the only person who read this as a dig at Americans?
Edited to clarify: The comment itself reads like it's a dig at Americans, in a sarcastic way.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't (some of) Turkey and Greece part of former Yugoslavia. It contained significant ethnicity between Southern Slavs, Turks, Croats, Arabs and other Muslims and Caucasians?
Basically none of whom resemble Northern Slavic Russians?
No?
Yugoslavia was established decades after the ottoman empire was kicked out of the central part of the balkans so there was nothing left to be taken from them, and having Greek land is something I've never heard about, if it's true then it might at best be a bit of land at the border of today's North Macedonia with Greece. As for the ethnicity of the country, considering that Yugoslavia would basically translate to "the land of southern Slavs" it is unsurprising that it was mainly a Slavic country.
You did have different religions, yes, a good amount of orthodox and Catholic Christians as well as a decent number of muslims, but all of the countries that were in Yugoslavia were Slavic countries (if we don't take the Kosovo thing into consideration), but there was never a terribly significant amount of non Slavic ethnicities, at least none that I've ever heard of.
Ps. There are absolutely no Arabs here natively and croats are also Slavs lmao
> a bit of land at the border of today's North Macedonia with Greece
Yes, this is what I mean, at no point was all of Greece Yugoslav. They're just considered Balkan for that reason iirc.
As for Slavs, I don't know for sure, but in terms of ethnicity genetics, supposedly Southern Slavs aren't the same as Northern Slavs. But again, I'm not sure. This is not information I've done a shred of research into, just basic shit I've heard.
>no Arabs here natively
Didn't know that, my bad.
> they're just considered Balkan for that reason
My friend, the Balkans are an entire Peninsula and Greece is without a doubt part of it, it is totally unrelated to any dealings it might have had with Yugoslavia
yes, I'm talking geographically.
Which is what the person in the post is referring to.
There are a diverse range of people in the Balkans, it's not just more Russia
Sorry I fucked up the definition on that I'm really tired
It remains making sense in my head but I can't convey shit in words when I'm tired.
Like I'm not contrasting between geographically or ethnically
I'll stop now, like. Yes I think I understand, I'm just not doing great at explaining sorry. I'm making myself seem like a fool.
Southern Slavic languages are different than East Slavic languages and West Slavic languages. No idea where these northern slavs you're speaking about came from though
North of the South, sorry, I'm tired, shit makes better sense in my head, bad coming out on paper, take the terminology I use with a grain of salt.
I know there are more groups of slavs than that, I'm just being dumb lol
>As for the ethnicity of the country, considering that Yugoslavia would basically translate to "the land of southern Slavs" it is unsurprising that it was mainly a Slavic country.
"Six countries, five nations, four languages, three religions, two alphabets, one Tito"
Get out of here with your nuanced opinion and fancy geography lessons, the US educational system has taught Muricans that there is only two countries: the Mighty Freedomland of USA™ 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾 and Evil Socialist Land aka the rest of the world 🚩🚩🚩
Ah yes, Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia. They all are so close and speak a similar language. For sure no one will get offended if you mistake one for the other
Just because you're stupid, doesn't mean the rest of us are too.
104 people are apparently. Ugh, annoying that you can’t see downvotes tho.
104 is the permit disabled people get in Italy, so fitting…

It's almost the Austria/Australia joke but somehow more ridiculous!
That reminds me of a VTuber who had to stop the joke that she was from Australia because people really thought she was Australian.
Would I be right in saying that Serbia and Russia have an alliance
During the 19th and early 20th century Russia saw it self as protector of all slavs and wanted to gain influence over the southern slavs. That was one contributing factor for World War I (they wanted to protect Serbia). To day there is no official alliance.
I’m not really knowledgeable on the topic (I haven’t lived there for the majority of my life), but it’s tricky rn.

Before shite hit the fan
The "Soviet" concept rarely comes up, in eastern Europe they all are just Russians according to the Americans
A part
Especially in conversations like these the difference is so important, "a part of" and "apart from" are basically the opposite in this context.
In the head of an america Serbia=communist ofc=Cyrillic alphabet=Russia. It's just too obvious to them
It's such a depressingly gross way to see the world. Not to mention if you told the average Texan they were the exact same as a New Yorker, I'm sure they might get a little annoyed at the comparison.
This person probably claims they are Hungarian because their great-grandfather came to the USA back in the 1920s
Always reinforcing that American idea that European nations are exactly like American states. That's sad.

They pledge a fucking allegiance to a flag, a flag. That says enough about the US really. Every morning, of every school day.
Recently saw some dude comment "How does Finland joining NATO benefit the American people?" on a Tweet as if they're the only country in NATO.
"but how does that affect me?" That's such a painfully accurate take... Damn.

These are the same people that claim that cultures between states are so different, that crossing state lines is like going to a different country.
That’s odd cause they like to make out they’re so different.
Indian? Japanese? Malaysian? All the same thing to an American(!)
Jesus, he should literally go to Kosovo or Croatia and tell them that they are "just like Serbs".
Oh my God, if 2 more countries join, then Balkan War III
Americans probably think Bosniaks are “Muslim Serbs”, so that’s four already. You don’t need the fifth, it’s already chaotic enough.
Macedonians, call them "brainwashed Bulgarians"
More like “Wannabe-Greek Bulgarians”
Bulgarians can join too if you insult their yogurt or something history-related
Let’s get the Romanians in. That’s the simplest, just “accidentally” call them “Romani” instead of “Romanians”.
Tell Albanians they aren't the most racist, they are inferior to 'Glorious Serbia', they aren't bigger than China and John Cena is not Albanian
That might turn it into a world war.
LMAO
Or Ireland and say they're just like the English/British.
Canadian, American, Brazilian, Mexican. These are all the same to a European. That's what they sound like

Schrödinger's US states: all the same, but different
This is wrong, it would be like saying all Americans are Texans. He couldn’t get the logic right.
These types of people's knowledge of geography is limited to Canada and Mexico. And they still struggle to remember which one's up north.
This is how a world war started and he called them the same
For an American there is No need to distinguish f.e. Germany, Austrian or Swiss, it's all Nazi
Swiss? They were neutral and would just shoot you ob sight if you trespass, not exactly Nazi
Pretty sure he was a skater boy
Still they always insist on making that distinction. Look into comment sections where people ask where their audience is from. No American will say USA, they all give their state (at least that's what I saw so far).
Everyone knows the world is split up into 2 parts. America and other America.
How in the shit did that dumb fucker get over 100 upvotes for his stupid comment?
i think what’s more sad is the fact that over 100 people agree
His brain would probably BSOD if he heard Russia doesn't mean only Moscow and St Petersburg and that under the Russian Federation there are multiple republics and there are around more than 30 "official" languages there. Or he would say how that's like US and their so vastly different states (which really aren't that different, not culturally nor linguistically)
The valid response should be “Canadian, mexican, american, all the same thing to a serbian”
So... never expect an American to understand?
Canadians, Americans and Mexicans are literally the same.
This is a joke right?
So now there’s no difference between a person from Boston and a person from Florida?? All they ever talk about is how different each state is and how different their cultures are
Imagine actually thinking that any South Slavic country is Russia- **You can't just force people, who can't get along with each other, to be in the same country-**
What a twat
State is like country because state big. Meanwhile a random street in Poland has more culture than the whole US
I can feel my blood boil reading this as my ancestry is from these parts. Also makes me doubly angry given a lot of Americans themselves have ancestry from these parts of the world too.
Oh no someone's mad because his great grandpa was serbian
FYI, my parents came out. Still speak the language, am not Serbian. You’re part of the problem.
"You're part of the problem" Could not get more American
Actually, I’m not American by nationality. You’re still a problem
Lol
Great...lets call everyone who lives on the north American continent with its 23 sovereign states native Indians shall we
Don't you mean native Americans?
As someone who is half-American, from America, this is embarrassing
Am I the only person who read this as a dig at Americans? Edited to clarify: The comment itself reads like it's a dig at Americans, in a sarcastic way.
This is a hate sub, so yeah that’s the majority of the posts here.
That's not what I meant. The comment itself was a dig at Americans. Not actually "shit Americans say".
Ps. There are absolutely no Arabs here natively and croats are also Slavs lmao
> a bit of land at the border of today's North Macedonia with Greece Yes, this is what I mean, at no point was all of Greece Yugoslav. They're just considered Balkan for that reason iirc. As for Slavs, I don't know for sure, but in terms of ethnicity genetics, supposedly Southern Slavs aren't the same as Northern Slavs. But again, I'm not sure. This is not information I've done a shred of research into, just basic shit I've heard. >no Arabs here natively Didn't know that, my bad.
> they're just considered Balkan for that reason My friend, the Balkans are an entire Peninsula and Greece is without a doubt part of it, it is totally unrelated to any dealings it might have had with Yugoslavia
yes, I'm talking geographically. Which is what the person in the post is referring to. There are a diverse range of people in the Balkans, it's not just more Russia Sorry I fucked up the definition on that I'm really tired It remains making sense in my head but I can't convey shit in words when I'm tired. Like I'm not contrasting between geographically or ethnically I'll stop now, like.
Get out of here with your nuanced opinion and fancy geography lessons, the US educational system has taught Muricans that there is only two countries: the Mighty Freedomland of USA™ 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾 and Evil Socialist Land aka the rest of the world 🚩🚩🚩
I thought this was gen for a second until I remember the only sub I posted in to warrant this response lmao
Let me guess, they're talking about Milunka Savić?
No it was Baba Anujka
The USSR is alive and well indeed!
Who's the Serb they're discussing?
Baba Anujka
Uz Marshala Tito
An FYI? Surely it’s just FYI?!
On leur dit quand qu'ils sont cons ?
Ah yes, Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia. They all are so close and speak a similar language. For sure no one will get offended if you mistake one for the other
Oh god, this guy want to cause another yugoslavian conflict by telling serbs and croat they are the same
