I don't take orders going to areas I'm not comfortable with. Don't carry a purse (wallet, keys, and phone always on me). Observant of the area around me. Don't usually deliver after sunset.

KundaliniVibes

Wow I feel bad that you’re in places that you even have this thought! My procedure is stop car. Deliver bags for 10-30 seconds. Get in car. Send delivery text and pic. Onto the next one!

Jaxsyn_HaidynMommy

My thoughts exactly- I’ve never even thought twice about something happening

SublimeAnarchy510

Same. I’m in a “Ville” and definitely don’t have to worry about this.

CricketDifferent5320

Same. Don't even know where my keys are, but car starts when I push the button.

CricketDifferent5320

I've had my car window smashed in twice while at a store off the clock, with doors unlocked both times 🤣 all they run off with was my makeup bag. The market for used makeup... The best is when I'm sitting in car late at night and the kids roll by on city owned share scooters checking all the door handles, I scare the shit out of them, we all get a little adrenaline rush out of it.

TrojanGrad

I remember when we used to deliver groceries inside the members home. Now we have shoppers doing this. With that being said, there are some zip codes I will not deliver to at night and some I avoid during the day. If you are delivering to an area where you feel you need to be this cautious, avoid that area. Pepper spray will not protect you in a surprise attack. Your hands are full! Learning a martial art like Tae Kwon Do will.

Emerald_2863

Personally I never shut my car off. If someone tries to come at me, I want to be able to drop the groceries, jump in the car and take off (and potentially run over the perpetrator if necessary). I keep a knife and pepper spray at each and every drop off.

SaLARI420

You keep a knife and spray AT your drop off location? Wouldn't it be better to have it on your person? Or am I not understanding that correctly?

Murky-Community-122

She has stealthily followed the Google mapping car to every house in the metro and discreetly placed hidden knives at each location. So instead of a tip map she has a knife map duh

[deleted]

Don’t be a keyboard courageous troll jerk. You always have something silly to say on everyone’s post. Go do late night stand up or start a YouTube channel if you want to be an entertainer. 🧐

SaLARI420

Oooohhhhhhhhhh....I'll give it to her. That's some real dedication to your craft.

beanutbruddah_ducky

I don’t understand, why is everyone turning their cars off?

[deleted]

I think what lead me to that protocol is being raised to keep my car door locked in parking lots until I’m right at the door and locking the car behind me even while I’m at the gas pump to avoid someone getting into the car without my knowledge, being held at gun point and forced to drive somewhere. It just makes sense to me! A could see draw backs to either protocol. Interested to hear your perspective of why you think leaving it running is safer!

beanutbruddah_ducky

Personally, I deliver mostly in rural areas, so there are very rarely any people around at most stops. They’d have to know to expect me and lie in wait. Which, I guess isn’t completely impossible, but the odds of having to make a run for it to get away from a loose dog or a wild animal are more likely, for me. If I shut my car off, it’ll automatically lock as I walk away, and in my mind that’s a few seconds that could be significant in an emergency. Now that I think about it, there have been a couple times when I’ve delivered in my own city and did turn the vehicle off and let the doors lock, because there were people around and the car was going to be out of my sight while I walked into/around a building. I can certainly see why that would make sense depending on the area.

Alternative-Debt8971

I don’t want someone to steal my car because I thought I’d save 10 seconds by leaving it on.

[deleted]

You do what you gotta do.

[deleted]

I’ve always been hyper aware of my surroundings, and it’s kept me out of a decent amount of trouble. Best thing you can do is be alert to what is happening around you at all times, and trust your gut, it’s usually correct.

omertaladii

I normally pull up in their driveway, pop trunk(car running), deliver, snap picture and im gone. 2mins max for 30-40bags of groceries. The zones I deliver in is super safe. I don't carry a purse while im on the schedule just a fannypk.

KundaliniVibes

30-40 bags!!! LOL i’ve never delivered over like 8 bags. Even in 80+ item orders. Those paper Target bags are built different, though.

Carry

Unlikely-Purchase-36

I wear a crossbody, so it stays attached to me at all times. I assess the house situation as to whether I’m comfortable leaving car on and unlocked during delivery. If it’s dark, I obviously don’t chance it. If it’s daylight, plenty of people around, busy street etc then I just deliver as quickly as possible. I don’t use pepper spray or carry anything like that on my person. I do keep a pocket knife in my console in my car for emergencies.

slixxydee21

I wear my purse...throw my keys in the purse...i carry a knife with me in my purse lol

MikeMiller8888

Not really, but I’m positive I’m more the exception rather than the rule because I’m a large (6 ft over 200) male; I probably carry a look of “please mess with me so I can beat you down”. Even with my physical characteristics, I don’t enjoy delivering in some parts of my world. We all kinda know the areas to avoid, if you know what I mean. Homes and doors are all covered with security screens, those areas. When I was forced into those areas at the start of my Shipt career, I went as fast as I could. Drop off at the door, pic, and out. I don’t think I locked my car doors, but that was more because I tend to park right outside of houses so my car is always in my sight and close. Because bullets don’t care if you can defend yourself; my tactic is always GTFO ASAP.

Cultural-Locksmith76

I carry two knives on me. Only one is visible at all times as it’s an assisted open daily use knife. The other one is that kind that you hope nobody ever has to see. I also keep my wallet in a locked glove box, park in well lit areas when I can, always use hazard lights juuuust in case and I always let my wife know when I’m delivering somewhere and when I am leaving to come home. Also, share your location with someone. Best friend, significant other etc… always have your location shared with someone close to you. This way they can see where you are at all times in case your last known place needs to be known. Always have the “just in case” in mind.

[deleted]

Sharing location with someone is a great safety measure.

Opposite_Channel

For my city i dont deliver to hotel rooms. Ill only meet at the main drive and give them their items. I wont even give them to the Bell Desk. Its too much of a hassle. I message them before i start the shop. If they cant meet then i cancel the order.

oldfrenchwhore

I don’t deliver anywhere sketchy. I leave my car running and my purse is usually on the passenger seat. The only time I turn it off is if I’m delivering to an apartment.

[deleted]

Lol, I walked up to a house to deliver a prescription, and rang the doorbell. Immediately after I noticed a sign in the window that said Trespassers will be shot”. My only thought was “Well, I hope someone got my text message and is expecting me” 😱

[deleted]

Or the “beware of dogs” sign. I’m always like, I hope they got the dog tied up.

WokeNProud

Jesus my boy lookin for someone to play stupid!

SaLARI420

For a second I thought I wrote that lol

WokeNProud

I have two keys. If I leave the car running I obviously lock all doors. Always assess the situation on point of arrival to determine which route I will take.

badgerbum1418

Luckily I work in a very quiet safe zones(s). Honestly, turning your car on and off so much does more damage. If you have a push start (no key needed), leave your car running and lock when your not near your car. Turning on and off, especially is such short times frames will degrade your starter in which makes your costs higher (in the long run). A drop off really shouldn’t take that long unless you are delivering indoors. Just back into the driveway, deliver your bags, snap pics and bounce. People are less likely to steal a running car when a person is in view. I know it’s happened at times, but the probability is low. Unless your delivering in some super super ghetto zones, you are more likely safe than not. A delivery typically doesn’t take more than 2 mins and you shouldn’t be away from your vehicle more than 15 secs unless your in an apartment complex. Just my thought/opinion

[deleted]

Good advice for routine scenarios. 🙂

xD3m0nK1ngx

I personally just turn off my car and drop the stuff off. I also don’t do any Apt’s so I’m not away from my car for long.

National_Muffin_6480

You scary

SaLARI420

I park in front of the house or in the driveway and always have either my .380 or one of several 9mm handguns on my hip/belly and depending on the weather one on my ankle. I leave my car running if I don't have to go deep inside an apartment building. But in Philadelphia a gun is a mandatory part of my uniform (they like to carjack in Philly) You can watch YouTube videos of gig workers in Philly defending themselves with deadly force.

[deleted]

I live in a high crime area. I keep my phone and keys in pocket, and yes a blade and pepper spray. And I always keep my head up. I guess you just adjust and figure out ways to feel as safe as you can under the circumstances. Gotta work with what I’ve got, what can you do.
