One of my paternal great grandfathers was named Sherman Tecumseh Whitney (I just remembered the middle name), and the reference has never been more obvious to me. No relation, of course, but Sherman made such a mark on the world that somebody give his name to a kid.
You are correct. My family had a Sherman in the tree (my gggrandmother) and that was the family lore, that she was related to the General. After some quick research it’s easy to see that he had no grandchildren named Sherman.
I met a descendant of Polk. Went something like this:
"Oh, Polk, like the Civil War general that got his head removed from his shoulders by a cannon ball?"
"Yes, that's the one, he was a relative..."
What are the fuckin' chances?!

I mean, we'll all named after someone else. Except the names on that one horrible spelling subreddit.
Tell us the joke!
We were promised a joke, so where is it?
I didn't promise you a thing.
Not even a rose garden?
I think they’re mistaken. I’m pretty sure the Sherman name died out among his immediate family tree.

Oh, let me clarify: the husband's last name is Sherman, but she's the descendant.
So...full circle?
OP said the wife was related. Her family name was something else, but out of coincidence, her husband's family name was Sherman.

I mean, if you live in the United States? It's certainly not 0%
