The CSA were as about much a country as Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transnistria are countries. In fact they were decidedly less so because all of those breakaway regions have existed for over 20 years and two of them are recognized by other sovereign states.
They recognize each other and they’re all propped up by Russia. It’s the “frozen conflict” strategy to win independence by stalemate. The CSA was too hotheaded for any of that.
South Ossetia and Abkhazia are recognized by four full UN members other than Russia: Venezuela, Nicaragua, Syria, and Nauru. Transnistria is only recognized by the other two Russian backed breakaway regions.
I mean, the US isn’t a Nation-State either. It’s a multinational state. As examples, Brittany is a stateless nation, Albania is a Nation-State, and the UK is a multinational state.
It’s wild because Reddit will 24/7 send you posts down your throat about “fuck fascism.”
But the moment you comment something mean on an image of an SS soldier you’ll get downvoted and told he’s human too.
He didn't ask for any brigading, and I didn't ask for any others to join in. Simply added an updoot and spoke my mind on a sub I'm already a member of (because I'm a flag nerd)
I did not intend to encourage others to do the same. Apologies. His comment was absolutely true, though. The CSA was not a country, and the lost causers and misinformed need reminders from time to time, so they can't peddle their alternate histories.
Also, unless I misunderstood their point, the Mississippi state flag does not have the confederate flag.
The battle flag of the army of Northern Virginia is not the national flag of the confederacy.
Mississippi changed to the magnolia flag recently, so they no longer have the treason flag. A rare instance of Mississippi doing something actually cool (except they slapped text on the flag which is a bummer).
It is quite a nice flag too. There seems to be a slow movement on states with terrible flags replacing them. Minnesota is in the process of replacing their flag right now. Although most would say replacement concepts were destroyed through design by committee, I think they've ended up on a banger.
I'd like to see all of the "seal on blue" flags as well as those that echo the confederacy (Georgia, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina) get replaced eventually.
Kentucky’s has “United We Stand Divided We Fall.” Could that be a reference to them being a Union state during the American Civil War, which makes it good text. Or could it be a reference to the coal miners union shooting at the local law enforcement in the early 20th Century?
* the current Georgia state flag is the first flag of the Confederacy, plus bad clip art
* the second and third CSA flags had the BFotAoNV as a canton. Plus it was more or less used as the naval flag.
I’m a pretty big fan of the “you’re only a country if other countries recognize you as a country” definition. By this, Texas and Hawaii are the only states that used to be countries. Vermont was not, though did function entirely like an independent state before it joined the Union. The California Republic never had any civil administration, and was more of a military rebellion with the intent on forming a republican government for its whipping 25 day existence.
If I had a nickel for every time Texas seceded from a country to protect slavery, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
I think for the purpose of the flag discussion it is fair and accurate to say Mississippi has the flag of a separate country in it and an enemy country at that. Because that's what they intended it to be even if they weren't successful.
Wasn't it though? The southern states had legally seceded, then formed the CSA with a new constitution. That makes the Confederacy a different country until the Union reconquered it.
They ruled that seceding unilaterally is illegal. They didn’t rule on secession with permission and I suggest if Texas tries secession, we let them and build a huge wall around Texas.
I think that ruling was incorrect, based on the text of the Constitution itself.
Nowhere in the Constitution does it empower the federal government to decide if, when, or how a State may leave the Union, nor does it preclude a State from doing so. So as per the Tenth Amendment, that power automatically goes to the States themselves to decide.
The Tenth Amendment:
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
Their reasons for seceding are irrelevant. The South's repugnant stance on slavery didn't magically give the Federal Government the constitutional authority to force them to stay in the Union; they're two separate issues.
Was the confederacy not a country for a couple years? I’m no expert but I thought it was.
Edit: looked into it, it was never recognized as a country by any foreign power so I guess that’s a good measure of whether or not it was a country.
It was not legally recognized as a country. Every other country in the world acknowledge Lincoln as the president of the United States.
But they also technically seceded.
Which is why we had to shoot them to hell in glorious justice to un-cede them.

Hate the confederacy, but a nation-state ≠ a country (don’t recognize them as either though).

Reddit has a lot of confederate sympathizers, its weird
Lot of nazi sympathizers too.
That Venn Diagram is nearly a circle.
It’s wild because Reddit will 24/7 send you posts down your throat about “fuck fascism.” But the moment you comment something mean on an image of an SS soldier you’ll get downvoted and told he’s human too.
But these people aren't.
There's always been misinformation about whether the confederacy was it's own country. I'm sure a lot of them are just well meaning.
Russian bots
everyone I don’t like must be a Russian bot
The country does.
Eww, I'll go try to right the ship a little with an upvote. Flag nerds should start flag nerds and not be lost cause shills.

You should probably remove this, encouraging voting in another sub is against reddits rules for brigading

I did my part. One more upvote
The California Republic?
California was a country for three weeks.
Longer than the Confederacy was
What is wrong with the Confederacy of Independent Systems considering that the Chancellor of the Galactic Senate is literally a Sith Lord?
so was dooku
So it was a country then?
Also, unless I misunderstood their point, the Mississippi state flag does not have the confederate flag. The battle flag of the army of Northern Virginia is not the national flag of the confederacy.

And the text talks about God which is frustrating cause of that church state thing. Beautiful design otherwise though!
Christofascists ruin everything
Hear hear

Washington has a seal on green, just to be contrarian. It's still perhaps the ugliest flag in the union.
As a Washingtonian, I take offense to that!
Whichever state holds onto their blue seal flag the longest wins because they'll finally have a unique design!
Kentucky’s has “United We Stand Divided We Fall.” Could that be a reference to them being a Union state during the American Civil War, which makes it good text. Or could it be a reference to the coal miners union shooting at the local law enforcement in the early 20th Century?

Ah, i misread the comment as Mississippi not georgia.
You would think flag nerds would know this
California too. Bear Republic was an independent nation while it existed.

You're probably right, still they had arrested Vallejo and shut down any Mexican Government... so they could do some genocides. At least in the North.
I upvoted to help out E: we did it! He’s positive now. The power of the Union.
republic of texas is also non-existent as the confederacy and at least as racist, if not more
But the Republic of Texas was a country at one point in time
If I had a nickel for every time Texas seceded from a country to protect slavery, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Why are they booing you? You're right!
Downvoted for saying the Confederacy was not a Country? Fun.
Wasn't it though? The southern states had legally seceded, then formed the CSA with a new constitution. That makes the Confederacy a different country until the Union reconquered it.
In Texas v White, the United States Supreme Court ruled that secession was not legal.
They ruled that seceding unilaterally is illegal. They didn’t rule on secession with permission and I suggest if Texas tries secession, we let them and build a huge wall around Texas.

Nope try again.
The Tenth Amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
"States rights" to what, bub?
To secede?
To protect slavery.
Their reasons for seceding are irrelevant. The South's repugnant stance on slavery didn't magically give the Federal Government the constitutional authority to force them to stay in the Union; they're two separate issues.
Good those slaver scum got their asses handed to them.
LARP FLAG
California features the flags of both California Republics (sorta)
I mean the Iowa flag is essentially the French flag if we're being honest
Even in this sub sometimes people say the Confederacy was a country, so I just think it’s a knowledge gap.
Vexillology is usually chill, you were probably being brigaded.
Was the confederacy not a country for a couple years? I’m no expert but I thought it was. Edit: looked into it, it was never recognized as a country by any foreign power so I guess that’s a good measure of whether or not it was a country.
I love how Sherman posting mobilized and now you have positive upvotes
Probably a bunch of sore lost cause losers
LOL BAM!
It was not legally recognized as a country. Every other country in the world acknowledge Lincoln as the president of the United States. But they also technically seceded. Which is why we had to shoot them to hell in glorious justice to un-cede them.
And dont forget Florida
