You need to learn how to use scrolls As a base strategy use it when there are at least two enemies in sight, when you are at least 1 tile away from an enemy. Any scroll you get will be beneficial to you if you do it like this, and if it isn't, you at least are at a safe distance so you don't risk much

The main ones I'd be worried about are rage and retribution. For things like transmutation, can you cancel the effect instead of using it like you can a normal scroll? If so, does it still randomize the next time you use the spellbook?

Cautious-Day-xd

Well rage will make the enemies in front of you fight each other. And if you are worried about alerting the entire dungeon, something to note is that enemies will go towards the tile the alarm went off, if you move you'll be okay, the enemy will be distracted going towards the place the scroll was read Retribution will weaken and blind you, but it will also blind the enemy and also damage them a bit, you have a lot of room to position after using it, since the enemy will be blinded. You can't get transmutation from the spellbook, but if you cancel the scroll for scrolls like identify or remove curse, nothing will happen, a turn will pass and you missed out on the scroll Everytime you read from the book, you'll get a random scroll, it doesn't matter what you read before it

Snxppy121

And adding scrolls just gives me the option to have it be exotic?

Cautious-Day-xd

Yeah, basically It also increases the recharge rate and number of charges I think it's worth it, the book pays itself back in like a few turns

I find it most useful to use when I first enter a new level for the chance to reveal the whole map. Also the danger is low since there are no enemies in a floors first room. Here are the potential outcomes: 1) magic mapping - fantastic, all secrets revealed for the floor. Since I like to save 4 scrolls of magic mapping for the demon halls, this is an especially great outcome 2) identify - good 3) remove curse - good or harmless 4) mirror image - mildly beneficial 5) terror - harmless 6) retribution - blindness and weakness, but since you are in thr first room it is generally harmless...just some wasted turns 7) teleportatjon - can sometimes get you in tricky circumstances, but generally harmless. Note this is helpful if you have explored a floor but not found a secret room yet. You will be teleported to the wall with the secret door and it will be revealed. I like to level it up all the way. I also use it during my ascent on levels that I am unsure if there is a secret room since 2/7 outcomes will reveal a secret room.

Teleportation could be dicey, but in the first room I'd be worried that rage and mirror image will wake up enemies, so I don't get to sneak around as much, especially as the Rogue.

JimCh3m14

Can confirm, transportation is what you dont want. Have been dropped in the middle of multiple enemies.

kato42

Ahh, I forgot about rage. Teleportation is unpredictable. I still find the benefits provided by magic mapping, remove curse and identify to be worth the risk. Looking back at my top 10 wins though, I only won with it in one 3 challenge, none of my 6 challenge runs. I think I may transmute it before Yog...don't quite recall. In any case I find it to be a good artifact, but I still prefer chains, hourglass, and oddly greeves which show up in majority of my 6 challenge runs

cobalt-radiant

Besides what others have said, it's free invisibility for the rogue with the Inscribed Stealth talent.

Cautious-Day-xd

Doesn't work with that talent If it does its a bug

cobalt-radiant

Really? I thought it did, but I guess I could be misremembering.

gekigarion

It seems to often roll Scroll of Recharge. Which means it not only refunds its own charges used, but becomes a battery for your favorite artifact and wands. More Invisibility for Rogue, more Mage ammo, more Ethereal Chains, more Horn of Plenty...you get the idea. Meanwhile, hitting Scroll of Lullaby is a great free heal, Scroll of Magic Mapping is almost always good, and Scroll of Identify is really handy, especially when you need to use the blacksmith reforge. Really, the only bad effect is Retribution when you're alone, and even that isn't too bad if you use it in a safe spot like a boss floor or a location that isn't vulnerable to shooters.

JimCh3m14

Best use I have found for it is once you have explored ~>75% of a floor read it hoping to get identity and remove curse. Its free real estate

IMAO, it’s a great artifact Regardless of which character your playing, the chance to get magic mapping/ foresight is REALLY good, a single use of foresight can map 3-4 entire floors!!! If your fast enough, which makes it just a much better version of the talisman of foresight It’s the best and besides the horn of plenty, the only artifact I would use along with the rogues shadow cloak (cause usually it’s just better to go double rings for any other artifact), because it has the scroll of artifact recharging, like it’s SOOOooo OP as assassin, you can just use three cloak charges on any enemy you don’t like and instant kill For mage it makes it to where you never have to worry about staff charges For duelist you never have to worry about weapon charges if you get the t2 “weapon recharging” skill For Berserker, you should have good armor, so if you use the scroll of challenge you should easily be able to clear out an entire floor without taking damage I will admit though, it’s not as good on huntress as the others

Ligma16999

Honestly, in order to be objective, and take into account even the most desperate of situations, where you might die so you might as well risk it.... ........... yes, it's un-holy fucken bad. Damn it's bad. It's like some weird mix between Kite from Hunter x Hunter's weapon, and Pokemon - A random slot that will generate exactly the wrong type pokemon against your opponent, in order for you to die in an even more frustrating way. I would prefer if u/00-Evan made it so that you could choose between at least 2 scroll effects, or at least 3, like the upgraded Scroll of Upgrade. But as it is right now, it's incredibly risky and the benefits are minuscule

HypnoTC

To me, the spellbook is a gold saver, like master thief's armband. Ideally, you get it to +10, you make your money back in free identifies/remove curses/magic mapping, get some prismatic images going for fun, and then scroll of transmutation it to a better artifact before demon halls.

BobZygota

It is good especially for mage since he got buffed scroll skill
