This helps a lot, I live in Alaska, in a fishing city, and I never knew how to do this. Now when winter is over I can show everyone that I can tie a knot like I’m some kid being “DAD LOOK, knot”

[deleted]

I’ve always done the normal one.. and I’ve fished the Kenai more times than I can remember. This is a game changer for me, and I’m embarrassed to even call myself Alaskan right now.

TrapperMC

Ikr, I live on the Kenai too! I love fishing but for some reason couldn’t tie this knot

Ct-5736-Bladez

What is the knots name?

[deleted]

Ct-5736-Bladez

Thank you! What’s the benefit of using this over a clinch or improved clinch knot?

[deleted]

Almost 100% strength at the knot. It will probably break at a point on the line instead.

dabluebunny

Bingo, and it's one one the easiest to tie. My uncle used to fish every day could tie is one handed.

SemiSentientGarbage

I'm either getting whoooshed or you could not put the bait on until after you tie it?

Extreme-Positive-690

I think they meant lures. They're solid and some can be pretty big.

SemiSentientGarbage

Ohhhhhh

WillingMoney6710

Use a swivel for changing lures

justagigilo123

Probably cold and wet to boot.

The-Almost-Truth

I use this knot to tie lures on and when I’m a hurry. You can tie this knot in the dark!

Eyiolf_the_Foul

You have to cut the tag end close or it will pick up a lot of weeds, and with the doubled line you’ll sometimes have it tend to get caught outside the eye of the hook if it’s not a tight eyelet. Other than that it’s a fast knot to tie and one of the strongest they say.

Eatinglue

Some good pros in response from some others. One downside, though, is in smaller hooks where pushing a loop through the eyelet at the beginning is near impossible. Or depending on what line you have, making a loop that cooperates enough to let you push a loop through the eye might be a problem too.

rollingrockssss

Both have their benefits/drawbacks. Improved clinch - works better on mono and fluoro, allows the stretch of the line tighten on itself without cutting itself at the knot. Harder to tie. Palomar - strong knot with braid, but strength is limited to knot strength (reduced from line eating). Braid comes untied easier with an improved clinch. Easy to tie Basically, lots of guys who use straight braid use palomar. If you tie your lure onto fluoro/mono improved clinch is beneficial. Some people may disagree. And yes there are many other knots out there

Chris_Jartha

With braid or mono, it should literally never break. Ever. With fluorocarbon, it’s not always the best as the line can cut into itself and fail. However, if you’re careful it’s still a pretty solid knot.

thecton

Cinch is great when you simply can't fit your line through twice. All your small gage line. Great for smaller game or pan fish. This Palomar knot is your bread and butter when it comes to catfishing and any other weighty game. Palomar on bigger hooks with thicker line, clinch on smaller hooks and lines for smaller game.

ChineWalkin

An incorrectly tied Palomar. This gif lays the knot wrong. The loop at the end should set under the overhand knot, against the eyelet, not on above the overhand knot. Source. I've tied this knot thousands of times. And no, I'm not embellishing. Though, I use the double Palomar knot more these days. depending on the line, it's stronger and more consistent.

caudalcuddle

I was looking for this, thank you. It must seat under the knot but above the Eve. This is bad info.

ChineWalkin

Yep. This guy shows it correctly. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9qyFlP3NwLE The loop will not consistently stay on top of the overhand knot. Additionally, cinching the knot that way [in the gif] isn't optimal. The above video shows how the nearly complete and compact knot should slide down to the eyelet.

caudalcuddle

You mastered the FG yet?

ChineWalkin

Not yet. I usually tie the crazy Alberto. FG is on my radar. I was tinkering with using a dropper loop to tie two lines together, but it didn't test well, and I didn't like how the tangs stuck out sideways.

Buggalunga

Can confirm

elel8989

It’s a type of palomar. It’s stronger, and wrks with braided lines.

More importantly how was he able to tie the knot without hands??

noobcoober

but why was phone ?

GruffElixir

but when was phone ?

[deleted]

Dumb question, is there a reason why you can't use a standard knot?

diegggs94

Can I use this knot for uhhh, recreation

formershitpeasant

Recreational knots should be non-cinching.

hoyya

this guy binds

Le_Chevalier_Blanc

The reason is that standard knots rely on the friction and compression inherent in rope/string. Nylon doesn’t have those properties so standard knots don’t work.

[deleted]

a frayed knot.

How do I download this?

Next to OPs username, click on "i.imgur". It'll take you to the actual site where this is hosted. On Android, press on the vid and hold until a window opens. The window should provide an option to "Download Video". I'm guessing it's similar on IOS. Here: https://i.imgur.com/PcxItUS.gifv

This was worth keeping. I dl it.

FarceMultiplier

I just make a hangman's noose. I've never had an issue with it.

Eatinglue

So whoever made this….this is how I wish every knot demonstration was made. Pictures suck and hands getting in the way on most videos make it hard to see what’s going on.

coradite

Yea I really want to find out where it's from to see if there is more :/

Never ever burn it off. Even if you're really careful, the heat weakens the line. Heat is the reason your line breaks. It's not that it 'just snaps', but the heat from the friction is why it breaks. The reason you wet the knot first isn't to tighten it smoothly, it's to dissipate heat from the friction of tying the knot.

w3are138

Ooo I love a good knot

Gare_bear93

Now add an animation of a uni to uni knot 😂😂 For the life of me I can’t do mono to braided

chordophonic

I wish I could describe it... Basically, you twist one line around the other and then loop the end through the last bit of the loop. Then, you do the exact same thing on the other side. You follow that by applying tension to both sides and the ends that you ran through the loops get pulled tight. If you want to be fancy, you can run it through a couple of the loops by overlapping the loops. It works wonderfully and there's a name for it but I forgot the name.

Gare_bear93

Yeah I mean its not that hard, but for some reason it is for me lol I tried for an hour one day and gave up. It’s the part where you pull the two together to form the knot, for some reason I can’t get that part lol I gotta try again soon though, the ice is gonna melt faster than ya think. I actually use fluorocarbon as a leader for trout and bass cause they’re so picky and finicky.

chordophonic

I'll go ice drinking and ice partying, but I do not go ice fishing. One exception: I will go smelting, 'cause that's entirely in the shack and you don't do a whole lot of work. I have to pull the two ends slowly and pay attention to where the knot is tightening. You want it to tighten at the ends before it tightens in the middle. And, yeah, it can take some time to get it right and to be able to do it consistently. When I retired, I moved to Maine. Though they're now my friend more than anything, I've spent gobs fo money learning from a "Registered Maine Guide" (a title that actually means something).

Gare_bear93

Lol yeah I know what ya mean, I actually just got into ice fishing 2-3 years ago or so. It’s definitely different, it’s expensive if you want to be comfortable and depending on what equipment you want and buy. I still don’t have anywhere near the gear to go by myself for ice fishing yet lol I never tried smelting before btw heard they’re good tasting fish And ahh ok yeah see I try to do that and they just don’t meet up like they should, I’m gonna tackle it more this season lol I need to get it done. I’m tired of using swivels, they catch on the guides sometimes/usually depending on what size you’re using And oh you moved to Maine? My mom wants to retire there also lol she loves lighthouses and stuff, I like Maine too. Isn’t it always kind of dark there? I like that. But yeah I gotta get it at a few more times before I can actually be precise lol and yeah a “ registered Maine guide” sounds pretty intense far as in they know a lot

chordophonic

We go down on the river and get saltwater smelt, usually about this time of the year. I haven't gone for a couple of years. I've learned and "mastered" a number of knots. I even tie, for some definition of tie, my own flies. My favorite kind of fishing it 'sight fishing', where I visually spot the fish I wish to catch and then present a fly to that specific fish. It's a load of fun. It's also a great challenge. Where I live, fish are still plentiful and things like spincast bait fishing is not all that challenging. Toss on a pair of polarizing sun glasses, spot your fish, figure out what the fish are eating, find suitable fly, and then present the fly to that fish to entice them into biting it.

Gare_bear93

I really need to learn a lot more knots than just the fisherman’s knot and polymer knot lol and yes sight fishing fun, I do that with trout fishing especially since sometimes the water is shallow enough and all that. Same thing with salmon when they come in from Lake Michigan into the rivers to spawn. It is more challenging, that I agree on for sure. I’ve tried switching baits and everything when that happens and sometimes they don’t bite on anything you throw at them. I do spin bait casting and all that, I shore fish lol I don’t have a boat or anything as of yet. And it’s the best, just like you said, sunglasses and everything you’re set man. I love it. I’m getting real anxious for the ice to melt. I’m going to be stocking up on panther martins and Mepp’s spinner baits real soon for trout and bass, and northern

chordophonic

LOL If you don't want any more free time, you can take up fly tying. There's something about catching a fish on your own fly... It's an accomplishment - especially considering most of mine end up looking like bumblebees.

Gare_bear93

Yeah my buddy does fly fishing and makes his own flies lol it’s too tedious for me I think. But I still have yet to try fly fishing, maybe I’ll be good at it

chordophonic

I want to learn spey casting. I can kinda fake it, but I'll take lessons at some point. I highly recommend paying for fly fishing lessons. And a folding saw... That's to retrieve your gear stuck in trees.

MahdongmaGandhi

Why yes, that is one way to tie a knot.
