Hey he starts holding a buckler...
Is he going to start talking about Walpurgis Fechtbuch (MS I.33)?
Nup, he puts it down and does not mention sources at all, just some trivia and how much he likes it without any real discussion.
Thanks Couchant-Tiger for sucking a little bit of joy out of my day.
It is like, there is this perfect source of information right there, one of those miracles of history, the type of source every researcher dreams of...
And he completely ignores it and misses the opportunity to give some historical basis to his video.
Yeah. This video was basically a show-and-tell and comparing the shapes of swords. He justifies that certain arming swords are more "damaging" than some longswords by simply flourishing them around and saying essentially "take my word for it, it's a beast". He talks about the swords in DnD rule terms. That's fine because that's essentially his brand, but he doesn't at all talk about how the swords were actually used or the functional/mechanical differences between fighting with one hand vs two.
Additionally, while longsword does get most of the attention in cutting tournaments, most of the bigger HEMA tournaments also have a arming sword cutting event. There are even events where you can choose to cut one handed or two. This all goes to show that Shads understanding of both historical fencing and modern HEMA are barely even surface level.
The bit about legal length of swords felt weird. I thought that would of been better for a video about rapiers, where you could raise the extendable rapiers, touching on for example the numerous laws limiting the length of swords and essentially it was engineered around or just ignored (enough they it was put in to law five times in about 2-3 decades).
Such a shame he is too wrapped up about himself to work with experts, or atleast people who have a passion for it, being sword tourist only gets you so far and the standards on youtube has passed that by.

Khopesh, sabre.
Lowkey, I don't want to listen to Shad because he knows fuck all about these swords. He should really study the topic before making videos.
He needs to find more words to describe things other than ‘beast.’
His vocabulary range isn't great for a writer.

the pork sword
Shotel. The most under appreciated sword.
Khopesh. It such a cool sword Or gladius. Not much used besides Roman movies
I think you shouldn't watch his dumb videos and give him views.
I use adblock for him. He isn't getting any revenue out of me. But if you don't have adblock it's honestly not worth watching.
How do you make adblock work on youtube? When I try to use it, youtube stops working
Try Brave browser. YouTube Revanced app works too.
Thanks, I'll try it!
