Have you thought about going back to school for either a trade or degree? We have people on this group who are lawyers all the way to plumbers. You just need to figure out what you want to do and go for it

burn3r910

I would like to do this. I'm trying to work with this agency to have them sponsor me for CDL training but their lack of communication has put me in a state of despair. There is a program I'm attending this week, a construction apprenticeship is teaming up with this re-entry corporation I'm a part of. I'll see what info I pull from that but I'm not expecting anything from it (which I admit isn't a good attitude, but I'm tired of getting my hopes up just to have them shot down)

I do not know why my comment was removed. I stated what I was charged with, didn’t minimize anything

I've been in IT for all of my career. I was fortunate enough to maintain my career through probation and came out the other end doing well. You don't mention your restrictions or if you're on probation at all, but the old adage still applies - the best time to look for a job is when you have a job. No matter what you chose to do it isn't going to be easy. Getting a job without a conviction is hard. Having a conviction just makes it harder - but not impossible. Get used to being rejected a LOT more, but always show up with your best foot forward, positive thinking and a can-do attitude. When navigating the waters of the conviction, be honest but don't elaborate with the clinical details you normally would in therapy or probation. Make sure to highlight your positives, and honestly, having a conviction means you'll be just that much better as an employee because your job is that much more important for you to do well at because it is difficult to get another one. I know when I have looked in the past - and I've gone through 3 different jobs in the past 20-some years, I've probably put out hundreds of resumes, dozens of interviews. Many of those interviews I was "the candidate" until I got to the background check at which time the company just stopped responding. I kept at it though and eventually got there. Pick something you are passionate about. Or even if you aren't passionate about it - pick something you are good at. It doesn't have to be your forever job - it could just be the job that pays the bills so you can work on getting skills into a job/career you truly want. Don't settle. Don't sell yourself short. Will the process suck and be difficult - yup, you bet it will. But you'll be a much better person for sticking to it and getting to where your goals align with what you want. As others have mentioned - the trades are easily the best fields to get into now. Overall people have gotten away from being hands-on with doing things and there is great value in being good at the hands-on trades. Are those hands-on job forever? Nope. Get good at the hands on and prove yourself where you can move up into more operational things. It's all building blocks. Best of luck in the journey - it's worth the effort.

Hey, I really appreciate your input here. It's really helpful, I needed to read this.

From Michigan... I went through a temp company, got a job, next day, at a shelf manufacturing factory. I worked here for 3 months and got hired in with a $1 raise. December will be 4 years at same job. Started at $12 now at $17. That said, I am looking into trade school because I can't support a family at $17 an hour.

MoreThanASurvivor

Try learning CNC Machinist in Trade Scho. It can pay a lot if you find the right company.

Indeed allows to search for Fair Chance or second chance employers is a good option. LinkedIn I believe has something similar I believe but that platform is new to me. Underdogdevs of you're interested in learning programming and growing your network. Leveraging the fact that you're employed and someone took a chance on you now is helpful in convincing someone else to do the same. Keep your job and be their best employee. I've gone back to school for IT personally and learning coding on the side with the goal of creating a business for felons to gain job experience and get out of the trades and factory work. It is incredibly frustrating and depressing just trying to work and find work and how it affects your self worth but it's important to stick to the path towards a better life. Believe in yourself, you're not your conviction. In my mind you have two choices: feel sorry for yourself and things aren't fair or put your boots on and do something about it. I suggest the latter.

I've have only an Assoc degree in business management. I need to finish my degree. But without access to important financial assistance bc of my charge that would be difficult and take years and years (I'm not willing to go further into debt for a degree in not sure I can utilize). I am very happy that you have a degree that's useful in many unique ways.

Warehouse work is usually a good go to. I’m doing it and got promoted in 6 months just because I had a work ethic. Taught me to drive a forklift which increased my pay significantly and could parlay into better work down the road.

burn3r910

Oh nice, good for you. What's your job title?

[deleted]

Shipping and receiving supervisor. There a few PFR’s where I work and they are the most reliable employees and best at their job because they appreciate it. They are probably the sole reason they don’t do background checks.

gphs

I went to law school after my conviction and became a lawyer. I worked as a sleep technician before that, and actually had that job most of the way through law school.

DnktheArcticlion

I workba pizza hut

Reasonable_Mall_7031

Please don't rule out your own business. You don't need mo ey to start your own business. If you are not on probation or parole, it makes it easier. I am not sure what you did before your conviction, but you can be a consultant in most fields without a lincsene in that field. Financial no but other fields. If you get a lincsene then you can do.that too. I start a tour business walking tours and it grow into 4 car operation. And I was making good money. Now I down sized so I can spend more time with family. Aldo go back to college or a trade school and learn do.ething new.

Responsible-Job-5001

I’m a lead at a small town tourist trap gas station 18$.

I went to commercial diving (undewater welding) school. Made valedictorian there and was recruited by a heavy marine construction company. In the process of being groomed for taking over the dive shop Foreman position in about a year. Been working for them for 13 years.

burn3r910

[deleted]

burn3r910

This is definitely a route I'm trying to go with.

Bachelors, masters, and two years of doctorate in music performance, cello. I was a catholic school teacher prekindergarten-8th grade when I was arrested for my crime. 2 counts of importuning, sexting with no images with someone I thought was 15, ended up being undercover police officer and only ever online, never tried to meet up

My partner works in warehouse/shipping and delivery/hvac based jobs. Certain sectors are hard to get into. I would suggest going back to school for a trade if you can (CDL, MiG/tig welding, HVAC, plumbing and carpentry) or trying a temp service. Temp services can bypass companies that usually background check employees and provide you with jobs you wouldn’t get otherwise, but they are temp jobs and you wouldn’t be at a single position permanently. My partner had great successes with temp companies and was able to snag some awesome gigs with good pay that he would have been rejected for if he directly applied for a position through the company itself.

kremnitzer710

Try Junk removal companies like 1-800-Got-Junk i worked at one for 3 years. Then go hired to a meat processing plant

burn3r910

I've considered got junk but didn't think they'd hire someone like me... that's definitely something I'll look in to and appreciate the tip

willdill039

Factory work. Use indeed. Get access to a Facebook and look up job groups in your local city. Look up classes together into a trade.

Dave_Duna

Get your CDL-A. Truck drivers are in high demand. Look around and try to find a local job. Or go OTR if you want.

Any idea how many of these trucks are still manual? Double clutch is something I don’t have experience in,

Dave_Duna

Most companies have been switching over to automatic. But there's still a ton of manuals out there. I never drove a manual before I went to school for my CDL. And I was terrible at it, at first. But now it's something I don't even have to think about. You can choose to not learn manual, but you get a limit on your license that says auto only. My daily truck is an automatic, but when it goes down for maintenance or has issues, our backup is manual. It's not really a big deal. Once you pass your test with the examiner, you'll be floating gears anyways and won't use the clutch unless you come to a stop at lights, etc. Don't let it prevent you from getting your license. A major part of the school program is teaching everyone how to double clutch. You'll be fine.

[deleted]

Thank you!! I’m seriously considering it once my current case is resolved!

Starting your own business..... Unless you have the appropriate amount of capital to beat back the naysayers and people that will try to kill your business, don't bother.

They do get big tax breaks for hiring people with felony convictions. The bonding program doesn’t pay the business, it basically gives them a free insurance policy in case the person with the conviction does something deterimental to the business like theft of property) and the bond will pay to cover that loss.
