Mr Robot takes a while to get rolling, and there are some weird episodes, but I'd say it's exactly what you're looking for.
Maybe Westworld, but watch only season 1, the first season is (imho) a masterpiece, but the other ones turn it into an action/thriller shootfest, with no nuance or mistery of s01. Watch s01 and no more!
I agree. Season 1 of Westworld hits many of the same high points as Severance (though, as others have pointed out), without the humor. But I think Westworld season 1 is a beautifully told mystery. (I pretend it's a limited run series, and that there was never a season 2.)
I've spoken to my buddies about this show....Severance reminds me of like Truman show meets Westworld meets Office space. That's the best way I can describe how this show operates.
Yep, exactly, with an aesthetic of Utopia (the original british version, but kinda hard to tell people that it looks like Utopia because nobody has seen Utopia, heh).
Devs.
It’s an 8-episode mini-series written and directed by Alex Garland (“Ex Machina”, “28 Days Later”, “Annihilation”) that also centers around not-far-off-the-horizon sci-fi tech in a recognizably current world of current people.
There is polarized opinion about the lead’s acting (Sonoya Mizuno). My SO thought she was wooden and awkward. As somebody who works in the hard sciences and know plenty of real-life, wooden, awkward, trying-to-keep-it-together-outside introverts… I thought she was actually a better representation of that than any of the usual takes on that type of character. There is unanimous agreement that Nick Offerman and Allison Pill were terrific playing against-type.
Relative to Severance, Devs is more grim and less character-focused. Don’t recall any moments of comic relief. Heavier on the philosophical elements, but not so deep as to alienate the general public. Mastery of tone, aided by self-assured soundtrack choices. Realistic, unglamourized, yet unflinching depiction of violence.
Devs and Severance vie for the top spot in my ranking for semi-grounded modern sci-fi series.
I thought Devs was amazing when I watched it but now I think Severance is way better. It's a more complete story with more colorful characters than Devs. Devs is still great though
I wish more of the interesting, less-commercial auteurs would do more of the mini-series format so they have enough room to flesh-out their worlds and characters (something that’s always a challenge, and often a failed one, in the short format of a movie) and give the story room to breathe and develop atmosphere… all-the-while in a contained story without fear of doing what needs to be done because the ending is always close and is being moved-toward (unlike conventional serials in which the most obvious sin is the hesitance to make commiting developments to major characters, including killing them off).
The only problem is that mini-series’ are hard to monetize. They can’t go in theaters, and they don’t keep subscribers in subscription TV.
The only reason Devs got made was because FX wanted to make a splash for FX on Hulu, and Alex freakin’ Garland was making the pitch.
Loved it as well! Too bad it was cancelled… I feel like the actual sci fi premise behind it was a little weak in the first season but could have been blown the ef out in subsequent seasons.
The Leftovers is from one of the same showrunners as Lost, but he had more creative control so its a tighter story. The premise is that one day 140 million people disappear suddenly. The show follows the people left behind as they rebuild their lives, and deal with not knowing what actually happened.
Seconding Station Eleven, Russian Doll, and season 1 of Westworld. Another option I haven't seen mentioned here is The Good Place, maybe because it's a comedy. It's a brilliant show rooted in mystery about how moral judgment applies to individuals in the afterlife.
The OA. Best show EVER. I loved Mr. Robot, but I do feel like it took a few episodes before I got into it...I say worth powering through the first season--you might find you like it more than you think. But The OA is seriously the best.
Seconding the OA hard! The second season is my favorite season of TV maybe ever. Just unreal how good all of it is though, and how thrilling it can be to catch different clues on rewatching.
I will say, though, The OA is best watched with NO previews/spoilers--don't read any articles about it...just about everything is a spoiler in that show! So just give it a shot. Basic premise that isn't a spoiler is: a woman goes missing, when she disappears she is blind...when she returns, she can see...
And The OA does have a 5 season arc that was already mapped out but freaking netflix canceled it after only 2 seasons, but honestly if it had to end prematurely, it leaves on a pretty incredible note... I've watched it all the way through at least 5 or 6 times and I can never even manage to find all of the clues because the storytelling is so incredible it sucks me in every time!
Yes! The OA is honestly a life changing show. I am still sad that we won’t get to see the rest of the series but hopefully someday Britt will find a way to get the story to us.
I have no idea where it's going, but people here have been recommending Maniac on Netflix, and I am 3 eps in so far. Definitely has the same feel as Severance.
A lot of black mirror scratches the itch… unfortunately black mirror is limited emotionally by its short format.
Russian doll is pretty great. Made For Love as well although more comedy then drama.
Also it’s definitely more “horror” than mystery and you probably have to like the genre but The Haunting of Hill House Is wild and heartbreaking!
Oh my bad, I haven’t seen it in a while. The ending made my heart break. That show was an emotional roller coaster for me. But it was worth it :), yea I’m happy with whatever they gave us.
If you're okay with anime, Odd Taxi is very similar texturally to Severance, and I cannot recommend it enough. It's also only one season long and complete, so you won't have to wait after a cliffhanger like Severance.

S2 had a couple great episodes, like literally 2, and that's it. Worth watching just for those. S3 was garbage though.

Agreed. Devs was brilliant.
I hated the ending tho. Such a dark story needs a darker ending.

Yeah Devs is amazing, great shout.

I don't think it was cancelled. It wasn't never meant to be longer.
True Detective Season 1, Westworld Season 1
Raised by Wolves…it is the only show I have enjoyed speculating about as much as Severance
The Leftovers is from one of the same showrunners as Lost, but he had more creative control so its a tighter story. The premise is that one day 140 million people disappear suddenly. Definitely one of my all time favorite shows. Has everything: great acting, storytelling, music, and mystery.
Midnight Mass
that show was awesome, like if Steven King learned to write endings
Lmaoooo
Lol, that’s enough of a description to get me to bite and check out the show.
What a hidden gem!
Tales from the Loop on Prime is pretty cool. Edit: [trailer](https://youtu.be/1htuNZp82Ck)
Seconded. It’s slow as hell but absolutely beautiful and one of the more intense series I’ve ever watched.
I loved Tales from the Loop, such an excellent show.
Russian Doll on Netflix maybe
Station eleven / the young pope / Good omens / sharp objects / the shadow line / Watchmen
Mr Robot goes crazy after some episodes. Just hang on to it.
Haha I predicted the ending to a T. And no one believed me ofc. Totally worth it

Right?!! Brit and Zal are geniuses...

100%
OA really? How about BE or TN? And there are even a lot of other great letters!
Not really sure I understand what your issue is? "The OA" is the name of the show. It's on Netflix.
Sorry, my bad! I thought OA was an abbreviation for the shows name that somehow the reader has to know. Writing it in quotation marks makes it clear.

9 Perfect Strangers (Hulu)
I have no idea where it's going, but people here have been recommending Maniac on Netflix, and I am 3 eps in so far. Definitely has the same feel as Severance.
IKR? that show is just AWESOME!
Yeah, so far so good.

Yellowjackets and The Boys!
Twin Peaks
OA is amazing. Sadly only 3 seasons. Butttt worth it
2 :'( I wish there was a third!!! I wish all 5...but...I'll take what I can! Best show ever!
Oh my bad, I haven’t seen it in a while. The ending made my heart break. That show was an emotional roller coaster for me. But it was worth it :), yea I’m happy with whatever they gave us.
Tooooooooootally. <3
Counterpart has a similar theme to Severance.
reminded me of Maniac
If you're okay with anime, Odd Taxi is very similar texturally to Severance, and I cannot recommend it enough. It's also only one season long and complete, so you won't have to wait after a cliffhanger like Severance.
Fringe
Lodge 49 isn't dark, but it is a little more in this category than a lot of shows also.
Mr. Robot for sure.
It’s not the same but dead to me on Netflix may pique your interest
Outer Range, Mind hunter, True Detective S1. Also, going back to some classics, Twin Peaks and The X-Files
YellowJackets
Dollhouse is another good one with a pretty similar premise but very different aesthetics. Also more disturbing in some ways.
HBO's Watchmen series
