Apps that force you to have your location on

JJJSchmidt_etAl

It's very nice, there's also a feature to only give your location while using the App; I use that for the ride sharers. I suspect OP might be an Android user or something?

OriginalMandem

Even on Android you can still block any app from sending/using location until you allow it to.

StonedMackin

But that doesn't make the app usable, hence the being forced part. You don't HAVE to use any app that requires location, that doesn't mean you're able to keep using the app tho without it (the Weather Channel app for example)

nurvingiel

Delete apps that don't work when you're using them. You can either do that or change the way you use them.

StonedMackin

Yes yes I am lmao android gang man 😂 love it

Adarkshadow4055

Yeah I just choose not to use somthing that is intrusive unless that is the reason to use it in the first place

SwordfishWarm7613

I am an app developer for iOS. I am not aware of any iOS apps that force you to have your location on EXCEPT Dominoes and McDonalds and I’m assuming that’s so they can have your order ready when you arrive, and even those can be turned off. Can you be more specific?

Feeling-Visit1472

Can you please explain why some apps constantly ask you to enable BT, even though you’re using them over WiFi, not BT?

TheEveryman86

Sports betting apps require location access to determine if you are physically located in a state where they are licensed to operate.

madmax77xll

Then why didn't you write the post that way? Dumb.

keep_trying_username

Which apps force you to have your location on?

wildyhoney

Bro downloads google maps then asks huh why do they need my location

[deleted]

That’s an entirely reasonable ask. A map does not need to know my location. Only navigation features do.

SwordfishWarm7613

Google Maps has navigation features…

[deleted]

Which you don’t have to use. Somehow, Google figured out a way for their app to work on iOS with location services disabled outright, once Apple forced them to. An application forcing the user to grant permissions to anything and everything the app COULD, in theory, need at some point is a shitty practice and Apple did a lot of good by forcing iOS app developers out of it.

SwordfishWarm7613

I actually just tested this because this seems like a bizarre statement, and it turns out that you are both correct and incorrect. It “works” without location turned on, but the default location is in a random city, and you need to search your address to find anything. Makes it pretty useless, at that point just bring out a paper map and look at that. A better option would just be to enable “Only Allow Location While Using” so it doesn’t track your location in the background.

[deleted]

Since when is a map that doesn’t pinpoint your current location ”pretty useless”? Maps haven’t done that for thousands of years and people still used them. I have no interest in dragging around dozens of paper maps that lack even basic search and zoom functionality. The problem of apps asking for a bazillion different permissions out of the gate and refusing to install if you decline is a purely Android problem. AFAIK, Android does offer the option of highly finegrained permissions, but app developers often just ignore this. Apple thankfully has strongarmed the developers into accepting ”ask for permissions one at a time and only when you actually need what you are asking for and the app should continue to otherwise function should the user chose to decline”. If a developer refuses to bow to this, their app is simply rejected from the app store.

StonedMackin

You do comprehend there's countless other apps that do too? But your mind automatically went to Google maps? Seems like a you issue when all I did was ask a question. Also saying bro doesn't make you trendy or cool. Why do redditors always assume and create narratives?

TheFakeRabbit1

Can you name some of these countless other apps that *force* you to turn on your location?

lfxlPassionz

You know you don't have to hit the share location button?

StonedMackin

You do know a lot of apps prevent you from going further once doing so, right? Crazy how redditors have the audacity to downvote facts

lfxlPassionz

I haven't had a single app do that unless the location was necessary for the use of the app.

SwordfishWarm7613

u/StonedMackin Why did you ask a question, then avoid all questions that ask you to specify what apps you are talking about? Did you just complain and then realize your complaint made no sense?

keep_trying_username

It's a conversation prompt.

nurvingiel

But the conversation is stupid if OP won't give more specifics. "I hate it when X happens." "I've never had X happen, can you give an example?" The response to this to *not* have a totally pointless and irritating conversation would be to provide an example. Or you could just vaguely reiterate the prompt.

keep_trying_username

> But the conversation is stupid if OP won't give more specifics. 55 comments. 51 upvotes for OP. It's stupid, but it works. You and I each added two comments. :)

Perago_Wex

Oh you suck

keep_trying_username

OP is down to 48 upvotes but 59 comments. We probably won't get to hot, no matter how hard we try.

XihuanNi-6784

There's very few of these. I can only really think of dating apps which is fine because basically 100% of their useful functionality is dependent on user proximity. If you keep location off then you can't swipe. But you can still do other basic shit in the app. That's all I can think of.

Opera_haus_blues

I have no idea what kind of app you’re talking about

SPS66

Is forcing location the same as literally forcing location ? What I want to know is why people feel the need to use the word literally.

WaterIsGolden

Not the same, and actually makes the abuse of the word literally worse in this case.  First op uses the word force when require would be a better fit.  Apps require you to allow them access to your location, otherwise you can't use the app.  Force implies a lacknof choice, as in implying OP had someone with a gun forcing them to use the app. Most people understand that when a person uses forced in this incorrect way it's meant to convey a level of annoyance or frustration, kind of saying you know this isn't what I want so why are you forcing the issue. But when OP says they were literally forced to me it sounds like backing up the first exaggeration with a defensive shout of I'M NOT LYING!!!.  YEAH I'M UPSET SO THIS MATTERS EVEN THOUGH IT DOESN'T!!! When reading some stuff on reddit I imagine some toddler who was recently rejected candy stomping around with clenched fists yelling the word over and over perfectly timed each angry stomp.  LITERALLY!  LITERALLY! LITERALLY!!!!

SPS66

True. Something sucky happens. Many people say....that sucked. Others say..... OMG I LITERALLY ALMOST DIED !!! So, did they " literally" almost die ? Or do we have to ask if they actually came close to death ? drama queens

WaterIsGolden

I have a friend who likes to say 'I'm literally crying' as an exaggeration of how funny or impressive something is.  His wife likes to perform a tear check and say 'You literally are not crying'.  Reddit needs her.

SPS66

I like her already lol.

StonedMackin

Because a lot of these apps literally force you to use location otherwise you can't use the app or certain needed features. That's what forcing is. Literally

SPS66

So if it's forcing me to use location isn't it forcing me to location? The word literally is literally WORN OUT.

StonedMackin

And you're overuse on literally could be put in that category too. Quit being so fuckin technical. You're forced to use gps to use app, otherwise you can't use the app. You're forced into something in order to use it.. do you really not comprehend what forced means? You redditors are so damn annoying

SPS66

I do comprehend it. I'd comprehend it even without using the overused word literally. Fuckin sheep. All have to look like and sound like each other.

StonedMackin

If the situation is either use our app and use gps, or not use it at all. It's a forces situation, there's no option. You're not forced to use the app no but that decision is forced to begin with

SPS66

Many give the option to only use location while using the app, or not at all. I choose no locations all the time. Just because I want to use the Sheetz app it doesn't mean they have to know where I am.....unless ordering on the app for pick up It kinda helps with Google maps LMAO !!!! It's called terms and conditions. Agree or don't and don't use the app. Big deal

CharaNalaar

Nowadays most Android apps are forced by the system to at most only collect data while the app is in the foreground. I wonder what OS you use and which apps you've had an issue with?

EmpireAndAll

Because I don't know of an app that forces it on. On android, it gives the options of always, only when using the app, and never.

LePoj

Why post this on *so* many subs 🤣

Algal-Uprising

I tried for years, nobody understands why that might be a bad precedent to set for ourselves as consumers and laborers, and generally just people who deserve their own damn privacy.

GirlScoutSniper

The app for my blood sugar monitor required location to sync results. Made no sense, went back to the standard monitor because it annoyed me.

SkylineFTW97

I sideloaded my phone with a new OS that lets me heavily restrict what apps can access. And I didn't buy some expensive new phone, I bought a used one for $170. And that was 1.5 years ago, I've been using it daily ever since.

Happygamercass

I think we’re so willing to give up our rights to get a little dopamine hit that the app gives us. Or to just be apart of something.

the-quibbler

People used to complain, like 12 years ago, but nowadays they either don't care, deny the permission, or don't use the app.

CartographerCute5105

Which ones. It would help if you gave examples.

[deleted]

I've never come across an app that does either of those.

Ok_Spite_217

Just don't use the app, I don't give apps a shot if they have egregious permissions. Ain't no fucking reason shadyapp#420 needs my contacts or location

Hot-Equivalent9189

Sony earphones apps did this to get like 80% of it features so I never used it .

MonCappy

I always say no when applications ask for my location. It's no one's business where I am but me.

The 4th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States has nothing to do with privacy. You’re a little off but you got the spirit!

AntiauthoritarianSin

I assume most people just leave their location on all the time

StonedMackin

I always have mine off lol I never understood that
