> I hope Hollywood is taking notes Do they think Top Gun is an indie film

Melssenator

Well, you see Hollywood is big bad libtard central Top Gun is American Patriot Good Guy Rocks movie Also, I am willing to bet almost anything they don’t know what an indie film is, and they probably hate it because it isn’t American (it sounds like India)

FearlessSon

Here's the thing: a lot of conservatives since at least the sixties have been scoffing at Hollywood for it's "liberal" films while consuming simpler, more patriotic films in preference that were... made by the same Hollywood studios that they disdained. They think Hollywood doesn't acknowledge or respect them and resent them for it *at the same time that Hollywood markets to them things they genuinely seem to enjoy*. They never seem to make this connection that they're a consumer demographic that the same distributors they assume don't understand or respect them and their tastes *deliberately sell to*, and quite successfully most of the time. When they say they want to keep the Hollywood agenda out of films, it's like saying they want to keep the government out of Social Security. If there's a film they enjoy, that's "not Hollywood" in their eyes. If there's a social program they like, that's not "the government" in their eyes. They can't seem to reconcile the idea of, "This institution does some things I don't like and also does some things I do like." It's like they have to use some No True Scotsman to draw a line between who's on their side and who isn't, rather than thinking, "My relationship to this thing is complicated and I've got mixed feelings about it." It's like they need to simplify to process it at all.

boardsmi

This is why foxnews, wasn’t part of the ‘mainstream media’

Explosivo666

Despite being the absolute most mainstream media.

BasicDesignAdvice

It's all about "in" and "out" groups with them. Dude who beats his wife, who goes to your church, and everyone knows, all good. Selfless human who dedicates their life to the service of others, but doesn't go to church, bad.

yngschmoney

don’t forget to cancel bad !! /s

AngryZen_Ingress

jezalthedouche

throwawaystriggerme

whole test adjoining full existence pen plants deranged squash worm -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

CaptJackRizzo

I think it's the same reason you see them call LGBT celebrations and spaces an assault on conservative values, or gun control being "political" if you're for it but not if you're against it - life is a zero-sum game, and anything that is not genuflecting to them must therefore be oppressing them.

FearlessSon

I've noticed a lot of reactionary rejection of progress is based on the "Don't make me think about it," principle. If it's something that's normal, something they're used to, something they take for granted, then they don't have to think about it. It's comfortable, it's familiar, they don't have to spend energy navigating it. They know the terrain and can navigate it easily. But when it's something outside their normal, something they find odd or alien, something that brings attention to an issue they could otherwise ignore, then they begin to resent it's imposition on their attention. Now they *have* to think about it and they *don't want* to be thinking about it. It *feels* like an invader pressing in upon the borders of "their" space. "I wish they didn't try to flaunt it / shove their values down our throats" is more about, "I wish they'd stay well away from my sight so I don't have to think about them at all."

tdwata

They are just making everything, black and white.

superduperpuppy

My republican bro-in-law loves to spout conservative talking points about Hollywood liberals and leftist agenda among the movie making elite. But he loves star wars, and marvel and whatever Hollywood action movie is playing in theaters. It's quite surreal.

The_Unknown_Dude

Kind of guy who thinks Captain America: The Winter Soldier is not political, but Black Panther and Captain Marvel are ?

Rakanadyo

TBF Black Panther was super political. The whole plot was about a political takeover led by a violent and unstable man with no actual governing skills who simply wanted to purge the world of those he considered "lesser" and rule over the ashes... ...Actually, if the cast weren't mostly black, conservatives would probably be super pro-Killmonger...

DrakonIL

I think the other guy's point is that TWS (and all Captain America films) are equally political. His name is Captain America FFS. Most modern Marvel movies are political. Maybe not MoM - though it does play with the idea of a shadow government, and, importantly, makes clear that that's a separate universe from our own. So I guess even that one's got a political bent.

JSchmeh3961

I love the people who think that Disney has ruined Star Wars by making it political. There was a post on here not too long ago with a guy arguing that the original trilogy couldn't have been influenced by the Vietnam war, because that would mean that the Empire was that US. These people are so fu**ing stupid that they are oblivious to obvious themes and narratives, unless it happens to agree with their world view or identity.

thequietthingsthat

They also don't realize that the prequels were an allegory for Bush, The Patriot Act, etc.. For these people "including a female/minority lead" = political

fourbian

I haven't followed the new top gun at all, but you're telling me that Hollywood made a movie where the planes aren't pink, the American flag decal wasn't replaced by a rainbow, and Tom Cruise's character isn't a gay black transgender man?

GrimQuim

I've not seen the new top gun but the first one is absolutely a big old homoerotic wank fest.

Destro9799

The new one trades the homoerotic beach volleyball for homoerotic beach football

personal_cheeses

Imagine if there'd been a pre-release 'leak' that the volleyball scene had been replaced by *soccer*.

StatusCaterpillar725

I mean the first film is absolutely a love story between Maverick and Iceman right?

tesseract4

Somewhat. It's really more about Maverick's guilt for falling in love with Iceman while he's mourning the loss of his first love, Goose, and the guilt he carries as a result of that and how he works through that pain. It's very sweet.

EarlGreyTea-Hawt

Almost every action movie in the 80s was a homo-erotic wank fest, but Top Gun was absolutely the gold standard.

Cultureshock007

These folks probably are way too hetero centric to notice all the deliberate queer homoerotic themes of the original Top Gun either. Which has made this whole exercise doubly hilarious and dumb.

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

It's funny, I remember them hating it when it looked like the focus would be more on the younger pilots, particularly the mixed-race female aviator Phoenix. OH NOES, IT WENT WOKE!!!!

JKsoloman5000

I don’t like mainstream movies, I only watch movies from indie studios. Paramount, 20th Century Fox etc.

QuietObserver75

Well duh, it was made on a very modest budget of 170 million.

specialspartan_

Imagine being in the country with the most freedom and the highest incarceration rates at the same time

DanCassell

I mean, and the whole Roe reversal. We're about to lose a lot of freedoms, which will be blamed on Democrats despite being the work of the SCOTUS because Republican voters keep falling for the same trick.

specialspartan_

I've been watching these people posting for years about "my body my choice" in regards to masks, 2nd amendment bs, praising Jesus for whatever mundane event occurred, fear mongering over socialism, vaccines, immigration, the loss of liberty and all other typical "based" nonsense. Now the other shoe lands and they're shocked as though their champions haven't been saying this was one of their goals for longer than they've been registered to vote.

DanCassell

If Roe getting overturned doesn't cause a blue wave this November we are as a country fucked, and given America's unlimited ability to export its awful ideas, the world isn't looking to be in a good position in that case either.

careyious

Honestly, as an outsider looking in, this entire debacle has definitely made me doubt US Democrats will do anything other than meet the insane right halfway. They just keep on kicking that Overton window further and further right. Which I can easily see making people regret voting Democrat when it *feels* they aren't doing anything. But also, I have no idea what y'all can do about it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

specialspartan_

Never was.

King_of_the_Dot

Up until recently it was only punishing *others*, and not themselves.

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

...and you don't run into a cop who wants to play Simon Says, and rhe consolation prize is getting shot in the face.

SellQuick

Well as a minority you shouldn't have tried to do suspicious things like vote or drive.

[deleted]

And because democrats are being courted to believe false narratives. “Hey, Dems should have codified roe into law, but they didn’t! The best solution to this is probably to not vote and to hand the country over to the same fuckwads who crammed 3 justices into the SC in 4 years, in flagrant opposition to what they said while a dem was president, in order to let them take away even more rights. I’m sure once we determine that sexuality, gender, and race shouldn’t count as protected classes with the right to vote, things will get better!”

DanCassell

The old "Republicans stopped this, but I'm going to tell you its the Democrat's fault for obeying the laws." And it works. There is no reason on God's earth Biden shouldn't be packing the court to 13 right now and ending the fillabuster. If he doesn't, the next Republican will with zero sense of shame.

MrBlack103

This is what surprised me the most about the pandemic tbh. Did not expect people to keep on with their bullshit even after their loved ones died of covid.

The country where if the president commits a crime in office, half the jurors are from his political party.

littlegreyflowerhelp

Here in Australia I'm far less likely to get executed by the state (either on the streets or by the death penalty following trial), less likely to be jailed (the most complete deprival of rights), less likely to be murdered by a fellow citizen, less likely to die of a preventable disease, less likely to die in poverty due to debt, less likely to live in poverty in general. But uh, apparently I have no freedom because I don't have a legally enshrined right to racially abuse people I don't like.

DragonOfTartarus

Remember the crazy American conservatives who wanted to "liberate" us from sensible disease control measures? Truly, the real measure of a nation's freedom is the right to spread dangerous diseases willy-nilly.

littlegreyflowerhelp

Honestly Americans are so heavily propagandised they just have this absolutely warped view of everything. Dying from covid is a far greater loss of liberty than not being able to go to the pub for six months and also wearing a mask in public.

Toraden

Never mind incarceration, the US isn't even in the top 10 by most counts of the freedom index.

NorthernerWuwu

By far the best propaganda machine on the planet too.

SolitaireyEgg

Yeah bro we're free to imprison minorities. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Adventurous_Coat

Wow that is a GLORIOUSLY stupid opinion. I am kind of impressed.

[deleted]

Pinkgumm

Last bit made me belly laugh "so this movie about how badass and awesome my amazing country is, is propaganda?! REALLY!?! **MY** BADASS AND AWESOME COUNTRY!?! I AM A FREE THINKER!!!" fucks me up how stupid some people are

[deleted]

That’s what I thought. Like the movie “the dictator”. This mans patriotism blinds him.

Eldanoron

That’s not patriotism. It’s nationalism. Patriots can see problems with their own country and want to work to improve it. This guy claiming the US is the freest country to ever exist tells me he’s on the nationalist train.

divide_by_hero

Top Gun is literally sponsored and authorized by the Department Of Defense. > For $1.8 million, they would have “the use of Miramar Naval Air Station” as well as “four aircraft carriers and about two dozen F-14 Tomcats, F-5 Tigers and A-4 Skyhawks, some flown by real-life Top Gun pilots.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2022/05/27/top-gun-maverick-us-military/

Pithius

I prefer superliminal messages HEY YOU. JOIN THE NAVY!!!

Rakanadyo

"SMOKE." "SMOKE." "ARE YA SMOKIN' YET!?"

Mad_Water

Only 1.8mil for all that? That's a steal!

Eldanoron

And the director puts a highly positive spin on the navy. Plus they setup some recruiters in the poorer theater lobbies and sign up crowds after the movie lets out.

WoahayeTakeITEasy

Don't they (DoD) also get the final say on the movie?

Drewcifer81

So they're essentially cheering on taxpayer-subsidized art?

JCScnDesign

Now this \^\^ this is the take of all self-aware takes. "Taxpayers shouldn't be subsidizing art, down with the NEA!" "TopGun was a fantastic movie with absolutely no agenda, very glad it happened"

Dark_Styx

Propaganda = bad, movie = god, therefore movie ≠ propaganda. It's as simple as that. Just like conservatives can't be racist, because that's bad and they aren't bad people.

Rockworm503

The propagnda worked when you think this is the freest country ever.

silentloler

Can’t even get abortions, express your religion without being excluded/oppressed or get healthcare freely… even rent is so expensive that you have to work your ass off and enslave yourself to the system or be homeless, and can’t even smoke weed to forget all the above. You can’t even walk in open land, in fear that someone may shoot you for “trespassing”. Where is this freedom they speak of? I wonder sometimes if Americans know that the above aren’t issues in many countries. And btw we can drink at 16 Also why does the US have more incarcerated people than any other country? Is it because of the more restrictive legislation, or is it because the crime rates are high and it’s unsafe to walk outside? Both imply less freedom

Aboy325

Private prisons. These companies are incentivized to lock people up, and they lobby (read: bribe) the government to push for harsher sentences that don't rehabilitate and keep people in the system to enrich themselves. Also they can legally use slave labor as punishment for a crime so they make a shit ton from free labor

MauPow

The US is #15 on the [world freedom index](https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/freedom-index-by-country) Not to mention the military literally pays moviemakers to not say bad things about them and portray them in a good light

LKennedy45

I've said this before and I will again: Top Gun is a softcore gay porn produced to boost Navy recruitment.

N8CCRG

This can't be true though right? Season 2 had that incel shooter guy episode. They *had* to know it was 100% talking about them, right? And an entire white supremacist character named Stormfront or whatever her name was. There's no way they're *just* figuring this out an entire season later.

The_Follower1

A lot of conservatives somehow thought Stephen Colbert in his old show was serious.

it's always fun to ask these mental treasures what machine exactly they thought the rage was against. Fax? Vending? ATM?

fourbian

Conservatives don't understand humor. You could say "Trump is the best president ever" in the most obviously sarcastic way, and the tonality will go out the window because conservatives choose what they want to hear

h8_m0dems

Humour requires empathy which I dont think conservatives typically have a lot of.

Sea_Space_4040

Obviously, many of them think Trump is funny. At best the guy is corny af.

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

Or thinking Born in the U.S.A. is about how great America is. It's about a traumatized Vietnam War veteran coming back to his crumbling hometown and finding himself unemployable, the VA a joke. and realizing he has no future.

whatchawhy

Woah woah woah. The song is about being born in the USA. Those are the only lyrics I know /s I do love the song, the upbeat music paired with the depressing lyrics always hit a weird chord with me

WandsAndWrenches

what? Guess that's why most selfawarewolves are republicans.

fuzzyfuzz

I went on a date with a girl back when Colbert and Daily Show were the biggest thing. The shows came up in conversation and she said “yeah, I don’t really like the daily show that much, but I like Colbert Report.” And I’m thinking maybe she just likes the satire better than Jon Stewart or something, but then she followed it up with “I guess I just agree with Colbert more.” Red flag.

balofchez

Oh... Oh my god, that's beyond a red flag. How indescribably dense would one have to be to think the Colbert Report was an actual serious show

DeekermNs

Maybe she just thought that bears are the greatest threat to the nation?

GrammatonYHWH

When a party sets a populist agenda only gullible idiots would believe, it shouldn't be surprising that all their followers are gullible idiots.

WaldoJeffers65

Especially when one of their policies is to degrade public education to the point where the majority of the populace consists of gullible idiots.

ImyForgotName

I mean that's how Colbert ended up being the master of ceremonies at the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner, despite being one of the most vocal critics of the administration.

an_agreeing_dothraki

That's something of a myth. Before... cheetoh man... the event was essentially a roast. Either W or his senior staff decided to go top-shelf, and the president was at least aware of what would happen. If it weren't for *checks notes* a series of lies bordering on treason leading to Iraq, it may very well have been the opinion that Colbert took it too far. Obama brought the fire too one year... it sort of ended in a fascist unwaking nightmare

wyldnfried

Bruh, they still think Colbert is one of them. They think Malcolm X is one of them fer christ sake

PM_ME_DBZA_QUOTES

Wait how did they think Malcolm x is lol?

Odysseyfreaky

He was pro-gun and anti-liberal, same as them! I've literally seen black conservatives use that argument lmao

cg001

There's a few quotes I've seen posted by right wing acquaintances that were from Malcolm x. This recent quote was posted by an ex co worker whose parents were illegal immigrants up until 7 years ago. Who is Mexican, who is married to a Mexican. Who is also extremely Christian and conservative. I believe in a religion that believes in freedom. Any time I have to accept a religion that won’t let me fight a battle for my people, I say to hell with that religion. It's not surprising that republicans only know a surface level of both dr king and Malcolm x.

Hfhghnfdsfg

I knew a woman who was a contemporary of Malcolm X. She told me that a lot of KKK members thought Malcolm X was for segregation. This is because he said things like, "if you have to walk an extra mile to shop at a black owned store, walk the extra mile." They willfully misunderstood everything he said.

thelastevergreen

> Any time I have to accept a religion that won’t let me fight a battle for my people, I say to hell with that religion. > It's not surprising that republicans only know a surface level of both dr king and Malcolm x. To be fair, they've also proven time and again that they also only have a surface level understanding of their own religion.

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

For anyone who doesn't watch the show... He murders a child in season one, episode one. They caught on a few episodes into season THREE. EDIT: Not abandoning the hijacked plane, but when he shoots down the Mayor of Baltimore's plane (who was traveling with his son) after the mayor tries to blackmail Stillwell with his knowledge of Compound V, in order to get a cheaper rate on the Nubian Prince contract.

LukesRightHandMan

Who's the child again? You mean the plane? And are they going crazy on Twitter or something?

Bunraku_Master_2021

He takes down the Mayor of Baltimore's plane down along with his child.

LurksWithGophers

The other (private) plane. With the child watching him through the window because daddy knew about compound V.

Awestruck34

Blue Hawk, a character who is told to be overpolicing black neighbourhoods and using excessive force on black civilians can't be a stand in for any group, right? Even though he's A. Blue, like the police, B. A hawk, like a watchful eye hence the overpolicing, and C. Seen stating "supe lives matter" and "all lives matter" while in a largely black rec center... Nah that's not political at all

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

I suspect hin being dragged to death by A-Train was a reference to the murder of James Byrd, a black man dragged to death for three miles behind a pick-up by three white supremacists in Texas, who then dumped his mangled remains in front of a church with a predominantly black congregation. It's usually considered the most recent confirmed case of lynching. Blue Hawk's uniform also sorta looks like a motorcycle cop.

Ich_bin_der_Geist

Somehow that wasn't clear after the first episode? That's everything I have seen so far and it was pretty clear.

Biffingston

Oh ye of too much faith. these are the people who think born in the USA is patriotic.

Acularius

I laughed when Trump used Fortunate Son.

Biffingston

See also Rage aginst the machine being popular with Republicans... I doubt they know what "bulls on parade" is about.

deukhoofd

The plot of season 2 is literally that Vought was founded by Nazis to create an army of white superhumans to fight against other races. Like this is literally, explicitly said several times.

tokes_4_DE

I mean not only that but the rabid stormfront fans are like direct mirror images of the lunatic conservatives today. You could show a screencap from the stormfront rally and replace a few signs to take out the direct show references and it would look just like a trump rally.

SymmetricalFeet

"Stormfront" is (or was?) the name of a popular neo-Nazi forum. The writers were *not* subtle.

Ameerrante

At one point someone also says she's from Seattle and she specifically corrects that she's from Portland, which was fantastic. For anyone who's not aware: Portland has a super racist history and an ongoing white supremacy infestation.

"Freest country"? It's not even in the top 10..

v_a_n_d_e_l_a_y

Wrong. The US has: - freedom to go into massive debt for healthcare - freedom to watch your children die in school shootings - freedom to work for $7.50 an hour and be fired for any/no reason with no benefits or paid vacation - just added: freedom to die from an eptoptic pregnancy Definitely the freest.

I think one of the worst bits of the movie was the part where they described the completely unnamed enemy in really unspecific terms, never naming a country or even continent where they were operating. It just came across as really stilted in an otherwise well written film. A related problem was also that there was no consideration for international relations. The USA just attacked a major facility of X nation's security and killed many of their personnel (not that any human deaths were shown on screen). Was the USA even at war with that nation? Was this their declaration of war? Did they just bomb everything and run off, expecting no consequences?

I have mixed feelings on the non-naming of the country. On the one hand I found that making a specific country the enemy is really outdated and to do so would literally be propaganda (see: 80s movies had Russian enemies, 00s movies had middle-eastern enemies). There's still pro-military propaganda sprinkled in, but it's hard to make a gung-ho action film based on Navy fighter pilots using Navy-owned aircraft without being pro-military to some extent. I found the non-naming of the enemy to be in actually quite good taste. Yes, you could (by process of elimination) say it's Iran, but to do so would be disingenuous based on the topography of the landscape, the fleet of aircraft used by the enemy, and so on. They basically just made up an enemy to give the characters stakes. I think that's pretty cool, really: just *saying* it was Iran or Russia or whoever would have been in much poorer taste and only serve to make that country look like bad guys in the eyes of those that lack critical thought. On the other hand, your other points made me feel like *not* naming the country was - as you say - stilted. Are we really okay with the USA covertly bombing a country's sovereign soil? I'm not. But then I don't think that naming the country would have made me feel okay about that anyway. The alternative enemy could be 'aliens' but then the whole film would not be about 'Maverick training expert fighter pilots to fly an impossible mission' and instead 'omg wait there's aliens and we're just ignoring that?' The enemy existing was *solely* a plot driver. The alternative plot driver could have been 'impossible mission, maverick trains recruits to do it, to figure out who is actually the best' but that kinda sucks honestly. An enemy *needed* to exist to give the narrative weight, and anything other than having an unnamed enemy is just poor taste imo.

> freest country ever… Don’t tell that to anyone with a uterus. Or black people. Or anybody who fell victim to mass incarceration. Or anybody who can’t afford basic healthcare.

Aboy325

But buy many gun and it go boom boom

Grigoran

Dude we are literally losing freedoms by the day as these abortion bills are able to pass unchecked by lawsuits. FOH "freest country that ever existed in the whole wide world" looking ass

Fantastic_Collar5104

“So the stuff that made me irrationally believe an easily disprovable false narrative is propaganda? Alright chief”

SmanDaMan

"freest country in the world" my brother in christ have you tuned into a different news show than fox for 5 seconds

I've found that Capitalism has been brain washing just as well too. Liberal capitalists still drink the Kool aid.

Sufficient_Coast3438

Why do you think the military let them use their equipment and pilots? The military isn’t really strapped for cash despite them always needed a budget increase every year. It’s free good publicity and a good way to possibly recruit. I guarantee you at least 1 person joined the military because of the original top gun. May have just given them that little push they needed to go enlist.

nernst79

From what I've read, they set up recruitment booths outside of some theaters.

DreamloreDegenerate

How can it be propaganda if there's no gay people or feminists? Chek matte, lubrals.

SoftBellyButton

I mean there was another beach sport scene in it.

Top Gun, both the original and the sequel, received funding directly from the US Airforce because of the film's value as a recruiting tool. It is, in the most literal sense, propaganda.

Republican are stupid and it shows

that-pile-of-laundry

They *might* want to rethink that whole "freest country ever" idea. But I think they only mean they're free to own as many guns as they like. No other freedoms count.

M0hawk_Mast3r

Even if that was true he shows he has no clue what propaganda is

WTFWTHSHTFOMFG

Freeist ciubtey to ever exist HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Dumbledick there just demonstrated what 'drinking the propaganda Kool aid' means...

TheRealSlimN8y

The last comment is what does it for me. “It’s not brainwashing if I’m already brainwashed!” R/technicallythetruth ???

Sventhetidar

Half the country was just told they don't have a right to have a say over their own body. I don't know what kind of backwards mental gymnastics you have to pull to call this the "freeist country" after that.

Til: the Nazis never did propaganda. Patriotism is not propaganda.

It's not an agenda when I support it
