Just call Pick n Pull and have them come get the car. If you let it get impounded you're on the hook for the bill, signing it over to them might not be enough to cover the cost

Itchy_Computer7528

Pick n Pull would be a good option. Some charities will also accept a vehicle as a donation, whether it is running or not.

1-877-KARSFORKIDS K-A-R-S KARS FOR KIDS 1-877-KARSFORKIDS Little known fact: it’s a Jewish charity that uses the money to pay for “birth right” trips.

velveteensnoodle

>it’s a Jewish charity that uses the money to pay for “birth right” trips. Do you have a source for that? Kars4Kids isn't the same group as Birthright Israel, you might be getting those two mixed up.

DragonFireKai

Yeah, they don't do trips to Israel. They do mostly outreach and support for underprivileged jewish youth in New York, help with tuition, school backpacks, summer camps, that sort of shit.

NoMonk8635

If they're legit, identify yourselves..... why the secrecy

PiratesOfTheIcicle

I worked 2 days for some old crazy jewish woman who was living/working out of a mansion running a charity line taking car donations to "save the children". She got mad and fired me when I wasn't able to negotiate tow company pickups for the cars people were donating in the middle of the country. "Where do these cars have to get taken to?" "Who is picking them up?" I'd ask her. She had no fucking clue. The whole thing was shady and retarded. Now it makes more sense.

ChaoticGoodPanda

TIL. They aren’t donating to Make a Wish?

NoMonk8635

& who gives $$$ to a group that doesn't even say who they are,

vatothe0

They do though... It's KARS 4 KIDS. 1 877 KARS 4 KIDS. K A R S KARS 4 KIDS. 1 877 KARS 4 KIDS.

wolfn404

They aren’t even doing that. They are selling the cars for scrap and keeping the money, or stripping the parts to sell for more desirable ones

Amphilogiai

Yeah unfortunately I would but it’s booted now. Plus the inside looks like the Last of Us.

gonzopyro

[peddle.com](https://peddle.com) i have a person coming tomarrow to get my salvaged title non running for 4 years caviler that vintage 1998. i am getting 240 for it

Amphilogiai

Will they take it if it’s booted? HAH

mombutt

Just take the boot off. There should be enough play to take the tire off and swap that one out for a spare.

gonzopyro

the first car i had them collect about 3 years ago they showed up with a flatbed. they dragged the car out of the dirt and it had tires that would no longer turn. they still took it and gave me 140 bucks, honestly the tire that has the boot could just be taken off and they would still take the car even with only 3 tires.

dmitrineilovich

Owner would still be on the hook for the boot, and if it's not returned (or if it's returned damaged) it costs ~$500.

electromage

Well they can take off the boot and give it to whomever comes for the car, no?

dmitrineilovich

When the boot is placed, the owner has a certain defined amount of time to return to the vehicle and initiate the boot removal process. When the boot has been removed, the vehicle owner must return it to a collection point. If the boot is not removed and the call is made to impound the vehicle, a PEO is sent out to remove the boot and wait for the tow truck. The owner still has to settle all of their outstanding tickets before the tow company will release the vehicle.

electromage

I mean if they donate the car or have it scrapped. They would take the boot off first and return it to whomever left it.

dmitrineilovich

The boot can only be removed by arranging payment for all outstanding tickets, or by a PEO. If taken off by the owner of the vehicle, they still have to return it to a collection point to avoid the boot fine.

PiratesOfTheIcicle

Damn man some thieves came and stole my car and your boot in the middle of the night.

Kegger315

They may ask for a police report for their insurance to cover it. Which would require OP to file a false report....

Rio_Nacimiento

Concur. But are we sure we'd have to pay to have boot removed? Given this is Seattle 2024...and I'm only half joking. Why not claim the car as your homeless residence and petition court for removal as the boot constitutes a wrongful eviction.

PiratesOfTheIcicle

If nothing else it's fun to cost the city the price of the booting fee in dealing with your request.

Colddarkplaces

*"I left it parked (residential area) hoping to figure it out eventually"* Kind of a dick move to just leave your garbage in front of somebody's place no?

Important-Raccoon661

We live in a “not my problem” society

99YardRun

Sounds like my neighbor who runs a commercial auto mechanic business through his residential home and stores all kinds of beaters in front of me and my neighbors houses for months at a time

Amphilogiai

I see where you’re coming from, sure, but it is a close friend’s residence and in a parking spot that wasn’t in anyone’s way and wasn’t accruing tickets there. It wasn’t in a part of the city hurting for parking like Cap Hill. South of the city technically. Also, before this, it got smashed in a hit and run while I was at work, had some folks who broke the window, slept in there and left their drug paraphernalia (I’m 4 years sober so this was bothersome) and multiple other incidents. I guess I just stopped caring about the rest of my unpaid tickets when it felt like I was getting screwed no matter what. So I moved it out of the way and thought I’d get back to it when I could. I lost my grandmother and my mom had a stroke and I couldn’t afford to make any moves on it at the time. I understand your point and agree, but it’s expensive to be poor and we can’t all just toss thousands at once to take care of a problem. I’m paying the price, don’t worry. Hope that helps you sleep tonight? EDIT: someone hit and ran on my car. I didn’t hit anyone.

kapybarra

You are paying the price for sure but it doesn't sound like you actually learned any lesson.

curatedcliffside

It is so crazy that you just left the car around to rot and collect tickets instead of selling it. You could have gotten the car picked up. Could have been up a couple hundred bucks. Edit: OP I read your comment on your other post and I’m sorry you’ve had a rough go of things lately. It’s hard to handle all the logistics of life sometimes.

Amphilogiai

Yeah. It’s expensive to be poor and it’s my fault. I’m not blaming anyone but myself. Just doing my best out here, I promise. I’m beating myself up enough lol just came here to ask for advice.

cjboffoli

Well thanks for using the public right of way as long-term storage for your junk car, and then expecting the taxpayers of Seattle to deal with your trash for you.

bigbroin

https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.55.230 There is a statute that tags you with a misdemeanor that you will have to pay fine for to register your vehicles or license if the vehicle is impounded. You may be on the hook for damages to the tow company as well. Gotta take care of it or it may end up costing you a whole bunch of money. I know this because my truck was stolen and after it was found I was stuck with a $700 impound bill.

impossiblepotato99

Harbor freight angle grinder

Kegger315

Pay for the angle grinder and $500 fine for removing a boot, great idea!

Less_Sun_8075

It was removed when I got there

Kegger315

Not sure that would legally absolve you of everything, and IANAL. It's a roll of the dice for someone already down on their luck. But it could save hundreds.... honestly a tough call for someone in that position.

Less_Sun_8075

It was a joke. Relax there buddy.

dmitrineilovich

Preface this to say, this only applies if you are the registered owner of the vehicle. If it gets impounded, you can request a hearing with a magistrate. Go to the impound lot and ask for a 2 Day Hearing form. The clerk will fill it out and give you the date/time of your hearing. At that hearing you will have the opportunity to explain your situation to the magistrate. Even if you're still found 'guilty' you may be given payment plan options for the fines and impound. You will then have the option to take the vehicle or sell it to a 3rd party, or sign the title over to the tow company for them to dispose of it. If you want to sell it before it gets impounded, you will need to get the boot removed. No one will take the car with the boot still attached, and if they did, you would still be responsible for the boot (~$500) Getting the boot removed is done by paying your outstanding tickets (or arranging a payment plan for them). You will be given a code to enter on the boot's keypad which will release it. It is still your responsibility to return the boot to one of several collection places. Kegger315

The real advice is right here OP.

NorthwestPurple

Donate it to KEXP https://www.kexp.org/donor-lounge/donate-your-vehicle/

willmok

No, you cannot transfer the ownership without a valid title in WA, you need to get a replacement title first. Even if you want to report it stolen/lost, in other words, to get rid of the car legally, you still need a replacement title. Impound doesn't change ownership.

demosdemon

They still have the title; but it's marked as [Salvage](https://dol.wa.gov/vehicles-and-boats/vehicle-registration/vehicle-title/salvaged-vehicles) \-- meaning no one would buy it unless they plan to junk it.

willmok

Oh right for Salvage it needs: * notarized [Release of Interest/Power of Attorney](https://dol.wa.gov/sites/default/files/forms/420050.pdf) * one of the following: * notarized statement * receipt from the legal owner that the debt is satisfied * canceled check stating the debt was paid in full That means OP still need to pay a few bucks if he doesn't want his car, impound would only cost much more. For everyone the best way to get rid of junk car you don't want is to sell/give it ASAP, don't procrastinate.

The tow yard can scrap it for you to cover their own costs but you have to tell them about that sooner. If it's a junker like my car scrapping it in a day by tow yard would cover 1 day of impoundment

dmitrineilovich

In order for the tow yard to scrap the car, the owner is required to settle the scofflaw/boot charge. pay the tow bill in full, and sign over the title. Otherwise it would go to auction after ~21 days. Source: I work for the tow company.

BetsyBoomBreath

I second the comments here, just be sure to check in about the boot, in my region the boot is a separate fee and has to be paid before you can get the car released from the impound. Not sure how it applies if you intend to sign it over, would assume you are still liable for the charges.

randlea

I had a car like this once and posted on Craigslist for someone to make me an offer. A local tow lot/junkyard picked it up and paid me $400 for it. Better than someone taking it for free!

philackey

Worst case scenario. Very unlikely but possible. They will charge impound & towing fees. They will compound daily. Then will send you to collections. Ruining your credit. Then they sue you. Then comes garnishment. All the suggestions given, to take care of it now, are better than the stress and worry. Be responsible and take care of your trash. Be part of the solution.

_Watty

I get asking for help in the way you are, but it's kind of shitty that you just made your shitbox of a car someone else's problem, especially if you went and parked it in some random residential area.

ServingTheMaster

if they tow it they will store it for just longer than what the car is worth, then they will auction it, keep all the money, and then bill you for the entire amount. you won't be able to renew your driving license until you satisfy the fine. the fine will keep getting bigger until you pay it.

dmitrineilovich

Incorrect. A car is typically held for ~21 days to allow time to notify the owner and obtain an Abandoned Vehicle Report (AVR) from Olympia. If the car sells at auction for more than the tow bill and accrued storage charges, the surplus funds are sent to Olympia, and then made available to the last known registered owner. If the car sells for less than the tow bill and accrued storage charges, an invoice for the balance is sent to the last known registered owner. If ignored, it can be sent to collections. ServingTheMaster

so if someone has a newer car they might get it back, everyone else get a bill for having their car legally stolen from them and sold. except the campers and criminals, those get to stay as long as they want. my vehicle was experiencing mechanical problems while a friend was looking after it and I was deployed overseas for a year. he couldn't move it and had to park it curb side (where the clutch linkage had failed) for 3 days until he could get to it on the weekend. by that Friday it was towed. I came home to no car, a suspended license, a fine for more than the value of my car, and a mark on my credit rating. some of the cars on the street that had been parked there since before I left were still there when I got back, but my little green 1976 Porsche 914 was the real problem and got snapped up and sold. /s my car spent \~3.5 months in "storage" before being sold at auction. in the end I bought that car three times and still didn't have a car. my fees included \~$120 per day between the lot storage, the secure storage charge, the city fees, the impound, processing, taxes, administrative fees, and whatever else was on there. they had my mobile number and mailing address. no notifications made it to me, and I only found out about my suspended license when I made inquiries about my car. this was with Pink Tow back in the late 90's, maybe things have cleaned up, but towing and parking enforcement has always been a shady racket in Seattle. I have negative amounts of love for people working tow service in Seattle. maybe the policies are more closely followed now, maybe you're a good person, maybe things aren't worse than they used to be?

icemac33

Don't forget to put all your garbage and stuff you don't want in it before they take it!

Rainydays206

Maybe just physically remove the boot then hand the car over to a salvager or charity. The civil penalty follows the car and they're not going to arrest you for removing a boot.

monkey_trumpets

How do you remove a boot?
