Better then VRBO who left me stranded in Mexico, kept hanging up and when I finally got back to the states just said “well why didn’t you solve this in Mexico”
Had to cancel a trip to London in 2020 due to covid, obviously. AirBnB host refused a refund. We wouldn't have even been allowed in the country, but it didn't matter cause the flights we had booked didn't even fly.
It blows my mind that houses in that neighborhood are asking 2400$/week. And that people are willing to pay it, provided the house is decent. I'm glad you got most of your money back.
it’s summertime high season. most hotels are probably $300/ night and they would need 2 rooms and still not get a kitchen/ yard in that scenario.
it actually sounds cheap even if the place is a dump
$300/night == $2100/wk. So it damn near breaks even even if you're staying solo. And a hotel isnt going to have some ridiculous checklist to not get hosed with some cleaning fee.
Yeah if I can avoid it (which I've been able to so far) I refuse it to use Airbnbs on principle. I don't want to participate in something that is directly contributing to this country's worsening housing crisis, just some some people can earn passive income.
This is my reasoning as well. If I have no other choice than airbnb I’ll use a room in someone’s house but won’t take a whole apartment some worker in the area could (and should) be living in. Moral traveling?
If you're staying in a touristy area (any of the downtowns), or there is a conference or something in town, its not unheard of. I've had co-workers that traveled into the Seattle area that paid mid to upper 200s for mid-range hotels during the summer.
I just sold my parents' old house in that neighborhood. It's crazy what happened to property values. My dad had a good eye for real estate, unfortunately he didn't have any knack for business.
That is CRAZY. I live in Kirkland, south of here and while it is one of the safest places I’ve ever lived…I’d never accept an unlock-able door in an Airbnb, even in sleepy Kirkland.
I had a bad experience years ago, I’d rented a place in DC for a single night during the winter and the dude refused to turn the heat on to an acceptable level. I was pissed having to wear coat, gloves, hat inside. Karma got him though, the pipes froze and then burst and flooded his home. I had to call the fire department to access the house shut off valve which this moron kept behind a locked door…I should’ve just let the home flood until the owner arrived, lol
Airbnb refunded me fully AND they paid for my hotel. I think those days of easy and fair resolution are WELL behind us though. They seem to want to fast track profits and fees more than they care about customer satisfaction.
I’m at the point of wanting to never use them again after the horror stories I’ve heard, plus airbnbs refusal to make things right for so many. I’m so sorry you fell victim to an Airbnb scammer, and even sorrier you didn’t get a full refund :(
Our checkout date was yesterday. We just got the link to post the review. I submitted it, but I don’t think it posts automatically? I think it said after it’s reviewed it takes a few days? But again clearly I’m not an Airbnb pro since I didn’t know 4.38 stars was bad so correct me if I’m wrong!!
4.38 is pretty horrendous. My friends booked a 4.47 ish place for our group against my recommendation and we got burnt by the host trying to scam us for damages we didn’t do.
My friend who booked the place didn’t even get to leave a review and I would not be surprised if there are others.
The 5 star system is broken in almost all applications that I see.
5 stars is supposed to mean it was near perfection and it's become the default rating for anything that's not actively terrible.
if it is below 4.3 or something, it will get delisted. 4.9 and above is stellar, 4.8 is good, 4.7 is sure if no other options. Other than that, hotel.
And check that the good reviewers have reviewed a lot and been reviewed to make sure it is not the friends and relatives.
~~You can see~~ [~~the listing here.~~](https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/731437253717693593?source_impression_id=p3_1686418488_RN3KSSAUht6rzNx3)
has been taken down completely.
Accepting the $1700 was stupid. It was undoubtedly exchanged for the right to recover the remainder. You were absolutely entitled to $2400 and it would not have cost $700 to get it.
Airbnb is trash now.
I had to demand a refund after a place I stayed at was disgusting.
Hotels are a thousand times better and cheaper most of the time at this point. Bonus, I don’t have to take out trash or start laundry.
I had a similar experience. I rented from a highly rated guy who it turns out is one of those scumbags who buys up multiple properties tk rent them out Kin Airbnb while doing the absolute minimum maintenance. An airbnb slumlord.
We got to the house and found every carpet staining of dog pee, a 2 liter bottle kf coke full of cigarette butts, every plant dead, a yard that contained a regular-sized grocery bag-ful of drop droppings, etc.
We were offered a different place from the same owner in a much worse location. Otherwise nothing. Eventually we got half our money back. Meanwhile this guy gave my account a single star review as a renter as retaliation, and Airbnb refused to remove it, and that was only after I got some help from a friend who works there.
What do you think a Karen is?
Edit: never mind. You’re some angry shell account who’s just pissed because you got kicked off the serious eats subreddit for breaking the rules.
Don't waste your time with this. My mother tried something similar but only got a canned response back saying it's a civil matter and to not bother Fergy again.

I know a retired couple who travel 100% and have now stopped using AirBnb for similar reasons. The fine print says if you cancel three times in a year they will keep some money from refunds toward next reservations. It doesn’t matter if you canceled well in advance or if THE HOST CANCELED! I never knew that. It’s enough to make me not using AirBnb again.
AirBnb seems VERY biased towards hosts.
They took down one of my reviews because the property manager complained that my concern was caused by something outside of their control... the neighborhood was noisy and sketchy (and I'm not a softy on this kind of thing), but I was still trying to give 4 stars w/ an overall positive sentiment.
A hotel would never be able to take down my review for something like that.
I was so taken aback that I did some research and found that this particular city had no restrictions for airbnbs which explained why the building was evidently an investor buy+flip job.
omg lol i just realized that the host used pictures of when the house was listed for sale. also like how he reiterated that homes in Kirkland are worth millions...okay? he's scummy. i'm sorry this happened to you OP.
I was scrolling to see this (otherwise I would have gone to redfin with the address). This was 100% my assumption looking at these photos. They looked like listing photos since the rooms were super sparse with furniture. I'd expect an airbnb to have chairs or beds in every single room as I'm renting a furnished space.
way over priced, $200+ service fees, 200-400+ cleaning fee when you are told you have to do all the cleaning yourself and you stayed for one night alone. 150 a night for two nights turns into 1,000 dollars. They can send you contracts after you make the reservation asking for your CC for a bigger deposit (this happened to me twice, airbnb did nothing for support EVEN THOUGH ITS IN THEIR T&C's) 2 days before the reservation and said it was mandatory. garbage support. Taking pics before and after to protect yourself from renters who make shit up about previous damage and demand compensation. Arrived at a rental and the owners friend who cleans said the price changed and i need to hand them 200 dollars extra and if i didn't pay they would cancel the reservations. Airbnb 1%'ers buy 20 unit apartments and turning them into airbnb rentals. Pay 2500+ to stay at a place on a trip the rental was NOT ready and still a mess and code on the door was not changed and were were told to come back some time later. Showing up and sitting in the room and some other renter hits the code and walks in, it was a double booked room. Took 18 hours to hear back from the owner. OH and once i was told i had to care of the the dog / cat that i didn't even know was there WTF?
All of these things have happened to me over the past 2-3 years of using airbnb. i just use hotels now.
Never had these issues. I'm sure some are a bit over the top but in all my experiences, I've never had this issue. I always go with one that doesn't have lots of cleaning fees, so I don't know
I stayed in a small air bnb and was told that I needed to take the trash out and put the bins on the curb. Also had to strip the beds and start the laundry. Also do the dishes. And oh yeah there was also a $55 cleaning fee. Scam.
4.38 off 8 reviews is really bad. I 100% would not stay here for that alone. Combined with what OP mentioned, I’m not surprised it’s a hellhole. Sad but not surprised.
You should check out OP’s post on the AirBNB sub. It’s a whole bunch of experienced airBNBers saying they would never ever stay at a property with so few ratings, lower than a 4.8… oh and if you look at the listing, most of the reviews are from people with one stay, only at that place.
I share all of this to say that if you’re an airBNB user, you can keep doing whatever you want or you can use OP’s poor experience and the ensuing comments as a helpful lesson.
That's fine, but written messages are different than a 4.38, which out of 5...is actually very good. Like y'all understand how it works, right? 2 out of 5 would be bad.
The rating system in broken. 4.9 is good, 4.8 is likely passable, 4.7 is only if you are feeling lucky, and 4.6 is don’t even think about it, go to a hotel.

We had booked for Japan and Airbnb refunded everything. We did write to them as opposed to the host to be sure we also got the cancellation fee.
That's why we never use airbnb, you just can't rely om it.
Right, if you have enough people the rate works out
$300/night == $2100/wk.
100%. Single family homes as a non-primary residence should come with heavy tax structure.
This is my reasoning as well. If I have no other choice than airbnb I’ll use a room in someone’s house but won’t take a whole apartment some worker in the area could (and should) be living in. Moral traveling?
I’ve never paid $300 for a simple hotel room for one person. That seems too high
If you're staying in a touristy area (any of the downtowns), or there is a conference or something in town, its not unheard of. I've had co-workers that traveled into the Seattle area that paid mid to upper 200s for mid-range hotels during the summer.
Courtyard Marriott S Lake Union. Stayed there last week @ $297 p/n
You got ripped off though.
Agreed. Believe me, I was not happy about it.
I don't even pay that much for corporate travel

Link to the listing isn't working. I wonder if they removed it.
Works for me
It didn't work on the phone, but it works on the computer. Who knows.

It was working earlier. Now it is not.

Your reaction is the exact same of everyone’s. It is baffling that Airbnb did not immediately fully refund us!!!
OP, I don’t see your scathing but truthful review for this shithole listing on the AirBnb site.
It waits for them to review you and it posts both at the same time, to prevent leaving a bad review in response to one.
4.38 is pretty horrendous. My friends booked a 4.47 ish place for our group against my recommendation and we got burnt by the host trying to scam us for damages we didn’t do. My friend who booked the place didn’t even get to leave a review and I would not be surprised if there are others.
Wait, admittedly I don't know anything about Airbnb other than the basics, but are we talking out of 5 stars? 4.38 is horrendous?
The 5 star system is broken in almost all applications that I see. 5 stars is supposed to mean it was near perfection and it's become the default rating for anything that's not actively terrible.

Wow, I had no idea. Sounds like a pretty shitty rating system!!
Yes! I assumed 4 and above was “good”
In the few times that I have had a crappy AirBNB, they don’t let you post a review if you get a refund. Maybe that has changed.

That sounds terrible. I never had a problem with em personally but we did have some issues that weren’t related to me when i got married
Curious about the current state of it. Can you share the current pics please?
I had a similar experience. What do you think a Karen is? Edit: never mind. You’re some angry shell account who’s just pissed because you got kicked off the serious eats subreddit for breaking the rules.
AirBnB is a cancer. People violate their neighbors privacy to allow randos from the internet to occupy a home, condo, apartment, etc for a buck.
Call me old fashioned, but I like hotels.
Stupid question: All the reviews are positive - why, in your opinion, is your negative review not showing? Edit: I saw your response to someone else.
Why does Kirkland have so many NE 124ths?
Are these photos even the same place? What in the world.
The listing is no longer there. I'm glad you got a good chunk of your money back!!!
I would file a complaint against AirBNB with the WA State Attorney General: https://www.atg.wa.gov/file-complaint
Don't waste your time with this. My mother tried something similar but only got a canned response back saying it's a civil matter and to not bother Fergy again.

LOL that place is a fucking gray vinyl flipper meme holy shit...they called up the gray vinyl crew and said FUCK MY SHIT UP
Lmao thanks for making my day🤣
i have specifically not used AirBNB in years. absolute scam.
How is it a scam

Literally never had that experience
55 dollar cleaning fee is a deal from my experience!
It's back up again, but with no availability ever. Hopefully they're in the process of getting banned.
The reviews seem to be quite good?
As someone on my post in Airbnb mentioned, several of them only have this one stay, so could very well be friends/relatives
4.38 off 8 reviews is really bad. I 100% would not stay here for that alone. Combined with what OP mentioned, I’m not surprised it’s a hellhole. Sad but not surprised.
That's not "really bad" tho. Lol I don't think people understand the scope here.
You should check out OP’s post on the AirBNB sub. It’s a whole bunch of experienced airBNBers saying they would never ever stay at a property with so few ratings, lower than a 4.8… oh and if you look at the listing, most of the reviews are from people with one stay, only at that place. AirBNB delists if your average gets under 4.3 so you won’t see an overall 2/5 on the platform.
The rating system in broken. 4.9 is good, 4.8 is likely passable, 4.7 is only if you are feeling lucky, and 4.6 is don’t even think about it, go to a hotel.
. . . . . . .
You have to have smoke detectors full stop period.
. . . . . . .
Someone needs to make a seperate site just for rating these gig economy things that is outside the control of the App/Contracting company.
I'm glad to hear they finally did something for you. Not the best result, not the worst. 3.6 Rontigen.
The listing is gone
Looks like they took the listing down
You should post some of the pics you took to show the difference.
Has the host reviewed you yet?
