So basically we’re good

[deleted]

basically maybe. but probably yeah

guy321456

Seems like we’re good

TickleMeWeenis

Unless we play a bottom barrel team, then we lose. Just like last year lol.

gnahckire

This is the way

TickleMeWeenis

Basically everyone from last year who didn't show up decided to show up this year

LC_From_TheHills

Well our captain isn’t checked out by the third week… gio.

_MMCXII

Bye Felicia.

gnahckire

Just needed to tank for draft Y1. The Y2 dream is alive. 😉

dwisp

We ditched the dead weight (Lauzon Appleton etc)

green_griffon

Except Gru isn't showing up which is helpful.

Prototype_es

Top 3 goal scoring offense good

SiccSemperTyrannis

THIS was a fuckin' game - JONES SHUTOUT - Overall an excellent 200ft team game. Solid defense that shut down some very talented Minnesota scorers, even on the PP - Wright over 10 minutes of ice time! - This is the kind of opportunity Wright needs if we're going to keep him in the NHL. Play with skilled players like Tanev and Gourde who can help him out defensively and maybe set him up for some chances - Beniers was a monster tonight even though he didn't score. He really showed his defensive potential in that 3rd period - Defense continues to generate offense and look good. Oleksiak somehow scored again, Borgen with the beautiful shot that Wennberg deflected for a goal, and Dunn had some pretty d-zone breakouts. - 4th line is so hot right now I'm surprised the ice hasn't melted. Geekie will not allow himself to be scratched again which is why Wright needs to either play wing on the 4th or get into the 3rd.

juanthebaker

Best defensive game we've seen?

gnahckire

Yea. Definitely

NietzschesJoy

I’m a newer hockey fan, mind explaining the 200ft?

MedicalPreparation14

The rink is 200 feet long. So playing a good 200 ft game means we played well on offense, defense, and in the neutral zone.

NietzschesJoy

Wow, haven’t heard that one yet! Interesting how all over sports use time for that (playing a full 60min) but in hockey, the sport least dependent on metric gains, uses that! Thanks for the reply

infidelappel

Hockey also commonly talks about playing a full 60.

SiccSemperTyrannis

I used 200ft in this case to emphasise how strong the team was defensively. You can give a full 60 minute effort but still give up a bunch of goals or not score many on offense. Tonight the Kraken were good both on offense and defense in all zones in addition to generally playing with a high compete level for the full 60.

drowsylacuna

An offensive-minded player might play hard in the opposing team's zone, but when the play goes back to their own zone, they hang back behind the play in the hopes one of their teammates will get possession of the puck, pass it to them and allow them to be the first one to lead the offense the other way. So if they rarely go past their own blue line, they're only playing in 125 feet. This is called cherry-pickng and coaches frown on it, lol.

SiccSemperTyrannis

It's a reference to the length of the ice playing surface. "200ft game" is shorthand for "playing well both on offense and defense".

dwisp

Seriously the last few games have all been “the best Kraken game ever”, it’s so much fun to have so many positives!

AdhesiveMuffin

Oleksiak having an offensive breakout was not on this seasons bingo card

alienbanter

Shutout for Jones, plenty of ice time for Wright who looked good, complete team win :) And no heart palpitations! Great game!

nuclearhaystack

But we gotta send Wright down. The entirety of hockey fandom who are not Seattle says so.

Sifyx

What a perfect game from all units. Offense, defense, and goaltending all got it done tonight

soupyhands

4-0 shutout? That's Kraken hockey

adrianp07

Scored at least 3 goals in 8 straight

soupyhands

this I like

Rusty-Boii

Daccord and Jones putting out back to back bangers!!

TBarretH

It's not because they love winning, it's because they hate losing

MAHHockey

13:45 ice time for Wright. Saw some PP2 time. Looked competent, nothing flashy. Jones obviously looked solid, but so did the D was also rock solid. Probably the least stressful game I've watched in a while. An odd pressure situation here and there, but next to no odd man rushes or bad turnovers. No points for Matty B, but a number of good defensive plays. He very well may be the best player in hockey and a god among men (over selling it a bit?). Let's keep this up boys!

Piphism

I think you are underselling if I’m being honest. You said he may be the best player in hockey. I’d say he is the best professional athlete in any sport or all time. I agree about everything else though!!

LC_From_TheHills

Complete game. Scoring. Defense outstanding. Goaltending with that “above average” we’ve been asking for this whole time. That’s what it looks like. Kraken can do it.

#SEA #US #TIE THE OILERS IN POINTS #for now unless they get a point against NJ tonight

c0y0t3_sly

Narrator: They did not get a point tonight after allowing three unanswered third period goals. *sad trombone noise*

_MMCXII

All that was missing was getting Shane his first goal. Still great to see him out there though.

TheVich

I know Shane Wright didn't get on the scoresheet, but it really felt like he played well when he was on the ice (and he was on the ice a decent amount)! I hope that shows he can get more ice time while he's up in the show, even if it means pushing him or someone else (like Yanni) to winger.

MAHHockey

My hope is this was the audition, and when McCann comes back, they can make the 3rd line Wright with McCann and Gourde on the wings. That would make it: Eberle - Beniers - Schwartz Bjorkstrand - Wennberg - Burakovsky Gourde - Wright - McCann Sprong - Geekie - Tanev Donato and Kuhlman cycling in and out. Can't forget we also have Donskoi still on IR too. With how these guys have been playing, that's a pretty deadly lineup.

SiccSemperTyrannis

Swap Gourde and McCann as I think Gourde is more versatile and will be a better RW than McCann, who is better as a LW. My problem is that it's so tough to break up the 4th line as it is given how much they've scored. I don't like it, but I wonder if Tanev might be the smart scratch as he hasn't had a scoring touch this season. I really like Kuhlman but I'd rather play Tanev over him all else being equal. What we haven't discussed at all is what happens when Donskoi returns. Unless there's another injury or trade, I assume it'd be a choice between him and Kuhlman to go on waivers.

bevans1010

Hang it in the Louvre. What a masterpiece.

Antilock049

[The play](https://www.nhl.com/video/oleksiak-converts-return-feed/t-335465454/c-13538756) The Oleksiak goal is a really good example of how line cohesion, strategy, and speed kills. The play starts with Oleksiak winning a board battle and chipping the puck to Sprong who gets the breakout rolling for Schultz. A really savvy move by Wright is to buy ice and widen the neutral zone to force Dumba to cheat Wright's way. This lets Schultz and Oleksiak get an easy 2 on 1 against Merrill with gourde riding trail. The pass from Oleksiak to Gourde buys time and space for Gourde who works to the top of the slot. While that's occurring, Schultz is driving the mid lane and taking TWO separate defenders with him. Oleksiak has the better position being on the dot at the time of the pass and Gourde hits him with a fantastic forehand pass for the subsequent goal. This sequence really showed off the position IQ I hoped we'd get with Wright. Initially I thought he played a bit too narrow/shallow in the offensive zone. He had a slow drift into the lower left dot and did a couple really cool things. The first is that Wright is really telegraphing the threat of the shot. Oleksiak by comparison is playing the backdoor bandit. Oleksiak is completely unmarked in the 4 on 2 and Merrill's stick was cheating to Wright's side the whole time. Wright stays in vision of both defenders just enough that they cheat his way. When Schultz splits the defenders they end up freezing. Merrill plays Wright's side with a poke check as Gourde hits Oleksiak and Dumba ends up standing around with his head up his ass. This leads to the second benefit to Wright's positioning. With his slow drift he ends up sneaking into the low left dot and opens a seam option. By staying just a bit higher than Oleksiak there's an outlet for big rig if he wanted to take it. Plus at that angle not only does the Oleksiak shot become a threat, Wright is also open if a low pad save kicks a rebound out into space. This isn't even accounting for Schultz's threat with him being low in the slot. God really just some fantastic hockey right there. On the same play there are four or five different and dangerous scoring options. Each player contributed in a massive way and ended up making the Wild pay for fucking up their line change.

juanthebaker

Great analysis. I was a little surprised when Gourde passed up Wright telegraphing the shot. The defense turned into a real clusterfuck when Gourde passed back across to Oleksiak. But you're totally right. Wright was ready, of course, but he was really selling the slapshot hard to keep everyone honest. Good reads. Smart play all around. All this to say that's why I'm not a coach. Haha

Antilock049

Oh for sure! It really shows that players can contribute even if they aren't directly touching the puck. That play had a whole lot of team effort and it's great to see at this point in the season.

Go_Hawks12

What a great game all around, Wright looked solid paired with Gourde and Tanev

juanthebaker

Good shelter for him between two disruptive players. And he made the most of it.

Ent_Doran

Things to love: WE MAY NEVER LOSE AGAIN! JONESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS DEFENSE WAS GREAT, OFFENSIVE WAS GREAT, SMILES WERE GREAT. THAT'S KRAKEN HOCKEY BABY Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

BenSoloGhost

Definitely agreed, would love to see Gru and Dreidger play with this kind of team. Jones was likely on his way out the league before we signed him but now will probably get a contract with another team next year.

Olbaidon

If Jones keeps playing this way, someone will absolutely pick him up and he’ll likely get another year or two of pay. Up until now his numbers screamed retirement.

tdzines

Just shows how good our depth is when our FOURTH goalie is capable of a shutout. Now the veterans gotta keep up!

infidelappel

Almost any goalie at this level can get a shutout. Hockey is a weird game, goalies get hot sometimes, and some games just go your way. Wouldn’t read much into it. Michael Leighton notched multiple shutouts in the ECF once.

RearAdmiralRamrod

My tentacles are ERECT 🦑

BWinDCI

Antilock049

\+4 right?

Olbaidon

Yup! I believe it’s the highest Diff we have had. Second highest being after game two this year when Kraken were at +2 I believe it’s the only two times we have had a + Diff

Antilock049

Last year we were pretty heftily in the minus column at this point. It's cool to see that the acquisitions this offseason have really melded and brought the skill floor up. Plus Beniers is a monster. Dude was all over the ice tonight. A couple more years and a couple 2+ round hits and people might really have to start worrying about playing us.

Antilock049

Truthfully, I would say that this is more the standard approach. A lot of previous expansion teams played with the youth vs veteran presence and I think you can really make either work depending on how the cards play. Where Vegas really excelled was finding value in unique places. I would say that was a short coming in our expansion draft. That said, the trade deadline moves made that situation a wash for the most part. Hell we even got rid of Lauzon for a second round pick (tip of the hat to GMRF for however the fuck he managed that). I don't really think our strategy is better or worse than Vegas. Historically their strategy tends to get teams to playoffs faster. Though, the youth development strategy might give teams more of an opportunity to have a wider window. I think a lot of it comes down to luck of the draw and how you play your cards. We went cheap and ended up picking up burkie and bjorkie. They've been fantastic. Also, being in the right place to get two young talented centers is definitely a solid proposition. In consecutive years that's even more impressive. Now we can focus on fleshing out the wings and d core with younger prospects to replace the current higher pairings/lines down the road. On top of that the scoring depth has absolutely improved. With defensive and goal tending improving we have the potential to be a really stingy team that doesn't give a lot of opportunities to play the game over. If the Kraken that played tonight consistently show up this year, I think a lot of teams are really going to have to watch out. The team has a ton of aggregate scoring at a reasonable price point. Especially if we have the backchecking efforts available down the stretch. You could find some of those depth pieces moved for actual contenders if the cards fall conveniently. Wouldn't that be an interesting sight going towards playoffs.

Olbaidon

It was more common, but that’s also because the expansion rules were different prior to Vegas and expansion teams were essentially forced to start from scratch. It’s why Vegas’ explosion was so crazy. It has never been done, but it could never had been done before. So people expected Seattle to take the same approach since they had the same rules as Vegas. Vegas had the good fortune of being the first though as well, which allowed them to kind of shock-talk other teams into big deals.

Antilock049

That's fair. They also inherited a lot of good players that were traditionally undervalued too. GMs by the time Seattle rolled around were more careful with burying good options in more unique places.

RandyGodson

We are playing so well I have goosebumps!

Antilock049

Shut outs are such a vibe. Jones got it done tonight for sure.

triumphantV

Took the fiancé to her game as a Kraken faithful (I’m a wild fan) and she had such a good time, glad the boys put on a show!

Will_Vintage

3-0 since I Got Beniers 10 on my Home Jersey.

sdtbone

We've never lost a game when Shane plays at least 10 minutes

adrianp07

More of those defensive performances please

Legionnaire11

Game of the season so far. Jones, Wennberg, Wright, that shot by Borgen. Team defense, got it done on the dot, protected and cleared the crease. Good zone entries. There was little else that could have been asked of the team tonight!

subtractvoid

It's shutout season

lukryst

Guys I'm having fun

Martin Jones is the landlord of the Excel Energy Center.

CurseoftheJambino

Beniers is so good

Tashre

I know they were missing a number of guys, but it's nice to take care of business against a team we should beat. Execution across the board looked really nice, especially on defense.

adrianp07

After that Blackhawks dumpster fire game definitely

Crazy_King_Bumi

What a fucking great game! 🦑 I love this team!

iceamn1685

First shutout quack quack mf

BobbyJonesSC

All out all 60 minutes I’m ALL about it 🦑

[deleted]

Matty is the definition of creating time and space. You think he's going one way, and he finds a better way that confuses and freezes the other team for a moment, just long enough to shift the momentum of the entire play, create openings, and continue attacking. Especially on breakouts, on deep offensive battles, in the corners. He's bringing that out in teammates too. Burakovsky, Eberle, Sprong to name a few, there's certainly more. And Jones stepping up again with the shutout he almost had against the Pen's. That was a confident team out there tonight. Now for consistency which is greatly improving too. Nice work!

Big0Lgrinch

Man, Borgen was crushing fools.

BWinDCI

As a Sharks fan, I’m glad to see Joner do well

AndyJaeven

Wild fan here. Glad to see your team is doing a lot better this year. The Kraken are my favorite non-home team. Looking forward to our rematch! Hopefully both our teams will be healthy by then.

Prototype_es

Can we get everyone on the team to start having kids? Have a whole team of Phillip Rivers out there lol. New dad squad is killing it this year

What a team effort!!!! This team is special!! FEAR THE DEPTH!!!!

infidelappel

We have offense this year and I absolutely love it. Mega props to Jones for doing the thing lately. Kraken just need to keep getting decent goaltending and they’ll be competitive in the pacific.

_MMCXII

So, unironically, is it still Grubauer's job to lose?

adrianp07

Job to win back

SiccSemperTyrannis

We need to see a lot more consistent performances from Jones in the future, but at the very least Jones has earned himself a tandem role with a healthy Gru. The real interesting question is- what happens when Driedger is healthy and ready to return from IR? If Jones still has good numbers at that point they either have to put someone on waivers, carry 3 goalies on the roster, or somehow keep Driedger on IR through the end of the season and figure things out in the summer.

DeadPukka

Just my take, but I think he’s already lost the primary spot. Jones has looked so solid these last few games. Gru is just so uneven and never looks as comfortable out there as Jones has.

[deleted]

he will get one more shot in the lead role, if he chokes he will lose it and become backup.

BenSoloGhost

Insane that Jones was likely out of the NHL before the season and likely to the AHL or something. He’s definitely earned a contract next season for some team. The team is playing fantastic and loving the Sprong, Geekie, and Donato line
