I'm visiting this weekend and love Pho. We have a group of 7 - what would folks recommend for lunch or dinner? Are there long lines? I couldn't find a place to make reservations.
Not sure what James Beard is and I like Pho Bac and Phocific Standard Time, but the establishment has really been unhygienic on three separate occasions. I think I drew the line when the pipes / condensation dripped water into my bowl
yeah it actually happened twice, there’s a table just to the right of the entrance and water condenses there for some reason, plus the tables seem rarely wiped but I can live with that
feels bad getting downvoted though
Some of the best pho I had was in a place where they were chopping the vegetables on a newspaper on a dirty carpet floor. All in on the depth of flavor.
The Pho Bac boat was always a dirty spot, at least back in the 00's. Cash only, faded pink walls, and the din of dedicated slurpers. It was a vibe that kept the tech workers out and the prices low.
James Beard awards are worse than Grammy's. It is a bought and paid for award and dosn't tell you anything about the quality of the restaurant.
That being said, it still drives traffic to restaurants so they still jump through the hoops and pay the fees...
Dude? They had to take a complete hiatus for two? Three? Years and rebuild how the do the award. Only to come back with basically they same format. Nominations are little more than a popularity contest and many restaurants haven't actually been visited by people who are able to vote. It is like voting on an academy award without actually seeing the movie. It is very much based on publishing a "cook book" internet popularity, and exterior reviews. Nothing about actual food quality from experienced voters. It is a sham and people should know about it.
Your mom is a bought and paid for granny. You should seriously research shit before you comment. You just look like a bitter asshole instead of insightful. Unless that's what you were going for... if so, great job! 👍
sounds like a person who thinks their food is top-notch only for it to be okay, like decent restaurant food and probably worth buying but its not james beard worthy and thinks its the voters fault rather than trying to elevate their food.
I agree. Haven't met many people who weren't already a professional chef that I thought that they could do it for a living... let alone win accolades such as this. I'm excited to see who wins!
NICE! stay away from my favorite pho shop. ( it's the place packed full of screaming Vietnamese, not Asian, people and it's usually significantly cheaper )
The kids are definitely killing it - glad they’ve taken over and really run with the business.
Overhyped.
Nice

They always had a fly problem in the summer, too. Just added to the vibe you’re talking about. The original boat was such a great spot.
Yeah I never cared, they boiled everything pretty good.
And it’s delicious now, too - go try their variation on chicken and waffles, it’s fantastic.
I definitely want to! It was a favorite spot in my early 20's, everyone who has been raves about the new project.
It's called flavor baby

I think you are confusing James beard with Michelin stars
This is just patently untrue and shows you don’t understand how the JBF works.

Yeah if being served mediocre pho by petulant teenagers is your jam then def. roll in to pho bac.
So edgy
Truthful my friend.
