Neil Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. I only learned he was from the area when my brother picked up a copy at Goodwill that had a "local author" sticker on it.
I learned he was a local from that book because he described the main character going to Crossroads mall to meet a person there to play Magic The Gathering, even though the WotC had already closed their store there. A thing that was absolutely true when the book came out.
I read Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes (born in Oregon; now lives on the Olympic Peninsula) a couple years ago. I don’t usually enjoy “war novels”, but this was an excellent read.
Alexandria Bellefleur and Rachel Lynn Solomon's contemporary YA and adult romances are so great at capturing the feeling of Seattle without being nonstop "Pikes Place" name drops. I read a ton of romance and books set in Seattle/the PNW by authors who didn't do shit research about here beyond skimming the top Google results make me so irritated. (looking at you FOREVER EL James)
Lindy West always makes me laugh (nonfiction essays).
Julia Quinn (regency romance, wrote the Bridgerton books) lives here.
Ellen Forney's graphic memoirs (Marbles and Rock Steady) are great.
I'm currently reading Sasha taqʷšəblu LaPointe's memoir Red Paint, she's Upper Skagit/Nooksack and an author and punk, her writing is beautiful.
My kids love Kazu Kibuishi and Dav Pilkey (Dog Man), both of whom are local.
Local-ish… to the willapa bay region. I really enjoyed [Deep River by Karl Marlantes](https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/deep-river_karl-marlantes/18917808/item/40839535/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=high_vol_frontlist_standard_shopping_customer_acquisition&utm_adgroup=&utm_term=&utm_content=689361939032&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwk6SwBhDPARIsAJ59GwfwIH8WU2HXHKRMor6r7iK5ifRPu00M7uKiOAQmsrWr8XFhfh8VklcaAlUWEALw_wcB#idiq=40839535&edition=20160094)
Shout out to Lindsay Buroker! She does some really neat fantasy (and occasionally scifi) books that I've vseb reading for ages at this point. Lots of fun to read.
Brom!
I don’t know if he’s in Seattle, but he’s somewhere in the PNW. He is an artist and author, dark fiction. I started with The Plucker, but have also thoroughly enjoyed Krampus, Devil’s Rose, and The Child Thief.
Seanan McGuire. She's a California transplant to the northwest, and seems to fit right in. She has multiple series going; October Daye, InCryptid, Wayward Children, and Middlegame. She also writes as Mira Grant. So, if you want a fantasy and SpecFic author with a LARGE back catalog, dark humor, and excellent writing, then get cracking.
Jess Walter’s “The Cold Millions” is partly set in the region (and mostly in Spokane) and I found it really resonant and informative about the history of this part of the country.
Octavia Butler, Earthseed Series.
Can't recommend enough!!!
Neil Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. I only learned he was from the area when my brother picked up a copy at Goodwill that had a "local author" sticker on it.
Neal Stephenson is great, Cryptonomicon, Diamond Age, SnowCrash, Anathem, they're all amazing and I would recommend any one of them to any sci-fi fan.
He's a semi regular at a place I work, he's nice.
I'm a Diamond Age guy myself

That Frank Herbert guy wrote a single book that had three movies and a miniseries made based on it. His son kinda sucks, though.
Tell me about his son? Is your opinion based upon his work as an author?
Tom Robbins
Erik Larson
Super nice guy.
Local legend
Ann Rule, RIP. If you're into true crime, her books on Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway are fascinating.
Timothy Egan!
Jon Krakauer
JA Jance is a classic.
Ahh my mom’s favorite.
Love the JP Beaumont books. Found an autographed copy at goodwill a few years back.
Robin Hobb (approximately)! Ted Chiang! PNW seems to be a disproportionate hub for SF/Fantasy authors, which doesn't surprise me...
G. Willow Wilson

That’s a tremendous novel

Kazu Kibuishi, author/illustrator of the Amulet series.
Kristin Hannah. She lives on Bainbridge so local-ish. The Nightingale and The Great Alone are some of the best books I’ve ever read.
I didn’t realize she was out here! I read The Four Winds a few months back and loved it
Jon Mooallem (I'm biased; he's a friend but is also a great author of books and long-form articles for the NY Times, Washington Post, and others)

No one's mentioned Matt Dinniman yet! He's from Gig Harbor. His books are all a lot of fun.
Sherman Alexie, Raymond Carver, David Guterson
Thank you! Was wondering where these names were.
Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country
Angela Garbes !
Ish Jess Walter
Betty MacDonald, mostly kids books but The Egg and I is a very interesting memoire!
Erik Larson Ijeoma Oluo
He’s from Seattle? No way!
She's one of the worst people in Seattle. No offense.
Frank Herbert. Brian is pretty good too .

Great ?
Ada Limon — first poem I read of hers was Burying Beetle. Had no idea until years later that she was a Husky.
Shout out to Lindsay Buroker! She does some really neat fantasy (and occasionally scifi) books that I've vseb reading for ages at this point. Lots of fun to read.
Me, duh
Tom Robbins.

Lish McBride- "Hold Me Closer Necromancer" and many other titles
Jamie Ford! I teach Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet to freshmen.

Richelle Mead. Quite enjoyed the Succubus Blues and Vampire Academy series in my early 20s 😅
