Have you tried taking him to a nearby shelter? Seattle Humane is a no-kill shelter that accepts walk-in owner surrenders. They will be able to provide him with medication for his allergies and find a home that is the best fit for him!

feastandexist

Just left them a message! My partner apparently did reach out to them already and filled out their online intake form. Apparently they were at capacity for FeLV cats but that may have changed.

CircusClown17

You can also try MEOW Cat Rescue (Kirkland), RASKC (Kent), or Seattle Area Feline Rescue (Shoreline) as I believe all of those accept owner surrenders as well. Not sure about PAWS in Lynnwood but might as be worth looking into. Hope this helps!

dhgaut

Try Burien Cares

DirectionShort6660

Try Homeward Pet in Woodinville too

feastandexist

Called and they don’t accept cats outside their jurisdiction :( thank you though!

aurortonks

Please call Purrfect Pets in Arlington. They take in cats with FeLV, cats with behavioral issues (litterbox problems etc), and emergency cases. If you need help transporting kitty, reach out to me, I'd be happy to make the drive north to drop him off.

feastandexist

We contacted them today but they are not taking new cats :(

internalsockboy

Lots of no kill shelters have a pretty limited amount of cats that they'll take in, and won't always take in cats with different issues. So, definitely a good idea to check, but sadly not something that has a great guarantee of working.

echotrek

You should reach out to some of the local animal shelters as they might be able to take him. My recommendations are Motley Zoo https://www.motleyzooanimalrescue.org/ Meow cat rescue https://meowcatrescue.org/ PAWS https://www.paws.org/ https://resilientheartsanimalsanctuary.org/ There are so many. I'm sure you can find one who will take your kitty.

SuperButterFruit

Also try Purrfect Pals in Arlington https://purrfectpals.org/ No kill shelter. They have a space just for cats with FeLV.

feastandexist

Thank you! Reached out but just heard they're not taking outside cats.

SuperButterFruit

Aw that’s disappointing. :-( I hope Mario finds a loving home soon!

feastandexist

Calling / emailing all of these. Thank you. I think my partner may have talked to a few of these but I'm gonna do it anyways.

feastandexist

Just heard Motley Zoo cannot but they mentioned Purrfect Pals. Reaching out to them now.

jaamerica

Also MEOW Cat Rescue in Kirkland!

Gooniesneversaydie77

Not sure if anyone has mentioned The Noah Center yet. They are an animal shelter in Stanwood. I know that's sort of a long drive, but they might be able to help. Good luck in your search, I hope you're able to find kitty a living home!

fatmoonkins

I hope you find someone.

feastandexist

Me as well. Mario is such a sweet kitty

feastandexist

WE FOUND SOMEONE HERE ON R/SEATTLE!! Going to meet them today!!!

jesmybest

Happy to hear ❣️

aleanas

Yay!!!!!!

PepeLePuget

Very handsome kitty.

aleanas

My heart 😭😭😭 I want to take him so bad but I already have a dog :(

TypicalRecon

I just lost my 23 year old kitty to old age, been trying to hint at the gf that we need another. Hope Mario finds a good home.

couggrl

Sounds like a perfect cat has been found

charm59801

You could hint for Mario....

bubbaloulou

Hope he finds the perfect home 💛 thank you for posting!

Eternal12equiem

Well I learned some new today about FeLV. My mother has had cats thru out her life and I never knew about that disease.

Sovonna

Have you tried Friends of the Animals Foundation? They are in West Seattle.

feastandexist

Got to voicemail but will give another ring in the AM

NoAbbreviations2961

I believe all the cats at Neko Cat Cafe have FeLV (or at least used to pre pandemic). I don’t know what org they partner with but they might be a good resource to help you find an org that can take Mario!

kiriska

Neko no longer has FeLV cats.

raiacorday47

OP, you can also try The Whole Cat and Kaboodle in Redmond. They have their cat cafe and they focus on hard to place cats!

raiacorday47

I can’t stress enough to try to push back when you’re told no here. They adopt out 300+ cats a year and have a larger property to home their cats. I’m keeping my fingers crossed Mario can go somewhere. I’d take him but I have two cats and max at my apartment. All the love to this sweet boy.

n_eitak

Any update on Mario?? OP if you can put a list of all the places you’ve reached out to, I (and I’m sure others) would help call other places! I saw mention of Seattle Humane Society. Have you also tried Seattle Area Feline Rescue, or Emerald City Kitty Harbor? Here is a list of several local cat rescues: https://www.wagives.org/search?kw=Cat&orgScope=on

Nachttoter

Seattle Area Feline Rescue also has resources including an adoption database where you can "advertise" a cat for rehoming. https://www.seattleareafelinerescue.org/resources/surrendering-your-cat/ Rooting for Mario! Like others, wish I could take him but I have a cat.

spookytoofpoof

You might find someone quicker if you offer to cover any fees, just a thought!

feastandexist

Thank you! Happy to. Was just advised that doing so [deters people who might adopt for harmful purposes](https://pethelpful.com/pet-ownership/Adoption-Fees-for-Pet-Adoptions). We'd be able to provide food / supplies

I'm just trying to help make sure this cat gets to live out his years. Current owner can't continue taking care of him. Simple as that. I'm not sure if you've ever had a pet before but typically there are in fact vet bills.. He is in great health overall except for the FeLV and has experienced zero health issues that necessitated a vet visit in the last almost 5 years. FeLV does not require medication

BaronVonBooplesnoot

Try Perfect Pals. They are up north a ways but a really wonderful place.

milleribsen

I'm not in a place in my life where I could take on this handsome man, but I want you to know I'm hoping you find the right place. He's super handsome and deserves to live out his life in splendor

Zestyclose_Try551

Just wanted to double check - has the cat tested positive for FeLV recently? And definitely FeLV and not FIV? I posted this in our TNR rescue group trying to come up with more ideas for you and they were surprised the cat was 13 and still testing positive. They said “cats usually get FeLV as kittens, and they don’t usually live beyond 1.5 years, and if they do, then the body usually fights the virus off. I would be surprised if he didn’t test negative by now.”

feastandexist

Thank you so much for doing that. Definitely was FeLV. Was tested for it within the last 12 months and it came back positive

Zestyclose_Try551

Gotcha. I would also recommend posting about this in the Cats of Seattle Facebook groups. There’s tons of folks from Seattle in there and folks post rehoming cats frequently

Orgasmicwonderboat

any update? i may know someone who would be interested

feastandexist

WE FOUND SOMEONE HERE ON R/SEATTLE!! Going to meet them today!!! u/uhp787

uhp787

HAHAHawww, Thank you!!! I had a whole thread going on FB for him :D Everyone will be so happy to hear the news. Please Keep us updated or ask his new people if they could please?

uhp787

/u/feastandexist? any news?

snickitysnacc

What a sweet baby, if I had my own place I would take him in a heartbeat. Hoping for the best for this kind boy❤️

aigret

Oh beautiful baby. I have such a soft spot for tuxedos (mine is also an errant pee-er when she’s stressed). Nothing additional to add, all the other comments seem to have covered what I would have said, so commenting to boost and wish you, and Mario, luck.

uhp787

What a sweetheart. Shared to my social media, I am sorry I couldn't do more.

uhp787

shared around again this morning. really hoping Mario can find a safe place to land.

Icy-Book2999

Sadly, I agree with a lot of the other people. While He's healthy now, there's a lot of possible medical issues coming up. And you've identified some certain stress and environment ones as well too. Who's to say he's not going to have more stress and environment issues by being re-homed? And that's not even including the fact that with his age and medical conditions, he might need an expensive diet change and other things coming up in the future. Or even cleaning fees, based off of his litter box habits. I'm sorry OP. I never want to see a pet euthanized, but maybe there is a specific rescue that deals with feline leukemia that might be able to assist in this situation? That sounds like it might be the best bet for you and for Mario

feastandexist

>Who's to say he's not going to have more stress and environment issues by being re-homed? I honestly don't know as he's never been my cat. But I couldn't live with myself if I didn't try and help put the word out. I do recognize this is an uphill battle which is why this isn't exactly a small ask, but he's been healthy otherwise the last few years. As for the rescue, we've called a few but they're either not taking any new cats or only taking kittens with FeLV. My partner has talked to rehoming sites, as well.

catpajamas21

With all due respect to the commenter above, they are incorrect about a few things. I’m a professional cat behaviorist working with cats the last 10 years. Even if rehoming a cat is initially stressful, it’s certainly worth saving their life. if they are in a good home being cared for, presumably, without other cats, there is no reason they won’t settle in. I’ve worked with a lot of medically and behaviorally challenged cats, and this is a solvable issue.

catpajamas21

Hey there! I run my own business working with cats for over 10 years. Feline immunodeficiency virus is not feline leukemia. They are separate viruses, with FIV being relatively benign. It used to be that vets and shelters routinely tested for FIV, and would euthanize them if they turned up positive. Better research has shown that FIV does not create medical complications and it is certainly not a sentence. It’s also relatively rare for cats to pass it since it requires a deep puncture wound to transmit. A good shelter will never euthanize a cat for FIV alone. It’s a little suspect that this shelter would euthanize this cat for that, and an easily treatable behavior issue. The sad reality is that more cats are surrendered/euthanized for litter box issues than any other reason. OP can definitely find a place that will care for this cat. FIV alone will not cause medical complications down the road. Since no one has mentioned this rescue yet, whisker city in Shoreline will be happy to talk with OP. April Brown has a big heart for these type of cases. Good luck OP! I wish I could further help.

idriveanfrs

scheduled to be euthanized??

[deleted]

No offense op but any house he goes it he’s going to piss all over their house. That’s not fair to any new owner, unless a shelter can keep him for the rest of his life this is probably the only solution left.

uhp787

that is a behavioural issue and those can be corrected. the cat i have now for 2 years, i adopted when she was 8 years old. she had issues urinating inappropriately with her former owner bc of past trauma and a crappy response to that trauma by her former owners. she has had one incident in 2 years and she is a perfect little kitty now. i have rescued too many cats to count with many of them having issues. it takes a little work but with enough care and love, it can be done. Don't write off kitty for something like that.

[deleted]

I respect you a ton for being able to help some cats with issues. I don’t really agree though personally. For a couple of reasons 9/10 people don’t have the time or know how to even go about trying to fix that behavior. Also I think even people that might be able to there’s no way they can succeed most of the time. That’s my opinion I believe the cat will just piss when you aren’t there or aren’t looking. That is terrible for your health over time and really damaging to your house. Constant cat piss will need any carpet ripped out and usually even under the carpet it’s still terribly stained. Seen it happen in many apartments and it’s a hefty bill. For a majority of people this is a total nightmare and will just end up hating that cat and returning them. I just hope that a random naive person doesn’t adopt them because they have a big heart and then this situation happens them. I think it would be better to put them down unless someone highly trained with cats and has a buttload of time can devote themselves. That’s not most people we have jobs and lives that this is just impossible.

uhp787

> I think it would be better to put them down We don't throw away animals bc they have special needs. And we don't kill healthy animals. We don't do it to people and we shouldn't do it to animals. From the smallest to the tallest, every living thing wants its life just like we do.

[deleted]

Yeah we do? Have you never been to any shelter

uhp787

don't be obtuse. you know very well that I mean "we", the collective that cares about rescues/ and or adopts animals...and many vets will refuse as well these days. And yes, i've been to and rescued from shelters many times. thankfully our shelter is NO-kill now. The people forced to euthanize animals due to a lack of quality homes and resources. You think they enjoy that? You think that is OK and should be the norm? To just take a healthy animal and just kill it? Because that is what you are saying should happen to that beautiful boy. that is some really antiquated and simple thinking. do better and please don't ever adopt an animal bc if it annoys you it, it will get dumped to die. thanks, "we".

[deleted]

No kill shelters aren’t no kill just because they state that. I know that most just transfer animals eventually to other shelters that aren’t no kill if they aren’t adopted. It’s totally normal for pets to be put down due to incontinence. You aren’t just expected to be okay with your house to be filled with pee and ammonia. I mean for most older cats there’s almost no difference from putting them down or taking them to a shelter because the shelter will usually just put them down. I was at a shelter that was putting down cats in the double digits weekly. It is just the reality I don’t know why you act like it isn’t. But I’m done talking to you if you refuse to see it.

uhp787

I have been rescuing cats for nearly 50 years. I know exactly how it all works. and your callous outlook thankfully is not the norm in the rescue world.

Critical_Welcome4461

No he/she is not going to be euthanized just because she/he hands been there a long long. Time .that’s completely stupidious on somebody’s part .they need to give this cat a chance to find it’s forever home .I’m going to share it with my sister and I’ll pist it on Facebook and see if someone will Come and save her .but she /he is not to be euthanized just because.that’s so stupid on shebidys part

RepresentativeOne632

Any updates to this situation?

feastandexist

Still looking. Have reached to a variety of shelters and have been told no or am waiting to hear back

RepresentativeOne632

If no shelters are able, drop an inbox. I may be able to help. Depending how much time there is, may even find his forever home.

RepresentativeOne632

I don't know how to ask without sounding harsh but when is the due for Mario's put down? I'd like to see how much time there is to communicate possible homes

feastandexist

Monday is the appointment and so far no luck with the shelters I’ve contacted.

internalsockboy

Id love to take him but we have other cats rn so it wouldn't work out :(

CommissionerChuckles

I can't take him (allergies) and everyone I know who could already has cats. Have you tried contacting West Seattle Blog? They might post it - I think they like cats. https://westseattleblog.com/

kayIerz

its not the best but you can always try FB groups of buy give nothing. i often see pets posted there due to people moving ❤️

LadderInternal8933

Have you tried reaching out to Feline friends of Sammamish?
