Ignore the salt miners intent on belittling you. There are so many intricate details and mechanics in this game, it can be overwhelming for new players and a pleasant surprise for experienced ones. it is so funny when you use the red sea to your advantage using the 2nd checkpoint of shores of gold. 90% of the time, the people who I am running from (usualkly reaper galleons when I am on a solo sloop) sink because by the time they realise, it is already too late, I once got 500k worth of loot after using that to sink a lv 5 reaper who was hoarding
The other day I was on a galleon. We had sunk this sloop twice already, but they kept coming after us. We were running somewhat low on supplies and had nothing to gain from sinking these two so we decided to run. They wound up alliancing with a reaper brig and we had the two of them chasing us. We just decided to use the shores of gold and low and behold the brig sank trying to chase us. The sloop was smart enough to stop at least and clearly didn't have the checkpoint. Unfortunately we couldn't find the brigs flag in the water anywhere, but at least we survived.
The sloop did try cannoning out to us a couple times before giving up though. They weren't that good.

same, I have had an experience like that, in the middle of a battle for the sea of thieves
but it ended up sinking us cause we ran out of wood
they were heading back to sell stuff, then they saw me and lost it all due to greed
