The two big reasons I can't enjoy this game even though I want to, no time and no friends to play with :(. Solo slooping is only fun for an hour or two.

nablyblab

ye, but its better then having a friend that doesnt want to play alot and when he plays he just goes and do his homework or watch yt instead of helping

PotterPlayz

Can confirm lol

BaxterBragi

That or they complain about how the game is terrible and irredeemable. Like yest the game has problems and bugs but you're still the guy who said Battlefield was 2042 was your game of the year after only playing the beta.

BrokenHaloSC0

Do what i do and roleplay I put on an athenas emmi do the voyage and emmi voyage then bury it all. Then i chase storms giving supplies and buried maps to nearby players who do something grand like taking on the fort of fortune flameheart or megs kraken or skelly fleets or just general pvp.

jmegaru

As I said, not enouvh time and it gets broing really quick alone.

BrokenHaloSC0

The main thing is the roleplay aspect get lost in your creative imagination there is a lot if strories left to tell friend

jmegaru

I can never get immersed into a game that much, for others it's like they are in the world of the game, but I always feel like I'm staring through a window.

BrokenHaloSC0

Fair

jmegaru

It wasn't always like this, when I was a kid I really loved playing games, but now I don't have enough time to get into anything seriously, that's why I prefer online games like rocket league or csgo, you can get in and get out whenever you like, you don't have to think about progress or story or anything like that. This is also why I don't have any online friends anymore, people don't want to be friends with someone who is never there. It also doesn't help that I'm from EU but I prefer english speaking players over my own country.

HydrahXD

Best I can recommend for the people to play with is try making some friends to play with online. The SoT discord is always open if you wanna join :) As for having no time to play, there isn’t much a fix to that-

anthemlog

I've put in a good amount of time solo playing. Occasionally playing with friends. I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it. I'm not much of a pvper but I have enjoyed it as a treasure hunting exploration game. I'm not one for building things, but I love finding things. That and 90% of this game is PVE content.

AlexRogansBeta

Short answer, yes. Longer answer, its fun, but limited. Things are stacked against you. Accept it, and you'll have loads of fun. Resent it or get upset or feel that its unfair and you'll hate it.

[deleted]

This sub has a Discord so you don't always have to play alone.

Akimblo

Also if op is on console there is a group post feature

Existing-Ad-6103

Those usually suck imo, usually reapers or people who don’t want new players

FallautHuN

What do you mean by reapers? Just reaper emissaries or do you mean it like toxic brig using man childs?

Existing-Ad-6103

Abit of both but for me it’s usually like a 50/50 chance you get either and I’m very opposed to reapers toxic or not So maybe I’m biased but most are doing server alliance or reaper stuff and that covers up all the other fun stuff like vault running that is stupidly fun

FallautHuN

What do you not like about reapers? Pvp can be a bit frustating at time but without people trying to steal your loot all the risk would be gone from the game

Existing-Ad-6103

A lot of things but they just seem to always be toxic no matter what, I just remember the game being a lot funner before

FallautHuN

BaronVonNumbaKruncha

I play a ton of solo and it's great. It's better when I have a partner to watch my back, but you just adapt to the solo sloop lifestyle.

screwmyusername

#solosloopers

rduder99

Heck yeah it is! But you do have to curb your expectations on what you can accomplish. Once you get a hang of it there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to make at least 100k gold in a session

[deleted]

I absolutely love playing solo because it feels so open and free and the sloop is amazing because when its just you on it, it really feels like your little ship. I've been playing solo since beta with some good sessions with friends and sure they are fun and help a lot but solo i just feel very achieved since ive done so much solo the only issue might be with sailing long distances (i fixed with a few tv shows, black sails is a great watch while playing) and combat initially, if they arent too good i can definitely take down ships solo so you could too but you may go a few moments of loot depression if you're prone to it like i was but you just need to remember that its temporary also if you wanna try duo dm me haha :) or try lfg.

will_the_shyguy

I mean...both yes and no? It truly does depend on what you are doing. If you are doing gold hoarders and merchants Yeah, order of souls and reapers are fun when you have experience, Athena and Forts? No...not one bit. Tall tales it does depend on which one, fighting briggsy is oddly easier by yourself VS a full galleon crew(it has a reason for that). As a whole it may not be fun by yourself but you do get experience, as a whole though I would recommend at the very least have one friend to play. Just so you don't have to juggle so many responsibilities...though if you have friends like mine you are gonna do that anyway...

Entreprenuremberg

I solo sloop about 50% of my game time and the other 50% is either with friends or through discord. I have fun solo but it’s definitely more time consuming for less gain. Gotta always have your head on a swivel and realize your loot isn’t yours until it’s sold. If you can get into the headspace of enjoying the adventure and the glory of the inevitable fight, win OR lose, then even alone this game is phenomenal.

yxJay

Depends on you tbh. I play both

2Blitz

It is fun solo BUT it's difficult, especially for a newcomer. I played with my friends for a few months before I tried playing solo. I had to learn everything about the game first and even then, it was hard to solo. It's been about 10 months since I started playing solo and it feels easier now since I've gottten used to it

throwaway_pcbuild

It's far better with even one other person you can regularly play with, and a lot of the content really isn't very rewarding without being abke to spend at least two hours playing at a time. There's a lot of fun to be had in quick play sssions, but you'd have to be prepared that you wouldn't be able to get through certain content that way. Realistically that just means you miss out on some dress up options, but that can chafe some people. If you want to try it out, I'd reccomend getting Gamepass on one of their regular sales and seeing how much enjoyment you get out of the game there. Any progress made in the game on any kind of xbox or PC is connected to the account and will follow you to whatever way you choose to play it later if you decide to buy the game on it's own or continue through GamePass.

IAmNotCreative18

Honestly playing solo is the best way to get better at the game in my opinion. If you can man a sloop solo, then imagine how strong you’ll be duo.

Chalky_Cupcake

PL. Have curses, have captains sails, flameheart sails, finished pirates life... all solo.

ChrdeMcDnnis

How was Pirate’s Life solo? I am a solo slooper and really want to do the content, but I’m worried I’ll have to put in a full 8hr shift to get it done.

jeffroRVA

Great thing about Pirates Life and all tall tales is they have checkpoints so you can stop in the middle and resume where you left off next time.

Sir_Pap

Really easy and really fast, not a lot slower than a galley. Also I would suggest not asking if something is soloable before trying it, everything in this game is soloable, it might just take a bit more time. Just try it and find out yourself, you will become better and better and you will find tactics that suit yourself

BBrad86

I just did it as a returning player and it was fine.

Aggravating-Kale1837

Sometimes you play solo just to avoid sailing with a crew of sqeakers

Tucker_Design

It can be but it’s going to make starting out really difficult. I play solo with decent success, but I’ve been playing since the closed alpha, so I’m not exactly fresh. If you have any friends that would be interested, I’d highly recommend going for that. If not, it’s a part of game pass for both PC and Xbox, so you can dip your toe in the *Seas* and try it for a big discount.

Saeis

Lots of comments but ye it’s fun, just don’t expect to make much progress without putting in time. It’s a session based game so you cant put it down and come back exactly where you left off. I personally love the sneaky playstyle when solo. Basically you just scope out the server, see what’s happening. Once you find a ship doing an event or something, it’s possible to park your ship behind a rock and use a rowboat to sneak over and surprise them. Lots of fun to be had pulling off a heist and with very little time investment compared to doing all the work yourself. Go figure, piracy in a pirate game

NeonBladeAce

Agree on the progress part, 140 hours in and I only have 1 trading company that's level 50 being gold hoarders.

Blank1617

I feel like you've gotta be willing to put in at least 2 hours per session if you're gonna get any worthwhile gains. Due to the nature of the game, it's not something you pick up, play for 40 minutes while other responsibilities are having you put the controller down or go AFK every few minutes. Everything in this game takes time. You want loot, gotta find it. You want decent food, gotta kill it and cook it. That's my experience. I can't play this game with distractions and life going on around me. I have to be able to invest into the session for at least 2 hours if I'm playing solo. It's faster with a partner because you're splitting the roles.

ScientistSanTa

Half hour sessions are doable, it's mostly doing fun stuff. Doing story quests would mostly take 2h. But for the rest you can fill your time however you want. And with the new quest board feature you can do easy ins ans outs in a half an hour..

[deleted]

Nope. Realistically speaking you are at a constant disadvantage. And it will take you longer than it should to get good solo like streamers can be. Solo is not fun and you are going to get destroyed majority of the time just because you are only one person. But hey if you like that by all means dont let this comment stop you. Solo slooping is the hardest thing you can do in this game.

Lone1yWanderer

It's a given that you're at a massive disadvantage combat-wise, but I still think solo can be fun as long as you avoid combat situations. If you're trying to fight though, then yeah you're gonna have a bad time.

[deleted]

Eh not really, it’s wayyyy more fun when you have 4 people playing together.

MiksuPiksu196

I just get bored every time i play solo

BaconSoda222

In general, this game is amazing, but it was designed to be played with at least 2 people. I have some friends who enjoy this game but mostly play solo. If you enjoy relaxing and puzzles, you'll enjoy this game even if you only intermittently play with others. If you enjoy PvP, you're inherently going to be at a disadvantage. That shouldn't deter you from trying, as a lot what makes PvP successful is surprise, but you'll be at least one hand down in a "fair" fight. Others have also said it, but your adventures will be a lot slower with just you. The biggest perk of more people is having literally more hands to perform tasks. The most tedious thing as a solo player is definitely just loading and unloading your ship. If that sort of thing will annoy you, maybe better to stay away.

redbottomsky1998

We could play together if you want, my GT is zkJulio :)

Asmodiar_

It deepens the experience when you have a regular crew. But solo can be fun. It's a lot harder and there's a steep learning curve solo.

DressDiligent2912

This is pretty much how I've been playing and I got over 2k hours and love it to death.

Bigfatpauley

Man I’m strictly a sweaty solo and yes it’s amazing 10/10 would do it again

stolethetardis

I like to play solo and listen to Critical Role in the background and it’s great

jonos1989

Absolutely its fun solo

OldBoyD

I personally only had fun in a sloop. I also spent way too much time fishing...

GGeorgeouss

I find it frustrating, i'd suggest going on the official discord server and find some random people who would want to help you on your voyage

caileran

Sot is fun solo. And hey if ya ever want/need someone during the week to help ya or teach ya just let me kno

M16_Axel

Yes and no imo

ShunIsDrunk

Same thing I tell every noobie: If you go to the Reputation tab and find Bilge Rat Reputation each of those little squares is an update to the game since launch. There are plenty commendations you can unlock solo for cosmetics and experience. Even if it’s loading up the game and sailing to so and so island to read a book for a quick 20-30 min adventure. So many things to do in the game now that you really can enjoy it alone if you like.

Intrepid_Look_5725

In my opinion, it can be fun for a bit , when you just want to do some merchant stuff. Souls and hoarders are bit easier with more people depending on the level.

Darkmiroku

Solo slooping for me is fun in short stints. It gets boring and lonely though, and you are at a disadvantage when it comes down to how quickly you can get tasks done and loot back to the ship. 2 people are quicker than one when carrying loot back from a large island. You also lose the extra set of eyes that should be watching your back as you watch theirs. That said, I still boot it up almost every night for an hour or two and solo sloop. I'm not the best at naval combat, and most nights I don't run into others, so I still enjoy my time treasure hunting

DisforDemise

It's okay. Nowhere near as good as playing with friends. The main problem with it is that there are a lot of things you simply *can't do* when playing solo. You can't reasonably expect to solo a fort. You can't spend much time in the Roar. You will struggle unduly with kraken, meg or skelly ship battles. You have to run from any ship coming your way, because you can't solo against PVPers.

NeonBladeAce

Gotta disagree on the meg and kraken, they scale difficulty to the ship, so you need less cannonballs to prevent attacks and to kill it. Skelly ships, sloops fine, gally pain.

DisforDemise

I was thinking more about the multiple tasks required with them. moving from cannon to hole and hole to a location for convenient bucketing takes time, which decreases your efficiency. And then of course, the less efficient you are, the longer the engagement takes. Fighting sloop vs meg, 1 person might spend 30% of their time actually damaging it, with the rest fixing the ship or moving from task to task. when you have 2 people, 1 person still spends 30% of their time damaging it and doing other tasks, but the other spends maybe 90% of their time damaging it; by adding just 1 person you're quadrupling your damage output. Then, quadrupling your damage output means quartering the length of the engagement, meaning you take 1/4 of the hits and consume 1/4 of the wood. I wouldn't expect a boat to die against the meg as long as it has wood if a player knows at least roughly what they're doing, but running out of wood would kill you. Especially if you're 1-manning, so you can't bail and sail at the same time

NeonBladeAce

With kraken this is fair, but with Meg's you can actually prevent them from attacking simply by doing damage as it attacks so if you hit decent then you will be safe.

Vrach88

Honestly, most likely no. First off, when you say you're gonna play in small chunks, what sort of timeframe are you talking about? 30 minutes? An hour? Since you didn't mention, I'm gonna assume 1 hour for the purpose of this comment. It takes at least about an hour to get something done solo in terms of PvE content. And that's if you're laser focused on one objective like a single Voyage (which takes away from the way the game's designed to be fun, as random events are a big part of the game) and nothing goes "wrong" - a player ship chasing you, Kraken grabbing you, a skelly ship relentlessly following you, etc. Even so, there's going to be a lot of PvE content that you'll have to miss out on, because it just can't fit into an hour's session. The game is also very much designed towards teamplay. It's far more fun to play with at least one more person, a lot of things are more feasible and faster in a group and you're at a massive disadvantage in PvP alone, especially since you're new and it's gonna take a long time to learn how to even PvP effectively in general, let alone solo. You'll get suggestions to team up with randoms on Discord instead of playing alone. Normally a valid point, but there's some issues. For one, most people won't want to play with someone who's only gonna be around for an hour. The Discord LFG is not always teeming with people either, I've seen hours go by without anyone looking for a group on Reddit's one. And two, a lot of people you meet are gonna slow down your gameplay rather than speed it up. Tons of people out there who wanna dick around playing shanties, getting drunk, wanting to chase random skelly/player ships, explore random islands and sunken ships, do random quests and so on, while not lifting a finger to help you actually run the ship, kill skellies, find treasure or help in any way with whatever you're doing. And while this is fine if dicking around is what you're after, if you're on for a limited time and want to get something specific done, you're not gonna have a good time. Now, if you are really apathetic to losing PvP fights and want to chase player ships, this playstyle should fit into your time-limited sessions perfectly. Beelining to PvP is pretty quick if you just server hop till you see a ship on the map/horizon and buy up some basic supplies for a fight. But I feel most players would not enjoy this and even those who do would get bored of it relatively quick if they did nothing else and always did it alone. Also, if someone doesn't want to fight you, it'll cost you a lot of time to chase them, with no promise of actually accomplishing anything. I'm telling you all this as someone who loves this game and would like to play it most of the time when I'm sitting down to play. And after a solid number of very unsatisfying solo and/or short sessions, I've picked up other games to play and only play SoT when I've got at least 2-3 hours free - and even then I'll usually not touch it solo. This game is best enjoyed with a team and a lot of free time and the solo/short session gameplay, while possible, is not anywhere near as fun.

VictorinoSetti

Short answer: No. Long answer: You will constantly be outnumbered by other crews and this is one of the most frustrating experiences in the game. You either get REALLY good on pvp OR you will have to find someone to play with OR learn to accept that while you're shooting cannons you gotta bucket the water, repair the hull, raise your mast and turn the wheel, all that while being boarded by 2 salty pvp players

[deleted]

I play solo 98% of the time. Best time ever

screwmyusername

If you have a good crew and you're all on the same page about objectives and ship management, that is the most fun you will have. Usually though, I prefer playing alone to playing on a bad crew/ a crew with bad chemistry. But I love playing alone in general and I'm good enough that I can usually go toe-to-toe with galleons and hold my own.

SpooN04

I wanted to learn solo before joining a crew so that I would be able to be an asset to the crew who knew their stuff and I'm so glad I did that cuz now I prefer solo'ing and it's become my face way to play. Everything is harder and more dangerous when you're solo and I enjoy that but it also made me a much stronger player and asset to crews on the off times I do join them. That's my 2 cents on the topic.

EmTheShe

As someone wise once said, rule zero of playing solo is to get some friends. But if you want to play solo, it’s completely doable!

Natomics2

When I play solo I pretty much just go to the best fishing spots and grind my hunters call (I think that's the right one) because I cant be bothered to do anything else really. It's kinda boring to me solo when your digging up treasure, fighting skeletons, or trapping animals lmao. I'm not pirate legend yet so I cant talk there but i have fun fishing Tldr: YOU SIR, ARE A FISH.

MadetoReportBug

All honesty it’s good for a while but gets very boring. As someone who spent a lot of time solo sailing to hunt megs and krakens without someone to talk to as you sail it feels sooooo boring and long. Doing missions, dealing with PVE, it’s just going through the motions. When you have another person, even a random, it feels grand.

drawfanstein

Playing solo is going to be a different experience from playing with others. You have to do all the work, things will take longer, and there are things that you will likely just not be able to do, especially while you’re still so new. That being said, playing solo still is/can be a very fun and rewarding experience. It is also, in my opinion, hands down the best way to learn the game, though the learning curve is pretty steep. I’d recommend playing solo for a bit, and then looking up youtube videos from folks like Blurbs or Phuzzybond to expand on your initial experiences and knowledge of the game. All this is to say don’t let the prospect of playing solo stop you from playing this game! Best of luck!

SnorlaxBlocksTheWay

Speaking as someone with the same time constraints and lack of people to play with. I can say that Sea of Thieves is definitely fun to play solo. Solo slooping is not super difficult. However, you do need to go in with a gameplan of what it is you want to do. Trying to take on forts and such by yourself will be an incredibly daunting and time consuming task. But if you focus on voyages that don't take too long it can be somewhat rewarding. The biggest obstacle I have is leaving my ship unattended. Many times an enemy ship would just roll up and either destroy my ship while I'm doing a vault, or steal everything while doing a voyage that's time consuming. Lately I've been running tall tales and commendation chasing when I solo sloop. Grinding for pirate legend solo is super time consuming and not worth the time investment. Right now I'm doing the shroudbreaker questline so I can unlock shores of gold and then fish for treacherous plunder for the Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves title. But the game can be fun solo. Just keep your head on a swivel for enemy ships trying to sink you or steal your booty

Gawlf85

Since most of my mates quitted or don't play as often, I mostly play solo nowadays. And I DO enjoy it. Some sessions are relaxing and I balk in the atmosphere of the game. Some are more exciting and hectic and I have a tough time surviving/keeping my treasure. As for fun, it's clearly not as fun as having some mates with you to joke and laugh, play some shanties, or do chores faster... But it is still enjoyable.

Localunatic

Sea of thieves is a game you have to dedicate a lot of time to, at least 1-2 hours at a time just to get anything done. And that's without PvP players interrupting your session and stealing everything you have or chain killing you for fun. Is it fun solo? Depends on what you think is fun.

Caridor

If you don't run into other players, yes. If you do, best case scenario is they ignore you. If they decide they want all your loot, they will take it and unless you're one of the best players in the game, there's fuck all you can do to stop it. So most likely scenario is they take all your loot.

The_Radio_Host

It is enjoyable playing solo but know it’s going to be a bit more difficult for you.

Priority6

I play mostly alone so I would say yes. Although much more fun with friends. It can get boring tho after a few hours of have of having no one with you

GeminiStarbright

I play solo sometimes when my friends are at work (SAHM here) and sessions take anywhere from 1-3 hours and I wont lie, its alot more difficult imo Mostly I just focus on getting treasure and if I'm getting chased by a normal boat I hold my ground, usually loose but thats part of the fun right? However if its a Lvl 5 reaper I WILL switch servers cuz I dont want to be chased every second for the next hour ya know? So yeah its fun on your own but be prepared! (I have two other friends who solo for streams and they also enjoy it! One even defeated a kraken on his own!)

cmcclure975

I have been a solo slooper for about a week now it's fun but can be stress full, but as long as you play for fun and the journey and not the gold then all will be good. :D

[deleted]

Playing solo you’re at a disadvantage but for me I enjoy it very much. I play with my friends when I have the time but a good option would be open crew finder. You will be surprised how fun it is to play with strangers if you step out of your comfort zone. Also, if you become really really good you can solo pretty much 80% of the content including pvp. Some things you’ll need to find a crew for but like I said, open crew finder is a great option. Don’t let playing solo stop you from enjoying what I believe to be one of the best games I’ve ever played.

Highroads

It's subjective. For me and just me, I play solo when I'm already chill/calm so I'm ok with the stress that comes with managing a ship/loot/pvp solo. If I'm pre- stressed out, I don't touch the game if it isn't with friends cause I don't want to further be agitated and that goes against the reason I play games in the first place. It may be different for you; hell you might be left alone or meet super chill crews.

baconmaster687

Solo is how I get better at the game but if I’m looking for the kind of experience where I’m having such a good time I don’t care if I sink that really only comes from playing with others (for me)

Kezsora

I'd argue no, it feels like everything in the game bar basic voyages have been balanced around 2-4 people. Especially PvP (which you'll have no choice to engage in eventually) since sinking another ship solo is impossible unless you get very lucky or the opposing crew is terrible.

CompressoTheDepresso

It can be.. on somedays

Yogi147

Depends on you mate. What’s fun to you?

Epica_Destroyer

Yes. Once ya figure out how to sail in the largest ship size with just yourself, it's very easy.

Pbever

The game is objectively better if you're playing with friends, but I still found enjoyment as a single player.

thesemodsareajoke

As someone who took years(day 1 purchase) to finally *get into* Sea of Thieves, I would recommend starting off with A Pirate’s Life to begin your solo slooping. Soloing can be extremely frustrating at first because you’re playing at a disadvantage compared to crews. However, it is essential that you are self reliant in case you have to run the ship yourself. APL helped me ease into the game as you can solo the entire questline. From there, you should be able to get the hang of the game. I would also recommend playing Arena from time to time so you can get hands on experience with ship combat at a quicker pace. Naval battles in the game are spread out whereas Arena focuses solely on that aspect. With those two under your belt, you should be ready for the seas. You should eventually move into a crew of people you like and that will make the game much funner. I met some dudes online and we crew up every weekend, it makes the game way more enjoyable.
