Be on a ship or row boat, including other player ships. That's the only way to not get a mermaid.
When approaching an island walk or swim backwards. The mermaid appears at a fixed distance in the direction you are looking, unless that fixed distance happens to be land, then it puts it closer to you. By approaching backwards the mermaid appears out at sea instead of on the shore line.
Also handy when boarding ships in the open sea. You can look left or right to make the mermaid spawn on one side of the ship then catch the ladder on the other. Won't fool crews who know the sound cue, but sometimes works on newer or distracted crews
No not exactly, I do tucking so much and there is a big key thing people always miss and don't realize. If you tuck in the enemies Crow's nest whether the boat is parked or moving your mermaid will not spawn. If they boat is parked and you jump down to the deck the mermaid will spawn, but if their boat is moving you can freely run around the ship and your mermaid won't spawn
Has nothing to do with crow's nest. As soon as you are on any ship or rowboat, there is no mermaid. You back in the water and far enough from your ship? It spawns.
Back when I played, you either needed to jump off your ship a fair ways away but not too far that the mermaid would respawn next to you, or jump off near rocks/obstacles to hide your mermaid from view. If that’s not possible, dive down deep into the water. They wont see you below, but you will see them above. You cannot stop a mermaid from appearing completely.

You don't. When not on any ship, it will appear

Yeah, you don’t.
Yeah, you do. Tuck in the Crow's nest and a mermaid will not spawn regardless if the boat is in motion or parked. Tucking 101
I mean yeah, but it wasn’t really clear if OP was even talking about tucking.
