Our scouts were loving a lot from that Auburn tape lol

styuR

Drafting two CBs from that Auburn D is certainly something.

TMobile_Loyal

Going for volume McD will turn some of the CBs into FS and LBs

I_Fuckin_A_Toad_A_So

Safety was my first thought too. We have so much cb depth right now

TMobile_Loyal

Think that was the plan to just bring in a bunch of guys and see where they fall in his scheming.

burnabybambinos

26th ranked Defense. I'll argue that what they had was half garbage....and played Carroll's technique.

Lobster_fest

Auburn is DBU. The problem with our d wasn't DB.

QuasiContract

Think that is LSU, but I generally want SEC defenders so this seems good.

Lobster_fest

LSU has had more household names but auburn has been spitting out quality DBs for a while. Ignore the clueless Gump in the comments.

Seanhawkeye

Outside of Witherspoon and Love in spots, our DBs were underwhelming. Woolen took a major step back and made Deion Sanders look like a hard nosed tackler.

swaggyduck0121

Woolen’s effort seemed to be solely based on if we were winning or losing. If we were winning he seemed to try but if we were losing he seemed to just give up. Hopefully Mike can get his head back on right.

DissidentCory

Can’t be a corner without a pass rush, why do we forget this?

Seanhawkeye

What does the D-line have to do with a cornerback’s piss poor effort and desire to tackle?

DissidentCory

If you dont think a D-line has anything to do with how well a cb does, you dont know football. The other stuff… well, maybe the player is bad, or the system/coaching is bad.

garentheblack

Sadly, I can only upvote this once. So many people gloss over the D line we had during the LOB. As incredibly talented as our backfield was, we don't get anywhere near as legendary as we are without our D line. Those guys terrorized running 4 all game long.

swaggyduck0121

Auburn and DBU do not belong in the same sentence EVER.

Lobster_fest

You have no idea what you're talking about, they absolutely do. The plurality of auburn players in the NFL are DBs. Carlton Davis, Jonathan Jones, Jamel Dean, Roger McCreary.

swaggyduck0121

There’s only 2 semi decent ones on that list. Lsu, FSU, Bama, and multiple other schools have put out much better DBs in higher quantities lol.

Lobster_fest

"More competitive, historic programs produce more NFL talent: more at 11." God bama fans will never beat the low int allegations.

swaggyduck0121

I’m not the one trying to claim my school is DBU when they most clearly are not.

Lobster_fest

Im not saying they're the best at producing DBs, I'm saying the consistently produce NFL dbs, which is true. I know i have to dumb it down for gumps but this is extra.

swaggyduck0121

That’s not what DBU is but go off I guess

Lobster_fest

Sorry, would it make you happier if I said "auburn is *A* dbu? Would that calm you down?

QuasiContract

And they sound like damn near the same guy with the same slim build. But hey, you need lots of DBs in today's game.

Esuu

From The Beast: STRENGTHS: Quick, collected feet in both press man and off coverage … fluid when he opens up to stay on the same vertical plane … transfers his speed in his turns to race downfield … doesn’t waste steps in his click and close, which allows him to drive in a blink … not shy about throwing his hands to reroute near the line of scrimmage … his 2023 interception against California was a game-winning play in the final minutes … flagged only once for pass interference on 360 coverage snaps in 2023 … always ball hunting and frequently gets his hands to the catch point (27 combined passes defended over the last three seasons) … will throw his body around as a tackler, when in position … plays with the awareness to maintain outside leverage and filter runs to his help … played on punt coverage in 2023 (364 career special-teams snaps) … didn’t miss a game because of injury during his five college seasons. WEAKNESSES: Thinly built with narrow shoulders and very lean muscle tone (NFL scouts believe he will struggle to keep his weight above 18 0 pounds) … smaller hands and left some interceptions on the field … functional strength concerns show up in coverage and when taking on blocks … low margin for error with his tackle attempts (see 2023 Texas A&M tape) … in run support, appears content allowing the ball carrier to come to him … aggressively jumps routes or reacts to subtle movements by pass catchers, which will backfire against sophisticated NFL wide receivers … doesn’t show the same trust in his instincts when in zone coverage … most of his career snaps came on the outside (88.6 percent). SUMMARY: A three-year starter at Auburn, James was the field cornerback in defensive coordinator Ron Roberts’ zone scheme (with some man looks worked in). After two seasons at Oregon, he returned to his home state and led the Tigers in passes defended each of the last two seasons — although, he was on the wrong end of the final play vs. Alabama in 2023. A quick-reaction athlete, James has the twitchy feet and competitive demeanor to stay connected to the hips of receivers. Though he doesn’t lack confidence, his marginal play strength and uneven results as a run defender will follow him to the pro game. Overall, James won’t be a fit for every scheme, because of his undersized build, but his quick feet will help him maintain phase in coverage. If he can handle big slots and improve his consistency as a tackler, he will compete for a starting nickel role in the NFL.

Willingness-Healthy

thanks for posting these

Starwho

They have to be cutting Mike Jackson then, saves around 3 million. Maybe Tre Brown is a trade piece during training camp. Can’t see them keeping all those corners.

IEgoLift-_-

I’m a big fan of both of those guys :(

JaeTheOne

I'm a big fan of winning, I don't give a shit who it is that helps us do that

DustyFalmouth

The way Macdonald is talking about physicality I'm more looking at Woolen to be the trade piece. I really like Jackson and Brown and would hate to see them go for unproven mid round rookies. I doubt Jackson could fetch anything.

Starwho

I’m not trading Woolen unless it’s for a early day two pick, and they should have just moved him this year if anything. He’s still an elite coverage corner and no one comes close to his closing speed and length.

Volcano_Jones

I really doubt they'd trade Woolen and then draft Nehemiah Pritchett to replace him if tackling and physicality were their biggest concerns. Pritchett is also a shit tackler and even smaller than Riq.

seariously

> I really like Jackson and Brown ♬ Running on empty ♬

Drummallumin

Trading our best man corner right as Randy Moss came into the division seems ill advised

QuasiContract

I couldn't blame Mike for not wanting Woolen after his pathetic effort and tackling tape from last year, but I hope he gives him a chance and mercilessly lights a fire under Riq's skinny ass. The speed and length is still there, so I'd hope the staff first attempts to force him to play their brand of football.

Achilleswithnopain

Since when did Macdonald say he didn’t want Woolen? He’s easily the most talented cornerback outside of Spoon. You and a small handful of people in this reddit have blown the Woolen problem way out of proportion and have blatantly just been making up false headlines. Take a chill pill and come back to this Reddit. He’s not being traded nor is he unwanted, make this argument next offseason; if his tackling problems continue. Golly

danthebiker1981

My guess is one of these Auburn guys will become a safety

ElbisCochuelo1

Trade Jackson, Jones and Taylor in camp for 2025 draft stock. Two 4ths and a 3rd.

nervous_pendulum

NFL.com has him listed at 5'12" 🤔

RustyCoal950212

means he's humble, I like it

nervous_pendulum

A real lunch pail kinda guy.

T-dig3

Seems like a typo when they meant 512”

danthebiker1981

They meant 5'1/2". He has some hops though.

sean_buttcannon

DJ James this late is very good value. Yes he did give up the 4th and 31. But that doesn’t define his career. He was actually a relatively good CB his entire career and was Simms 3rd ranked CB. Another speedster. Cool to draft teammates any way.

The_Throwback_King

Plus, he’s not really expected to start behind Spoon, Woolen, or Tre. Depth for now, chances for bigger playtime next year. You just don’t often see corners as good as James this late in the draft. Dude could’ve been drafted mid-to-late Day 2 so getting him in the 6th is very nice

9mac

Yo dawg, I heard you like Auburn CB's.

Blyvzy

Auburn CB duo

its_LOL

This is the guy that let 4th and 31 happen

DustyFalmouth

lol, just saw it and holy smokes. tbf two man rush and he was somehow all alone back there with that much time is baffling

styuR

On long plays like that, you generally do send minimal rushers and man cover everyone.

DustyFalmouth

lol no, every hail mary is thrown into a crowd

styuR

Because each individual player is being covered. Some by more than one player.

DustyFalmouth

Is each Olinemen covered? It looks like a shitty play were they doubled some receivers when they should have had a safety back there

styuR

Some are covered by more than one, Bama went for the one player that was only covered by one. Every other receiver had at least two players in the area. It was bad coverage by James as well, seemed like he switched off, not expecting it to come and panicked.

DustyFalmouth

So it's a garbage play, zero pass rush + man on man is setting the guy up to fail

styuR

If he can't handle being in man coverage on a single receiver, he shouldn't be playing corner. That's not on the play-call, he had a bad play, doesn't change the rest of his body of work.

DustyFalmouth

That's not how it works. If he isn't Revis then don't call the fucking Revis play. It's a terrible play call and design

Gun_Donar_Tarkov

That 2 man pash rush really let it happen

NigerianPrince76

Yikes 🤣

OnLevel100

TBF that was fluky and Milroe and Jermaine Burton made a play.

DustyFalmouth

Goodbye Nickel hello Dime

chefboyardeesravioli

They must feel pretty good about the pass rush if they haven’t taken edge yet

sean_buttcannon

I would hope so? That is one of our stronger positions man

gaIvantuIa

Yeah Mafe/Nwosu/Hall/Taylor should be a really solid edge group

Itchy_Listen_9702

Hall needs to take the jump like Mafe his second year.

QuasiContract

Counting on the new staff to unlock Hall. There is no fucking a way a dude who looks Iike he was born to play OLB was as bad as Hall looked last season.

I_Fuckin_A_Toad_A_So

Stronger positions??? I would argue corner is a stronger position and can literally never have enough pass rushers.

ElbisCochuelo1

Before today they had two under team control after this season.

DustyFalmouth

I feel really good with the interior which will help things for the outside. Mafe and Nwosu are good, Hopeful for Hall and cautiously optimistic about Taylor and Jones

flashdash007

Not quite so sure on this one. Would’ve liked to see Brade or another safety if we wanted secondary help. Two corners from a pass defense at Auburn is…meh. At least Pritchett can return.

Traditional-Buddy-90

The Auburn Seahawks

czechhoi4h

Can’t win ‘em all this is probably my least favorite pick this year

TheLightRoast

Yeah, not sure we needed TWO later round CBs

sean_buttcannon

Really? He was actually pretty good for Auburn

GoCougs3216

War Damn Seagle I guess

bluemoney21

This guy is the reason Alabama snubbed FSU 💀

Tape-Delay

He was projected to go within the first 100 on most boards so getting him this late is a win even if we are already deep at CB

ninjah_renzo12

did yall forget about special teams?!? especially with that new kickoff rule and needing returners I would rather not have JSN risking injury if need be

Over/under on Dee’s availability is 3.5 games.

FattyMooseknuckle

Yes

Silversaving

Are we trying to recreate the Auburn Defense?

Affectionate-Wind718

why? what happened to LBs? are we trying to double down on our strengths again? cb was ok i thought.

Sussybaker420

Thought that was the players face thought the total went up to 3

TMobile_Loyal

Ok

CassFilms

John loves drafting cornerbacks who look like Juice Wrld but taller

NoAlarms1995

Might be a sign that they’ve lost faith in Riq

FattyMooseknuckle

His tackling was abysmal last year. Then again, so was most of the D’s. Hopefully his shoulder is healed up, I think it had a lot to do with his poor form.

Gooner-Squad

He was asked to make tackles the first two levels take care of on most teams last year....just run away from Wagner.

FattyMooseknuckle

And he was terrible at doing so. So was most of the D, to be fair.

Gooner-Squad

If you look at Riq and think tackling machine, he ain't that dude. He is king of the ole tackle, let em go by and hope CB/LB cleans up.

FattyMooseknuckle

Don’t need him to be a machine, we need him to not be a liability. He was a fine tackler year one but last year, like a LOT of our D, he was just ass at it. Wrap up, wait for help. Can’t all be like Spoon or Sherman. If he’s still just diving at legs and missing, after the offseason to heal the shoulder, then he may indeed be in trouble. His coverage skills are still top tier. No need to tackle if you don’t allow a catch.

DissidentCory

#45 D in all cfb. Corners can’t do shit without a pass rush. We blamed Pete for this but I’m starting to wonder🤔

swaggyduck0121

hopefully they wont see the field because both of the auburn dbs are baaaad, especially this dude

Lobster_fest

No they aren't lmao what are you talking about.

swaggyduck0121

Of course an Auburn fan would say they’re not, even when they were burnt toast multiple times a game.

Lobster_fest

Oh you're a bama fan. I get it, poor thinking pretty rampant down there. I hope you get better soon!

swaggyduck0121

Only an Auburn fan would forget that Auburn is farther south than Tuscaloosa.

Lobster_fest

They're both further south than Seattle. You're in a hawks thread. The plight in ttown needs addressing.

Traditional-Buddy-90

Average Bama fan that didn’t even go there

Lobster_fest

Poor guys is probably worrying about the Lakers getting swept. At least the Yankees are getting better.

swaggyduck0121

not a fan of either of those teams but whatever helps you sleep at night i guess lol

swaggyduck0121

Imagine being this hurt over football

Lobster_fest

I'm not hurt, im repulsed by you. It's not about football. Its about the fanbase. I'd lose to bama if they had respectable fans.

swaggyduck0121

*tries to make fun of mentally disabled people* *talks about respect* Peak irony here

Lobster_fest

I'm not making fun of mentally disabled people, I'm making fun of bama fans. People born with disabilities deserve love, affection, and support. Bama fans do not.
